Star Trek's Combadge Is Finally Real, But It's Got Some Bugs

- To a Star Trek-obsessed kid growing up in the 90s, there was nothing cooler than the combadge, a communicator so small it fit into a Starfleet logo worn on the chest. I amassed quite a collection of combadge prop replicas over the years, but this isn’t just another hunk of chrome-plated potmetal: this is a communicator pin that actually works. (Well ... sometimes. And only with the help of your phone.) Join me for the MrMobile review of the Star Trek Bluetooth Combadge by Fametek!

kudos for getting in costume dude.
Oh hi Geordi
Beautiful pseudonym my man, BEAUTIFUL‼‼‼💯💯🖤
@@Renwoxing13 thanks 😉
Why would you only make yourself a lieutenant?
Trek fans: due to time constraints I had to pad out the section at 3:15 with random computer sounds from Trek. If you're showing up to debate whether the combadge ever made more than one sound on the show, though, please first rewatch:
TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint" (long comm chirp)
TNG: any later-season episode (short comm chirp [at least two variations])
TNG: "Brothers" (inoperative chirp made after Soong's modification)
DS9: "Past Tense, Part II" (combadge-off sound made after double-tap by O'Brien and Kira after beamdown)
GEN: [final Amargosa Observatory scene] different inoperative sound as a result of Soran's jamming
There was also at least once instance of the intraship incoming-page sound coming from a combadge on an away mission on TNG, and of a Bajoran combadge sound coming from a Starfleet combadge on DS9. I agree that these may have been mistakes on the part of the SFX team, but they happened on screen and IMO therefore fair game.
Point is, FameTek could have used more sounds and still been very much in-bounds in terms of canon.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] make it so number one....
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] Fair enough, but the commbadge was only ever meant to make three sounds: a successful connection, an unsuccessful connection, and the power sound. But those slight variations the shows used at different times, probably as experiments, would totally work for the purposes of this badge for audible feedback, I totally agree.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] I have a question to ask you. Is the badge better or the communicator better which one I want one but I don't know, tell me your opinion
Where did you get your uniforms done? My god! They're amazing! So often you see cosplay star trek uniforms that are bulky, droopy, and have oversized pips. Please tell me! Please! haha
Hey, I know I'm watching this way way after it was uploaded, but where did you get the star trek uniforms from? I'd love to get the captain's uniform of captain Picard😍
Perhaps the next generation will be better, Number One.
The Next Generation, huh? I see what you did there. :))
Yup I see that too
I don’t what did he do?
@@moeshickenyay This badge is from Star Trek.... The Next Generation....
Make it so.
The Star Trek "look" is absolutely excellent. That uniform coupled with the Riker haircut and beard? Well done. You could have been on the show!
"Part of me, still does love it, But he is dumb with money and My job is trying to help you spend yours wisely". This is what most reviewers don't say.
Talking to Cortana on a Starfleet comm badge makes this worth every penny.
Only made for one purpose: to get Trek fans to part with their money. Perfect Ferengis.
Lol true
Damn I wish this was good so hard.
Dom Esposito yo
Right?
Commander Riker, I hardly recognized you... :)
Personally I prefer the Voyager/DS9 combadge, but I guess they needed the whole oval for the tech inside. Now if they released a Mobile Emitter fitness tracker I'd be all in. :P
Ha! That's not a bad idea.
They could have fixed a few issues by dividing the functionality BETWEEN the "magnetic backing' and the front/visible part. Make the backing have a larger footprint, have most of the circuitry, and a wireless power and data connection to just a speaker/mic and capacitive touch sensor in the visible part.
Ah yes, the mobile emitter. I hope you have access to time travel. 29th century tech doesn't come easy...😔😔
Takes Cosplay so seriously he dresses as a Lt. Because he know he hasn't earned those 2 extra pips... lol
I always cosplayed as a Lt. Commander, two and a half pips.
I always cosplayed as a Lt. Commander, two and a half pips.
@@AhsokaTanoTheWhite I always cosplayed as Charlie Sheen, two and a half men.
With that beard I thought he should have gone full Riker.
Lieutenant... he didn't wanna push his luck...
I assumed the uniform shot was just a Photoshop for the UA-cam thumbnail, your geek cred jumped dramatically when I saw it in the actual video. You look just like a crewmember on the show, awesome! Keep up the great geeky, retro and current reviews - really something different on the 'tube.
"only works sometimes".... so it's just like the actual ones in the show... right.
well damn they had to communicate with the enterprise from thousands of miles away, this one seems to only need to be a few feet from your phone.
You're thinking of holodeck safety protocols.
"100 years earlier in future history." Talk about mind blown!
The com badge keeps your enemy from stealing your communicator.
The movie version was an officers bar for the red. Jacket
It was just.a pin on. Kirk's crew used either a wrist style or flip style communlcator. 23rd 'century
That made me chuckle too, after a moment of confusion anyway haha
I remember when I was young and thought this would never happen, now I yell at alexa from across the room over music and get mad when she doesn't understand exactly what I was asking for. Amazing how fast we can get jaded.
Dang, it's $80. If this was
The guy in the Star Fleet uniform looks like a younger version of Jonathan Frakes (Number one).
However, the early TNG Riker didn't have the face fungus.
@@Dragonblaster1
Maybe its Thomas 😋
Either case, earlier Riker also had fuller slickback hair like the ADA Cutter from Law and Order.

i wonder if they improved on this thing over the years or is it just a novelty
This DOES need an update. It has been 3.5 years... @MrMobile [Michael Fisher] ?
2:13 I like this part!
WE'RE SURE YOU DO
DetroitBORG I see what you did there
I love all the Star Trek gadgets and gizmos that can be found in the fore and background of your videos.
That's very cool. I always assumed with the position on the chest that Comm badges would be completely impractical. I'm pleasantly surprised to hear it actually works okay.
i love michael fisher!! ive never been in the star treks fandom but this was still sooo enjoyable to watch!
The commbadge only ever made the one chirp noise. The one exception is when the user was modifying it in some way in which case it make a shorter chirping noise.
Those other sound effects were intraship intercom chimes.
Copied from my response to a similar comment downthread:
I did use some computer sounds to pad that segment out for this video, but the combadge had at least four different sounds during TNG's run: the longer chirp of the earlier seasons, the shortened chirp that came into use later on, the incoming-hail sound (normally used aboard ship but sometimes played through the badge on away missions) and the "can't establish connection" buzz used when they were being jammed (TNG: "Brothers" is a good example of this, as well as an awesome opportunity to look inside a combadge). Later, DS9 and Voyager would add even more combadge sounds to the library.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] Ah, the inoperative sound, yes. I forgot about that one. I don't recall the incoming intercom-like noise on away missions but I suspect that would've been a mistake on the show's part.
i can't believe i watched this thinking it's brand new then i realized it was an old recommended video i kept wondering why did you suddenly stop saying in spirit
Thank you. Decided to get this after your detailed review. I love that you have as much fun geeking about fan toys like this too.
I was a 60s-70s kid. We dreamed of the TOS communicator, tricorder and phaser. We were poor. When I say poor, we didn't get a refrigerator until 1967. We had coal and wood stove and furnace. So Star trek was a whole other world of possiblity. I lived in a poor neighborhood in an old warehouse district. Us kids would dream up Star trek adventures and play in the alleys. Of course gadgets like communicators were fantasy back then. However, we had imagination. We would use those old black staplers as communicators. They could flip open like one. They also doubled as a phaser. We never did find anything small enough for a tricorder. Or, at least I don't remember that being improvised. Hard times, but good times. I'd trade those days over the bullshit in the world today.
i want one so badly. this is what i have been wanting (kinda) since i first saw them on stng.
I love how you're a star trek fan it just triple's why I watch you. You can do a video of reviewing a rock and I would be interested in hearing what you had to say. Hands down the best reviewer on any platform.
Damn... thought that was William Riker for a second in the thumbnail. Ha ha.....
Why am I being recommended this only now in 2020
Same here
I loved the video. You keep improving even more!
Keep up the good job!
This guy can review everything!
Thanks for this review. I almost bought this on the spot I was so excited. Best way to look at it is, it is a step in the right direction. I don't know about anyone else, but I could care less what other people think. This is far better tech than holding a tablet to the side of your face :S
Thanks for the good review! I was going to get one but now I will wait and see if they get better later first.
UNICRON 9 In a couple of years max this'll work like a charm!!
Thank you for the honest review! Hopefully they do improve on this I’d definitely buy one if they fixed the issues!
“Got some bugs”. Well, it can be a bug (as in an eavesdropping device) if it doesn’t switch off and a person’s conversation can be heard by others...
Got some bugs.... Interesting that you include on screen a shot of something that could stand in as a Replicator from Stargate, those things were insidious.
New sub! I loved your review and the blooper at the end. LOL
...commander riker. lol. should have put that as your name
Thats not the correct rank, you savage. Look at his pins.
+FyX, I mean, his beard isn't quite the same... Maybe he had a beard when he was a Lt., and after being promoted to Lt. Cmdr. or Cmdr. he decided to shave it, but then grew it back before Season 2...
FyX the pips are wrong but a red uniform means commander rank.
Eddieallen Red doesn't mean any Rank it means they are in the command division for lack of a better word. The Next Gen was command, cranberry, operations mustard yellow, sciences greenish blue, and medical was turquoise blue. The original series was command gold operations red and med/sciences blue.
squach623 !!!!! I think officer would be a more appropriate term
oh man. this is crazy. my dad would love this, hopefully they make more stable versions soon
awesome collection bro. I always wanted the movie version. it's always the most expensive one . definitely picking this up. thanks for the review buddy
I have one and you’re spot on about the issues. It’s a cosplay device for when I’m at ComiCon or FanX.
This is so nerdy I love it.
loved this review!! was debating getting this as I already have and love the Bluetooth communicator. Thanks.
last thing...where did you get your tricorder? Yours looks different from the link. Thanks
Great video! and Kudos for wearing it out and about! have they ever updated this badge I was wondering?
A great review, and I love your upgrade suggestions

To answer a few questions we see here.. The TNG 30th Anniversary is the newer version. This review was done on the original Star Trek 50th Anniversary version (first run production) and the 30th Version of the Bluetooth ComBadge has been improved to correct the excessive chirping issues seen here and is further improved on a few other features like stronger magnet, louder speaker and microphone sensitivity.
My box is different. It doesn't have two combadges on it. I see now. You've got it standing in front of the box. Great video. You helped me make up my mind and I got one. Bugs or not, It's still the freaking' communicator. How cool is that?
I'm literally watching ST: Voyager right now. Thanks @MrMobile.
I hate learning that this comm badge didn’t work well but your uniforms look incredible!
Thanks for providing us fans with such a valuable review! I recently purchased one of The Wand Company's TOS Bluetooth Communicators, and it is amazing :D Have had so much fun both playing and *using* it for real these last few days, it has made me feel like a kid all over again. It's just a shame the company that has made this offering has failed to produce a workable product - it may be worth getting in touch with The Wand Company to see if they'll be offering a similar (but working) item?
I sure wish they would! But I'd rather they make a working Tricorder first. :)
You have the mannerisms and expressions perfect.
I've got the NG magnetized speaker prop badge where you tap it and it repeats three standard phrases
One of my favourite childhood toys
If they perfect the Bluetooth one I'll be using it
I pre ordered mine and it should be here on the 21st.. I'll probably keep it because I'm a fan and part of a local Star Trek club. If I saw this review before, I might have not bought it... In the end I'm sure I'll have fun wearing this around the office and at cons.
Got the bluetooth communicator, great show accurate metal details, problem is its twice as thick as my phone and just as big. So not so practical as a bluetooth connection. Great video, Thanks.
Good job dude. Lookin sharp ;)
got to get myself one of these, looks really cool!! btw, you kind of look like Riker when you wear the uniform.
Mr. Mobile......thank you for the review on the Bluetooth communicator badge....you were spot on with the issues.....my favorite communicator badge sound was the one from star trek the next generation the early years....best sound in my opinion.....i purchased both the communicator badge and the the star trek original series communicator.....despite the issues I have waited years for these to come out and I will put up with it if only to have a communicator badge that emits a sound we are all too familiar with.....i have watched and enjoyed all the star trek series except enterprise and as long as these devices are available i am surely going to buy.....bugs or not.....i purchased my communicators from geek.com two years ago so the bugs I have are from the first issue.....i will gladly keep watch for updated communicator badges that will work better.....again thanks for the review and I have subscribed to your channel for future reviews.
NIce Uniform. I am a TOS guy from the 60s. My flip phone ST communicator never worked well either.
OMG man. Great review. The plastic look says it all. I want to get it just to play with it for an hour.
I have the tos communicator. It works great for me. Wish they had a com badge that would do the same thing
Delightful to exist , hope another one can be done to improve it. Capacitive touch, variations on chirps and wireless charging would be ideal.
Liked and subscribed!
I can't stop smiling!
Excellent Review,hands down...
I picked one up before I found this video; I definitely forgot I was wearing it the first day and went to Best Buy and Lowe's and got more than a few second glances. One of the Best Buy employees even called it out, asking if it was bluetooth- which was exactly when I remembered I even had it on.
This will get me to subscribe. Coolness dude.
You are my hero for doing this review!!
I have been working on a project the past 2 years to create a universal translator (in a combadge) - I am making more progress now thanks to neural networks. Watch this space, may have something to release soon
Right on! That's so cool.
Is it only me who likes the Voyager uniforms the most? So minimalistic and clean, plus the whole black, perhaps most beautiful uniform there could ever be. If only there was a clear blue.
Dam you look like a young riker in that suit. Very professional.
uniform looks great on you!
That tricorder looks awesome! Wish I had one like that.
Great review!
I built a functioning combadge out of a moto360 via a combadge app that I built so it also takes biometric readings and you can change badge insignia via a swipe...but Google blocked me from uploading and CBS, paramount, and Loeb and Loeb wouldn't back me up.
maybe when they fix some of the issues, and to differentiate models, we could get a voyager style combadge.
For a while I was trying to wire up a shirt so the activation was on the badge, the microphone was on the officer pips, and the speakers hidden on both shoulders.
But budget and free time killed that project. Still sounds like it would work better than this thing.
You look like a young will rider. Great review!
I had one that worked when I was a little kid. It was the size of a mason jar lid and all it did was beep. But it worked!
I have the TOS Communicator. It works pretty good.
Oh, you're so stolid! You weren't like that before the beard.
Goddamn it Michael .... you could play Riker in a re-boot of The Next Generation!!!
I hope this works and works good. I ordered mine back in Sept and it's on the way but will not be here till Dec 23, so much for UPS 3 day delivery.
for us trek fans u should do a video about what trek stuff u have and if its good and where to get it, id watch and like :)
I don't recall but one sound coming from the combadge, those other sounds were ship computer sounds. I think this is a great first step, it can only improve. If it does, I don't care how nerdy, I'm getting one.
seriously if they every work out the bugs or make the the speaker and Bluetooth better, please make another video so I can get it, this is a dream even though not the biggest star trek fan
First time watcher, liked it. Also your very handsome.
A high resistor MOSFET transistor amplifier can make a pretty good switch which does not even be touched. It reacts upon small electrostatic changes close to its "base" antenna. Alternatively you could use a reed switch and have a tiny neodymium magnet glued to your finger. Or you could even use a light bridge. 3 ideas to remove your mechanic touch switch 😊
I must say you look totally like Riker with that uniform ! 😃
Love the 'working' combadge. Perhaps when they've fixed the bugs, added voice dialling and brought the price down. Meanwhile I'm off to check out the TOS communicator. At 69 I need all the help I can get to look even vaguely cool!
No coincidence you have a "Riker" look happening, dude!! Lol. Yeah, love it, but like all tech wait a bit for the bugs to be worked out.
You know you can possibly customize the sound by dedicating a sound to each distinctive feature it executes.
I would have expected a much improved version to have come out by now. But from quick glance it doesn't seem so, gladly. I'll have a proper search around another time.
nice review, like always ;)
but will you review the tic watch 2. I am very interested how it holds up against the competition, especially if it is starts at 199$
Thanks for the upload great video
Mike you look like Commander Riker in that suit!
The Apple Watch walkie-talkie work just like a Star Trek communicator. I love living in the future!
Next generation version are going to get so good. I want one
Wow...that looks like an authentic TNG uniform. Way to play up the review. Nice work.
Damn.... I wish this was good. I would totally get one.
great star wars video
You are the worst.
MrMobile [Michael Fisher] you sound just like my mother
