      I held on to a Kitchen Aid standing mixer because it cost a lot of money and could do a lot of things but I never used it and it took up a huge amount of space in my kitchen. Now that it's gone, I don't even miss it. I just wish I had not spent $185 on it in the first place. No more impulsive kitchen appliances purchases for me!

      Great to hear that Robin! Ditching most of my closet has been amazing. Makes traveling with just a backpack much easier too if you do any traveling.

      This just re-affirmed my decision to not get a mixer! My wife has wanted one for quite a while (we both love cooking and baking) but I know we will not end up using it long term with the extra effort for setup and cleaning with it. At least now you know and it’s something you don’t have to worry or think about anymore. :)

      @@joshfenn Great reminders and tips. I have incorporated a process to eliminate excess accumulation of clothing. If I buy a pair of shoes, I donate a pair of shoes. I follow the same principle for any particle of clothing (one in, one out). Easy to follow as well. I do also love public transit (I live in Denver) and I use it as much as possible. Using physical movement and your own body weight to stay active and healthy is terrific. I also subscribe to a QiGong practitioner online (minimal fee of $15 a month) that enables me to practice whenever and wherever I wish. If find this to be a better arrangement than gym memberships. Thank you again for your post. Hello to everyone from Denver! RJ

      I ditched tv about last year February and also telephone landline.
      Also only shop for foodstuff for about 3 days ahead.
      And first go through cupboards before buying cleaners and toiletries. Use what you have first. We all ( i think by nature) have a hoarding instinct. To put away for a 'rainy day'. I can't say i've managed 100%, but it's a work in progress.

    I paid off my car 18 years ago. I do need a car however, once paid off and just keeping it up costs less and less every year. My life style is now plant based. I am healthier, thinner and drug free with no major health problems at the age of 84. I worked longer than I needed to and kept up with the times and had extra money to save. I love volunteering and do what I can to help others by passing information on regarding food, budgeting, fun making friends enjoy being together for an evening or week end just eating, walking, new ideas to stay active as we grow old. I keep my mind active reading about different things, listening to Ted Talks and great lectures on UA-cam. Life is never dull. Just an old lady doing very well.

    I found your "philosophy" refreshing. I've been poor almost all the second half of my life (I'm 53). It use to be the opposite for major of people, but it's my life. I'm lucky the country where I live a simple worker on minimum wage can have an excellent public health system so I don't worry about being poor and get sick. I just try to be happy with things I have. I always avoid getting in debts, I only buy things if I have the money.
    I was raised in a middle class family, my father worked a lot and we have a easy life. He lost major of his wealth 10 years before die (two terrible investments),
    I have more free time than my father had and I think I'm happier than he was. I just accepted poverty as a valid way of life. I eat very well, I just change my clothes if it's really necessary. I don't have a car. I enjoy traveling and it's very easy to do that with few money . I think I'm happy because I only have like minded friends, I never have to impress them and its very comfortable when you don't have money to pay a restaurant and they accept to come to my house and to eat my cheap and tasty recipes.
    I never try to impress people, I know some co-workers see me like a loser, but I really don't care, they have huge debts and they're always talking about they'd love to earn more money. I'm just out of that.

LOL Luxury NEVER interested me like a good hike or fixing a good meal. To me those are things that GIVE MORE than some gold necklace or some other deal that is senseless and worthless!? People think I'm crazy and weird because I am poor and live on less than a $1 a day, then they're complaining about how they CAN'T balance their check book or are wondering which credit card to use for the week as they're AL maxed out, and they think 'I'm crazy'? Hmmm? If you came to my home (if I had a home), I would make you a nice dinner and we could talk outside looking at clouds Gustavo, you would NOT leave my table 'hungry'!!^_^

    The phone case one was really odd. There are so many inexpensive and durable cases (see ebay). Who pays $40+ for a phone case? Not me. I have paid $15 tops from one of those cell phone kiosks at the mall. Breaking or scratching a phone is extremely common -- so many possibilities to break it even if you are very careful. Having a case just seems like a no-brainer to me, especially as I'm someone who has never had a brand new, out of the box smart phone. The phones I have had I have bought second hand off ebay, slightly damaged (some superficial scratching or cracks present) - so no insurance. That's allowed me to get an android phone that otherwise would have cost me a few hundred dollars for about $50. Since my phone didn't come to me pristine, I am conscious about having a protective case so that the damage already there doesn't somehow increase.

    • @joshfenn
      @joshfenn  5 років тому +2

      Cases are definitely a viable option for some people in certain situations. Like I mentioned in the video, some cases are cheaper and some repairs are more expensive. Glad it’s been working well for you 👍👍

    • @IakonaWayne
      @IakonaWayne 4 роки тому

      Agreed, cases will help your phone last longer and maintain their appeal, I've had my note 8 for more than 2 years. I guess if limiting your smartphone use is apart of your minimalist approach though that could greatly reduced your odds of dropping your phone so I can see it from that perspective .

      I tried going without a case for a few weeks once, because I just like the look without it much better. Unfortunately, I'm also quite clumsy. Made it to about 3 weeks before I cracked the screen by dropping the phone and have used a case again ever since. Also, if I remember correctly, my current case cost me 5,90€. I've been using it for almost 2 years now.

    I always enjoy listening to people on youtube talk about their experience of owning less, while I sort through all my things. It usually takes me 6 hours now to sort through my house things, that's food pantry to cloths to camp gear to bins of seeds. My career forces me to own more infrastructure, and I generally keep excess clothing tightly stored as I burn through clothing articles really fast, and it's nice to have the next in line at the ready when i find a sweet 2ndhand score. But I need my phone case, otherwise it wouldnt survive. I'm a minimalist to the degree of process orientation, I only own that is required to maximize my life, and the possessions and space are merely maximized to prevent hindrance or overall attention requirements. I do enjoy sorting through and pulling weight from the mass, generally in the form of tax/papers and excess containers, thanks for your encouraging words.

    re: souvenirs. Pick up a pebble, or a fallen leaf, etc. When you get home put it on the window sill near the kitchen sink, somewhere you'll see it all the time. Same effect as a store-bought souvenir only you'll remember how you felt, where you were, and what you were doing when you picked it up.
    What disturbs me is how people nowadays live through their devices, rather than, as Josh points out, in the moment, enjoying that meal rather than making food porn that they may never look at again. I once told a friend that if they really wanted to remember the meal, they take a picture of the empty, dirty plate, then try to reconstruct that moment in time. My suggestion got a nervous chuckle...

    I would say a general rule to follow is to always buy something based on its job in your life. As someone who does outside sales (beer) I need a personal vehicle and a phone case. But I realized I don’t need the best or most expensive of either of those. Because my work requires me to use them constantly and be hard on them, I should buy reliable, but affordable options.
    I downgraded to an iPhone SE w/ an otter box. Not having iMessage or a way to use my sales app on a personal phone were hindrances but I didn’t need any other functionality. I just recently payed off my car and am in the process of saving cash to buy a used 4runner - I realized 4wd, space, and reliability were the 3 things my Fiesta ST were missing - as I crashed it, overloaded with beer samples, into a guard rail in the snow 😅

    Phone case is something I will not give up. It's not a de clutter item. When I got my Samsung s7, after the first 2 weeks of owning I dropped it from a low height but all the phones now are edge to edge and the glass isn't hidden in a bevel. I had to live with that crack until I was gifted a pixel 3 for 2-3 years. The replacement cost for the glass alone was high. So I'm never making hat mistake again.

    A few months ago I put all of my old clothes from when I was young into trash bags to donate. I got rid of so much that at this point my closet is empty, and all of the clothes I have are in my dresser. I use every item at least twice a month, (save seasonal clothing like jackets, which I don't wear in the summer months). I have worn the short sleeve shirts I am left with every week in the summer moths, and now that it is getting cooler where I live, I am wearing my long sleeve shirts every week.

    My travel souvenirs are guide books from art galleries or museums I have visited. I enjoy reading them later for a deeper experience of what I saw. I have never owned a car -- just live near a bus stop and supermarket and get a bike, save a fortune. I have a case for my tablet when I travel -- it is a denim bag I made out of an old pair of jeans. It's really a question of attitude. I know that the more I buy the more I will have to store or take care of. That makes me think twice about purchases, especially clothing.

    • @joshfenn

    The idea of no phone case is nice, but depending on your job, or if you have children, a protective case is necessary. As for souvenirs, I try to get something useful from local artisans. I’m especially drawn to pottery, most of our dishes are hand thrown pottery pieces I have collected over the years. I’m with you on the gym memberships. Most people can get exercise around the house, or hiking/biking. For some, though, with specific health issues, a gym with specialized equipment, or warm water pool is necessary. Since I work remotely at a job that requires mostly sitting in front of a computer, I pace around my house when speaking to customers on the phone or during breaks. I can accumulate 10k+ steps without leaving the house. I appreciate the way you present your ideas as *ideas* and not the “this is what you must do because I do it” Definitely helps others to mindfully consider ways they can cut back without feeling preached at or guilty if they can’t do all of it.

    • @joshfenn
      @joshfenn  4 роки тому

    We have made storage into art. (The kind of art nobody likes...but art just the same). Old bicycles were put high on a shelf with neat lighting. Camping lanterns instead of pictures on the walls. After doing this for a bit some items were given away, while others were dusted off and enjoyed. (The given away part was good fun)

    I wear plan shirts, and shorts.xD only have a few different colors.. black, gray, really dark blue.. my shorts are red, black, and grey. I made that change years ago, my ocd was so bad when it came to clothing, cleaning, my hair, my items.. to help with it, I made that change, and I stopped stressing over it. I used to clean my room the the point of a nervous breakdown.. sitting on the floor crying, pulling my hair and screaming. Then I stopped doing it, then came the mess. I also have adhd.. I swear, I can only be one extreme or the other. Super clean with little to no stuff, or hoard everything. I went with super clean, and now it’s like I’m back to my childhood... (ocd to the max.) but I have less stuff now, and the stress is slowly fading, and I’m no longer overwhelmed by my items. I think wanting to become a minimalist has helped me in so many ways, and I am better because of it.

    I am 60 and work with much younger people so try to be on task with contemporary equipment and technology- you are as old as the stuff you know how to use. Bought a new Samsung phone yesterday. I replaced my 3 year old one with a new one which cost £90 less than it did last time and is 3x the memory. Then I sell the old one and all is good. I don't need a £900 phone when a £200 one will last me 5 years. I asked for a kindle for my birthday so I don't end up with a house load of books, which can really cost and clutter the place up but read them all on one piece of tech. I look for concessions. I decided to buy good quality trousers and shoes and jumpers, they last, or buy second hand, but only the good stuff. I knit my own socks. I eat really well but buy in bulk and use a slow cooker and make 4 meals in one go and freeze the rest. Ditched gym membership, I swim and walk instead and carry the groceries home in a backpack- that's weightlifting. I like your style and your videos, you seem like someone who would be a good friend. I am glad you didn't freeze to death after your recent experience. Mark from London UK
