Good points. There's nothing less minimalist than nosy people gatekeeping and critiquing someone else's version of minimalism.
I like nice things. I buy lots of things i don't really need, because i can afford it and the people in my life are well taken care of already. My predominant form of minimalism is limiting my interaction with people who are toxic or just draining to be around. It's life changing when you start saying "no" and don't feel the need to explain yourself.

Well said! It’s been so disappointing and discouraging to see such a positive thing like minimalism get torn down by judgmental and negative people. Comes with the territory with all things social media but I’ve largely stopped sharing a lot of my experience with minimalism because of it.

Josh, I just stumbled upon you various videos a few days ago. Thanks! I really like your message, and it’s given me a lot to think about.
I had a brother, six years older than I, who gave me some very valuable advice, which I think meshes with this message. He’s gone now, but during his life he never cared much about money, and mostly worked menial jobs. When I talked to him right after my first layoff, some 20 years ago, he told me, “it takes real character to not spend money”. It was his way to say that having a non-consumptive lifestyle was a good thing. What he then said that everything we read, or hear on radio or television, is all about trying to get us to spend money. He meant that it takes real character to ignore that message of “spend, spend, spend.” Ever since, I’ve tried to simplify, to minimalize. It’s carried me through more jobs and more layoffs.

I'm a minimalist mom of 2 and its made being a mum/keeping the house clean and tidy so much easier so we can spend more time doing days out and activities with the kids vs wait mum needs a few hrs or a day to clean .... it takes me 30 mins to get the house from a tornado to tidy

Love to hear this! Embracing minimalism has quite a few perks, but easy cleanup/maintenance is definitely one of my favorites.

Great video Josh. I've been practising minimalism for about 2 years now and have noticed huge improvements to my life. Love your notion of embracing people new to the movement, hate to see people saying who can and can't be part of it.

Thanks so much for the support! I know a lot of the hate/gatekeeping stuff is probably a small percentage of people but I know their voices can be loud for the newcomers. Glad to hear it’s been helping you as it has for me 👍👍

I’m a new Minimalist and also a Fashion Designer. At first it was hard because all my clothes I “needed” for work and to study but I’m learning that I’m more happy with only my basics in my wardrobe and the ones that I really use in a daily basis

I definitely get that! As someone who has a lot of gear/tool intensive hobbies and professional work, it’s important to constantly be evaluating needs vs wants when things might be more easily justified. Always a work in progress for me.

A very openminded approach to minimalism. You even touched on it, too many people see themselves as gatekeepers.

Yeah it has stopped me from wanting to talk more on the subject in the past, felt like I needed to say my peace though. Should be a positive and welcoming area for newbies!

I have been on the minimalist path for awhile, but yes it is just a strategy and tool in your life, it is not something that is static, or a title. Encouraging people to see what it is like to have less an appreciate so much more that matters, as well as it is a great Segway to understanding and being mindful of what you consume. If that’s the types of materials you purchase and what effects those have, and or where you buy and how much you buy, always keeping in mind that everyone is in a very different situation than yourself.

I need help! Im more interested in being satisfied with what I have. I’m an impulsive/stress-relief shopper. And the things I buy? I’m going to research the blender or can opener that’s computerized or has all the bells and whistles. It’s deeper than just starting to save or stop spending. I’ll be saying to myself “I need to stop spending right now” while I’m clicking “submit order”, ugh!

Its a tough situation, I definitely deal with this sort of thing at times too. I haven’t found any particularly good tricks or anything to avoid it, but consistently reminding myself helps. Reading things from stoicism and Taoism usually help me too 👍👍
