When it's things we don't typically buy, my husband and I will search the object on google to compare prices 🤣 sometimes standing in the aisle for 10 minutes just trying to figure out if it's worth it
Or you could live off your parents and invest all your money for your retirement, and ask your parents for money to raise your kids and invest all your income in stable stocks or real estate. As long as your parents are fine with it, obviously you spend time with them and help them do things when they ask you.
Regarding "on sale", DO try to buy something on sale, but only AFTER you've decided to buy the thing. Trying to WAIT until the thing goes on sale also gives you time to further consider the decision to buy at all.
Chris J I agree I save all year for Black Friday. I make my plans to purchase certain items that I need and when the date comes I get those items at significant discounts. Then because of the long wait many things on my list don’t make the cut so I don’t buy them. 👏🏾
that's great advice right there When it comes to sales, I only search for items I'd buy at that moment anyway For example, since I buy necessities such as toilet paper or yogurt, I'd buy a certain brand if it's on sale and the quality of is worth it Plenty of bargains are actually fake sales, when the discounted price is actually not that much lower (it's just been lowered from a higher tag for the sale effect) Just like Nate said, you're not saving $800, you're in fact spending $400 - since you wouldn't have spend that money anyway
But on the other hand, in the US at least, you can use your car to make money in your off time with contractors such as doordash, uber eats, etc. At my old job I would make ~$600 a week before taxes, but about 2-4 days a week I would go doordash (most popular in my region) for just a couple of hours. If you are familiar with your car in terms of maintenance, condition, and efficiency you can easily minimize excessive miles and gas economy. This easily boosted me over $300+ extra a week after expenses. If you learn how to maintain your car personally (common things at the least such as oil/filter changes, tire rotations, etc.) your miles will pay for themselves and you will definitely save on maintenance costs.

@@St4Jimmy hey man, could you give away some ways in which you saved/decreased expenses? I am studying in the netherlands as well and looking for things I could easily save money on as a student. Would love to know!
Story time: about 3 weeks ago, my wife and I decidedly to do something I swore I'd never do, which was buying a brand new car (actually, a dealer demo, so it was a good deal). Anyway, as we went over our budget to find out if we could afford it, we found out we were spending literally hundreds of euros a month on delivery and take out. To make it worst, it wasn't even fancy restaurants, but mostly "cheap" stuff. Since then we have been making almost every single meal at home, we have saved a lot of money and we actually eat better and healthier than before.
This is actually true. Used to buy stuff, fancy car, bla bla bla. Loks like I have money while i did have belly anything at my account. Now i do not buy anything, no car ppl thinks i have shit. Wrong, My account is stacking like crazy. And it feels good to have this financial backup. It is media who wants all your money while giving you stuff you dont really need,
Things you shouldn't buy: - Sale items you don't need - Coupons - A car - Drinks & Alcohol - Books - Too much food - Warranties - Souvenirs - Hotel rooms (use hostels) - Investing in things you don't understand

Your car idea is so true, I found that out by accident. I started saving super quick after I wrecked my car. Instead of immediately going out and buying another one I just walked to work for a while. Then once I realized how much money I was saving by not having a car (maintenance, impulse buying, fast food) I didn’t buy another one. In 1 year I was able to save $9,000 from a $15 an hour job. The year after that I was able to save $11,000 in total. Headed to $30k and still don’t have a car!😁
I seriously applaud you for being an emotionally intelligent young adult in this modern society. We need more guys like you. A treasure, your mindset i mean.
It also helps when you have no refrigerator but I know this does not apply to all people. As for me, having no ref means I won't buy food that won't last long and it saves on electricity as well.
Well, I just freeze stuff that I know otherwise would go bad. It's healthier than eating some processed monstrosity that you can keep on shelf for years.
I’ve never owned a car in my life and It’s been a big benefit. Rents always paid and I get to spend that money on things that I wanna do. Not worrying about insurance, gas, and repairs. Depends on where you live. Live close your job and live in the city.
Can confirm, having a car is the biggest money drainage in your savings, for a regular job of course. Just hope that your car will last you long enough so that you don’t need to spend all your savings for a new one
This is simply not an option for the many people who do not live in large cities with public transit systems. Where I’m from, in South Texas, not having a car will severely limit one’s job opportunities, as well as quality of life. Of course, one does not need to buy the most expensive vehicle and be tied to making $500+ payments per month for 5 or so years, it’s simply a way to get from point a to point b and we should always remember that.
I live in the country and need a car for work, any local town that has anything of worth is also a 20minute drive, public transport is 1. Fucking gross here. And 2 only run every 1 and a half hours, i also hated living in birmingham on weekends visiting relatives and taking public transport there.
I just started saving in January (one month ago) and I already have $300+ saved. You are helping me so much! Thanks 😊 my goal is to hit $10k+ by the end of the year.
Thank you for highlighting the car-free lifestyle option!! Very doable in an urban setting, living less than 5 blocks from public transportation, biking for local errands. Reduces pollution!!
Nate, you always downplay your expertise “I’m just a guy on the internet offering financial advice”. You are exceptionally bright. At 21, you figured out things that took me until my mid 30s to figure out! And yet I still cannot articulate the same points as well as you’ve done in this video.
yup, i mean what looks better: Dropping the price of $100 shoes to $80 and offering 20% sale or first raising the prices, quick and so that barely anyone notices to $120 and then put them them down to $80 and offer 33% sale. i don't blame them, the people are too damn naive and need to actually use their brains from time to time.
I like the idea of minimalism as well and I am pretty good with managing my own budget, but do you ever feel weird urges to buy things after a while of not spending much money?
The whole minimalism lifestyle really just helps u to think about what u really need that u keep and rest donate, sell , or toss out. so not spending helps to save cause u not buy any u not need. i sure he sees stuff he might want, but thinks before he gets so he not getting anything he does not need any.
I rented dark Phoenix on my cable box it was amazing now I find it hard not to buy it and add it to my complete x-men collection :( I will try my best to wait for it to go on sale wish me luck!
While there are people who "extreme coupon" and buy things they don't need and hoard stuff, that doesn't describe every coupon user. I started using coupons recently to buy only items that I really need, mostly groceries, and it's saved me a lot of money. I saved $20 dollars on my last grocery trip using coupons.
Larry Massa true to a point. But if I can get 4 shower gels for the price of 2 I’m gonna get it using coupons. Because I’ll for sure use those extra shower gels later on so I would be saving money.
When it comes to SALE, I already know what I need/want to buy. I just wait till SALE to get it. Never buy something without planning just because its on SALE.
I always thought I needed a car- I'm carless right now during the pandemic and I'm actually feeling good about it. I may not buy a car this year unless I have some passive income coming in to pay for the vehicle in full. Thanks, Nate! This is a helpful video.
As an older guy that admires Nate's drive, ambition, and early success, I urge everyone to remember that he's 21. Make sure that the life advice you receive comes from a diverse collection of people that you trust. keep up the good work Nate.

“If I had 10s of millions of dollars in the future I’d probably still stay in hostels” I want to meet you in ten years and ask you if you still do that haha
@Nate O'Brien A hostel instead of a yurt? No thank you! 😂 That happens to be one of my dream trips, & I plan on staying in a yurt, riding a Mongolian horse, & living it up with the locals in a cultural festival. 😌🙌💯 However, something tells me you’d probably find it funny to look back on this comment in 10 years. 😇
You are soooo beyond your years!! I’m almost 29 and have come to some of these realisations over the past few years (but I was an absolute ejit at 21) 😂 I completely agree with the hostels. I’ve been lucky to make it to 41 countries on 4 continents (many more than once) over the past 6 years and mostly stayed in hostels... This allowed me to meet people from all over the world, make friends and have an amazing time (and save a fortune)! I ended up visiting many of those people and meeting them in other countries. I had a goal to make it to 50 countries before I turn 30 but I don’t think I’ll make it now with Covid. I can’t wait to get back traveling. I only discovered you on UA-cam tonight (I’m from the midlands of Ireland) and I’ve watched several of your videos and they are absolutely brilliant! Thank you! I’m guessing your heritage is irish?? How many generations do your family go back? Great second name! 💪🏻
When i was a kid i used to live without any kind of worries or problems, my dad could make even 50k a year, but life started to giving hell to my family since around 2011-2012, my dad died, my mother lost her job, and my country is facing a big financial crisis. I started to work as soon as i got out from high-school, and currently im working with my uncle on repairing industrial refrigeration systems (but also private ones like for example fridges and air conditioners). This kind of videos makes me so happy. I really think that we don't need to spend the amount of money that we do. Since last year I have been trying to incorporate some minimalist habits into my life and personally, it has been the best that I could have done. I know that this is an old video but thank you for your content. It really inspires me✨
All I need is my guitars, two amps, manga comics, retro games with a crt and a computer and I'm all set. Just keeping the things you're passionate about. This video makes me think of my dad, he has 2 containers completely filled with all kinds of random junk that he just has to save for one reason or another. I never wanna be like that, I wanna be able to pick up most of my material belongings at a moments notice. It's a good idea to cut back on the quantity of things you own to a reasonable amount.
One of my favorite souvenir ideas that I came up with is a tray on a bookshelf with coins from every country I've been to. When travelling, I'll just keep in mind that I'd like to save a coin of each denomination (.01, .05, .25, 1.00 etc), and toss them into my dopp kit during the trip. Then at home, every once in a while, I'll see the tray and sort through it for a minute or two and see a coin from some country and memories from the trip will immediately start coming to mind. Good stuff. :-)
My problem is I'll save a chunk of money then think "oh I saved x amount of money, I can afford this now. I deserve it, right? I've been saving money so I deserve something I want now?" I think it's breaking the habit of buying something on impulse if you can afford it.
I am 100% with you. I am 3 times your age, and financially independent. Part of this is having a decent and steady job. Part is also throwing money out the way many people do. The only downside to this, maybe a delightful downside, is that the frugality habit is very hard to break. So I may leave a lot of money on the table when I die, which is kind of not the intention. You may not want to look back and realize you've denied yourself some pleasures of life in the name of frugality. That is something to consider when you occasionally splurge. I need to splurge a little bit more often. Also, had I held more equities than fixed income instruments when I was younger, I'd have a hell of a lot more than I do now.
I used to be such a terrible food shopper and wasting money on food I didn't eat. Such a shame. I've been really zoning into minimalism for 2 years now and I must say... the food shopping is def. that hardest part. I got to the grocery store with a plan for meal prep. love surrounding myself with like minded people! THANKS!
The one souvenir I buy when I travel is a fifty-cent postcard from that city that I send to myself. Cheap, authentic, doesn't take a lot of space and really personal and meaningful.
I’m also 21 and I pretty much do everything you do lmao.. everyone around me is total opposite. They do say when you step out onto a path that will lead you to success, you’ll be stepping out alone. 💯
I don’t buy warranties either. I’ve found that a lot of manufacturers will stand behind their products and usually contact the manufacturer if something goes haywire
All my friends make fun of my car😂 I paid 5k cash for it and never had a payment. Had the damn thing 7 years now and never left me stranded. I always tell people that wanna buy new cars they can’t afford it. If you don’t have the money for it right now, you can’t. Buy a $1k car and when it breaks down, buy another $1k car.
Everyone's different of course, but I think new cars, large houses, and new phones are the three biggest wastes of money for the vast majority of consumers. Is a 2019 G70 really more necessary than a 2010 Sonata?
07 cobalt. All I’ve had to do was change the oil and a tire replacement. Get to know a few mechanics and they will work on your car for next to nothing. It’s nice to know people😎
Dude I would kill for your colbolt I’m driving a 2002 caviler and it’s hot pink I get made fun of so much but I paid 600 and only had to change the brake pads and get new back tires had it for 2 years!
Johnny Lowry, drive it till the wheels fall off! I always tell people, when it breaks down I’ll just take the tags off of it and leave it there😂. It’s been a good car to me. Thinking about getting a moped to ride to work for better gas mileage even though it already gets 25 to the gallon
i live in the city so i'm with you on the car but books are a great investment in my opinion. I think you can easily build a shelf into the wall to avoid books "clutter"
We only read non fiction and most books we keep since they are on topics that are a part of our lifestyle. Those we dont keep get donated to the public library. We also eat healthy and we preserve (dehydrate or can) food and have a well stocked pantry. Live in the California Sierra were we can be snowed in come winter and unable to get to a grocery store 30 miles away. We have bought warranties and am glad we did since we are a family and not having to pay for repairs or replacement has saved us a lot of money re washer/dryer/dishwasher! . All warranty info and the receipts are kept in a file and also scanned and saves on a flash drive.
You're such a well spoken individual for your age. I also really enjoy how your videos are usually one takes with minimal editing. Really enhances the experience and it feels like I'm actually chatting with you in the same room. Well done and keep it up!
You’re spot on about how couponing sometimes has people spending more money on things they don’t need! As much as I love couponing, I’m sometimes guilty of this 😭 Thanks for sharing your tips!
Shocker the youngster is 21 with so much knowledge, you neccessarily don't have to stop spending if you invest properly, I am invested even before I retired, thought my kids and their kids learnt from them, my grandson was watching this and he is 17
hey buddy that is normal in investing with time you ll learn the ropes, but for now I would advice you get invested in stocks, forex and digital currency trading, it is the order of the day and I am reaping heavily

I have been working with her for 3 years now since I retired, I would advice you use her if you got good capital, investment is useless without good capital and due diligence
Couchsurfing is an amazing, cheap + totally safe way to travel. Please don't be afraid to advise it, because of the way CS is set up. Choosing hosts that have an extensive profile combined with lots of references from former hosts/surfers makes it a very low-risk way of traveling. I've heard from several people who got stuff stolen (or worse) in their hotel, but in over 10 years of using CS, I've never heard of anyone having such negative experiences while couchsurfing. On top of this, the experience of having your personal local guide and meeting genuine people, fellow travelers is priceless! ;) Besides this, as someone who retired at a young age myself, following very similar choices in life, I fully agree with your list :)
I totally agree with you. I only buy things I really need in my daily life (food, toilet paper, soaps, etc). I have been traveling a lot for work reasons this last years and I have seen that I can live with only a few things and I like it, I have become minimalist without even look for it haha
Spend less of your money on things, but rather spend your money on experiences. Not only is this a great way to save for the things that matter, but also to live a life, fulfilled. Great content
went one step further: have the travel mug but also take a litre thermos to work in my day bag. Started taking lunches and then snacks also. holy crap, the amount of money i didn't spend in four work weeks staggered me. haven't looked back, either.
Was gonna say the same thing haha I’ve lived in Texas my whole life and you’ll have a hard time getting around if you don’t have a car. I do have to say that Houston has better public transportation than all of the other big cities and you could get away not having a car if you live in certain neighborhoods. But generally, most of Texas is rural so cars are a must
Regarding warranties, I keep all receipts of devices in a special plastic pouch in a folder. I used it once only out of maybe 10 devices, but this one time saved me around 160 bucks . For a 30 second work of putting each receipt in the folder, it's still worth it..
Re: Buying books. I used to love buying books when I still worked and I've kept many, but why not go to the library? You'd save a ton of money. I'm in Toronto, so if I want to reserve a new book that's coming out, I try to reserve it right away, then I get a notification when it's in.
@@hisakiasakura480 Man what a shame!. No library in your town. I live in Houston Texas. And there are 6 libraries in my area. Three that are within walking distance of my apartment. But Houston is a large city.
I really only clothes shop at very specific times of year--specific sale times. My favorite department store has a 75% Fall sale. And that is when I buy the bulk of my items. And sometimes right after Christmas, I do 75% off sales. But they are at very specific places--Barney's and a regional retailer called Fred Segal. They have stuff that is incredibly well made and lasts forever. The rest of the time, I nix the spending. That way, during the spending moment, I'm working with an exact yearly budget...and asking myself hard questions like what will I need for the full year. I don't do internet clothes shopping. I hardly ever buy anything but undergarments for the remainder of the year. At this point, I'm older, so I already have most of my wardrobe in place. I only buy for replacement or update.

Cities are too unaffordable and your quality of life definitely goes down. At least all the cities near me.

There is an old saying concerning sales: "going broke saving money."
Anthony Strom they mean no need to save must make investment 🤔
I've been saving money so I deserve something I want now?"
I think it's breaking the habit of buying something on impulse if you can afford it.
"I deserve it." Those 3 words have caused so much debt in so many lives!!!
This helped me a lot..
Tip: Stop doing those “hey let’s go out for drinks nights with “friends” you don’t really care”
And add in the "happy hour" thing with coworkers. I'm not sure I've ever seen any indication that the "investment" is worth it.
My friends and I do that because there isn't really anything else to do where I live.

On top of this, the experience of having your personal local guide and meeting genuine people, fellow travelers is priceless! ;)
Besides this, as someone who retired at a young age myself, following very similar choices in life, I fully agree with your list :)

I have 80 bucks in gifts cards and they will only be spent on things that I need or a good experience.
Thanks for sharing your tips!
