Why the RETROID POCKET 4 Pro ENRAGES me (PS2 & AYN Odin 2 rant)

  • Take this clip as a subjective, personal take on the subject. I'm annoyed at the Retro Pocket 4 Pro because it COULD HAVE been so great, had they pushed some extra horsepower into that chip.
Retroid was SO CLOSE to reaching perfect and issue-free PS2 emulation on this thing that it's simply annoying that they decided not to go the extra mile.
This would've been such a great alternative to the AYN Odin 2, but oh well. I guess we have all the more reason now to wait for the Retroid Pocket 5.

Yeah, but that was my point. Plenty of other handhelds that don't play PS2 are super pocketable.
Don't get me wrong though, if people are happy with it, then that's awesome. But I still don't get the usecase that this exact iteration of the Pocket fills (pun intended) that others can't (it's not as pocketable as dumb devices like the MM+, nor is it as performant as the Ayn Odin 2).

I have a steam deck and absolutely love it, I'm also a big guy (6ft 220lbs), but even for me, the steam deck can sometimes be "too" big!
Rp4 looks like a nice little handle for the price, but given the huge leap in performance with the Odin 2, I'd say either one is fine depending on your budget!
Personally, I want an Ayaneo Slide! But man, it's $800 for the base model! Not to mention that they come out with these new handhelds so fast that they're basically obsolete as soon as they launch!

The biggest factor for me is the battery. 5000mAh is a complete oversight from Retroid considering that RP4 Pro will have to crank up all the cores to maximum for higher-end systems, making it run hot, and in return, you have to crank up the fan as well, taking an unusually large amount of power to run such a small device.

    • @shecklesmack9563
      @shecklesmack9563 7 місяців тому +2

I saw a test stream of PS2 and the battery was down to 50% in 30 minutes. In a way that makes it less portable than a Steam Deck. I expect a revision in the next 6 months (RP4P+?) that has a better battery because that ain't it.

Number One Reason = DPad. I own a system like this to play Retro games perfectly, and you can't do that on shitty nipple sticks. The DPad being on top is the ONLY way to play awesome retro games. I'm not gonna be twisting my thumb in pretzels to use a low positioned Dpad. Maybe this is just me, but enough people agree to make Retroid place the Dpad in the correct place.

    1) if you travel like me you want something portable to the extreme as I already have my work laptop and iPad in my backpack. My switch lite is big enough that i leave it at home most trips.
    2) I started gaming at NES. Then I’ve owned master system, SNES, mega drive, Saturn, ps1, n64, ps2, ps3, ps4, ps5. I want a handheld emulator for nostalgia. My nostalgia is pre- PS2. I’m not gonna play ps2 games. I’m gonna beam shadow of the colossus ps4 version onto my OLED. Thus most of the attractiveness is N64 and before so I’m considering Retroid 4 pro or 3 plus ahead of an Odin 2. Plus the price difference IS significant to many.

I agree 100%. I bought the RP4 pro, set it all up, went ro play something, and it was no different than the RP3+ I sold to buy it. So I just flipped it on ebay, made my miney nack, and bought the Odin 2. I want to play my games upscaled to at least 1080p, 60fps, snd Retroid just can't do it. I understand people want a pocketable device but to me, playing anything without having to compromise is worth carrying a bag with me. Plus, its not like I'm walking around the office with a game system in my pocket.

I think we all have this fantasy of just gaming on the go, in day-to-day situations, like waiting in line at the supermarket and stuff like this. There's immense freedom in this thought.
Then real life hits, where things aren't as romanticized. We travel less, we're more tired and when we do game out, it's usually while we're sitting down anyway, like on a train ride or something and you have a bigger bag with you anyway.
I totally understand the allure. Or hell, maybe I just think like this because my life might be less exciting than most. 😄
I still feed into this thought though, that's why I either prefer ultra pocketable (dumber) handhelds like the Miyoo Mini Plus as a carry device (which have a clearcut range of what it can play, and does that with no drama), or something comfier, sitting on the couch, in full on capibara mode.

  • @polarized8708

The Odin 1 was still good for anything to emulate, even if you miss some PS2 games. But I was born in the 80s, so I grew up with Super Nintendo and some stuff before. My first console I get as a gift was the Game Boy and later the PSX. But the SNES from my brother gives me the memories like you mentioned before.
So the device has to look like a PAL GameBoy or SNES, that’s why I love the Retroid Pocket 2+/2s and sold my Odin 1, because that thing looks like a modern gaming device with this LED lights. I don’t get these rings, I would prefer illuminated buttons instead much more.
Back to RP4. I don’t know if that is the right tool. From the beginning, I thought it can handle all the PS2 games. But now it seems it doesn’t - even with tinkering. And I hadn’t knew that this thing goes loud, warm and eat the battery. That is what the Odin was awesome. But the Odin is still too big. I like to use this thing as a controller when I want and as a small device.
If you want it all on one device, the only real option is the ROG Ally with the cheap SSD 2GB/4GB mod and EmuDeck for Windows. Than you can play everything from your childhood up to PS4 era (and a lot of PS4/5 and Xbox games are available on Steam). But this thing is huge, have to be always plugged on a charger and most systems are 4:3 - so you get these big black bezels or tinker with widescreen mods - but takes you high res / filtered pixel art or widescreen back to your childhood? Maybe not!
So my actual recommendation is the Retroid 2S, which plays most games like the RP3+ in 4:3, has a nostalgic design, very good buttons and can play all the old classics without any issues and with some shaders and plays even some GameCube or PS2 games.
What we are really want is a device with a 5-6“ OLED screen in 4:3 which doesn’t exist and none of these chinese companys would ever invent for this small amount of devices, a powerful quite Snapdragon like the 8 Gen2 in a small form factor without big bezels.
Than they can charge way higher prizes but I get sure not having to buy every two year a new device to hope it will fulfill my expectations. And I guess your right, when you like 16:9 devices, that the Odin 2 has nearly the best SoC you can buy, so you are well prepared for the future.
Sadly, the emulation side hasn’t improved that much in the last two years, only worth mentioning is Vita3K. But Cemu is very unlikely to happen on Android by now and it seems the most big thing is Switch emulation which doesn’t make any sense to me, because none of these Android devices can match the OLED Switch and you weren’t sure to get all games played without errors or can’t play online.

    • @VladNerd
      @VladNerd  6 місяців тому

You're right on the pocketability factor, the RP4PRO is way more pocketable than the Odin 2. Still, the RP4Pro sits right at the edge of "what it can handle" when it comes to PS2 and other things (was gonna mention Switch emulation but that's a bit uncertain now).
Retroid is smart, they leave themselves an incremental upgrade path between generations where people that have the 4 now will still want to buy the 5 for some performance gains.
The Odin 2 however is clunkier and not really pocketable, but there's a tonn of performance headroom to the point where I can confidently say that it'd still be relevant 3-4 years in the future. (In terms of performance, we're ignoring stuff like Android updates, that's a moot point with all these companies).
At the end of the day, everyone should get what ticks most of their priorities. Pocketability is important to many, and for that RP or "dumb" Linux handhelds are the only way to go currently (or maybe a jailbroken Vita or something).
Enjoy your RP4 Pro, my dude. :)

It runs all my favourite classic games well, its the same size as my phone and the buttons are very good. I dont really see how my rp4pro would become irrelevant if in 4 years its still playing the games im nostalgic for and more. Not to say it cant be improved but your comparison makes very little sense to me, especially when youre telling people they're "investing on their fun". like whats the difference between that and me saying you should just emulate games on a gaming laptop for better performance?

Call me crazy, but I ordered the Retroid Pocket 4. Not the Pro, but the $150 “base”model. I have an Apple TV I can stream my content to wirelessly, (for anything up to PSP, 720p is fine), but I also have a pretty good Windows PC with PS2 emulators setup, which when used along with Parsec, I can play PS2 anywhere I have wifi. With cloud streaming, the performance of this device becomes less of an issue, its great wifi and storage speeds make this a heavy hitter in this price range. Retroid Pocket 3+ is just a few dollars cheaper, so why not upgrade to the 4? I think this logic works with a few tens of dollars, not so much hundreds. I did, however, consider the Odin 2, but it is more than twice the price and as an iPhone 13 Mini user (yes, we exist) I really appreciate a device this capable in a footprint of a regular phone (although a bit more thick). Odin 2 is in no way pocketable, and that was my priority when buying. I get that most people don’t have a cloud gaming server setup (although it is dead easy nowadays) and probably won’t set it up just to get passable performance in these edge-case platforms. I completely get your criticism, there are definitely better products on the market, but if you look at the performance per dollar, this puppy gets you a WHOLE lot whether you went for the $150 or the $200 option.

Ever thought about that the development of AtherSX2 for Android stopped? So you will always be able to emulate PS2 better on systems that can run PCSX2. So if the RP4PRO is not a good solution in your eyes, the Odin is not much better.

I like the energy and delivery but I don’t agree. The RP4 and other similar systems like the RG556 make sense for the price. They’re pocket sized, cheap-ish devices that run everything if you know how to juice performance via settings. The Odin 2 ends up costing the same as a Steam Deck, has IPS display, looks worse than the Steam Deck, and it’s not that much more pocketable than one.
I’d rather get a RP4/RG556 for cheap to scratch my PS2 itch and below on the go, and enjoy it for a couple of years until there’s something with the price tag and form factor of a RPP4, with an AMOLED display, and more performance than the Odin 2 Pro.

So giving you a genuine answer. The main reason someone would buy the RP4 vs the Odin 2 is size. Unless you're wearing cargo pants or a big jacket with deep pockets, the Odin 2 is just not pocketable. There is definitely no argument that the Odin 2 in terms of performance is much better. However for someone who wants a devices to pocket for a quick game session on the go the RP4 gives just a tiny push over the RP3 for just a small bit more performance while retaining that small form factor. There is definitely no right or ring purchase here it depends on what the buy wants, of you only play this at home or you have the means to carry it, and only care for performance Odin 2 hands down. If you want a small form factor, for the best performance you can squeeze out with the low end budget, and great portability RP4 is a great option. Again it all depends on the buyers needs and what they want to buy.

As it stands, the main attraction point of the RP4Pro is its smaller size so I can actually put it in a pocket of my jacket and bust it out on the train when I'm travelling light without a backpack. And, AND - it still plays a lot of the PS2 stuff even if it requires some tweaking, it plays some of the very good Switch stuff that the RP3+ won't handle, it has analog triggers that were omitted before and will come in handy in racing, and it does it all while still being small in size and price.

There are many reasons for me going with the rp4p
    1. Price, at least in Denmark the Odin 2 is over double the price of the rp4p which is the same price as a steamdec. And if i wanted to spend that kind of money, i would just get the steamdec.
    2. Size. The size is perfect for me. It's small enought to fit in my jacket or windbreaker. But not so small it cramps my hand, but the odin 2 or switch or steamdec are not so portable unless you have a backpack with you.
Yes the rp4p is a little limited in ps2 games compared to the odin.
But what i need a handheld to do is more an on the go type thing. And not so much playing for hours and hours on end. It's more ment for a train/plane ride, where i just need to kill some time for a couple of hours. Or a quite time at the park to get some fresh air. And there are PLENTY of games that the rp4p smashes that fulfills that need

You’d rather pay 150 dollars more for a bulkier, gaudy looking device instead of tweaking some settings? We’re not taking about tinkering with memory register hacks here, you literally just need to flip the back end to Vulkan sometimes for most ps2 games to run at full speed 2x resolution.
You need to tweak settings to bump the resolution and turn on full screen hacks for the Odin 2 anyway, this is literally one extra setting, which saves you 150 dollars, for a device that’s actually portable and doesn’t defeat the purpose of the retro HANDHELD appeal.
So let me ask you this: if you’re ok with spending an extra 150 for the Odin 2, why not pay 50 bucks extra for a steam deck or an rog ally? You know those things can emulate ps3 too

I want to emulate up to 6th gen and the newer handhelds (though lightweight Switch would be cool) and a good battery life is a plus (apparently the Steam Deck lacks this so it would likely just be played in bed then and not that portable). RP4P has D-pad on top which I like for the retro stuff and it's small which is nice for my small hands. Steam Deck expensive and BIG but can run PC stuff and looks to have nice ergonomics as well. Odin 2 seems like something inbetween (?). After doing just a little research so far I'm seriously unsure about this choice. Any advice?
Edit: asking prices I see are Odin 2 Pro - 3500SEK (should be able to get that seller down a bit from there though) which is around 327USD/320EUR while RP4P is 2000SEK/187USD/173EUR. Currently not looking at Steam Decks so don't have any particular sale with price in mind there.

I had the same exact dilemma as well. I went with a Lenovo Legion Y700 2023 tablet (the only gaming Android tablet with an 8.8 inch screen on the market) and just slapped a telescopic controller on it (the BSP D8).
It has a SD gen 1, 12gb ram, 256/512gb + an SD card slot for expandability. It breezes through absolutely everything, including what I tried through Yuzu (Inside, South Park - the Fractured Backside, Portal 1 &2, etc).
Honestly, I mostly wanted it for the extra screen size. It makes gaming much more enjoyable and it still isn't really too big. Battery life is great too
Shameless pitch, but if you do decide to go for it, I have links for them in the description. :)

Steam Deck OLED supports 3 hours of gameplay with triple A games. With less demanding, like PS2 emulator, you can get 5 hours.
SD LCD's battery is just not worth it, because it discharges too quickly.

I think the RP4 Pro corners the "it does enough for the portability and pocketability while being capable enough for the price-to-performance" part of the retro handheld gaming market.

Good point. Still, I feel like they could've easily reached ps2 emulation if they added another 15$ to the SOC. But for folks who want a portable device, you're right on the money.

So if i didn’t have any other handhelds i would agree with you. But since i already have steam deck oled legion go and a g cloud the RP4+ fills that truly handheld gap while being powerful enough to entertain me when im without my other devices

I have an rg405m and i agree that playing 60% or whatever of ps2/gc games isnt really a good experience. Always having to worry about performance and mess with frameskips and shit. So i tend to limit myself to systems a handheld can run well. Same goes for the 35xxh. Like it can kind of run n64 but not really so I just dont bother...

There is no way I will be playing the entire PS2 catalogue or even 10% of it. There is a very select couple of dozen games I will be wanting to play (as they were what I played on PS2 as a kid/teen) and I have seen all bar 4 of those games been tested (so far) and all work perfectly.
I personally have no issue changing a couple of settings for the first ever launch of those games, it literally takes 10seconds. I also love 64bit and below consoles, arcade mame etc, so for me the rp4pro is a perfect all in one throw in my man bag (ok its a satchel) solution.
I think you're being a bit harsh on the handheld to be "enraged" by it. There is a reason that people are making a big deal about it and are looking forward to it so much. And not because its rubbish.
$199 vs $369 (USD) is also a massive deal for a lot of people. Thats a lot more cash to fork out to play maybe the 5% more of the PS2 games that the RP4Pro cannot? Not sure too early to say. What I can say is that out of 50 games tested all run perfectly well apart from 2. 1 of those does not run on the Odin2 either as its emulator limited. I wouldn't call that "not being able to run PS2 games very well" at all!
Either way an extra $369 USD is a heck of a commitment to spend on a handheld that (like he rp4pro) will certainly be obsolete this time next year in the same price point. Unless you have money to splash and have done well in life with little to no financial hurdles, then well done must be nice. . .
In conclusion I will say that in this hobby of retro gaming, at least we are spoiled when it comes to options of what handheld suits ones needs and /or wants. What honks my horn might not be what honks the next persons etc . . . So they can go buy their own honker. That suits them.
All the best with your channel. I found it enticing. It definitely engaged me enough to write out this dribble. Which I normally do not! I just tell my wife who nods and goes "ah huh" So well done haha

Here in america i have to pay health insurance. $150 is a lot more than i wanna pay. I dont need EVERY game playing. I am buying this for my kids if it can play mario gamecube, wii and some switch games it paid for itself. Also odin 2 is never available.

Price for Quality, dont need to be a genious. You can have a massive Gamer PC aswell, expend a lot of money on it, and even run PS3 at 2x, the fact tech exist is not determinant. As all of this is a luxury, people will choose what satisfies the itch, costing the less amount of dollars. Simple. Bye.

I dont disagree - $200 is a huge price point for an emulation device that only plays a fraction more games than others at half that price.
At the $200-$350 range is when you would consider actually getting an official console used or retail. The Nintendo Switch will be insane a few years down the line once CFW for it becomes accessible like the 3DS .

    • @VladNerd

It's an arm vs x86 thing. X86 is not as efficient with battery life and gets quite a bit hotter = the handheld has to be even bigger as a result. :)
X86 consoles do have their place though, I personally love them, it's just that they're in a totally different category.
