They were huge in the 90s. I am a child of the 70s, but I ultimately have come down on the 90s as the best musical decade. I went out to Silicon Valley for the internet gold rush. I wasn't that aware of what was going on musically. One of the guys there and I exchanged a couple CDs. He gave me Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Tragic Kingdom, which really kicked me musically into the 90s. I still have both of them in my collection. There's a great video here on UA-cam of her back when they were first starting out, and she's back stage all innocent and glue-gunning her costume together. Eventually of course she went sort of star star studded, plastic modern mode. Another one from then who also sort of went modern plastic mode is Sia. You should do her "The Church of What's Happening Now", which is a killer (and completely organic) tune from the old her.
Apparently Gwen was told when she was in high school that she'd never be a professional singer. A music teacher told her that whilst she could sing, her voice was too uncontrollable. All the things that make Gwen's voice unique were apparently "problems." Too much vibrato, a tendency to put in too many wails, crys and scoops in her voice & a pitch that always sat just on the right edge of being unpleasantly piercing. But, of course, its all those things that make her iconic. Despite crossing multiple genres of music from rock, to ska, reggae to rap, to classic pop, you can always recognise Gwen's voice.
I’m not even a no doubt fan and I think she is fucking incredible. I just went threw a couple hours of watching her live shows and I’m so blown away. Not only does she have a killer stage presence but her singing is amazing.
This entire concert is something else. Returning to their home town after a long tour for final two nights at a venue they used to joke about being famous enough to play, and absolutely blowing the roof off the place. So much joyful energy throughout, love it!
The whole Tragic Kingdom tour is fantastic. there is a whole set from Anaheim that used to be on VHS (can be found on youtube too). There is a really cool medley in the middle of the set as well.
I’m a 80s heavy metal fan but I love this song and ND. Never got to see ND live but I did catch Gwen on her Harjuku Girls tour. She’s that unique and good.
this performance was a year after she damaged her vocal cords and was told to tone it down. her vocals back in 1996 were crazy and amazing, i miss young crazy gwen
@@Estcentury"No Doubt got its scare about a month ago, when singer Gwen Stefani developed voice problems and received doctor’s orders to rest her tour-battered vocal cords or risk serious damage. The Halloween show was the band’s return from enforced inaction." 1996
I got to see No Doubt play in Berkeley, Ca for their self titled album, smoked with Gwen's brother and Tom. A year latter Eric was out and Tragic Kingdom dropped.
You looked like you just had to stop in amazement. By just listening to your anaylsis, I have a new appreciation for how singers approach a song. Kudos to you for enlightening us that it's not as easy as it may seem.
I saw No Doubt at Arco Arena in Sacramento, California back in 1998... and I loved how Gwen and the band slowed down the outro (Hush, hush, darlin') on the live version of the song to add a little more emotion to the ending.
Gwen’s performance in this performance was absolutely magical! You can’t get better than that, she was my ❤throb at the time! Nice review and comments 💖 Your cover of Wicked game was beautiful!
I was almost 30 when "Don't Speak" (and No Doubt) hit me like a ton of bricks! I had just gotten out of 4 years service in the US Army which I had joined to flee the complications of my first marriage. Soon after all that, I had foolishly fell in love again with new girl in the town where my last days of military service ended. In a span of only a couple years my heart was destroyed twice (well, "big-time" destroyed in comparison to the less-destructive girlfriend break-ups along the way, lol.) But anywho, My 2nd wife and I were getting together at about the time this song came out. We both loved the brutal sadness of this mega-hit song! (Alas, by the the time 2000 rolled around, she had decided her and my best-friend were a better match than me and her!) ...but, don't weep for me folks! I've been with Andrea, my best gal of all ever since! (Andrea is a GREAT natural untrained singer! Here is a version of "Don't Speak" we did a few years ago (another girl, Amanda sang the 1st verse with Andrea joining in on harmony and taking the second from then on. ua-cam.com/video/bKYEuU4ujuY/v-deo.html ) This was from a live rehearsal, NOT a "studio" session. ...lol, I'm drunk and talking too much! WHEEEEEEE! (Said the snail riding the turtle!) 🤪
I was always a big fan, but when I finally saw them live in the mid 2000s on a reunion tour, I realized just how frickin' amazing they all are as musicians, and Gwen's stage presence and live performance were unreal. It moved them up in my book from a great band to an all-time band, because I've seen plenty of bands I thought were great live and been quite disappointed.
One thing to admire about Gwen Stefani is thst she had a hell of a stamina. Not that many singers of any gender or music genre have that kind of energy wnd still be able to belt out tunes.
If this was at the Long Beach Auditorium, then I was at this concert. They were excellent and she did pushups while swearing to get into the mood before the first song.
they were pretty great live, often better than the recordings with the energy they brought. The whole show Live at Tragic Kingdom is phenomenal, especially Sunday Morning
Ah Yay, we must be a similar age...This is right in the nostalgia sweet spot - I've been hoping you would cover No Doubt and Gwen for a while now. 13 year old me fell fully in love with her...
I'm just a few years younger I would have been 8 or 9 when I first saw No Doubt on MTV. As I've gotten older and looked back on things I've realized just how influential Gwen was in what I find attractive in women.
Online it says Beth was born in 1995, but that’s only 2 years before this - so can’t be right for her nostalgia sweet spot! It’s in mine also and I was born in ‘84 - so perhaps 1985 makes more sense as her birth year than ‘95?!
"Don't Speak" was a truly massive hit song that has always gotten a fair bit radio play through the years, even still today. So if Beth was born in 1995, then she was 12-ish, circa 2007. Guess what, that was the height of solo Gwen mania, with "The Sweet Escape" dominant on radio, alongside "Hollaback Girl" and "Cool" from her first solo offering. With interest in Gwen at an all-time high, her No Doubt era hits were in relatively heavy rotation too, particularly " Don't Speak". Also, it's hardly a stretch for interest in an artist to lead to a dive into their back catalog. Seems like a logical serious music lover thing to do. 😊
Always thought Gwen was nothing short of a phenomenal singer, mostly because of this live recording. After No Doubt split, there hasn't been any song that did justice to her bewildering amount of raw talent, or at least none that made it to mainstream music in Europe, and I have to say I really regret that...
Great reaction and analysis, as always. I think I need to revisit this album. I remember liking it, but I was working at mu college radio station at the when it came out and we had to play the A LOT. So, I got a little sick of it. I think enough time has passed that I'll be able to appreciate it again.
Talk about a band that far more than a sum of its parts. IMHO it starts with Adrian Young's drumming which always sounds like the work of two Drummers, then of course Gwen's vocals and song writing, with Tony's bass and Tom's guitar topping the whole thing off. I still remember being blown away by this track when I first heard it and it's lost none of its impact since then.
I think her going off key is intentional. She’s singing like she’s crying. It’s a breakup song and she’s expressing that emotion. It’s also 90s punk/ska rock. It’s part of the style, from what I remember. Like every boy punk band sounded like whining little kids in the late 90s and early 2000s.
It's obvious that when she goes off key slightly, it's for effect, or perhaps, affect. She nails the key in the most important parts. I'm 58 and still love this song. The classical acoustic solo is beautiful, and really fun to play. :-D
In the same concert in Anaheim , Tragic Kingdom stands out as a great performance by all members of the band. They didn’t spare themselves on stage, that’s for sure. Edit: if you sing this song more melodic it reminds me of “Killing me softly.”😅
The really messed up thing about this song is Gwen wrote this song about her relationship with the bass player, who had to perform the song over & over again with her.
Tragic Kingdom was the first CD I ever owned. I didn't even have a CD player. There's a fun live song of Sublime with Gwen doing I Saw Red. Not sure if you've reacted to Save Ferris songs. They did a cover of Come on Eileen you might like
I remember when i as was younger and heard and saw this for the first time on MTV (back when M stod for music), it took me a long time to realize she was nok Donna from Beverly Hills 90210 :-D I think back then when No Doubt and 4 non blonds raiden the radio, and MTV the music was mixing acting, feeling and art. i think that gwen stefany in this song is more like it is in metal bands the voice is made to support the lyrics NOT to be "beautifull" for exemple if you listen to "fear of the dark" from iron maiden there is that " uneasyness" in the voice to make the lyrics of someone that feel fear of is surounding because of the dark, same with metalica "master of puppets" there is "hatred" and "killing and sufering" intend to sustain that what is speaking is the drug itself that kill the one taking it! i think that's the way at least in heavy metal singing with the "intention" of the lyrics ( it's more or less like acting) GS in "don't speak" sing with that "ibtention" of suffering and running away that the lyrics give!

appreciate this lore!
She wrote songs to SUIT her voice, rather than just copy paste everyone else's style. That's why so many No Doubt songs are so iconic
She rewrote the song, and the Band blew up, and she had to perform it every night with him for the next 2-3 years.
She sounds really good live.
