  • Puppy biting is a common challenge for a lot of new puppy owners. Often, a puppy won't bite one member of a family, but the other family members continue to have their puppy bite them! In this video, we'll show you some really simple exercises to stop puppy biting. Being a clear, consistent and fair leader for your puppy is an important step in having a well behaved dog. After watching this video, you'll have learned how to be a great leader for your puppy and your puppy will start to understand that you aren't a chew toy, and you're certainly not a littermate. The 4 puppy leadership exercises you're about to watch are simple to do, and require just a few minutes for each exercise. With a regular routine of training, and lots of consistency, you will be able to play with your puppy without having to set out the bandages beforehand.

The owner in this video really needs to be assertive but not mean. Her dog senses she is too gentle with the discipline and it won't work if you are training your puppy. I can tell McCann is gently telling her to be more authoritative because the puppy listens to the trainer but not much with the owner. I hope she finally got it after this session. All of their training videos is so effective. The collar grab really works. Thank you so much!

I'm gonna do those 4 exercises, I'm taking notes right now to sync it with other family members. I'd like to play with my labrador, but he often goes for some aggressive play lying on his back like you described at 8:25. He doesn't do it all the time, but only when he's relaxed after he slept a while and tries to goof around. He licks and gnaws on lots of things. He licks trousers, the radiator, walls, shoes, socks.
I watched the videos with the house line, but he'd probably use it as a chew toy.

So important to do these exercises with any dog of any age and get the used to collar grabs etc. I also ramp it up once we've got some training under the belt and do "emergency" grabs where I fake a panicked version of the collar grab so the dog is not going to freak out and go into avoidance if we get into and emergency situation.

I am a first time dog owner of a Standard Poodle puppy, now 6 months old. Since we got him, my son and I, in September last year, it's been very very hard. Today, on the way back from our morning walk, I was crying. Literally. I have both arms bruised, blue/purple. Sevag bites me while we're walking all the time. It is painful. It is no fun. Sometimes I am able to distract him and he stops, but recently, most of the time, I am not able to and he gets me every time. Today, crying, on the way back, I vowed not to take him on another walk before I find a solution. I came home and got on UA-cam. Bumped into this video, watched it and a few others of yours. I am hoping I can do this. I actually did with Sevag what you taught in this video, the "its' your decision trick" and it brightened my rather gloomy/hopeless day at how he responded in a matter of seconds. He jumps on us all the time, tries to bite us all the time and I don't know how to stop it. I will keep on watching and learning from your videos. Something I should've done a while back. Thank you.

Why don’t you make the jump and actually hire a trainer to train you how to handle your dog. It would be worth the investment or you will never like your dog and your dog already doesn’t like you. YOu need to take control but you need someone who has experience to show you how.

Setoucha, I am with you. I am on my sixth standard poodle and this is the worst time I have ever, every had or imagined. My arms, too, look like that of a 90-year-old woman, all bruised and purple. I look like a self-abuser. I am terribly tired and frustrated. Am taking my pup for training. Fourth lesson coming up and I want it to be directed solely on the biting reflex, which is what it is. My puppy is 18 weeks old. He doesn't bite while walking, but attempts to eat everything in site. Natural, of course, and I can usually easily dislodge whatever he finds. The play biting occurs at home and sometimes becomes very rough, with him lunging at me and baring his teeth (as much as a cute puppy can); nonetheless, it is very disconcerting. I know how you feel. Have tried what McCann is showing to little avail, thus far. My pup is extremely willful, but there is that split second (and I mean split second) when he actually calms down and I can give him a treat to squeeze in some positive reinforcement. This is a full-time job for me these days. I am exhausted and nearly vow daily to never go through this again. He's more like a piranha than a puppy. But trust me, when we have nailed down what needs to be done, it will be extremely rewarding and that pup of yours will love you to pieces. Be sure, too, that the pup is getting enough sleep. If you have children, sometimes they tend to keep him going for too long. Be also sure that at night, lights are out, maybe the crate is covered (as a signal to rest and be quiet). I even close the shutters in my puppy's room after I noticed that the moonlight covered his playpen at night. Not good. In the meantime, keep a pocket full of treats to be ready to reward your pup for the slightest good thing he is doing. God bless and good luck. And eat your spinach! We will need plenty of fortitude in the months to come!

omg....found a pup 2 mos ago and it's been a nightmare with biting and jumping--but bad on me for not trying to train her. SO, she jumps on my legs periodically whne I 'm the computer. I do like and let her to this--she's giving me love and I return it. However, I before this video, when I wanted her down, I pushed her away. I promise: on the 10-11th try of saying "down" after she hopped up, she obeyed the command! Let me assure you, she has had no training and vet says about 8mos-1yr. Can't wait to view more helpful hints! Thank you Kayl!

Everything here is completely accurate. We’ve had several GSD’s including now a 3 month old ( who might be possessed lol ) these dogs need a LOT of things to do and everyone in the home should be a part of the training. I’m not talking about 10 minutes once in a while. It should be almost constant. They love it, it’s just how they’re wired. However, all that being said don’t think your GSD puppy will not stop bitting and nipping. It’s just what they do.

Excellent tips. I recently adopted a stray from the rescue shelter, who they said is about 4 yrs old. But he behaves like a puppy in many respects with his jumping, biting, wildness, wetting, and the usual puppy types of bad behavior. I already tried Tip #2, and it was great! We did it for 2-3 min, and he was getting it. He does respond well to his name and to "on me", which is a major hurdle. But I am going to use Tip #4 to reinforce that name recognition behavior. GREAT VIDEO!!!

Glad you’ve found it so helpful, Paul! I’m so glad that you’ve identified the need for some “puppy training” with your adult dog. Your training has more to do with the level of understanding and less to do with the dog’s actual age. Have fun with the process. Happy Training ~Ken

Very good video. As a guy living alone and who just a got a puppy 5 days ago (golden retriever) and she is getting a little too much into puppy-biting and jumping for my face or hair, I realize I need to establish better leadership with my dog. However, I really like to cuddle with her and also give her belly rubs etc. I guess there's a really fine line and a balance I am going to need to master.

This video couldn’t have come at a better time bc I’m a witness of how little behaviors escalate. My 3 mo gsd/boxer started lifting his paw up when I was trying to train holding his collar (addressing excitement nipping) but I should’ve been clear about his paw as well. A week later he started jumping up on me and nipping loose clothing. Now I’m in this mess and idk what to do bc he didn’t do this before. He doesn’t do this to my boyfriend. I’m a much smaller girl and home with him mostly, so I also play with him more than he does.
I’m gonna try these tips and hope I can tackle the litter mate treatment behavior. Any more tips on jumping and biting loose clothing please help!

Dogs understand everything that is explained clearly. Teaching a human to not be lame is an entirely different matter.
Timing is essential but it is super hard to teach someone to dance if they have no sense of rythm.

I have a 3 month old Bernese, and I'm having difficulty reinforcing his behavior. The two big items I'm working on is biting and barking. We have a 5 year old chihuahua in the house that he is endlessly distracted by, and wants to play with, but the chihuahua doesn't reciprocate, so he keeps barking, and mouths us for attention when he doesnt find it in the chihuahua. I find even after doing training on the barking and biting in a few 15-30 minute sessions each day, I have trouble keeping up an reinforcing this behavior throughout the entire day. He usually begins acting up within 15 minutes after each session. It's hard to do all day training every day, and making sure he gets his time to run his energy dry outside. Do you have any suggestions?
On a side note: My parents had their two Bernese trained at your facility over 10 years ago, and they came out wonderful, you do fantastic work!

Really nice job, I have extensive experience with showing dogs and working dogs, all were both, none of which were pushover breeds and all were alpha, (Bouvs, GSDs, BRTs). These are great exercises and have to admit I picked up a couple of things I hadn't thought of, we can all learn something new no matter what our experience. But I have to say that although you were working on puppy biting etc. this dog made you guys look soooo good this is such a great puppy! I'm not saying this dogs a piece of cake and it doesn't count, but it would have been better if he was more naughty which of course is not your fault and all credit cannot be given to the puppy but also what a nice job you guys did. Thanks for the nice video

Excellent video! I’m concerned with that lady in purple though. She sits like she is making herself small and not dominate and the dog picks up on her. Such a difference in outcomes between instructor and student. Powerful voice, confidence and stature mean so much in the success of the training. I hope by now she is doing better!
