Love the realistic dogs you always use not the ones that already know what their doing allows people like me to look at realistic body language etc. Great work as always.
OMG! Just came in from a walk with my beautiful Rottweiler girl, nearly 6 years old. She came to me like a gift from heaven nearly 2 months ago. And lets just say that walking on a leash was not here strongest side:) But after watching this video and others from Mcann, we have gone from her nearly pulling my arm off when smelling something good, to actually for the whole walk totally changed mindset. (read: Me). After trying out inside, doing some exercises in the back before going off, we had the best walk and time of our days together. Just a few corrections along the way. What a difference! I can not wait for our next walk and the weeks to come to practice this to make it become the new normal. Both Lizzie and I are so grateful. Thank you!

What a fantastic training session. I've recently adopted a 3 year old cocker spaniel from the kennel. And hes jumped in the water 4 times chasing ducks... Hes a good boy though, I'm sure if I can replicate atleast 10% of this video he'll start doing better :')

Thank you for all the great training videos! We had two dogs and had to put one down a year ago (had him 13 years) and had to put the other down this year (had her 14 years) and we decided to adopt two dogs from the humane society. One is a two year old 18 pound beagle/chihuahua mix who is eager to please and he likes to stay close to us and is quick to come when called. The other is a 9 month old Bulldog mix who is very intelligent and very motivated by praise and food, but she doesn't listen if there's a big distraction (like our outdoor cats in the yard). She has been very quick to learn not jumping up (thanks to the tips from one of your videos). I ordered a long lead just now so we can start using things from this video to work on re-call and staying close. It's difficult because the two dogs love playing with each other and chasing each other around the yard, but it isn't fenced. There's no traffic to worry about, but our yard is surrounded by woods and we don't want her chasing a deer or getting bit by a snake.
This is perfect! I have a 5 month doodle and recently walks with her have gotten so bad to where I don't even want to take her because she pulls so much but I will try these tricks and see how it goes.

Thanks SO MUCH for all of this! I've been trying to do all of this with my dog but I was making mistakes in some parts. Really hope to see better results with this 😊😊
Very best tutorial, I could understand perfectly, thank you for helping, this is entirely the problem with my dog, and now I could follow as demonstrated
Carol's explanations are clear but this is only partly useful. When Carol is approaching the gate and the lead suddenly gets tense, Lucy comes straight back to Carol to start again. That doesn't happen to us. When our dog Paco pulls, he just keeps pulling and maintains the tension in the lead himself. If I try to gently bring him back to me, he resists and the tension in the lead is maintained. I just don't get how she so easily gets Lucy to go back with her in order to start the process of approaching the gate again. This is a problem with so many dog training videos, where there's no acknowledgment that the dog won't necessarily respond the way it's 'supposed' to and there's no instruction about what to do in those circumstances.
Brilliant video, sounds silly but never thought about using both lines at the same time and agree with the jumping up at me. Recently I have allowed my collie on a walk to jump when he comes back to me it is obviously a lot more fun since doing this his recall has become even better
"It's gonna look like you and i are doing something together! :D" hahahahaha she sounded so excited when she said it xD "i AM the squirrel!! I'm the most exciting!!" So adorable!!! Hahahahaha
My dog heels beautifully as long as he knows I have treats. As soon as I'm out, he pulls. He waits for OK before going through a door or jumping out of the car.
Thank you for the video, can't wait to put all this to use! Would love to see this with an energetic dog though. My 9 month old would be pulling rather than peacefully lying down while I'm standing still as you were while talking to us
I love Carol, she is awesome!!! I’ve been trying to do a lot of these exercises with my 18 weeks old border collie mix but he always get overly excited whenever I try to play and engage him. He would start to nib and jump all over me, and then I have trouble calming him down afterward, so the session doesn’t always end pretty without me yelling him to stop 😥😥
I find when we try to get my puppy to stop biting and jumping, he thinks we’re continuing to play if we raise our voice to him (lab/mastiff mix) , but we when start to talk calmly and gently he is (usually) starting to understand that means calm down. He’s not perfect but he’s getting so much faster at understanding us :) good luck!

Hi Carol, I love your training vids! I have a 1 year old 70 lb Pitbull. I’ve tried lots of ways to stop my baby from pulling on walks. He’s getting way to strong for me and nothing is working for us. HELP!
This video was so good! Carol, thank you for breaking it down for us! I always wondered how to really train a dog to be off leash. I’m still working on building a good relationship with my youngest pup (we don’t call him the tiny terror for nothing 😆) but have high hopes to build up to this!
Dogs should ALWAYS be on a leash when outside. In many cities it's mandatory according to by-laws. Or suffer a stiff fine. That and there are so many other reasons why all dogs should be on a leash--see's a rabbit across the street and decides to chase it. See's dog buddy...decides to run across a street. Jumps on stranger who's afraid of dogs being friendly. Meets an aggressive dog. Sees a food scrap on the ground it wants...Only time they should be off leash is in an enclosed dog park or in one's own enclosed backyard.
I am definitely going to try this well, a more modified version because I have back issues and cant move that much. So far my dog is amazing but he pulls on walks. But he can sit stay clmes most of the time when called, he even high fives, bows, and if I say boop he comes and touches his nose to my finger. I'm really good at teaching him adorable tricks and less good at realistic tricks

I have a perfect dog to be worked with. Excited immediately when outside, my pit mix, Queen likes to chase critters/birds/cars, and when there's another dog, she totally loses focus. She pulled my wife down in the street.
You probably need start things the MOMENT you put on the leash...don't even go thru your front door until the dog is able to do so in a calm manner. Dog starts to pull stop walking and don't proceed forward until they offer their attention again. I think that was the intention behind demonstrating the exercise at the gate. Once dogs get the idea that acting impulsive is getting them nowhere they tend to catch on pretty quick in my experience.
My dog trainer had us use a prong collar, with the prongs faced to the back of his neck, so it'd feel like his mom telling him to slow down instead of pulling into his throat. Also, he had us walk with the leash at our sides, but with minimal slack. So he walks next to people great, but he never really caught on to not pulling if he has the chance. He doesn't want to pull, but without the collar he does. It works GREAT. But now, since we go to the dog park and other places like tennis courts with enclosed fences, it's leash off, then zoomies around the fence perimiter. I've heard Siberian Huskies are basically never going to be off leash dogs. I want mine to be, but I know the odds are heavily stacked against me. If he never is capable of it, that's fine, but I'd rather do my best and try. All the dog parks around here are usually occupied by one or two other dogs, and if my dog isn't the chasing other dogs, other off leash dogs are going after the ones showing up for light training with their owners. So it's either you're being disrupted or your dog is disrupting others. What solutions are there for pet owners who don't have a fenced yard or a local dog park that isn't full of 2-12 other dogs? For a husky
Wow I love this video. I got a gsd and he is entering his 10th month and has never had this no tugging habit in him. Do you think there is hope for him even though he is 9 months + old? he barks a lot at dogs and taking him out on the road is well… umm… always an experience :p
I wish I knew what I was doing wrong. I'm crying as I type this as I feel like a failure. I'm active I'm structured but I'm not her leader and I need help.
@@jachammer9138 don’t get discouraged! It takes months for puppies to learn these things! Which is much faster than babies haha but it can still feel like a long time. Keep it as fun as possible for your sanity and for the little ones sanity as well :)
Tried this long line with a lab pup years ago, in seconds he figured the game and scooped up loops of line, jerked on it and ran down road with 15 ft of clothesline in his mouth, when he was on leash he took the slack in his mouth and steered the kids holding the leash where he wanted to go. Now live where dog park won't allow leash , treats or toys or long line work in park so when got rescue dog had nowhere to do work that was fenced, relatively squirrel free where could use treats. But he seems to like watching this video... do you think he will learn from screen?
Great video, just wonder if would be possible to see example of more extreme case. I am walking a Westie who does not respond the same way as Lucy here, he just pulls and stays in pull position when I stop as soon as he starts pulling, absolutely does not want to return back whatever I do.

Great lesson!
I like that
Nice Video. This was helpful with my Plot.
If you let your dog pull you are saying yes pull! Do not let dogs pull, it is that simple. Dog training easy, people training difficult!
Exactly! We need puppy training for mom and dad, not our little guy! Haha
That would be awesome 😎
That’s a good trainer.
This is great help thank you!
Great vid!
I really like you style.
I am the squirrel !
Great video, just wonder if would be possible to see example of more extreme case. I am walking a Westie who does not respond the same way as Lucy here, he just pulls and stays in pull position when I stop as soon as he starts pulling, absolutely does not want to return back whatever I do.
Thanks Carol, such a great video and lots of fun to watch! What length was the long line you used here?
i have a trainer crush on carol
Lol, she just explains everything so clearly!
What if your dog is a super stubborn pitbull that just sits down if you dont let him pull
