OMG! Just came in from a walk with my beautiful Rottweiler girl, nearly 6 years old. She came to me like a gift from heaven nearly 2 months ago. And lets just say that walking on a leash was not here strongest side:) But after watching this video and others from Mcann, we have gone from her nearly pulling my arm off when smelling something good, to actually for the whole walk totally changed mindset. (read: Me). After trying out inside, doing some exercises in the back before going off, we had the best walk and time of our days together. Just a few corrections along the way. What a difference! I can not wait for our next walk and the weeks to come to practice this to make it become the new normal. Both Lizzie and I are so grateful. Thank you!
Love the realistic dogs you always use not the ones that already know what their doing allows people like me to look at realistic body language etc. Great work as always.
I agree - i have 4 favs: McCann Dog Training ( i even stay up all night ( when i can) to catch their live show - they always answer the questions , they are great at engaging us, positive and so cool :) , Then Kikopup ( poor girl just lost her new puppy, Dream, only 10 weeks old ). I also watch. Michael Ellis at Leerburg( incredible talented and emphatic AND superfunny. Lol.. ) and off course : School of Canine Science - they are also awesome. . I LOVE this part of youtube :)
I have a 1yr old recuse that I've had for only 2 weeks and he pulled non-stop while on-lead. I did this session with him just one and I'm astounded, we can now walk almost continually on a loose lead! Great actionable tips. Letting him realise that he is his own barrier to going where he wants when he pulls works well.
First video I have watched on this channel and totally impressed.👍👍 Instructor Carol is fantastic. She is like a psychologist for dogs and humans. Second, I like that there isn't annoying in your face selling of products like other overly comercial channels. Straight to the instructions.. Wonderful video here. Thanks friends!!

honestly, the blue loading bar thing is the best. if I get impatient I look at it and don't have to wonder how much time before the next section. Oddly it's calming enough that I don't skip forward. You know how to train humans as well!
Love this exercise. I have a young puppy that doesn’t pay attention to me. She also only comes when she wants to. I think I see where we are dropping the ball.
What a fantastic training session. I've recently adopted a 3 year old cocker spaniel from the kennel. And hes jumped in the water 4 times chasing ducks... Hes a good boy though, I'm sure if I can replicate atleast 10% of this video he'll start doing better :')
I did this with a client recently, the dog was dragging me down the street, she still had the leash tight every so often but I used a similar method like the one on the video and it worked wonders!
I love McCann's videos and training style. I wish I had known about your methods 40 yrs ago! Love Carol's enthusiasm and her explanations and rationale.
Well done! Exactly in this way we are doing our everyday walks. Having fun together! Give the dog a reason to develop the world together with you and a reason to stay on your side.
We just rescued 2 pups. I am having one pup and will be staying here for another 2/3 weeks maybe longer so the pups will be together. I believe they are around 12 weeks (3 months old). In the house here, we have a nervous + reactive Dutch Shepherd + I have a 19 year old Jack Russell X Mancheater Terrier and a bouncy Jack Spaniel (i think). These pups are Frenchie x Chiwuwa (know i misspelled). I am looking forward to learning more training. Great video, thank you!
I can just imagine the looks I’ll get from walking back and forth to get into a gate loool. The most challenging thing of dog training is having the time to do it and ignoring all the people around you, and hoping they don’t run up your dog and ruin your training

You're awesome. Easy to understand step by step instructions I love how you interact with Lucy...."go be a dog" Lol that's exactly what I say to my dogs.
Thank you for all the great training videos! We had two dogs and had to put one down a year ago (had him 13 years) and had to put the other down this year (had her 14 years) and we decided to adopt two dogs from the humane society. One is a two year old 18 pound beagle/chihuahua mix who is eager to please and he likes to stay close to us and is quick to come when called. The other is a 9 month old Bulldog mix who is very intelligent and very motivated by praise and food, but she doesn't listen if there's a big distraction (like our outdoor cats in the yard). She has been very quick to learn not jumping up (thanks to the tips from one of your videos). I ordered a long lead just now so we can start using things from this video to work on re-call and staying close. It's difficult because the two dogs love playing with each other and chasing each other around the yard, but it isn't fenced. There's no traffic to worry about, but our yard is surrounded by woods and we don't want her chasing a deer or getting bit by a snake.
Love this video. Carol--love watching you work Lucy and teach us why you're doing what you do. My Golden is 7 months old, and I've stopped letting him off leash, except if we are way back in a field, due to adolescence. lol But I love it when he's on long line and checks in with me. "You're checking in with Mama? Great!"
Carol's explanations are clear but this is only partly useful. When Carol is approaching the gate and the lead suddenly gets tense, Lucy comes straight back to Carol to start again. That doesn't happen to us. When our dog Paco pulls, he just keeps pulling and maintains the tension in the lead himself. If I try to gently bring him back to me, he resists and the tension in the lead is maintained. Dogs should ALWAYS be on a leash when outside. In many cities it's mandatory according to by-laws. Or suffer a stiff fine. That and there are so many other reasons why all dogs should be on a leash--see's a rabbit across the street and decides to chase it. See's dog buddy...decides to run across a street. Jumps on stranger who's afraid of dogs being friendly. Meets an aggressive dog. Sees a food scrap on the ground it wants...Only time they should be off leash is in an enclosed dog park or in one's own enclosed backyard.
Sore hands? Ha ha. One dog i had…..finally ruined an already bad shoulder from playing tennis wrong….love it. Im have done walk three. This is ideal. Plus i will add….its not about the walk its about the loose leash. Personally i dont do heel. I like a somewhat casual arrangement. That might be less clear but this is the best advice ive seen! And ive seen many from several different dogs ive owned. Its harder if you havent raised them from a puppy
Wow I love this video. I got a gsd and he is entering his 10th month and has never had this no tugging habit in him. Do you think there is hope for him even though he is 9 months + old? he barks a lot at dogs and taking him out on the road is well… umm… always an experience :p
My dog heels beautifully as long as he knows I have treats. As soon as I'm out, he pulls. He waits for OK before going through a door or jumping out of the car.
Tried this long line with a lab pup years ago, in seconds he figured the game and scooped up loops of line, jerked on it and ran down road with 15 ft of clothesline in his mouth, when he was on leash he took the slack in his mouth and steered the kids holding the leash where he wanted to go. Now live where dog park won't allow leash , treats or toys or long line work in park so when got rescue dog had nowhere to do work that was fenced, relatively squirrel free where could use treats. But he seems to like watching this video... do you think he will learn from screen?
I am definitely going to try this well, a more modified version because I have back issues and cant move that much. So far my dog is amazing but he pulls on walks. But he can sit stay clmes most of the time when called, he even high fives, bows, and if I say boop he comes and touches his nose to my finger. I'm really good at teaching him adorable tricks and less good at realistic tricks
This is great to hear Kris, I created a loose leash walking playlist for you to check out to help on those walks! ua-cam.com/play/PL7BBgLulhermnaWHjX1PI8s1lv4iMsaF4.html Happy Training! ~ Dan
I’ve been really trying to focus on name response for my puppy. He sits pretty well in the house and even outside okay for now but he has a hard time responding to his name consistently. I do short range practice in the house using a toy or his kibble as a treat. I may bring a toy outside. He like playing with sticks and leaves and other things when we go out side so a toy may help reinforce his response outside. Thanks for the tips.

That would be awesome 😎
Great video. Merci!

What a great video❤
Very helpful! I've got an older border collie who has horrible leash manners. I'm hoping these skills can help me teach her better manners.
Another fantastic video! This seemed to come at the perfect time
Oh gosh she's such a gorgeous dog I'd love to know what she's mixed with
