Gen 9's Disappointing New Mythical.

- Pecharunt is finally here in Pokemon Competitive Singles, and it's a little disappointing.
Despite a signature ability and move that seem excellent, crippling weaknesses and a strange Stat distribution will make life a bit difficult for this Pokemon in Gen 9 OU.
That's what I think anyway. I have very good and correct opinions about such things.

Some will never figure out how to get Pecharunt in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Pecharunt Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Pecharunt Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on UA-cam. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

The state of OU right now is crazy: "This Pokémon has an 100 base power STAB move that has a 50% chance to badly poison and confuse a Pokémon at the same time. It's not very good..."
Agreed. Having an amazing Def means nothing if it doesn't've a decent SpD as well, sadly, especially when it has meh HP comparatively.
@@GoinGreninja AV is good since you can spread status by just attacking but you lose recover and parting shot so idk
@@sovietspaceshipExactly. It has some niche, but said niche makes its survivability worse. That's why it doesn't feel like it'd ever be good in OU or even UU. What having no coverage moves and odd balanced stats does to a Pokémon
@@AZV0108 I was suprised when i saw the stat spread too i was like damn is that a suboptimal distribution in a post gen 7 game? is gamefreak actually starting to test some of their stuff?

@@harshjaria2136 if it makes you feel better, I read it as buffed dolphin and instantly thought of Palafin.
To be fair it's always been like this, the viability of all pokemon except the top threat is dependent on how they interact with the top threats. The only thing that has changed is that the power level of top threats has increased through generations.
That's not really unique to this gen, that's just how a meta works. Powercreep IS insane this gen, but that's not why the viability relies on other pokemon

While I think mr. Cool brings up some good points, I think he’s seriously underestimating Pecharunt’s insane ability to make others do the chicken dance against their will, which could surely shake up the ou metagame
So called free-thinkers when a tiny purple thing offers them free food:
The enemy can't play if they can't build a team, and they can't build a team if they're too busy chicken-dancing.

And it might just be the most annoying new DLC Pokemon yet.
This thing's signature move and signature ability are downright nefarious.
however, this pokemon isnt without its shortcomings
And it may actually struggle to keep up with the high power level of Gen 9 OU.
No
I mean, I wouldn't call it disappointing.
It's the only bulky ghost that has curse and recover, and it perfectly checks kingambit if it kingabmbit teras. That on it's own is not bad at all.
A grassy seed / leftovers with toxic - sub - curse hex / parting shot / protect combined with a rilaboom is... quite annoying.
so it's not that bad
I feel like its not meant to be a good mon. Mythicals are supposed to be unique, special and fun, as well as being big to the lore. It will be a solid RU mon but its jist a bit of fun. Much better than the usual 100 stat spread across the board
i get the attempt at novelty and variation but i agree with jim in which this thing is a coinflip machine and will make any metagame in which it is relevant less fun

Just move into RU in a couple of months and no one is gonna miss you.
Imo you’re kinda discrediting how good the peach can be, I reached 1800 with a grassy terrain team that actually lets it beat stuff like Lando and some tusk sets with ease, and it’s not like they want to come in on malignant chain, the fact that the move basically forces your opponent to either bring in their steel/poison type or face a coin flip to get toxic and confused is lovely cuz you can bring in your checks to them
yep, which is why it is severely underrated in my opinion. Being an awful annoyance against anything non steel or poison means that you are forcing them to switch in, which is an inherent value in on itself. You can also run a bulky curse - recover set to similar results.
Also peachrunt teraed into anything not weak to steel or dark is a perfect counter to kingambit to the point of making that mon useless, so you are also forcing kingambit not to tera, which is huge in managing that mon.
So yeah it is severely underrated
That’s what I made the minute Pecharunt dropped, built a Grassy terrain team with Ting Lu hazard stack and built a pretty decent team around the runt.
i miss seeing videos like this you’re the only one to do it like this and i love your content. you got me into gen 3 OU so thank you jimothy
i think the main thing thats holding back percharunt is how offensive the tier is so, each game is going to be fast and trying to get anything out of the confusion and toxic can be hard.
This isn't insane.

Pecharunt's issue is that it's a predictable, one-trick pony. Its ability only works if you poison the opponent. Which means you have to inflict poison/bad poison for it to be useful, which then takes away any other status you might want to inflict. And it has to be specifically from Pecharunt, so something like Toxic Spikes won't trigger the ability. Beyond that, it has 88 stats across the board (save Defense), so it's not exactly sweeper material.
I can't say it's bad so much as it's just the moment you see it, you know exactly what it's going to do. Bring in a Steel type.
The 8 thing is a theme because 8 in Japan represents good luck, so it's supposed to be ironic since Pecharunt is part of the concept of a monkey's paw, it can grant wishes but also turn those it grants the wishes of into generally bad people. The Loyal Three are really mean Pokémon because of it and even if he wasn't fully controlled, Kieran was influenced by Pecharunt as well causing some of his angst in the DLC
I think it's an OU-caliber Pokemon due to being a tanky physical wall that's insane at spreading toxic and can pivot out of bad matchups with Parting Shot.
...The issue is the current OU metagame has a LOT of things that threaten it that are on the majority of teams like Ghold and Kingambit. It's just got a poor case of bad matchups against the top OU threats. I imagine it'll end up in UU. Some people seem to think it's utter garbage that'll fall to the bottom tiers but I find that very doubtful.
If current OU has an easy time beating it then its not really a pn OU caliber Pokemon is it

The worst part is: that was the first mythical that had a presentation that wasn't just "here, free mythical" in years. The fact that a hyped mythical was the weakest one we got is just sad.
"Access to parting shot at least gives you something to click on incoming kingambit"
That one guy who runs defiant kingambit: nuh uh
Strikes me as a UUBL pokemon because every lower tier would prob just see this and go "HELL no"
The newest UUBL threat he gon be crazy in Limbo
I think it would be a strech if it was classified on NU, imagine UUBL
I really like Pecharunt, it's ability reflects its powers from the story and pokedex and its not too broken
Hex, chain, fighting tera and recover works
Bro’s getting the Zarude treatment
wonder if they would consider creating a mythical/legendary that has an ability to dump stats into one stat based on the circumstances, that or something akin to shedninja
Even if you could Parting Shot the Kingambit, there's always a chance it could be Defiant.
not in ou
Hey, he got them fake Supreme Overlord!
If they gave it t spikes and will-o-wisp it could had been SO much better
Pecharunt's toxicity only makes way for the arrival of its future form, Iron Gamer with its signature move Toxic Gamer Moment which not only poisons and confuses, but inflicts the infatuated status because we all know the most attractive thing is being yelled at in a voice chat. Dark times lie ahead.
toxic gamer moment gets buffed the next gen so instead of infatuating it also burns
honestly when it gets going its really hard to get off the field with the right tera type, even if its not top tier I see it being a menace in like UU where steel types arent extremely rampant
I'm far from high ladder, but in OU lately I've been running a terra steel Azumarill with substitute and belly drum, holding a figy berry. It's so easy to just just click terra when it comes out because the first thing it's gonna try to do is malignant chain. You can use that turn to get a free substitute. And then, with nothing to hit you, it's forced to switch out, so free belly drum, activating the figy berry, bringing you back up to just above half health, allowing you to belly drum a second time if need be, or just survive a bit longer. As long as you've taken out any checks first, like Dondozo, you can basically just wipe the entire team.
What's unfortunate is that Pecharunt probably isn't gonna stay OU, which means this strategy will have a lot less openings to abuse.
Poison is such a meta typing
its actually pretty good in Mix And Mega with latiasite, i got it to rank 1 on ladder earlier today. its a great and much needed regieleki counter and offers role compression for offense teams who want a tox immune booster. it runs bold nature with max hp and a mix of spa and spdef evs to pose a threat after a nasty plot and maximize its mixed bulk. definitely way better than anyone in the mnm community hoped for
Ghost/poison can be great defensively and it can be good but those stats aren't that good though that ability is kind of crazy
Can the ‘runt learn Toxic Spikes? If he uses them do switches get poisoned and confused?
Asking the important questions!!!
It can't learn Toxic Spikes, according to Bulbapedia. Maybe it's intentional so that it's not insanely annoying to fight against.

@@gabrielalves303 until H.Samarott with its Water and Dark coverage shows up

Was hoping its ability would be more interesting, like poison heal but if the opponent is poisoned
(Potentially) Hot take: Kingambit and Gholdengo should both be banned from OU, not for being overpowered, but for being over-centralizing. Almost every team has to have both a solid answer to them and have them yourself as a win condition, and even with good counters, they (especially Gambit) can often just decide to win anyway with hyperpowerful Sucker Punches and the such. Great Tusk is debatably in the same boat, but it tends to be a good but a bit less mandatory and without its two biggest targets in the picture, it’d probably drop to being a great but not dominating threat.
This thing is hilarious in doubles though thanks to poison gas and curse.
When talking about Pecharunt's Kingambit matchup, it's important to note that a Sucker Punch powered up by Supreme Overlord from Kingambit will only do about 88% to Pecharunt. Despite the type advantage, it doesn't OHKO. It's low base special attack is also pretty deceptive, it's just high enough to hit relevant damage thresholds. If you have tera, Pecharunt will on average beat most Kingambits with good play. That being said, it's definitely a rather difficult mon to use. But I think the potential is there.
2HKO isn’t much better, and if your best option is to sac something for Pecharunt to get very good damage on Kingambit the team is not an OU team or you have lost and you are playing out your loss.
Gholdengo saying I'm confused is comedic genius.
if it worked off any status, and used thunder wave then we would have a much more different problem
My biggest gripe with this thing is that it has 0 tools to deal with steels and its signature move has eight pp. that means on average you will poison four times IF the other team has no steels or poison types. Without poison it also has essentially no ability. They could release tgis thing in lc and pawniard would wall it so hard it wouldnt be used.
I see a lot of comments blaming Pecharunt’s performance on “power creep” in SV as though SM or SS would be kinder to Pecharunt with even more powerful pokemon like ash greninja, melmetal, magearna, ferrothorn, kartana, rapid strike urshifu, etc. I’m putting that term on a high shelf until pokemon fans understand what it means.
They gave what could’ve been the meta game counter to spam spread moves, which are mostly all special attacks except earthquake, high Defense instead of high Special Defense. It should’ve been either the defenses switched or a bit higher base special defense
I love this outro version too
Ain’t no way iron Mugulis is in RU, how is Bisharp and Chesnaught meant to tank a 180 base spatk thunder bolt?
It works great in Doubles, as it can use Poison Gas, poisoning both enemies and confuse them.
this sig move is gonna go hard in balanced hackmons tho
This is a great example of how an ability warps playability - this Mon has all the tools it could ever want, and it isn't good enough simply because it doesn't have regenerator.
I feel that it should have either been a poison and dark type, or should have at least learned body press or, the move that a lot of ghost types have, will o wisp. Its clear that this mon was meant to spread status by switching into physical attackers, but the physical attackers it is supposed to "check" aren't really hampered by it. Most physical attackers run EQ just bcuz of coverage, so instead of letting it die to EQ, it should be able to threaten physical attackers. Unfortunately its role isnt so good, so it will end up in RU most likely.
Hey, at least Flamigo has a good check down there
Whats that lovely song at the end Mr. Cool?
pecharunt is an all new mythical Pokemon that is finally available to use in gen 9.
I love this thing. It may not be the best but I’m determined to use it because it looks so dang fun. My two favorite Types, hilarious Ability, and funny chain-shaped Stats. 8’s my favorite number!
It is interesting, though. Most poison types punish the opponent for switching with toxic spikes. Pecharunt punishes the opponent for staying in with confusion.
The way i decided to run Pecharunt is kinda gimmicky but fun. I made it a speedy defensive build that has its signature move Malignant Chain, Parting Shot, Curse and Recover. Because i figured, if I cant poison steel or poison types, ill just curse them instead. Then I run it with the tera dark type in order to avoid psychic types ruining my day and to potentially use the none ghost type version of curse for more defense and stalling capability.
I ran Pecharunt in ForteMons, with its Item being Malignant Chain, and it uses Acid Spray, Hex, Protect, and Recover. It’s utterly annoying to go up against, so much so that I started calling Pecharunt the Malignant Pain.
The way I see it, at least this pokemon had a whole in game story dedicated to it (unlike essentially any of the other mythics of recent) and that makes it alright in my eyes :)
how i would make it better: of the bat, reduce its attack stat since it knows abysmal physical moves. making its stats: 98 hp, 28 atk, 160 def, 108 sp atk, 108 spdef, 98 speed. give it access to body press, make it able to hit steel types with poison moves as neutral or not very effective damage and able to poison steel types.
Hey Jim, can we get a video about Archaludon? Since its release I've seen literally nothing about it, which is really weird
88 speed is considered slow now
anything below 100 base is average at best, been this way since gen 3
I wonder if it'd be better if its ability was changed to something more stally?
Like making it gain hp equal to the opponent's toxic loss at end of turn. Cool ed too, did something happen to the old one?
Old song was a cover with vocals from a rapper named Viper and recently he's appeared on news for some rather unseemly reasons so keeping the old song would be in poor taste. Luckily this new song is nice!
Mean look / curse / recover / chain almost seems designed for this guy
Either give him Focus Blast or have Malignant Chain have a built-in Corrosion effect and he'll probably work.

Iron Mugulis is the greatest evil the world has ever faced.
Iron Mugulis has been staying in my kitchen cupboard lately. I'm going to have a word with him about trapping Jimothy in Sydney this is so not ok
I can see Pecharunt being an absolute menace in Doubles. Run a solid Fighting type or Ground type (or both!) and suddenly Pech's counters really don't want to switch in.
In lower tiers, it would have to deal with Eviolite Bisharp. Same idea as Kingambit
This guy could be particularly mean as a way to trap Pokemon that can’t hit it hard. It can use Mean Look to trap, poison with Malignant Chain or Toxic, recover off chip damage with Recover, and it can even add a flinch chance with Astonish if it wants to add another layer of Paraflinch antics. It’s clearly not an OU threat, but I could see this thing tearing through a lower tier.
I feel like Pecharunt is one of the most situational pokemon in the new DLC.
It thrives against stall, who has no way of chipping away at it with toxic (and gets toxic/confused to hell from malignant chain) and their only answer is probably blissey, who has to switch out for natural cure anyways.
However, it also has good matchups into rillaboom and valiant, two staples on more balance/defensive teams. (I can't believe I'm saying that valiant is defensive now this meta is messed up)
But against general offense and most hazard-stack, it struggles to break through gholdengo, great tusk, and darkrai, who I've been seeing a lot. Especially kingambit, who is basically the definition of a hard counter.
Extremely offensive teams can beat it with iron boulder, roaring moon, raging bolt, and volcarona - although they might get poisoned, it usually trades for pecharunt which is pretty good.
tl;dr pecharunt is sometimes fantastic but most of the time does nothing when kingambit ghold and tusk are on like every team
He is a good partner of bulky zapdos with static
I'm not sure how many people realized this, but Pecharunt has base 88 in every stat to keep in line with the other mythicals.
They all have base 100s across the board, sp if you take 12 away from 5 of those stats you leave those stats with 88, but you have 60 stats to play with which they gave to its defense. Ergo, base 88 in ever stat and base 160 defense.
Could've just said 600 BST
@@wumpoooo Well, but it's not just 600 BST. All the psuedos also have 600 BST. What sets the mythicals apart is that specific uniform base 100 across the board. And even though Pecharunt has a bit more variance, it keeps the spirit of the other mythicals by keeping all of its other stats uniform at base 88.
Confusion could’ve been changed to just make attacks deal 30% recoil damage and it could’ve been fun but nooooo
So sad it does not learn taunt. It could be a crazy stall breaker
Wait a minute...why would Iron Mugulis leave his new peaceful life to commit a crime against you that only _benefits_ you? The funniest part is that if someone hates it enought they could run defiant Kingambit to ruin Parting Shot too
