Just for the record, a wah isn't a tone control, it's a moveable band pass filter. Tone controls boost or cut specific frequencies, the wah is simultaneously boosting frequencies based upon the position of the treadle and filtering out frequencies above and below.
Anthony Ubriaco A wah is a sweep filter. The pedal controls the sweep from either extremes of the frequency curve. A standard wah has a fixed Q. Q is the "steepness" and amplitude of the curve. The tighter the Q, the more quack it will have. Conversely the broader the Q, the smoother the effect to the point of being flat or unaltered. Some higher end wahs have an adjustable Q. The actual movement of the pedal opened and closed does not affect Q.
I love those funky rythms with the wah but more often than not, I use it free form to accent specific notes of a solo to make them stand out and to add aggressive emotion to my solo. It's also great for adding flair to fast, repeating legato licks ala Zakk Wylde.
I thought the same thing. Guess what he probably means is feel free to put it where ever it suits your ear, but it absolutely changes the effect. Its always the first pedal in my chain.
@@Sam-qc6sz Pre-distortion (which is traditionally how its done) results in a more gritty/rough change in tone, as the pedal's being moved. Moving the pedal when it's post-distortion (which is how I naively preferred it when I was a young teenager, first learning to play) results in a smoother change in tone.
Shane, thank you very much for this lesson. I've never gotten around to mastering the wah and it's sat in the box for the past 6 years LOL. I'm going to break it out and give it a whirl thanks to your demo and advice. Cheers Mate!!!

Have you used Morley the old ones Big Crome things ? I have one w/Fuzz / vol /Wha. I love the tone but an input jack came lose & I lost the nut & I can't find one to fit it…? Anyone know that size let me know. I have the Vai one but thats no where near as good as the Big Crome Morleys. I get messed up w/CryBaby/ Vox type wha's I hit the switch in the moment turn the wha on & off on a loud stage thats hard to tell where you at. Dunlop made one that didn't have a toe switch hard to find, I use a Boss wha that didn't have the toe switch but it sounded terrible.
most peeps thought the morley "light" wahs sounded like crap..very buzzy. I had a couple in the early days and ditched them...great concept...the sound was just poor.
ACTUALLY MORLEY AND THE DUNLOP CRY BABY(IN WHICH HE IS PLAYING) ARE 2 DIFFERANT BRANDS THAT MAKE AN WAH PETAL. FOR EXAMPLE : SORT OF LIKE FENDER GUITARS AND GIBSON GUITARS. BOTH COMPANIES MAKE GUITARS BUT THEY ARE TWO DIFFERANT BRANDS.
First pedal I bought was a VOX v847 wah (along with a Fuzz Face, yeah I'm a Hendrix fan). I try not to use it too much but it's a must have on my pedal board. I couldn't imagine a pedal board without one now. It does take a bit of getting used to but when you do it's amazingly versatile. Did you know Gilmour used one to get the seagull/whale noises on Echoes? You have to plug the inputs and outputs the wrong way around and then play with the guitar tone knob. I bet he was stoned in the studio the day he accidentally discovered that one, huh. Cool vid and good advice. Cheers.
that would be about right, im 85% sure the wah he had during that period was a vox, but the original types of vox wahs, like the v847 (without buffers). Thats why you cant get as close with gcb95s and the v847a
Great lesson. The mysteries of the Wah have been revealed! Now we just have to get Shane a shoe sponsorship deal. :) The man has his priorities correct!
I'm toe down almost level with the ground. I ended up with this one also the classic with the Faisal it's a really good wah . There may be better ones but this works fine I really enjoyed the video.
Hi , I'm from Canada and just thought I'd say, your channel is great. Keep the videos coming. I think these videos ate very helpful. You can always learn something from everyone. Thanks great video
It's my understanding, based on frequency visualizers, Wah pedals actually shift the mid-range of the guitar up and down while creating a sharp cut in the mid tones.
Nice vid. One correction; you don't think about where the snare goes b/c the snare usu. goes on 2 and 4, whereas the wah heel-toe rocking motion is on EVERY beat - every quarter note. Course, you COULD drop the toe only on 2 and 4, which would give you an interesting "half time" feel.
minutes ago edited the way I see it is that we guitar players are, without fail, utterly awesome. So the “wah face” was bestowed upon us all to give us humility🤔 You gotta embrace DA FACE!😎
My Crybaby has two different wha effects depending on the position of your distortion pedal, if you put your distortion before the wha you get more of a distortion effect, if you put it after it it gives more of a wha wha sound. It’s an awesome Crybaby I’ve had it for years!!
I put an Arlo Cocked Wah mod (similar to that half open wah pedal) on the bridge pickup of one guitar for distortion tones - 'cuts through the mix' as they say.
Im the same way with my right foot as a lefty. It just feels weird to use my left foot. Plus my guitar is resting on my left leg so the added weight makes it a little harder to smoothly use the pedal
Plug it in backward for the Floyd "Echoes" seagull sounds. There's a bit more to it than that (you need controllable feedback, Bjorn at Gilmourish has a tutorial) but that is the basic "trick" to get you started.
The regular GCB Wah comes with a red Fasel also, the classic has a different sound and true bypass but not because of the Fasel. Replace the red with a yellow and check that out.
a wah pedal is actually also a mid range filter, play around with the lower midrange of an eq pedal, you'll notice one of those frequencies sounds like a wah pedal that's cocked (heel down)
I find that most wah pedals boost the signal a little bit in the toe down position. Along with too much highs that even hurt the ear. I pay mostly clean but I use the amp at the verge of break up, so the wah makes the amp distort a tiny bit. Know of any wahs that don't do this? Also interested in wahs with more of a mid range sweep, I really don't like when they go piercing high!
Putting the wah at the end of the chain is a pretty drastic difference compared to the start... some pedals mess with the wah effect in a big way. There's definitely a difference!
Thanks Shane a fantastic to the point lesson! QUESTION ; For middle position of pedal you said turn up gain. Do you mean gain as in guitar volume knob ? As I’m hardly going to walk over to my head and turn the gain up, (on stage) or is that what you are saying to do ? Cheers and thanks Shane. 🤟 Regards Dave
Finding a fellow lefty player? Kinda rare. Finding a fellow lefty player that plays an identical style guitar, colours and all? Pretty damn rare! Good video ;)
Yes you basically can do that. Obviously you’re gonna need your guitar, amp and your wah pedal, you need 2 cables. On a wah pedal there’s two sides to plug Into (one side feeds to go into your amp and the other into your guitar) plug everything in (wah to amp, wah to guitar with the correlated plug in) it’s very simple once you actually have it trust me
Jimi Hendrix rarely played the wah rhythmically on the beat ("Papa Was a Rolling Stone" funk style). Jimi used it on more on individual notes.. like a trumpeter uses a mute. He made the notes sound like someone talking. Listen to "Rainy Day, Dream Away" or "Voodoo Child". It takes a lot of foot/hand coordination to use the wah the way he did. The closest Jimi comes to playing it straight up rhythmically would probably be "Up From the Skies" from Axis.
Thanks for one of the most straightforward, comprehensive videos I've seen regarding wah pedals.
Thanks mate! :-)
Just for the record, a wah isn't a tone control, it's a moveable band pass filter. Tone controls boost or cut specific frequencies, the wah is simultaneously boosting frequencies based upon the position of the treadle and filtering out frequencies above and below.
I said it like that to keep it simple. Thanks mate. :-)
intheblues Sorry, it's a curse. Ha ha
Zarazel 741 I'll have to agree to disagree with you there.
Anthony Ubriaco A wah is a sweep filter. The pedal controls the sweep from either extremes of the frequency curve. A standard wah has a fixed Q. Q is the "steepness" and amplitude of the curve. Re: "You can have it at the end of your chain, or at the start...it really doesn't matter." (@0:43 - 0:50)
Umm... It matters quite a bit.
I thought the same thing. Guess what he probably means is feel free to put it where ever it suits your ear, but it absolutely changes the effect. Its always the first pedal in my chain.
Meaning - feel free where to put wherever works for you.
What would be the difference?

the gilmour trick doesn't work with all wah pedals though.
yeah, it works probably best with the v847, not the buffered one
