Yep, pretty much luck into the perfect pedal & amp settings at a certain point. This attempts to eliminate that accidental stroke of genius.
@lost souls Some folks are knob & number dialers though and a closeup of the dial settings is the lazy way to instant tone.

dadude7 SRV also used to use slightly hot 9V batteries to OD and thicken the TS-9's output...FYI.

I also appreciate this channel, and the info what we can get from these channels, but I would never change those times when I had to learn from myself the things, instead of just getting everything in one sec.
Unfortunately, the result of getting information instantly is that, most of the people just can't appreciate the values of the things they can reach on internet.
@@nandorpetrik7467 I agree, and particularly noticeable is how old-timers like us used to work out the chords by ear. That way, you can't help but learn scales and chords, even if you're not sure why they are right/wrong. :) If the internet had existed when I started learning, I'm sure I could have learnt rock much faster, but my musical experience would be much more limited.

I love using my Tubescreamer as a clean boost for crushing metal tones! Really tightens up the low end and produces a satisfying chug in my Marshall amp. Turns out it works much in the same way for blues tones! Good stuff, Pete!

His demonstration of the difference between that point where the distorted signal sits separate (and essentially uninspired) from the clean signal of the amp, versus when the distortion actually mixes in with the amps natural breakup to create a finished sound, was absolutely brilliant.

Your one of the best Pete. Even your "how not to" sounded pretty damn good to us average twangers. You covered this subject well, and your choice of gear is dope. Some of your "bad" sounds are for rock/blues/metal but would work really well for other genres, like rockabilly, indie/surf or even some country. One thing you've really upped your game in is the video production. Very well made.

OH MY GOD. It just clicked for me. I knew that a tube screamer sounded best pushing the front of an amp. I knew that it let some of the clean signal through (provided its own, fixed, "clean mix" setting). BUT I never put the pieces together that the clean signal coming through the pedal will sound more natural if it's hitting a slightly dirty amp. Thanks for that nugget, Pete!

Hi Pete - you are one of my favorite players I’ve discovered on UA-cam. Whoever said you make all drive pedals sound the same needs to stick with their old Line 6 first generation INSANE settings of solid state 80’s fingernails on a chalkboard sound out of their B.C Rich Ironbird (actually a really cool guitar, nothing but love for B.C.). Keep it up, I love your style both as a human being and an exceptionally talented & tasty player! You have some of the best tones I’ve heard . . . particularly out of those Suhr amps . . . man I need to get me one of those . . . keep on rockin’ amigo and stay safe!! 🤟🏾🎸💕

Using a DOD FX50B got its own sound but built to compete with TS9 and DS1
Don't worry Pete, When they say you make everything sound the same it's just because you have a great touch that's makes everything sound really good and it all sounds like you.
very interesting... I do the same thing with a soulfood, low drive, high vol, and the amp gain mid but also use a compression for even more boost and sustain.
Cracking explanation, Pete - straight to the point. It's just made me re-think the way I set my amp and pedals up.
There are too many guitarists out there that need this kind of information. Thank you! It took me years to figure out that 100% drive from a pedal or from an amp on its own didn't cut it. The blend of both pedal and amp around 50% drive was the key for a professional tone. Not to mention that you also minimize hum noise with this method.
When I was much younger and in my first band , my friend and I had carlsboro transistor amps for his lead tone he had an mxr distortion plus and I had a boss SD 1 his tone always cut through the mix no problem, but my boss just wimped out and hid behind the amp
Interestingly, I came back to listen to this (again) and agree with some others that the first tone with the clean mixed in is EXACTLY what I want out of a TS. The other tones are fine, but that mix of clean and drive stays really articulate in a mix and reads as a heavy clean. To each his own!

I learned a few things! Another great day in my life! By the way, who are the 495 knuckleheads who gave this video a 'thumbs down?' Wow. You don't have to agree with Mr. Thorn, but he certainly provides useful information that is, at minimum, worthy of investigation. I know my TS9 sounds so much better. (I'd like to say 'sounds great,' but I don't play that well! ;-) )

Did you know, different batteries have a different tone?!?? You should search it here! "I'll take things I didn't know for 1000" is how it was for me!
Hey Mr Thorn - I believe there are pics showing SRV using 2 TS9 in series with each other at one point in his career. One set at a true overdrive dirty tone and then one set as a clean boost with no breakup.
The Boss Blues Driver is very amp-like. Running a TS9 into a BD-2 is a heavenly tone. I used to have a TS9DX, and the regular 'TS9' setting was my favorite. This video shows how awesome it is to blend pedal Od w/ amp Dist.
Pete has awesome insight and just damn good ears to differentiate the tone coming from this pedal + amp combo. Great stuff!! Thanks, Pete!! I've subscribed.

Hey thanks for this man! I also like to get the amp distortion up to about 3 o clock and blend in the tube screamer with the distortion at 9 o clock or less... Really great fat crunch sound! I'll try it 2moro with the amp distortion down more with the pedal volume up etc like you mention... Should be a great acdc tone I imagine 😁
I just watched another video where you nail the Brian May We Will Rock You ... with a nice casual groove... and in this you do SRV very naturally. You are loved.

Well said Pete! I started playing back in mid 80s. I was taught to crank your(hot)amp, use overdrive and control your gain with the volume knob on your guitar. Heck I'm still using a preamp 250!

Exactly how I feel about the ts9, always found the ts9 sounded way better with a amp with drive or dirt. I think we all make amps or pedals sound like our selfs. I think I've spent more time tone searching (40 yrs) than learning to play guitar :-)

Pete, your playing is so versatile that one should listen to more than just a couple of your songs to get an idea of your "sound/style " so to speak. You definitely do have a "signature " sound though. That being said, I wonder if the person saying "you make all overdrive pedals sound the same " was actually just recognizing your sound. I completely disagree with that statement by the way.

Honestly, it sounds good even when it sounds "crappy." It shines with a warm tube amp, but it's definitely useable in lots of settings I think.
You're right... I've got an american Strato (year 2004) and it's a good guitar but still really different from this one. Legend.
I was in a band with someone who had a 64 Strat. It blew my modified '73 out of the ballpark.

Thanks for this video, Pete. I’ve loathed Tubescreamer pedals for 25 years. I just felt it was flat sounding, like that half clean half distorted sound you mentioned. But this has showed me how great they can be. When I can’t use it with my cranked Mesa Boogie I use the TS into a Blues Driver and it does that great blues tone.
Dude I moved, so my studio is gone. I am in a "Bedroom Sound Limited" situation. I can't turn up an amp to the edge of breakup. Therefore, can you do a video on how to adapt to such situations with OD medals, from TSP thru EVH 5015 Pedals ? I'LL bet you can generalise the information so as to teach us how to get the tone we want, cuz it ain't easy. I switch pedals, but still .... Thanks for all your work.

I play predominantly blues , 90% SRV material . Live playing as well as home practice . I'm using a screamer to punch the front of the amp and another screamer to boost the 1st which sounds incredible . Question is , which would be a better fit ? especially since I also use pedals . Thank you in advance for your time buddy and can't wait to learn more from you .

Great video and GREAT playing! I really like the fulltone ocd for this job, too (cranked volume, no drive). It doesn't attenuate the low end, which I actually prefer.

I have to say that I actually like that first "bad" sound; where the slight overdrive and clean can be hears together and separate. It's limited in its usefulness, but if you have a nice punky riff that starts off brash but not too heavy it really works, but only if then it's contrasted by a much fuller and heavier overdrive sound. As I said, it's limited in its application, but I think it's a great sound when used in this way. Imho. I guess it would sound pretty terrible and weak for a full song, which is what you're no doubt getting at, but I felt I wanted to defend it a little bit.
Otherwise, thank you very much for this. I will be utilizing your advice immediately. It's great getting tips from somebody with your knowledge and experience.
