Well, we had a brush with fame when we saw you two in Lucca this morning on our way back from the market! I didn’t want to interrupt your Saturday but wish we’d said hello and thanked you for all the wonderful info. We are here for a week in large thanks to you two and your channel. Your videos are such a help-we’ve even used Enzo’s excellent video on pasta buying! Gratzie mille!

A lot going on in Lucca!!
Lucca seems to be event after event, there is never a dull moment in this city. It is nice to escape to the quiet of our hill.
Thank you again for sharing a small snippet of everyday life. It was great to see some of the pomp of Lucca as well as a retirement party! I will need to keep an eye out for the movie.
We are all very curious to find out the exact storyline of the movie, will it be positive or negative for the city?
Gorgeous blossoms. My roses are starting to bloom. We have had 88 degree Farenheit weather today....now it will cool about 20 degrees for the weekend and more rain. Glad our Southern California influence has come to visit.
Wisteria is now fully out so must take a photo. We haven't reached 88 degrees Fahrenheit but there is continuous fluctuation in the temperature. Today is perfect and our roses will be out in a few weeks.

Thank you for the comment. We did try to be extras but weren't chosen. The filming is all of the city and it will be interesting to see the movie . I believe there will be many drone shots as well.
Very sad that the Village shop ha snow closed. Will be sadly missed especially with the Tourists.
It is indeed very sad that the village shop has closed. We hope it will find new owners soon. In the meantime we are lucky to have a market veg stall once a week and the main village is only ten minutes away.
Enjoyed your presentation. Mentioning the plot of the Dustin Hoffman movie being filmed there, it might be a good segue into a video exploring the Cimitero inglese outside of Bagni di Lucca (near you folks). I visited the location last June, there are some very interesting headstones there. Plus a headstone of a former "first lady" (probably the only one known to be buried outside the United States). Her story in itself is quite unusual, controversial, to say the least.
I think you are referring to Rose Cleveland. I have written a blog post about her and her love affair. Indeed we will should tell this rather beautiful story .
Excellent info regarding the coming film and the potential reopening of da Simo. Let’s hope for success. Curious about the restaurant where you were dining…and the Rose Cleveland story. Continued success.
We hear so many versions of the exact storyline, it will be interesting to see the film when it is released. We sincerely hope Di Simo will return to life as a real bar. We were in the bar Santa Zita in Piazza San Frediano in Lucca.
La Mura is certainly springing back into life. I have buds starting on my fruit trees but certainly no blossoms yet. Lovely Viviana has now retired. Has the shop been bought over? And what about the Little White Horse? Is the pizzeria still running? We were just looking at photos of us walking back very late one night from the restaurant rather "merry" following a great meal and a few bottles of vino followed by the customary limoncello shots! Happy memories. Best wishes to you both. 💜
Viviana has indeed retired and as sad as we all are, Vivi certainly deserves some time for herself. We will miss her, Alessandro and Claudio but we still have the pizzeria and the summer club will soon be open and they are planning more activities. I hope we will also have some village suppers. For the moment no one has taken the shop or restaurant but we hope they will as there has been some interest. For now we have a market veg stall that comes up once a week and of course Bagni is just 10 minutes down the hill. Let us hope the young generation will open new activities.
Indeed you seem very busy with so much coming back to life in the countryside and the city! I'd like to add my voice to those wishing for a complete reopening of cafe Di Simo. It looks so empty now compared with its abundance of pastries and colorful caramelle on display in years past. It was my habitual stop each morning for un caffe' before doing research at the Archivio di Stato. Beautiful ambiance of wood, marble, glass and mirrors . . . an aesthetic gem and cultural locale associated with Puccini and others that deserves a full "rebirth".
Was your husband researching his family's history? We didn't really film very much inside Di Simo, it looked rather sad. All the tables were robed off. I really hope those beautiful rooms can come back to life with the chatter of the Lucchese rising over the live music. Let us hope these events will lead to the return of the clinking glasses and coffee cups.
@@PiazzaTalkLucca Actually I did research in the ASL on aspects of Lucchese history and also on the Garfagnana. I was a university prof of Italian History here in the USA before retiring, so lots of research trips to Italy over the years. Di Simo was special gathering place for the Lucchesi . . . may those clinking glasses and conversations resume.
How interesting. I really want to do a vlog on the historical women in Lucca. What was your research about? and did you visit la Biblioteca Statale and the Biblioteca Diocesana?
Women . . . Yes a little bit. On Lucrezia Buonvisi but she is already well known via Salvatore Bongi's book and other more recent scholarship. Wrote an article on the Ptotettori delle mretrici based on Lucca' law circa 1539 and actual court testimony by prostitutes . . . But I don't think that would be a good topic for a blog! At the diocesan archives I spent little time but found in the bishop's visit reports to the countryside evidence of organizations to help poor women but documentation was very slim, only the name of a woman here or there. Finally in the Bibliotheca Statale there is an interesting MS account by a 16 century nun (from Camaiore, I believe) recounting her mystical experience. Certainly Lucca itself for holy women has Santa Zita and Santa Gemma. Would a look at them and the churches associated with them interest your other followers? Hope this response helps in some way. . . . I very much enjoy the variety of subjects explored on Piazza Lucca
Interestingly you mentioned Santa Zita and Santa Gemma as this week Lucca got a new saint. Elena Guerra was canonised on 13th April by Pope Francis and will be proclaimed a Saint soon. As a point of interest, she was Santa Gemma's teacher.
Hi, Very nice to see your vidéo. Love the way you interac with peuples. Rare youtubeur are doing that. We will move to Italy next year and my concern was how to integrate the communaute. I love peuple and does not want to be isolate in my Little tour d ivoire. To many often people bring America style to Italy but I want the opposite. Thank you for your comment, Enzo is Italian so I guess maybe that made things easier but I think the trick is speaking the language and being a good listener. Italians are very friendly, kind and patient and love to talk. The elder ladies in the village were very patient with me when I arrived and taught me a great deal. Our friend is called Jonell Galloway and has a facebook page called the Rambling Epicure. also a website.
I am still looking forward to meeting you both…have been "in town" since March 2 but have been quite ill all this while. My husband and I were hoping to run into you in Benabbio. We did want to try that quaint restaurant you featured on Piazza Santa Maria (Locanda White Horse?) but sadly, it appears they are gone. Hopefully, we will run into you in Lucca. What restaurant were you dining at with your friends from the US?
I am so sorry that you have been unwell. We have been very busy at the farmhouse so we haven't been into the village. Sadly the restaurant in Piazza Santa Maria is closed at the moment as Claudio and Alessandro have retired. There is still a pizzeria in the top part of the village. Please do say Ciao if you see us around in either Lucca or the Bagni area. I hope you are now fully recovered and you can now enjoy the holiday.
