    I listened and watched all of that without even considering the time ... most fascinating and I learnt some things I was not aware of too. I think Guido might be the fellow I used to get my wine from in Bagni (he was younger then) - on the right side of the road coming up from and not far beyond Il Circolo. The last shot of the shop seemed to confirm it. He had a few non-Italian wines then which intrigued me at the time and his knowledge and generally welcoming manner kept me as a customer for many years.
    All in all a most useful video wherever one might reside. Thank you.

      Thank you. We're all getting older sadly. Guido also acts as a social centre for the locals. He spends a lot of time to widen his knowledge. He's truly passionate.

      We learnt so much Guido as well. He is a friend and has an olive grove below ours. He is a mine of information and his shop is full of amazing wines and oils.

    Great video! We are lucky enough to have a Frantoio just up the road from us - we don't have our own olives unfortunately but we buy straight from the owners.

      It is good to know your area had a crop this year. The whole of our hill is lamenting the lack of olives. There has also been a lot of fly around I believe.

    It was interesting to find out more about olive oil. Can you buy his oil in any outlets in Lucca?

      Thank you. This year sadly we have no olives in our area. I don't think Guido sells the olive oil he produces from his olive grove as it is produced in family quantities like ours. We find that good olive oil can be found at Il Desco, the food fair in Lucca happening in the next weeks over the weekends. We once bought very good oil from an estate in Massarosa, near the sea, to taste the difference and it was worth it. You can also contact a frantoio like the one in Valdottavo or Massarosa and ask if they sell oil.

      Grazie tante for that video! My husband and I are in Lucca for the next 4 weeks and hope to find some good olive oil at the outdoor food markets. Are the food markets on Wednesday and Saturdays in Lucca? If they are, could you tell me where they are held?

      Thanks for the info. Wished we could go to the food fair over the next few weekends but we're back in England now probably until early next year. We'll have to keep trying different oils we're trying Villa Santo Stefano at the moment and it is good

      @farrell5607 We have a three weekly farmers market in Lucca:
      Mercato Contadino in Foro Boario (the old cattle market) on Saturday morning
      Then two small ones in:
      Piazzale Verdi (near the tourist office) Thursday morning
      Piazza San Francesco - Mercato Bio Wednesday afternoon
      Also Il Desco in the Real Colleggio (back of San Frediano Church)
      2nd /3rd December from 10 am to 8 pm
      8th/9th/10th December from 10 am to 8 pm
      There you will find many estates selling their new oil.
      I'm sure there are also other little markets around but I don't have the details

    Would bottles of EVOO require a pressing date and a best before date in Italy?

      Italian law (and European I expect) doesn't require anymore a pressing date and an expiring date but generally they put a best before date of 18 months.

      @PiazzaTalkLucca Thanks. We do put the pressing date on ours. It's good to watch harvesting in Italy and see we do follow pretty much the same process. We have mainly frantoio, leccio del corno, maurino, and pendolino varieties in our grove in NZ. We had a poor harvest last season after very wet weather over many months!

      In fact Guido during our conversation mentioned that Leccio del Corno is more resistant to cold. We had to do massive editing as the conversation lasted hours. We weren't aware that New Zealand produced Olive oil. I imagine places like New Zealand, Australia and America use the newest methods. Now there are hardly any frantoio using traditional methods in Italy. Sad but modern methods create a better product.
