Dryer Heats Up But Will Not Spin | How to Fix Dryer

  • I hope this helps any of you with the same problem with your whirlpool or kenmore or just about any other dryer! It took a lot of research to figure out what was the issue. I even took the front apart to check on the belt, and it would be easy to assume the motor was blown. But once I figured out what it was, I realized it was and easy fix! So I decided to make this video to show you how to fix your own dryer by putting in a new thermal fuse and heating element. You will need to look for the part numbers to your dryer. They should be very easy to find. The thermal fuse had the number printed right on it. Good luck and be safe!

Just fixed my dryer for $19.18.. Store guy insisted because he was the professional, that it was the belt. I stuck to the fuse and now have a working dryer. You saved me a bunch of money. Thank You.

Always check the fuse first. That is the likely culprit and a lot easier, cheaper, and a quick fix!

my dryer had me chasing my tail for about a week. This video was a huge help because he talked about the black on the back of the element not being a good sign. This made me realize that the "new element" that i installed was faulty and blew the therm fuse once again. i sent back the faulty element and installed everything one more time and the dryer works like new. good stuff, sir. thanks for the helpful video.

I just watched a bunch of videos to search why my Maytag dryer won’t turn. All of them suggested to check the fuse. You are the only one that showed how to find why it was blown. Sure enough, it was the heating element! Thank you!

Thank you!!! fixed my dryer today because of this video. Replaced the heating element (fuses came with the element I just didn't want to replace them at the time) a few weeks ago and then it stopped spinning but was heating. This fuse was the issue. Replaced it and it works again. Replaced all the fuses actually.

Huge save! My exact issue fixed easily on the cheap! One minor suggestion- no need to have to bend the tab to remove and replace the thermostat on the side of the heating element. Remove the wires as shown, then remove heating element box. Next pop off the only connection on the thermostat and it will be easy to remove and replace without bending.
Thank you for the video! Saved a ton of money

👍. I changed the thermal fuse yesterday and today it was blown again. I was iffy about buying the coil because I tested it and it was still good but I could see a spot where it touched the case so I figured that blew the fuse. Even the guy at the parts shop said if the coil tested good then it’s not the problem. He was wrong. Put the new coil in and everything good now. Thanks for the video because I would have never thought it to be the coil because it was still getting hot. I will update if it craps out again

I searched everywhere and this video was AWESOME! This is the EXACT problem I was having with an electric dryer. My description would be Element gets hot with timer set to operate even when the dryer is not yet operating, when trying to start the dryer, it won't start there is no motor operation. I was thinking the centrifugal switch in the motor was sticking allowing the element to heat. (Note the door was removed and there was no door switch in the circuit and the element was still getting hot) Terrible safety feature! No wonder dryer malfunctions are a leading cause of house/apartment fires.

Thx Matt for the video. I spoke to a tech about this situation and was told there might be something sinister to consider from a safety standpoint. The tech told me the heating element should NOT be able to come on without the motor actually turning. There reportedly is a safety switch on the motor that should never allow the element to heat without the motor turning. This makes sense since having a hot element without air flow is a recipe for a home fire. He advised it was possible that when the element shorted it fused the contact points on the motor safety switch. Hence replacing the element will work but the motor safety switch is now non functional. I'm in the process of replacing the thermal fuse, the element, and the thermostat, AND most importantly removing any blockage from the dryer air outlet ducts. The tech told me replacing the motor safety switch might mean replacing the motor which is probably better fixed with a new dryer. Just an fyi to think about...

Thanks so much. Weird how you can not visibly see the fuse fault The appliance service / store guy looked at me like a moron when i brought fuse/element in when i said drum wouldn't spin. I was like this cool dood in the internet said it was often a fuse. He reluctantly tested the fuse and was perplexed it was bad. I got a fuse and reassembled the whole thing (i took the front end off too to check the belt. Everything is working now. With the heat still working w/ bad fuse really easy to just presume mechanical/motor problem. Thanks so much < $20 when my dumb azz would have spent more (bought new). Officially an old man/dad now.

Yo, thank you. I was doing a functional diagnosis & a visual diagnosis to see if my dryer was working normally based on time duration; in a short period of time, the element begins to overheat until the point where the dryer cuts off by the thermostat. I feel inside the drum for the heat usually about a minute, and I feel abnormal heat inside the drum as if it's overheating too soon. I did the continuity test and resistance test on the elements terminals (they work), but I didn't realize the condition of the heater element mattered the most since this is accurately the only video talking about the heater element condition. That's one of the reason why I should've replaced the heater element.
On the visual diagnosis, the coils in the element were burnt, and I should've found this video sooner before I brought the wrong devices; all of my dryers thermostats are functioning very well. I improved the airflow of the dryer by making the vent duct shorter in length to compensate the airflow. All I need is to wait on my new heater element. $22 is a deal I won't miss on.

I checked the vent since it was a extremely long vent hose and it was stopped up bad. I figure it got to hot and was shutting off, then when it cooled off it would come back on. Eventually thou it blowed the fuse link cause heat stops was coming on but no tub turning. Hi, Matt. I've never tried to repair an appliance, but thought I'd try since your video was so clear and easy to follow. The problem I've encountered is that the two wires seem to be cemented onto the fuse with some black substance. Is there anything I can do?

There's a reason all those brands have the same problems! Whirpool manufacturers Kenmore, Maytag, and Roper, and some other brands. Even with their flaws, Whirlpool still makes the best appliances.
