I lived in Kenya for 3 years I was 12years old when my family arrived in Kenya. When Kenyans heard us speak kinyarwanda some of them thought we were speaking Kiluyha . I went to school in Kenya and I had time to pick up a few words in different languages. Kiluyha words were some of of the easiest because of the similarities to our language. The most Iconic ones
Ingokho -inkoko-chicken
ingwe-ingwe-leopard
ebilibwa-ibilibwa-food
amatsi-amazi-water
here is a funny one amabeere (milk)in Kinyarwanda (amabere), which means breasts, amata is milk in Kinyarwanda. Amabere/ibere (singular) can also be used in the context of breast feeding.
That one of Amabere cracked me 😂😂. I did a video of body parts relationship words in Luhya and Nyarwanda and had to cut that part out because it made the video so Lengthy trying nto explain that Amabere is milk in Luhya and breasts in Kinyarwanda 😅.
Thank you for your input and especially the words you picked up staying in Kenya. Inkoko carries the day🎉
Kisii is close as well
Hi I speak Tswana in Botswana and it is so interesting . This is how we call the following;
Chicken - Koko
Leopard - Nkwe
Water - Metsi
Fire - Molelo
There are similarities too in Kuria, Engokoh chicken, amanche water, amabere Milk...
@@dedankimathi8306 You have mentioned Kuria and reminded me to check Kuria out. I see they're very close too
I'm Zambian 🇿🇲... what is interesting is that almost 95% of the words discussed are used in at least 3 of the languages that I can speak here in Zambia... thank you for sharing 👏
So interesting to know!
I am proudy to be Rwandan citizen. We thanks you our sister
What you are doing is very important to Africa. Showing interest in discussion of African languages in a positive manner is a pan-african spirit. Keep it going.
Thank you, Mnjaria. I am glad you joined in to spread the Pan-Africanism spirit further

I'm a Luhya in Kenya and listening to some Rwandese songs is quite easy to grasp the context. The wording is almost the same as well as the pronunciation. I love it that you came to make it even easier and you're so beautiful I'm speechless☺.Good job and content!
Hi Michael, I appreciate your kind words. Indeed, listening to Rwandese songs as a Luhya isn't that hard. Myself, I used to listen to the Ambassador adventist choir and noticed some words I would understand.
Our people here in Rwanda will be surprised because of this video!! I had friend from Kenya called MUTAVA and here we have MUTAVU. When I met her i started ask, why you're name is similar like us??
Then i started to know about Your good Country Kenya❤
I am from Rwanda 🇷🇼🇷🇼
Thank you for this video 🙏🙏
#Kinyarwanda: Umutavu means a calf in english
Mutoni is common also in Kenya.
Mutava is a popular Akamba name
Yeah true what you are saying is true 😅

I'm Kikuyu and I was able to pick out the details of entire phone conversations in Kinyarwanda when I was in Kigali. But it helps that I also know a lot of Bukusu dialect of the Luhya language. When I mix my knowlege of Gikuyu, Bukusu and Kiswahili languages (all Bantu, of course), then I can recognize many Kinyarwanda words.
I realized that Lugisu/Masaba of Uganda and Bukusu of Kenya are pretty much the same except that they interchange 'z' and 'ch', and the Bukusu often add 'ka' in front of words. Like the Lugisu/Lumasaaba will say _mezi_ for water, but Bukusu will say _kamechi_
Genius
Your pronunciation is awesome!
Wow Bantu languages have similar words and am always picking up on conversations. Awesome
Actually you are right. That's how Bantu languages work. Bantu was one language which was so rich in vocabulary and everyone seemed went out with some words. For example if you know Meru and Luhya you can understand Kisii language. Iam actually a Bukusu, I can understand Gisuu language of Bududa so well.
If she had comparison of kinyarwanda with Maragoli. Similarities would be many. Maragoli departs from all Luhya language
Kikuyu is like Rukiga one of the 4 Runyakitara languages in Western Uganda,

It's my pleasure! I had no idea you people take that much pride in your language. It's so admirable 😊. My Kenyan people would bother less if you made a video of our swahili.
This is a lesson learned.
By the way, how many other languages do you have in Rwanda 🇷🇼 apart from Kinyarwanda, English, Swahili, and French?
I would love to know
We have only that❤
We only all speak kinyarwanda 😊and the pride just comes from kinyarwanda is the chain that holds us together anywhere when you hear kinyarwanda you will directly know that this is my blood ❤.

You listed the words side by side very well.

Great work.
Wow for sure!
I understand Olugusi so well. It sounds to me like Lusaamia. So yeah, You are so right
Wow! Thanks a lot for a good job you've done next time, we wish you helped us to understand some of the songs from kenya, especially those ones from African languages.. once you helped us to understand those songs from Kenya and , keep your focus on the songs of dialects of kiswahili like those of kikuyu, jyalua and so on.
Really, most rwandans like to dance those traditional Kenyan songs of 1980s and 1990s of kenya, especially in dialects of kiswahili above, but they don't understand it. If you reached here in rwanda, you will listen such kinds of those songs in the rural bars. Savers so as to know what we are dancing please! I'm going to give you a few examples, but I am not sure if I will write how it is well spoken, don't get bored of it
1. Adelina yoo adelina landwa. Iyondo, iyondo.
2. Ndururu.
S I guess you get the kinds of songs that I am mentioning here, because I cannot know more of them as we listen without understanding. We need the meanings of such kinds of songs . We are waiting for you please! Are you going to say yes to my wish 14:24
The phenomenon of bantu languages is amazing all the way from Kenya down to South Africa. Kirundi and Kinyarwanda are almost the same. I speak Kirundi and I understand what my luyha house help says.
I lived in Lusaka, Zambia and would be amazed every step of the way to understand what they say whether on radio, at church or in the street including obscenities. Where do we come from if we speak the same language.
Start with the philosophical major concept of Ubuntu. It's the same in Burundi, Rwanda, South Africa etc. the feminine suffix "kazi" is the same in Burundi Rwanda Zambia and South Africa. A white woman umuzungukazi in Kirundi and Kinyarwanda is umupfundisikazi in South Africa. Not to speak of Luganda where I would understand everything at the Kampala Catholic cathedral.
Thanks for recognizing us 🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬
You have added a lot of insights herein. Indeed, Bantus are one and the same, just scattered across Africa.
That is incorrect about South African languaged. Mfundisikazi is a teacher or a pastor wife in South African Nguni languagesvdepenfing on the context. A white woman is umlumnkazi.
mimi ni munyarwanda i've been in both kenya and uganda for long, u got it right lugha zote ziko related kiluhya, kiganda, kinyarwanda, kinyankole and mostly kinyarwanda and kiswahili.... it's very easy for us to learn swahili😄 keep up the good work we need more of this contents

When I first heard the song "Vamuvamba" from Boniface Mganga I felt like they were singing in my language.I am from Burundi and the song was in Luhya I think.

Actually, I understand more Kirundi than Kinyarwanda. Though you people told me that they’re related.
Vamuvamba in luhya means " they crucified him"

Glad you enjoyed it!
Let's unite all Africans because we are one❤
Am a lukhya from Kenya, when Rwandese speak their language, I realised that it relates to ours..
Yes, there is some relationship
Wow, I never knew of the similarities between Kinyarwanda and Kiluhya. Your pronunciation is spot on, I can say that your pronunciation of the word ''Umugati'' was perfect I didn't notice any accent, and it is the way we Kinyarwanda speakers say it and that's the same way you will say ''Ubuki'' like you said you drag the ''u''. Anways your understanding of various African languages is amazing
Yay! Thank you!
I enjoyed this video! Your pronunciation of Kinyarwanda is actually very good. I didn't know Luhya was a Bantu language. I rather thought it was of the same linguistic family as the Luo language. We have so many related words, indeed. And I feel both languages also share much syntax based on what you said about "Kane." In Kinyarwanda, there are also differences in how the (numeral) adjective is spoken in agreement with the noun it refers to. We say: "abana bane" (four children), "ibisheke bine" (four sugarcanes), "imifuka ine" (four bags), etc. Keep up the good work, Sis! 👌🏼👌🏼❤❤
There you go! You just taught me two more new words for sugarcane and bag. Thank you😊
In luhya we say abhana bhane..means four children
I appreciate your research sister
Thank you for your acknowledgement 😊
Wooo! Doreen, Congratulation!! This thing is blowing up. Word comparison is your natural niche girl. Ride it till the wheels fall off. Kinyarwanda is obviously remarkably similar to Luhya, and just like Lingala and Luganda, Kinyarwanda is Kimaragoli but on different drugs. More of the same please
You are hilarious 😅, on the drug part. Hehe. And I am happy you're still here. You must be a true fan of languages.
I was reluctant to make this video for a long time. My Rwandese subscribers asked me to make it when I made the Maragoli video but I knew I don't speak Maragoli and resources on it are very limited. But like I always say, if I share what I know. And I did exactly that. Now I see myself relocating to Rwanda😅. I am packing my staff.
Anyway, thanks for always being here and adding your insights.
Wonderful information.
So nice of you
You are getting it right, both Kinyarwanda and Kiluhya are bantu languages. No matter how you are pronouncing, this work is really amazing
Oh thanks😊

Am so blown out by this simple video the much ekegusii (kisii) language in kenya relates to all this languages especially kinyarwanda is impressive!! We definitely have a common ancestor!! I believe we are the sons or Israel!!
I'm so glad that finally a Gusii has agreed to my earlier speculations of Gusii relating so close with Maragoli. Because, Maragoli is closely related to Kinyarwanda, and the relationship keeps growing. I was amazed, too
When I came across the bantu-rwandese philosophy of being by Alexis Kagame, I felt I was reading something about modified Lusamia. So many similarities. There is so much to learn about the Bantu languages, and I enjoy reading the cultures related. I Thank you for this. Glued.

I worked with Zimbabweans, they told me so many words we have in common.
For instance the old man who told me those words was Professor Makuza and that time our Prime Minister was Hon. Beenard Makuza. Their President was HE Robert Mugabe and we have so many people called Mugabe in Rwanda.
If you check well, you will find these words in Zimbabwe, Mbeba, Mvura, kiboko, kikokora, ....,I may be mistaken....
Oh yes, you have a point. I have been told the same on this channel. Actually that name Mugabe is almost similar to Mugambi and Mogambi in Kenya.
That means you can understand when someone from these tribes of Zibambwe speak, right?
Umugambi is also kinyarwanda word meaning goal, objective, purpose. So Mugambi is a name of a man who has a goal to achieve
Waluhya is a community from large rwandan tribu( Abahutu) meaning bantou who migrated in Kenya in 18 century
Even in kikuyu, kamba languages there are so many rwandan words. But kikuyu communities according to history, are from DR Congo
Rwanda is where people originates. It should be normal
Wow that is amazing! From here 09:55
Continue to dig deep because I think there is our brothers in Kenya. In Kinyarwanda we sa:

That is Kinyarwanda you said. Thanks and big up!
Wow! Really? I had no idea you would understand all that. It's so impressive. I think Africa, we are one. Now, I am gradually proving this.

Great video. Agreed, they are quite similar indeed.
Kirundi and Ikinyarwanda are almost similar but not exactly the same, but the two peoples can easily do conversation and understand each other in his/her own language
Finally, I now understand why I have a difficult time differentiating the two languages. So they say Ikinyarwanda and not Kinyarwanda? Wow
Kirundi and kinyarwanda are the same only that different appellation, rwandans understand everything in kirundi and Burundians do understand everything from kinyarwanda
@@luhyalanguageandcultureKirundi too is referred to as ‘ikirundi’ by native speakers.

I am writing this down. I must look at your language and see whether I can find resources on it. I would like to see how it relates to my Luhya. Thanks so much for your input. Your the best😊
The Kenyan language that's closer to Ikinyarwanda is actually the Luhya dialect of Maragoli and other Luhya dialects than Gikuyu and Kisii languages even though they have some words of similarities. The following are other words that can be related to the same meaning in Lulogoli a Luhya dialect to Ikinyarwanda:
Nimugoroba - Mugoroba -Evening
Umutwe - Mutwe- Head
Amazi- Amatsi - Water
Mbabazi- Tsimbabazi -Sorry/Forgiveness
Umurozi -Omulosi - a Witch
inzoka - inzokha -Snake
Umuhanuzi - Umulakusi - Prophet
Amaguru - Amakulu - Legs in Wanga dialect
Kubona -khubona -To see in Bukusu dialect.
Abarwayi - Abalware - Sick people
Gishya - Hya - New -in Lulogoli
Icokurya - Ichukurya/Ishukhurya - Food
Ndaza- Ndatsa/Nditsa- I'm coming.
Izina - Risina- Name in Bukusu
Imyaka - Imiaka - Age
Ijuru-Ikulu - Heaven
Isi- Asi - Earth/World
Inzu- Inzu - House
Inzuki- Inzushi - Bee
And so many other words that can't fit here, so if u visit Rwanda and u speak Luhya dialects it's easier for u to learn and comprehend Ikinyarwanda than Cushitic & Nilotic speaks.
@indechero, I am soo glad you commented on this subject. You are 100% spot on. I am a Maragolian of the greater Luhya community. Even though I speak the Kimaragoli dialect and should know, lots of people who don’t speak the dialect firmly assert that Maragoli and Kisii speak the same language. I have turned blue in the face trying to dispute that, but it doesn’t work. I am like, I speak Kimaragoli, when I listen to Kisii’s, I have no idea what they are saying. Contrast that to when I listen to Kinyarwanda, is like I am listening to Kimaragoli. No google translate needed, thank-you. Kimaragoli dialect seems to be everywhere in East, Central and South Africa. Someone recorded some pygmies in the deep Congo Forest close to Cameroon, I was surprised they spoke with a Kimaragoli/Kinyarwanda dialect. You listen to Bunyoro language of Uganda is the same thing.
Thank you so much for your input! I'm amazed at how many similarities exist between Kinyarwanda and Luhya dialects. So I shouldn't have too much trouble learning the basics of that Maragoli dialect. For me, these two peoples used to live in the same area centuries ago but were split by successive waves of migration. Otherwise, you won't be able to explain how so many similarities could occur. Thanks again for your comment. Peace! 🙏🏽
You did very well to outline those words here. I am also learning for sure. Thank you
@@javanuwamungu5824 You won't need too much of a refresher course. It's the same language as far as words are concerned, but the accent may vary here and there-that would be the tougher part. And you are right, I think together, we all used to run around naked and away from large snakes and other wild creatures that wanted to do harm to us in the forests of Congo centuries ago. We then took off and went in different directions.
Actually it's all known kinyarwanda and Maragoli are so similar
It's a great job you are doing

I m Kinyarwanda speaker, I think you nailed it.
There are similarities between the two languages. And your pronunciation of the kinyarwanda words is correct.
Thank you! 😃
I THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR GOOD RESEARCH !!!
AND YOU ARE A GOOD TEACHER/LECTURER !!!
CONGRATULATIONS !!!
AND GO AHEAD !!!
📚 👏
Thank you, I will.
And yes, I am a teacher. About research, Rwandese people have made it very possible to learn their language. The resources are so many that you are torn in between which one to choose from.
On the other hand, My Luhya people of Kenya haven't done much on writing about Luhya. So resources are very limited. Again, there are many subdialects that are related and unrelated in terms of vocabulary.
Thank you for your kind words
You really make me feel better 🎉❤🎉
I was waiting for such a video and I got it! I can literally understand 90% Kinyarwanda.
Hope you enjoyed it!
I am a big fan of learning new languages
I have been in Rwanda thrice and could understand a lot of words in Kinyarwanda which are similar to Kikuyu words.
New sub, here for more
Hi Eddie, thanks for subscribing. I guess travelling alot makes you learn languages by default 😊
Good collection dear young sister . Encouraging research words are related very much may be also related to historical movements and rituals . Cattle keepers and agriculturists.
Ooh yes! You bought up a very important point, Joseph. Thanks for your input
I appreciate your research! I am Rwandan. Your analysis is correct 💯
Thank you!
You did it very well!
Its very interesting. I come from North Tanzania. My region Kagera borders Uganda and Rwanda. My tribe is Mhaya.
So many words are similar to my
language too.
We call honey- O bwoki.
Journey- Orugendo.
Whats news - Amakulu.
Food- Ebyakulya.
Numbers.
1 - Emo.
2 - Ibili
3 - Ishatu.
4 - Ina
10 - ikumi
20 - Makumi gabili.
Wow! I find this very fascinating. Indeed, all these Bantu languages are related
@Josephine. I lived in Tanzania (1977-1982, 1984/1985) as a Burundian refugee. I worked at the Kyerwa Tin Project in Karagwe in 1978/1979 and I noticed how the food and the language had similarities with what we have in Burundi. After I learned Swahili, only my coworkers from Dodoma knew that I was a foreigner. I always will be grateful to Tanzania.
Oh. Thats nice to hear. You are from Burundi, have lived in Tanzania and even worked in Karagwe. And that you even speak kiswahili. Nilifikiri wewe ni Mjaluo kutoka Kenya. I can see from your looks that you look more either Burundian or Rwandise as well you could come from any of those countries from the great lakes region.
Histoeically, its said that long time ago there were a Chwezi empire which ruled Uganda, a part of Kenya where the Luo livs, north west Tanzania Kagera region and Kigoma region, Eastern Kongo, Rwanda and Burundi, including some parts of Zambia.
If you are interested you should goggle the Chwezi empire it will broaden your knowledge.
I currently live in Norway. One day two women were in front of me. They were talking among themselves. One of them told the other that " Tugende tushashure" that is exactly what a Mhaya person would have said. Meaning "let us go and pay".
I asked them where they were from. They were from Eastern Kongo. And we were all buying matoke.
@@josephinenestory2382 Now you scare me. Where did you see my looks since I don't use Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp,..I don't remember whether gushashura was used by old people in my village. I worked on Bulyankulu Gold Exploration Project in Kahama District (1977/1978), Kyerwa Tin Project, Busolwangili Gold Project in Nzega District (1981/1982). So I had my share of life in a tent, but we were paid a decent extra night allowance (except in Kyerwa where there was housing from a previous Finnish drilling program). When there was no field work we returned to Dodoma (Geological Survey of Tanzania-Idara ya Madini). I am glad to hear that today we have modern gold mines at those places. I still follow what is happening in the Tanzania mining industry (Kabanga nickel mining, metal smelter/gold refinery in Kahama,..). Thank you for the recommendation, I will check out what is written about the Chwezi empire. I am quite informed about our Burundian kings (maybe because the late king Ntare V Charles Ndizeye visited our secondary school in Ngozi (northern Burundi) in 1966? when he was still crown prince).
This shows that Africans we are Brothers and sisters
Not Africans but Bantus,a Zambian was being interviewed by a BBC reporter and as a Kenyan bantu I could grasp what he was saying
I'm Rwandan, i must say that you tried very much 9/10 only nturaka and ndula are not really related in pronunciation but all others words were very much related. I must also comfirm what you said, kinyarwanda and Kirundi are almost the same like 95/100. Keep up the good work my sister
Wawww, that's so amazing. Happy for you our sister from Kenya
You're welcome to Rwanda🇷🇼
Can't wait!

As we both speak Bantu languages of course there should be some similarities. But to be honest am so surprised by how those languages resembles. Yeah, you got. I appreciate how you tried to pronounce Kinyarwanda words. I wish like I can send some voice replies. Keep up the good work!!! I'm originally from Rwanda but not living there.
Ooh how I wish you could send vouce responses 😊. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I was literally struggling to pronounce the words
