Thanks for the wonderful video. I'll tell you the Kinyarwanda translation of shoulder (shoulders) and belly button (belly buttons)
(ENG)Shoulder(shoulders):(KINY) Urutugu (intugu)
Belly button (belly buttons): Umukondo (imikondo).
The words (umukondo and imikondo) can also mean handles of some containers like cups (if it has a handle), jerrycans, etc
Also, if the belly button is a bit protruded and not well tucked into the belly, we call it IKIROMBA/IROMBA. The plural forms are respectively IBIROMBA/AMAROMBA.
In Kinyarwanda, generally speaking, the noun class system of bantu languages is highly used.
If a noun begins
a) umu- (person, various kinds) plural begins in aba-
Eg: umuntu (person) -> abantu (people)
Umusore (unmarried young man)-> Abasore
Umukecuru (old woman)-> abakecuru (old women)
b) umu- becomes imi- when talking about things
Eg: umutima (heart)-> imitima (hearts)
Umusozi (hill/mountain)--> imisozi (hills/mountains) etc
C) iri- becomes ama-
Eg iryinyo (tooth)-->amenyo (teeth)
Iriba (well/ditch)--> amariba (wells/ditches)
Also any noun that begins with i- in singular form and the root (unchanging part of the noun when converting into singular and plural) gets attached directly to the i- gets the plural form beginning with ama- . This is because the ri- was possibly lost a long time ago in the development of the language.
Examples include: ivi (knee)--> amavi (knees)
Ifu (flour, one type)--> amafu (flour, more than one type)
Etcetera
d) iki- becomes ibi- (this includes words that begin with igi- also are begun with ibi- in plural)
Examples include - ikibazo (question/problem)--> ibibazo (questions/problems)
Igiti (tree)--> ibiti (trees)
Ikiraro (bridge/stable)--> ibiraro (bridges/stables) (here, this Kinyarwanda word has different pronunciation where the version for stable has a long a sound at the -ra- syllable )
Etcetera
e) nouns beginning in in- remain the same. You get the meaning from context of inflection of other words
Eg inka (one cow) --> inka (cattle/many cows)
Inkende (one monkey)-->inkende ( monkeys)
Inkoko (one chicken)--> inkoko (chickens)
f) uru- becomes in-
Eg: urukwi (one fire wood) --> inkwi (woods for fire)
Urutoki (one banana plantation)--> intoki (more than one banana plantation)
Urwara (nail)--> inzaara (written as inzarabut read with a long a vowel sound)
This word inzara (can be ready as inzara (hunger/famine: this belongs to class e) above) or as inzaara meaning nails.
If uru- is used as to describe the enlarged (mostly derogatory or negative meaning) form of a noun, it becomes ibi- in the plural form.
Eg: urutwe (big head, insulting) --> ibitwe (big heads). The normal way of saying it is using umutwe and imitwe as the meaning for head and heads.
Uruzu (big shabby house)--> ibizu
The other noun classes include place markers like ku-, mu-, ha-, i- and e- which are basically prepositions.
There are others but they are not straightforward to explain and so I'll stop my long comment here.
Hope it helps anyone just wondering about the singular and plural forms in Kinyarwanda.
By the way, it is Ikinyarwanda rather than the anglicised form of Kinyarwanda. And it's more pronounced as Ichyinyarwanda rather than Ikinyarwanda. You'll forgive my poor phonetics!
Be blessed
Great video. Im a luhya from the Banyore subtribe of Luhya tribe. Love your research.
Awesome! Thank you! I am glad to have an Anyole on board😊

I am from Namibia herero tribe, speaking otjiherero, there are so similar words, very very interesting. Thank you sister keep on doing the good work.
You're right. Keep up
Thank you, I will
I used to live in Kenya and I had a Luhya friend. His mother one day said in Kiluhya something sounding like in Kinyarwanda " Reka njye gutekera abantu ibyo kurya". I told her that I understood what she said. She was completely suprised.
Was it by any chance a Maragolian. That is how a Maragolian would say it
@washburn182 yes, it sounds like Maragoli. It could be either Maragoli or Samiya.
In Xhosa 🇿🇦..Reka hamba niye kuthengela abantuu into yokutya.
You are good at kinyarwanda speaker l'm in rwanda thak you

Don’t worry with R/T [Umutwe/murwe] because they are all the same.For example Rwandese says Umunhu instead of Umuntu ,it is just a spiritual problem to fail to process .
😅😅 That cracked me so hard. Spiritual problem indeed😅.
The tongue refuses to behave. Oh my! You're hilarious.
Thank you!
But that is untrue... umuntu is umuntu... we have nothing "nhu" in our grammar...
@@buterajonathan9279I am about pronunciation
@buterajonathan9279 rwandan write umuntu but we say umunhu our ntu doesn't sound ntu, there is no t sound in it.
Keep it up my young sister.
I can't wait to hear from you.
I wish you to become a foreign affairs minister in Rwanda or Kenya.good job
Ooh thank you! You really have big dreams for me😊. A big Amen to that.
Umukondo/Imikondo=belly button (s)
Urutugu/Intugu=shoulder(s)
Thank you very much. I'm going to tell my sun to wash his umukondo😊. I have realised that many Kinya nouns have a singular with an "U" and plural with an "i"
I hope it's not an assumption.
@@luhyalanguageandculture you're right ! Nouns beginning in "uru" have plurals in "inz" or "int" Urwara/inzara, urugi/inzugi, urwego/inzego...

Words like lala are rendered rara .We are One.

Eating in kinyarwanda is "kurya" but some kids say it wrong and call it "kurga" if not corrected it will end up being a synonym or another people's language. You can see how people may have been speaking the same language and after many years some words became transformed to make a different language. Also don't forget that in Kinyarwanda have synonym words where one is used in area and not in another one for ex: imbugita, umusho, icyuma for saying a knife. Also we have old kinyarwanda that we call urunyakirima, you can find in a lot of more words which may be similar to other languages but no longer used , and we may think it is not kinyarwanda. So shoulders that you call amavega may exist in old kinyarwanda and be called amatega from the verb Gutega and names such as abategarugori.
We are one family
Indeed we are
You belong to be a Rwandese. Come and enjoy our peacefull country.
