It is amazing how a particular song will invoke a specific memory. For me, it is when the first of my friends left home to move into a bedsit. He didn't have much in terms of pots and pans but he did buy an amazing stereo with a pair of Mission speakers to compensate. When we went to visit him for the first time in his new abode this is what he put on to show off the system. That first chord on the piano is a killer!
Supertram is one of the rare bands where the live performance of a song sounds exactly like the studio version, this show us the great talent of the musicians.
My dad isn’t afraid to belt out song lyrics during any song he knows.. this song come On the radio, he tells everyone to be quiet and turns it on high volume. I admire my dad so much, thank you dad for showing me the greatest music of all time
He must have a great sense of drama !..my dad was always kind of quiet and I grew up a bit introverted but somehow now at 58 years old I sing aloud and also toss in scenes from movies while speaking to others...enjoy your time with your Dad...I would travel time and space to be with mine again.
I love this! It’s my hopeful dream. I do this with my now 17 yr old son constantly. He complains sometimes, sometimes, he listens. But I know, with this being our long drives to nowhere song, just to chat, he will always remember me when I’m long gone & he hears this. And know it was our time to be friends, since I was mom & dad at home. I hope. 🖤
1980 Junior year in HS , playing this song on my new car stereo , cruising around with my friends in my 65 Falcon . Wish I can go back in time for one night , just for a few hours,
I like how the song begins and ends with the melacholic piano and harmonica. It's like we begin at home, unappreciated and depressed. Then we go out into the world, feeling more upbeat as the music takes on bright pop and klezmer flavors. Yet, by the end, we're taking the long way home through dark chord changes and the piano's and harmonica's lamentations.
This is beyond talent, it’s divine inspiration. Hodgson is awesome, his lyrics and his singing is so unique and sublime. Supertramp is one of the best bands ever, what a great era for good music I’m glad I’ve lived through all of that.
Everything was so good, now it's like everything is going into decline, we couldn't do it better, human beings are always headed towards disaster apparently.
SUPERTRAMP is way beyond most rock bands in the rock n roll hall of fame. The fact that they have not been inducted shows the politics of the industry.
Jeez, I was a kid when Breakfast in America came out…really liked it. I’m 56 now and finally realize how incredible this band was. Supertramp was so full of talented musicians and vocalists, they’re really underrated. I’m so glad to have rediscovered them all these years later.

I remember this song from a movie, don't remember the name, but it was about a husband who killed his wife and the kids suffered so bad. I love this song.
The movie you're thinking of is called "Blind Faith" and it starred Robert Urich. This song was in the scene with a young teen and his mom, played by actress Joanna Kerns. She wanted to continue driving and not go home right away so she could finish listening to the song. It was a lovely scene in the movie. 😊
Saw them on the famous last words tour in Norfolk Virginia, and boy oh boy, that was the best concert I ever saw. Maybe it was because they knew it would be their last. They just put their heart and soul in that performance.
Nahh, mate. Plenty of bands from the 70s/80s sounded awesome live, long past their prime. Can be argued that a band like Status Quo has less complicated music but what they do, they do well. Its modern artists that sounds like sheit live... and to be fair some are decent and some are even better live then in studio. Not all contemporary artists are pop artists. Try listening to Joe Bonamassa and Beth Heart (I'd rather go blind) and come back and tell me that they don't sound this good. Its clearly not the same amount of professionalism now as then. That said, plenty of bands/artists from the 70s and 80s are since long forgotten... Partly because they really wasn't that professional.
At 67 years old and being a veteran of several local bands as well as travelling musical ventures I can tell you how personally I take all the lyrics to this song. I did just that more than once: I indeed did take the long way home. My ex wives do indeed thing I'm a joke, and they indeed treated me like the greenery, the scenery, the furniture. (Their loss.). Yes, I thought of myself as a romeo playing a part in picture show, but so did everyone else making music when I was. I was just being a part of the scene. It still hurts just a bit to hear this song when it gets to the line "....if you'ld had more time.' (I don't drink when I listen to this song, obviously...it could get really sad-weird if I did.) I think I'll get out my guitar and see if there isn't just a bit more time still available. Peace, ya'll.

I Supertramp sono stati una delle più grandi band di sempre. Musica particolare e piacevole. Orecchiabile e con un grande talento come Roger Hodgson, oltre a Richie Davis. Peccato non avere la fortuna di assistere ad una riunione come hanno fatto tanti altri.

Why should you care if you're feelin' good?

All the greenery is comin' down, boy
And then your wife seems to think you're part of the furniture
Oh, it's peculiar, she used to be so nice
When lonely days turn to lonely nights
You take a trip to the city lights
And take the long way home
Take the long way home
You never see what you want to see
Forever playing to the gallery
You take the long way home
Take the long way home
When you're up on the stage, it's so unbelievable
Oh, unforgettable, how they adore you
But then your wife seems to think you're losing your sanity
Oh, calamity, is there no way out?
Does it feel that your life's become a catastrophe?
Oh, it has to be, for you to grow, boy
When you look through the years and see what you could have been
Oh, what you might have been
If you would have more time
So when the day comes to settle down
Who's to blame if you're not around?
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
