Over 5 years later (October 2022), this video is still very informative! Many of the details apply to multiple Sony mirrorless cameras, not just the A9. Than you!!!
No, thank YOU! Please feel free to help spread the word. 🙂
Excellent run-down.
Probably also worth saying it takes many thousands of shots to master a tool like the A9.
Great little no-nonsense tutorial video. Thanks for posting
Very very informative videos Gary, and in plain English. Well done.
Great vid and tips. That last bit about not getting caught up in all the different settings and instead focusing on the creativity: couldn't be more true. 👍
I bought the RX10 IV and your book on it. These videos, part 1 and part 2, were very helpful as an addition to your book to further elucidate these functions. As others have said, you have a fantastic style of explaining in an easy to digest manner. Thank you
awesome video and technology. Please keep the coming out as the info applies to many Sony camera bodies.
I have over 16,000 shots on my a9 and picked up a couple of useful tips from this video. Thanks.
Awesome video. I learned a lot from you. You made my camera very useful now.
You’re one of the best! Almost like a rocket scientist! 😉
Hope your family is recovering from its recent lost!
Take care!
Excellent and very helpful videos. Also, your book was/is worth every penny. Thank you.
Very informative and well done.
This was VERY helpful for me thinking about getting an A9. Part One also.
Gary you make me go grabbed my camera at 2am, thanks so much for this videos!!!!!!
Very informative, thank you very much. I've a better understanding now.
Hi Gary. Thanks for your great work! I hope you do "un-obvious things" video for the newer Sony models :-) QUESTION 1: Does the A73 have advantages over the A7R3? I recall seeing a video someplace (I forget, sorry) that the newer A73 had some meaningful advances, such as autofocus or operations speed. QUESTION 2: Do any of the current A7x bodies allow for instant over-ride of face autofocus? On my a6000 sometimes it chooses the wrong face and I need a quick way to drop into spot focus -- ideally assign a button to the over-ride. This is the main thing holding me back from going Full Frame Sony. THANKS!
IIRC you can link AE to the focus point but only in Spot focus. Pity it doesn't apply wherever focus was achieved.
Excellent video
Hi Gary. Thank you for your amazingly informative videos, I find them very interesting. I´m setting up my A9 and I´m having problem with the center button "focus standard" function, in my case it only centers the active focus point but not actually activates the focus system nor overrides any other setting ( AF-C, wide, lock on, etc), Im a professional photographer with a huge selection of Sony full frame cameras and I´m very used to this "Standard" function in my A99 and A99II´s. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you very much!
Thanks a lot Gary. Very well put. I've been struggeling with my new fanstastic camera for a week as it's my very first digital full format camera. Many years with analog cameras though and in between a digital 'starter' as the NEX7 has been to me.
Therefore I lack a lot of the 'modern' electronic features been introduced the last decades and to get a grip on a Sony A9 is trying to understand what functions do as well. To an old dog like me it seems wonderful to let the camera do a lot of the work. Feel almost guilty as a cheater doing it, but in the end it is shooting good pictures that matters. Not to spend minutes to figure out a nice focus and exposure. The more I understand of the camera the more fantastic this litte machine it is to me.
You get right to the pots I had some trouble to sort as the differences between those possiblities to 'store' settings, how the camera work with AF-Areas as well as meetering. In those two rather short clips you seemed to answer my personal questions. Great presentation and clear language, Thanks again.
Have to ask about the lack of focusing at horisontal contrasts? You just state it is so but is this a unique disadvantage to A9's compared to other cameras? Is perhaps this inability of minor importance and as almost no motive shows up with just that orientation? Thank's in advance.
Will try not to push more questions as you're really not any support-service ;) but if you just perhaps can comment on an unexpectated behaviour, when trying to figure out my great super modern camera?
From my long 'analog' photo history I brought the old Canon 300mm f2.8 -lens (once called Canons Sport Tele) to the digital era, as I bought a NEX7 because it was possible to mount that old FD lens on the NEX - and consequently now on the A9. Manual focusing, but the zoomfunction on a c-button is great help.
My plan was to shoot in A-mode with let's sat f2.8 and use the ISO Auto Min. SS function to prohibit the camera to use a too long shutter time. Set that to 1/1000 and the result would be that the camera 'switched' to increasing ISO-vaues if the exposure needed more light.
Did a test but was not that happy as it didn't work. It stayed on the set ISO value and was down at 1/80 instead. I might add that with that setup the camera doesn't recognize any f-value at all. Perhaps that fact prohibit the Min SS function? Sad if there's no work around in that case as this was something I aimed for.
Your comment on this would be most helpful. I will not make this a long thread :).
Thank's for the attention Gary. I'll make a note and will pass a mail. Hope you have a nice stay.
Gee, thanks! Now I want a Sony a9 even more! If I ever hit the lottery or get adopted by Oprah, I'll have to get one. Great video!
Xtremely helpful Mr. Friedman. Thanx a lot for sharing! Actually, with my 24-70 2.8 GM I have many problems to focus on very dark places for the bride, follow her until she reaches the center of the room and then the waltz. Could you help me with some advice?
Thanks !!!
Great video. My a6400 has the same horizontal focusing constraints. Made me wonder though, why doesn't the contrast detection part of the hybrid system take care of this albeit at a slower speed?
That's an outstanding question. The truth is I don't know. But if I were designing this stuff....
My assumption is that course grained focus using PD always works first and then fine grained focus uses CD. As you suggest - weird design decision to not have CD cut in when course PD fails. I suppose the CD algorithm might only handle a small focus range - who knows!
This is all of academic interest, as lots of ways to overcome the discussed issue in the very rare situations it manifests itself. I just get interested in how things work.
Greetings from the UK.
I'm a new Sony user here. Has anyone have a problem with A7III autofocus that causes the camera restarting itself from time to time? I've been using it (with native lens) and seen this problem since a first couple of days but didn't realize it's the camera's faulty with the autofocus. It noticably goes off in autofocus mode and turns back on in the other focus mode depending on which one I used before changing to autofocus. Can't find anything in google about this problem with A7 series, AND ITS HAPPENING ONLY IN LCD MODE?!
Do You know, where's the problem is?
Hi Gary!
I mainly photograph birds and i found it very difficult to auto focus the bird on the horizontal wire by using flexible spot s but i have to use it since bird is very small and i want to focus on it's eyes.
How would you solve this in your experience?
Thanks!
I recently purchased the Sony a9 can you put the link about the book you wrote to explain the camera?
Ok thank you, just ordered on amazon..
Gary where are you located I'm in Florida
I'm in California. I tried emailing you but it bounced back. Feel free to email directly at Gary at Friedman Archives dot com .

A bit poor that the AF points are not cross type!
Cross is a limitation , not a feature
