If ever there was an example of excellency in UA-cam presentation this is it. Perfect timing, clarity, and scope of topics. No redundancy, every word counts. I'm an ex owner of a photo studio and (arrogantly) I nearly skipped this vid. Thank goodness (and you) for this mega guide to an awesome but very complex camera. I 'm really looking forward to looking at all your vids. It might be worth, in this vid, adding how to transfer files via USB to a PC or Mac. Finally it seems you'd be the guy to create the market-leading, paid-for e-book on this camera and what you can do with it. Thank you very much.
Wow, thank you very much Jackie :) I did create a seperate tutorial on connecting your camera to the computer and transferring videos off. I also recently created another video on how to import your photos into Adobe Lightroom from your camera. Jay
we share the same last name and I worked as a Wedding Photographer pro for 33 years but retired for 22 and have a large variety of digital cameras now and in the past over the years. One of my favorites is the RX 100 IV and today I purchased the RX 100 VII, Began the video last night and now completed it. May view it again and locate the others and see what others show also. So much to learn an not sure what all I will use. Began my career doing movies but never did digital video editing but sure do lots of still images with a variety of programs. Each camera has differences and I like to set things up and just use the tool and that is really required when using a variety of different cameras. Think I will be busy. The image quality of the camera is superb.
I'm working at Sony Singapore ,I'm a new staff so my boss loaned me a Sony RX100VII to try it out and learn basic fundamentals of the functioning and operations of the camera. He told me to come to your video to learn from what you're sharing in your videos. Thank you so much for helping me to better understand the fundamental core of digital imaging.
Just got my RX100Vii this week and boy... 4.5 years later THIS VIDEO IS A DARN BLESSING! Thank you so much JASON!!!!! Even my own Camera savvy buddies don't give me this kind of info and knowledge!
I hate camera manuals. They never seem to explain in simple English and assume you understand the most basic steps. Thank you this is so much easier and I have learnt so much more in a short space of time. This is clear and I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Thank you for helping out an elderly, non techie lady who couldn’t even make out the details on my new camera much less understand the printed directions. You are my hero 😘
I bought this camera yesterday and this video has been like a gift from heaven. The Sony pdf manual is a staggering 634 pages, it would take days to find all the information that's in this video. Now I'm heading to your other videos. I've never seen any other videos that show such high quality images with an easy to understand and clear narration to match. New Sub!
@@Jason_Hermann Hi there. I just got this camera in the mail but when in video mode, I can hear the zoom making a lot of noise as it zooms in and out. Is this normal to be able to hear the zoom in and out on the actual video recording? It seems really loud.
@@Jason_Hermann they should make a biger point and shoot with 400mm zoom, in between the rx10 and rx100. an rx50 would be perfect for a small purse or sg. for casueal wildlife and family use it would be a perfect companion next to an iphone or high quality camea smartphone, with a usable biggger zoom.
This is exactly how I’d like to see a tutorial/review. There are so many channels that just praise cameras by saying it’s an improvement and just give out basic specs such as “It shoots 1080p” or “It has 10x zoom.” A lot of times they just build off of that feature with more praise without showing it’s utilities while you even gave multiple examples of different programs and products to help enhance the experience. This is seriously an amazing tutorial/review even after 2 years. I’m planning on investing on this camera and this video has let me know everything I need to know about it. Seriously, thanks.
You are very welcome Wesley, and I have a few more videos on the RX100 VII as well of you want to check those out ;) ua-cam.com/users/JaySonyAlphaLabsearch?query=rx100%20vii
I want to just say that I bought a Sony RX100vii a few days ago, and even though I had a head start out of the box because my previous camera was a Sony DSC-HX80, your video was EXCELLENT in quickly and efficiently taking me thru all this camera's possibilities! Really, I'm keeping this video on a laptop tab to refer to from time to time, as I'd forgotten just how many excellent menu features I'd not employed at all with the HX80... and also want to remember all the useful NEW ones available to me now with my upgrade to the RX100vii. Cheers! - a brilliant and concise job, and I can't wait to see some of your more specific videos 👍
Have just changed from canon g7x to Sony - and have always been on canon. this video is a masterclass in how to do an effective tutorial for quick onboarding to a new camera operating system. Thank you !
Jay, this video is timely! I've recently purchased this camera and all I could find are reviews. Hard to get by a solid tutorial such as this. You've explained the functionality and the application used on this camera with proper impartation of your knowledge & experience. There was this fear of screwing up the camera just by simply exploring the many modes/buttons/functions without knowing anything at all. Confidence was regained, appreciate the effort for making this video. You got yourself a new sub!
I just got my M7 and your video is very helpful! This camera is more expensive nowadays which is very crazy, it costs me $1300! I want to learn more about it and push it to its fullest potential. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank You, Jason, I am a huge Sony fan, I’ve been using Sony cameras for over 12 years, during 12 years I bought 3 Compact Cameras , 2 Bridge cameras, 1 Camcorder and 1 Mirrorless Camera, I can’t say I knew everything I needed to know about the products I purchased, at least I was familiar with the features I used on each Camera and one Camcorder, but going through your UA-cam video on RX100 VII, I learned a lot, I’ve been debating if I should bring RX100 VII or HX 90V camera to my upcoming Cruise, I decided to bring both Cameras with me to my vacation. Thanks again, Jason, for sure I will look for more of your videos so I can learn more about RX100 VII, the camera, I almost gave away to my sister due to HX 90V has higher Optical zoom , with which I might be able to bring home sharper images of the night Entertainment.
VERY nicely done. Couldn't ask for more in a start up video for a new camera. I had the MK6 and after watching this vid, I realized I didn't know my camera as well as I thought I did.
Thanks! Loved my ancient Canon A650is, back when their Powershots actually were fully featured, much like this RX100. Used my iPhone since its picture quality beat the Canon. Never liked the SLR format of camera, because I’m not a serious hobbyist, more a reporter. This tutorial was excellent. Good walk-through without swamping the noobie, well organized, good examples. Doing some serious traveling in retirement, this was recommended by a friend whose pics with it have been published.
Getting my RX 100 vii later this week, this video is a perfect introduction, clear, concise and really well presented, so much more easy to understand than the ridiculously complicated manual. Thanks much, looking forward to watching the rest of the videos.

Excellent video! I just bought this camera at Christmas and have been loving it. This video has been very helpful in learning about the options more in depth. Great visual and verbal instruction. Thank you for sharing.
This video was so, so helpful, thank you! I've had my camera for a few days now so there were a few things I'd already figured out but I learned so much and will make sure to watch your other videos 😊
Even though I wouldn't exactly refer to myself as a beginner, there were still a number of take aways for me from this excellent tutorial. Thank you, Jason. I used the Mark III version of this camera for many years before I decided to upgrade to the Mark VII last year. Reasons for upgrading were the the auto focusing system as well as the mild tele reach, albeit sacrificing a bit on the quite reasonable optical quality of the 24-70 lens of the mark III. I am using RX100 as an "always with me" camera when my primary camera - the Canon R5 - is too bulky or needed for wildlife shots on hikes with the family. In this case, the Canon is equipped with the EF 100-400 L and the RX100 serves as the landscape and portrait camera. However, being primarily a Canon shooter, I must admit that I do struggle a bit the Sony menu. In your tutorial, you mention the Zebra function for video. In fact, this is also available in photo mode (full manual in my case). I find it really useful as it could possibly warn me of overexposed areas in my scene, if only I knew how to correctly set it up. The challenge in landscape with people in the foreground is usually that the either the people are too dark or the sky is totally blown-out by over-exposure. This could possibly be prevented by lightening the foreground up with the flash. But when I expose for the landscape and then activate the flash the exposure simulation on the display basically treats the flash as an unlimited light source that may reach the farthest point at the horizon. I wonder if the exposure simulation could be set up such that it would just ignore the fact that the flash is activated. I'd appreciate it, if you can point me to the video where you explain some of these issues in more detail. Cheers, Urs
I would just use the histogram as apposed to the zebras for ease of use and so the zebras don't block what you need to see. If you press the display button on the back of the control wheel you can cycle thru until you see the histogram. On the right is highlights and it will show you it clipping if over exposed.. That 1" sensor only has so much dynamic range, so bright back ground and faces in the shade are not going to be possible in one shot unless you use the flash in fill mode maybe? I have not had that camera in a very long time so I'm not 100% sure about the flash options. Zebras can also work and based on the number like 95 for example will show you when the highlights are about to blow out. helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1920/v1/en/contents/TP0001552915.html?search=zebra
Thanks for responding @@Jason_Hermann You are right I guess, the histogram is a more reliable source of exposure information than the Zebra. I actually did set the zebra to the 100+ in the hope that it would allow for some particularly bight spots to be blown out but I did not really notice any difference between 95, 100, and 100+. I also struggled quite a bit to find the settings for exposure series in the Sony menu structure that I still find pretty awkward, but that's probably just me being more used to Canon. In fact, I searched for this function in the menu, as is the case in Canon cameras. It would never have occurred to me to look for this function in the single/continuous shot fn menu. Once I found this with the help of the manual finally, I did not understand why anyone would want to individually press the exposure button for each shot of the series. So, the sense of the BRK S function evades me completely. But I think the BRK C is really going to be useful and I am a bit annoyed that I did not search for this function any earlier. It would probably have yielded some stunning pictures on alpine hikes with the family last week. I do not trust the in camera HDR function because I want to have all the data in raw format and do the processing in LR and PS, and this is regardless of the camera brand. Just one more question: in one of the your videos on the RX100 vii you briefly show the camera with a quite intriguing base plate installed. I thought it might be from SmallRig but although they have a quite elaborate rig for the RX100, I don't want to sacrifice too much of the camera's compactness by adding a wooden grip. So I wonder what that base plate in your video was and where to source it.
Thanks for the excellent content Jay. I've only had this camera a few days now but watching your videos has made learning its features a joy! With past camera purchases I'd buy the tutorial books & download the manual. I did download the manual & as others mentioned it would take a while of eye strain to get a fraction of what you covered. It's great to watch & try what you are teaching. This camera is amazing & with your content I can explore & be more proficient faster. Really appreciate your usable content so clearly conveyed. Thanks again!!!! Bob V
I would have thought that one of the most important camera functions for new camera owners would be the delete function. So far I havent worked out how to delete multiple images without going through a long process deleting one at a time. And of course...there are no logical clues available for me to work it out with! A beginners video would have been the logical place to learn that info surely. I did learn a lot from this video though & appreciate that it is out there for confused people like myself to learn from. So thank you.
What you want to do is format the memory card to delete everything quickly in one action... MENU → (Setup) → [Format] I thought I mentioned that in the video, and I apologize if I did not... Jay
SUPER - and I have experience! Always used Sony cameras from digital dinosaurs thru Alphas and this served as a wonderful refresher. I learned a few things too. GREAT job and I will watch your other vids. Thank you.
Absolutely the best video I ever seen on buya camera I'm buying this tomorrow I was looking for a camera fir taking pictures now I found a nice small camrea.
I just picked up this camera. not a professional photographer. This video really helped me figure out how to set up the camera and use it. Great job !!! 👍
Fantastic Video....Thank You so much for taking the time and effort to make it....My RX 100 is being delivered tomorrow and really looking forward to getting my paws on it now..
Jason, What a terrific video. I've owned three different Sony RX100's and never really understtod all the features. I've owned the Sony RX100 VII since it was introduced and relied on the manual (big mistake). Thanks to your terrific video, I know how most of the features of my camera works. I look forward to looking at your other videos on this terrific camera.
Great tutorial. Thumbs up and subscribed. I bought this camera at the beginning of November and its NYE. Just now getting around to using it. Thanks a lot.
I have an RX100 VII arriving tomorrow. One thing about that grip/tripod is they really should have used an angled micro-usb plug into the camera to lower the profile so it doesn't stick out as much. This will reduce the amount of leverage damage to the socket that could happen if it gets caught or knocked.
Camera has arrived. Super-happy with it. Ordered some accessories. About to go through some of your tutorial videos. Thanks for sharing, you have a subscriber :)
hi,bro...i buy Sony RX 100 Vll.i don't know how to use it.bcos don't have manual.and i check in UA-cam how you use .... now i know bcos of your video.....THANK YOU VERY MUCH & GOD BLESS YOU....
Thanks so much for the detail and step by step outline you work through. Just picked up this camera and your video has made me even more excited about this purchase, it's usage in our upcoming travel & adventures plus every day options. Awesome 🤩
awesome tutorial! i just bought the mark 3 and its helped me a lot, as it is quite similar. Also been watching your other video which explains the different photo modes. Thank you!
I too bought this camera yesterday. Your video was a fantastic tutorial and got me up and running after one hour. Many thanks for taking the time to produce such a thorough, informative and easy-to-follow lesson.

I’m watching ‘cause I’m giving up my heavy DSLRs and lenses for this camera. I’m in my mid-seventies and going light and small in photography that got me addicted since the film SLR days.
Jason you’re the best I have learned so much! I sent you a little tip for all this help! Sorry I don’t have much money and I know you deserve more but keep doing this amazing stuffs! I really love the content and it’s so helpful for newbies like me! God bless you man
Wow - great video! I've been using the a6400 ever since it came out, but just picked up the M7 to lighten my load a bit on hikes. I'm used to the Sony menu system, but still picked up some great tips from your video - thanks!
Having watched many reviews on different cameras to try and choose what suited me best i chose this rx 100 vii as it ticked all the boxes. im just starting in vlogging so dont know anything about this camera. thankyou jay for keeping it simple so i can get off the ground. great tutorial. #chefstravels
Beyond grateful for this video and I'm sure future videos I'll be watching. Just got my new camera and want to use it this week at a concert. I have been trying to shoot basics the last 2 days, but any suggestions on large arena concert use would be appreciated.
I would probably just leave in in P mode with Auto ISO and zoom in and out as needed taking photos and videos. The lighting is so insane at concerts and changes so much it's hard to say what specific settings to use...
OMG Thank you so much for helping me with this! I was lost for 2 hours about how to turn off the stupid sounds that comes with the camera and I'm so happy that you've pointed it out for us! Turn off Audio Signals: @ THANK YOU OMG
Thanks again for this video, as well as the others in your RX100 vii series. I'm methodically watching them, camera in front of me, as I ensure that I'm learning all the features & capabilities in my new (March 2023 purchase) camera. However, when I turn my camera on, I'm waiting for it to say "Hey guys, what's happening. It's Jay from Sony Alpha-Lab. Do me a solid." I haven't found that feature, yet.
Omg, this was the best video ever! I'm a Sony newbie, and this video has definitely made me feel a lot less intimidated by my purchasing decision. Thank you for this. I am headed to check out the rest of your tutorial videos on this camera. :-)
Excellent tutorial. Very useful. We bought the camera 4 weeks ago and took about 2000 pictures during our holiday. But we had one issue. Every 200 pictures or so there were a few )completely) blurry ones, with not a single spot on the picture sharp. So it is not a matter of having the focus at the wrong place. It even happened when taking pictures on a tripod with the self-timer (so, no movement issue either). Any idea where this could come from? We also had the Mark III before and never had the issue there.
I saw your video on the Sony RX100 VII for the first time. I am impressed beyond words; the way you explain is amazing. However, it is impossible for a mortal like me to remember all the sophisticated features and how to set them etc. Do you have a printed book which explains everything about the RX100 VII? I find books much more convenient than videos. Would feel honoured if you let me know. Once again, you are an amazing teacher.
Wow, thanks! I do not have a book, but there are many on Amazon you can check out here: amzn.to/3b8q1ay Gary Friedman's books are extremely detailed from experience. Also, the Sony Help Guide is pretty darn awesome and can be printed from a downloadable PDF file if you like. See here: helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1920/v1/en/index.html
This is a textbook example of how to review a camera, easily the best I have ever seen. So its September 2024, do I buy the Sony RX100 V11 today for use as a travel camera or wait for something else?
It's still a great option today in my opinion and the technology has not really changed that much to improve quality beyond this for the ultra compact cameras...

So I wonder what that base plate in your video was and where to source it.
what a great tutorial. I watched it all. and I usually watch how to videos that are 15 mins max lol. good job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the video! I was hesitating if to buy this camera, but your video helped me to decide. It's great camera with so many functions!
You're very welcome!
Really appreciate this video. I got this camera last week and this video has really helped me learn the camera.
Great to hear and thanks for the comments!
Tutorial is very helpful. Learned a lot of things in your video. Thank you.
Bob V
Thank you Bob :)
Jason, another great job. I just placed an order to purchase the camera. Can't wait to set it up, thanks
Jay
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you.
Nothing to say but thank you so much for your help
Thanks to you, I just ordered one. You should publish a instructional DVD. This camera is Rocking just like tutorial!
You my friend have another subscriber. I'm an absolute beginner & this was really insightful. I'm getting this camera at the end of January!

Fantastic Video....Thank You so much for taking the time and effort to make it....My RX 100 is being delivered tomorrow and really looking forward to getting my paws on it now..
just bought this camera which arrives tomorrow, 'used to Sony menus but this camera looks like its got an extensive one! Can't wait for it to arrive!
Glad it was helpful and thanks for sharing :)
Great tutorial. Thumbs up and subscribed. I bought this camera at the beginning of November and its NYE. Just now getting around to using it. Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much for such a detailed tutorial! Just bought this camera and your vid helped so much.
Thank you for this instructional video. I just bought this camera
You're welcome!
So so massively helpful, I'm on my way to check out the other videos about this camera that you've made.
Thank you :)
Best user guide on YT by a mile!
Thank you Kevin :)
Great video, Jason. You have provided service. Thank you.
I love this guy he really takes the time to explain his camera. Thank you so much for the lessons I have learned . You the best
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you for making this and for balancing the detail and usage with the basic entry level understanding.

Thanks Jay. I was not looking forward to reading a huge PDF file. Great tips and explanations. Keep up the good work.
You helped me how to operate this camera, thank you 🙏
You are welcome!
I’m watching ‘cause I’m giving up my heavy DSLRs and lenses for this camera. I’m in my mid-seventies and going light and small in photography that got me addicted since the film SLR days.
Thx for this movie. It really helped me :) I also buyed the front grip really useful! I will look also to the other videos.
You're the man! That was a ton of good information and worth the time to watch it. Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Jason you’re the best I have learned so much! I sent you a little tip for all this help! Sorry I don’t have much money and I know you deserve more but keep doing this amazing stuffs! I really love the content and it’s so helpful for newbies like me! God bless you man
Thank you very much Nina :) I really appreciate it and I'm happy to hear the videos have helped you out! All the best, Jay
Wow - great video! I've been using the a6400 ever since it came out, but just picked up the M7 to lighten my load a bit on hikes. I'm used to the Sony menu system, but still picked up some great tips from your video - thanks!
Thanks for sharing and I wish I owned one of these for hikes ;) It's perfect for that type of thing...
Godsend - thank you so much, this is just what I needed as a beginner :-)
Well worth watching the whole way through. Great stuff. Will be checking out other videos on your channel
Having watched many reviews on different cameras to try and choose what suited me best i chose this rx 100 vii as it ticked all the boxes. im just starting in vlogging so dont know anything about this camera. thankyou jay for keeping it simple so i can get off the ground. great tutorial. #chefstravels
Thanks for the helpful information. I was actually going to pay for a course on the camera but I think I'll watch ALL of your videos on it instead.
Awesome, thank you!
Love your attention to detail! Thank you!
You are very welcome Wendy ;)
Beyond grateful for this video and I'm sure future videos I'll be watching. Just got my new camera and want to use it this week at a concert. I have been trying to shoot basics the last 2 days, but any suggestions on large arena concert use would be appreciated.
I would probably just leave in in P mode with Auto ISO and zoom in and out as needed taking photos and videos. The lighting is so insane at concerts and changes so much it's hard to say what specific settings to use...
@@Jason_Hermann, I'm sure I'll be shooting videos more than photos. Thank you for this information!
OMG Thank you so much for helping me with this! I was lost for 2 hours about how to turn off the stupid sounds that comes with the camera and I'm so happy that you've pointed it out for us! Turn off Audio Signals: @ THANK YOU OMG
Clear crisp, thanks for a great tutorial, on a great camera, thanks again,
Thank you for this video. Outstanding!
Thank you for an awesome, easy to understand tutorial. Going to watch your other videos.
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you for the valuable information. Blessings to you. ❤️
This is a great tutorial. It helped me a lot!
Glad it helped!
Omg, this was the best video ever! I'm a Sony newbie, and this video has definitely made me feel a lot less intimidated by my purchasing decision. Thank you for this. I am headed to check out the rest of your tutorial videos on this camera. :-)
Thank you very much for this video, it's really helpful!
You're very welcome!
Excellent presentation.Thank you .
You are welcome!
A very good tutorial -five of five star. I will follow you here on UA-cam 🙂
Thank you 😊
Excellent tutorial.
Thank you, your videos are very helpful and informative.
Glad you like them and thank you for the comments :)
Great video first day with the M7 so I will be watching for sure. Thank you for your time
Thank you and enjoy the camera!
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks, I have now ordered the RX100 for our holiday in New Zealand. Again, many thanks for your good work and advice.
Awesome! I got my camera next to me and follow it step by step.
Thanks for the comments and you will get the hang of it in no time ;)
@@Jason_Hermann looking fwd to your next video!
