One of the most useful and helpful tutorials I have ever seen, thank you very much sir. It took me 2.5 hours to watch, because I paused so often to take notes. Splendid!
I watched your video about using minimum shutter speed in aperture priority yesterday and now this video about metering and I have learned more useful information about using my Sony a6400 in a more sophisticated and satisfying way from your videos than any other instructional videos on UA-cam. I look forward to watching your other videos to learn more about my camera to improve my skills as an amateur photographer. Thanks for so much.
I just bought an A7R3 coming from other brands and this channel is like wikipedia for me. Amazing content, great presenter, wonderful photograph. Thanks a lot M. Mark Galer for sharing. Greetings from France!
Appreciate your in-depth, get-to-the-point process. No pointless 3-5 minute "theatrical" segment at the beginning of your videos to try to convince me I should watch. Excellent presentation; very helpful as I prepare to purchase an a6400 camera.
@@AlphaCreativeSkills I currently have a Sony NEX-6; very happy with it for many years, Was ready to buy an a-6400 until the recent $200 price drop on the a-6600. Is IBIS worth an additional $300?
Been using Highlight metering a lot on my a7R3 and you are right you do need to use where appropriate. On my a9, I've been predominantly in multi mode and using the exposure comp dial as needed for the given shot. I've used spot here and there as well as highlight. But so far I'm mostly using my a9 for street, wildlife, and sports and with your Aperature mode settings for action or portraits, it works great with the exp com dial. For landscapes and astro, I'm still using my a7R3 and im all manual there and highlight metering mode.
I've just been referred to this video as someone on talk photography has been getting confused about exposure and metering and I can see why they were getting confused when you say that using manual mode that metering is essentially disabled. I understand that if you're using the old sunny 16 rule then you 'ignore' what the camera is telling you as far as the exposure is concerned, but the metering modes aren't disabled and will still show you what the camera thinks the exposure should be, and this will change depending on what metering mode you're using. I understand that you allude to this in the video, but I just wanted to point out that it isn't quite crystal clear for people who don't have a great understanding. Maybe it would have been better to say that if you're setting/calculating your own exposure then the metering modes are irrelevant. I hope you find this useful, it's a great video overall.
Excellent material. And I think its relevance goes beyond the Sony Alpha world. You are an incredible teacher. I consider myself an advanced photographer and I have learned a couple of interesting things regarding the exposure mechaniscs of Sony A7III. Well doen and thank you very much
I've been using a combination of spot metering and AEL on the front half press, and tracking auto focus. With front Focus turned off I use back button Focus to get an initial Focus lock on my perch or subject , then slightly move around the image till I get my exposure right and lock it with a front half press AEL Auto exposure lock, then compose my image with the exposure I chose as the tracking stays on the subject. Great video as always!
Thank you Mark. You’ve again helped explain ways to a better image with my Sonys A series. I understand how to use my Sonys just a little more after each of your tutorials. Please keep it up.
Extremely well explained video. So many aren’t.They are presented by people that are full of unlistenable hype and bluster.I enjoy listening to your videos, thanks Mark..
Yes, just the facts, delivered in a low-key manner, and with subtle humour. Minute for minute, this is the most informative video I have seen on the Sony Alpha. Thanks Mark!
Great tutorial - deep, but well described and well paced. Previously I had assumed spot metering to be “guarantee this part isn’t blown out and f the rest” - I’ll stick to multi moving forward and experiment with spot in the specific ways you describe.
Your videos are such a pleasure to watch. They are very calming. I thank you for all of your info and advice. You have helped me tremendously with many of your videos.
All your videos are incredibly useful Mark but this one in particular clarifies a greatly misunderstood subject. Thanks for taking the time to make and post it.
Thank you so much Mark for your consistent professional teaching style and expertise! While I have just found this video, it proves to me that your community is one that I will continue to support as a member. I am just now learning more about metering modes, and I was trying to decide if I needed to buy a light meter. I will drop a question in the forum for more insight on this topic. Thank you so much!
Really worth watching this, it begged explaining what is in particular not so evident by just merely studying the array of symbols on the camera screen to have a well balanced photograph that can be finely adjusted, (if is necessary,) without blowouts in edit of detail recoverable. That overwise normally if not understood, be an unnecessary and not retreavable; whereass it could have been retained whilst on site taking the photograph.. Thank you for this , the examples here perhaps best explained in video as here, as to what actually happens; is an education in itself! ❤
Thanks a lot. There’re a lot of useful and important information. Knowing your camera will help us taking good pictures but don’t help us to be a better photographer. Love your presentations but sometimes more samples help to quickly understand. Anyway, thanks for the time you spent to give us this video.
The photo before the shadow recovery is how cameras have seen these scenes (without processing) since, and including, the days of film. The photo after the recovery is how most humans see the scene prior to photographing it.

👍Useful info, capably presented, without distracting hype - your vids never disappoint. Love the histogram as rear-view mirror analogy - will keep that in mind. Would like to see a vid that compares highlight exposure mode to zebras - how they relate and interact or contradict. E.g., would changing the zebra value alter the exposure chosen by cam in highlight exposure mode? Until use of exposure compensation becomes second nature, it can be too easy to forget to reset/adjust compensation dial between shots - agree?
AMAZING video as always Mark. Your vids are TOP NOTCH and well worth watching. I alwats learn something new or some good info even though Ive been shooting for over 25 years. Keep up the GREAT WORK you do with all your educational series. More more more Mark Galer please! :) Sony cameras rock! I love all of mine. Cheers
Some of my early cameras did not have light meters, so this knowledge was very important if you didn't want to use a hand-held light meter. Sometimes the meters in our cameras make mistakes and it is is quicker just to set the exposure to the ambient lighting conditions rather than continually compensating for the meter's error.
Well, you've exposed (!) a misconception of mine - I didn't realise that spot metering caused the spot region to be rendered as 18% grey. I wrongly thought that I was pointing the spot onto the region that should be 'correctly' exposed, thereby potentially over-compensating for the highlight that I was trying to preserve and underexposing the subject. I'll probably stick to Multi and the EV comp dial in future.
Mark ...you are the best !!! I learned a lot with your videos & save thousand dollars, is better to watch your videos that a visit to a Psychiatric Doctor.
Great tutorial once again. I was feeling pretty wimpy when you said you roll the exposure comp dial with your thumb. I have to do some thumb muscle building to get to that point on my a9😂
Thanks for video, helped heaps. I haven't used exposure comp because I thought it only effects JPEGs. I done some tests and now I feel like I can finally use auto iso and use exposure comp if it messes up at all which it has been over exposing a lot for me. Thats why ive been using manual iso and for action it has been really tough to quickly change from auto then scroll to iso 3200. Now from this video I found exposure comp just fine tunes what iso was auto selected, so now I can leave on auto :)
I just got my A7 R3 maybe a week or two ago and then my lens a few days ago, I can't seem to put the exposure into manual without shooting on auto ISO is there a way to have full control of it or is it just how Sony camera's are? I have been using a Nikon for several years and on my Nikon I am able to adjust the ISO, Shutter, F-stop and exposure all manually.
His voice is so calming that I fell asleep and need to watch again😀
I don't even use auto exposure. I'm fully manual but I can't stop watching this because thats so calming. xD
