  • Once again, best-selling photographer/author Gary Friedman goes over details about these two incredible cameras that most of the online review sites somehow missed. This video covers:
    0) The vertical grip for the Alpha 7CR
    1) Pixel-Shift Multi-Shoot (A7CR only)
    2) RAW video out the HDMI port (A7CR only)
    3) The unexpected sharpness of the 28-60 Kit lens
    4) Auto Framing feature
    5) The "Enlarge Screen" feature
    6) Subject Recognition and Tracking
    7) USB Tethering
    If you like the way Gary explains things, get the book that gives you ALL the details, available in either instantly-downloadable or printed versions at friedmanarchives.com/A7CR

    As a longtime Olympus user I appreciate you giving credit there for the pixel shift technique. However, Sony still needs to figure out handheld pixel shift and in-camera processing for the files, i.e. you can take 50mp shots handheld on OMD's (no tripod needed), and the images are combined and processed immediately afterwards right in camera. Of course there are many limitations with this technique, but it can be a good option for capturing more detail in static subjects and scenes. Really glad to see Sony adding such features since Olympus is gone and I have little faith in OMD Systems going forward.

      Don't write off OM Digital. I used to feel the way you did when they got bought out by an investment firm, but the feature set of the OM-1 was so advanced that Sony finally copied some of it in their A9 III. And the OM-1 is the first to introduce the computational photography techniques pioneered by modern smartphones which I wish all the big camera makers would do.

    Thanks Gary! Great Video!! Compré dos de tus libros traducidos al español, acerca de la Sony RX100 VII y la Sony A7rV. Para mí fueron un auténtico descubrimiento. Son espectaculares, los recomiendo totalmente a todos aquellos usuarios que quieran sacar el 100 x 100 de sus cámaras. Sería fantástico que tuvieras más manuales traducidos al español, aunque fuera de cámaras ya no tan modernas, como por ejemplo la A6600 que ahora está a un precio fantástico y seguro que atraerá a muchos compradores.
    De nuevo, gracias y un saludo desde Barcelona.

    Looks like a great resource. I don’t own the A7CR but thinking about it. Did not know about the USB tethering feature. I wonder if one could use this to over come the gripe about not having dual SD card slots, meaning images and video could both be written to both the inserted SD and tethered USB connected drive simultaneously.

    • @FriedmanArchives
      @FriedmanArchives  8 місяців тому +4

      Not as a USB connected drive, but as a link to an FTP server somewhere in the world. Yes, once properly configured, it could be used for that.

      I try to use video where it makes sense to use video - visually demonstrating features are so complex that would make your eyes glaze over if you were to read about it. (Like this: ua-cam.com/video/TwHZJxYle0s/v-deo.html ) But the book is over 800 pages in detail; making a video of that would take days to watch and months to make. A better balance would be to learn the basics from www.friedmanarchives.com/seminars-old/ and then consult the book for info on the new features.

    Something odd i noticed is the a7cII does not have the sonic sensor cleaning of the other recent sony cameras. When doing sensor cleaning it shakes the sensor like the very old sony's

    • @FriedmanArchives
      @FriedmanArchives  6 місяців тому +3

      Sony is remarkably inconsistent in how they implement the sensor cleaning. On some camera bodies it's pure ultrasonic; on some it's a mechanical shaking. No apparent rhyme or reason regarding which camera body gets which method.

    Really wanted to get the A7CR, but Sony screwed it bad by not adding the Micro-USB port for the use of any external intervalometer... so sad. USBmicro to USB-C adapters don't work either. Wanted to use it with my motorized Timelapse rig... or the ProTimer 3.

    • @FriedmanArchives
      @FriedmanArchives  3 місяці тому

      Historically they have taken things away from the A7C series to ensure their bigger cameras still had a market. On the original A7C they removed the front dial!! But you should also be asking yourself why modern intervalometers or remote controls don't come with USB-C plugs.

    Hello Mr. Gary Friedman, thank you for your information. I have a question about the lens adapter. I switched the Nikon D850 full-frame camera to a Sony A7iv. My question is, which lens adapter may I use for my new Sony a7iv with Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Nikon. do you have any information about the adapter?

    • @FriedmanArchives

      It depends on whether the Tamron is considered a "G" series lens or not. There's a whole section in my book about adapters; Section B.2.7 deals with Nikon.

    Hi, I am very close to buy a7cR but despite of low resolution of view finder and LCD, 2 important issues are still my concern: how to handle low 8fps for casual wildlife and sport? And how to handle limitation of 1/4000 sync flash instead of 1/8000 high speed sync? Please advise. Thank you

    • @FriedmanArchives
      @FriedmanArchives  6 місяців тому +4

      The A7CR isn't for everyone. The resolution of the displays isn't that noticable after you use the camera for awhile. And the flash sync speed of the A7CR is 1/160th of a second; anything faster mandates using HSS which severely diminishes the flash's reach. If 8 fps isn't fast enough for your needs I'd say it might be best to look at a different camera.

      @@FriedmanArchives i own a1 with GM lenses and waiting for a1 ii. Also i have fujifilm GFX100S for high end image quality, Xt5 as portable body with enough 40mp. But I didn’t find other important functionality in them such as sensor shield, the most accurate Ai / AF tracking, pixel shift, high resolution with high dynamic range, beautiful black and white straight out of camera, colour grading, etc in one place! I’m looking for the best light weight and compact size of camera for traveling and all around without compromising image quality and functionality. That’s why i am trying to make sure the limitations of 1/4000 sec hss flash and low 8 fps would be handled or i need to reconsider it! Your advice is very important to me. Thank you.

    I have a7c2. The kit lens is small, sharp... I would love it... but the zoom ring is just terrible. It is not smooth, actually quite opposite. It tends to stick, when I want to turn it just a bit it jumps. I was really dissapointed by that. I like small lenses, previously I was taking my a6400 and its 16-50PZ kit lens quite often, due to the compactness. I hoped for something similar with the 28-60 kit lens, but the zoom is so terrible I started to hate it. Actually it made me purchase 20-70 F4 two weeks ago (much sooner than I originally planned).

    The only reason I would switch from my A7c is if they made that brick any lighter or more like my original A7 form factor and once they added the new screen hinge. I thought the A7 screen wasn't optimal but I really hate the A7c one. Why they didn't give it the new screen, who knows.... Heck I'd take the old one over the side hinge any day.

    Gary, I've heard you created some sort of digital authenticity verification system. How do I find out more about that and apply it to my digital work? I've done some of my best work with digital mostly because of the instant feedback but what bothers me is unlike film, digital "photoshop fakes" are easily created and with AI it's even worse. It would be nice to have some kind of "proof" to show clients that my photos are minimally processed. Thanks.

      The whole sordid story is here: friedmanarchives.blogspot.com/2020/03/i-invented-camera-whose-output-could-be.html Read the update near the end; it's now a standard and Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Leica (among others) are producing products that adhere to it. Sony still hasn't officially released the capability although I know the necessary secure hardware is embedded in their most recent cameras. Hope this helps!
