In this video, I replace the battery in my BMW F30 340i. It was surprisingly difficult to find the correct battery for my car. The original part number had been discontinued, there was little to nothing in stores or online with matching specs, and information on the forums was contradictory or incorrect.
Luckily my local dealership had the battery in stock and it wasn't much more expensive than the batteries at the auto part stores. I wish I had just gone to the dealership first and saved myself the time and frustration. Keep in mind there is still a HUGE savings if you install and code it yourself rather than having the dealership install it. You will pay almost double if they install it for you.
If you're physically able to replace your battery at home (I'm not kidding, this sucker is HEAVY), you'll need to register the battery to let the car know that it has been replaced. I used Carly, but BimmerLink will work too. If you use BimmerLink and need to change the amp hours, you will need BimmerCode as well. With Carly you can do both in one app.

ONE LAST THING: there is a small white plastic plug on the opposite side from the vent tube. You’ll need to transfer that from your old battery to you new one
Justin! I'm also interested in an exhaust forbmy 2013 328i, any suggestions?
What are the symptoms of a old battery?
Or bad battery?
@@Mrfitness24726 i have an AWE exhaust and it’s great
@@realtruth97 struggling to start or not starting at all. If you have a newer BMW it may give you a warning like “increased battery discharge” when you go to start the car
@@justinbuice I'm new to the bimmer family. I noticed that my 2013 f30 328i has excessive body in corners unlike my RC. What can I do to fix this? tires, roll bar or springs?
When you are tightening up the terminal clamps..especially the negative, it is a good idea to put downward pressure on the engine side of the terminal to counter your tightening torque and minimize strain on the post. You can see in the video at 5:40 the stress on the post.
Just wanted to say this video helped me so much. I went to my dealer and got a new OEM battery for 250$ and registered it myself. Thank you!
The attention to detail in this video shall not go unnoticed! Great job Justin!
I appreciate that!! A lot went into this 😅
Great video and explanation of WHY you need to register your battery- many people have roasted their batteries because they didn't know they were supposed to do that. Also, that specific CTEK Battery Charger is a very good one, I have it too. It even comes as an OEM stock part with many higher-end cars, it's a very good investment.
THANK YOU Justin! Your style of presentation is so clean and concise and your calm friendly manner help remove any intimidation doing a DIY sometimes presents. The 7 year old original battery in my 228i sounded tired. I was going to have a garage pick out and install a new battery for me, but what a hassle just having anyone squeeze me into their schedules. I've always done whatever work I can myself anyway. On your advise I did pick up a BMW battery at a dealer. Also sent for a Carly which I had considered doing for a year anyway for the coding options. I'm heading outside right now so hopefully armed with your insights it will go seamlessly. Appreciate your great instructions!
Glad I could help and good luck!!
My original battery has lasted 9 years and has just know becoming hard to start. Thanks for the great video
94RAGM will also fit these cars. Should be a little smaller but there’s *usually* an adjustment for the bracket that holds the battery in place. All you have to do is register the battery as a lower Amp Hour rating. Won’t affect anything as long as it’s registered to the vehicle. Great video yet again man! I’ll never know why they make these batteries so damn heavy! 🤣
Nice video Justin! Glad you were able to get it sorted out. It took me a while to figure out my battery was the issue but once I replaced it the starts and everything back strong. Good job!!!
Thank you! Took your suggestion and went to the bmw parts department and purchased an oem battery!
Another great video! Handles on a battery in that location are essential! If the replacement battery doesn't have handles, consider using tie straps or two old belts!
Very helpful video Justin. Thanks for the effort. Sometimes the vent plug (that you mention below) is attached to one of the plastic terminal covers found on the new battery.
Good stuff. The car sounds much better now than before!
Just got a 2017 340i a week ago. Love the car so far.
Nice!!
Most satisfying battery install I've ever watched 😀 glad you got it sorted!
Thanks for the help 😎
@@justinbuice no problem!
way over engineered. as usual with most everything
Thanks for the info Justin! My E90 battery needs to be replaced too, so it was good to have this info!
Glad I could help!
My original bmw battery lasted 8 years. Amazing. Started getting fault codes on various things because of low amps. Dealership wanted to run diagnostics for 2 days to figure out what's going on. I put my foot down and said change the battery first. Clear all codes and then we will see. I was right.
Good video. I just had to figure out the battery access panel puzzle pieces today on our New to me E93. Very helpful for when I have to actually pull the battery...
I definitely need to change my E90 with an F30 so i can watch your video with more interest like the days you had e90. Hello from Romania ✌️
car sounds so good man!
Love the videos buddy. Could you share some details on why the battery cables get burnt on the F30?
Hi from Kenya, really looking into a Used 2018 M Sport F30, thanks for the consistency
Great video. Well produced and concise. Excellent.
Do you know whether you have too register the Auxiliary battery on a BMW 330e? The battery under the hood.
I had issues with autozone and oreilly when looking for mine, too. Even the dealer was out so I ended up finding the exact spec replacement by interstate at Costco! Been running strong since
They should really update their system. No doubt people are buying and installing underpowered batteries as a result
What car did you change it for ?
I was reading info on battery replacement in my 2016 3X F25 BMW and it said that the power can't be interrupted and to use a tool made to be plug in until the battery is installed so that none of the settings or data will be lost. I noticed you didn't mention that and wondered what your thoughts were.
good tuitorial, only thing I'd say is disconnect the negative first then start pulling out stuff and covering the positive. Only way you'd get the old welding arc is going across the terminals... not speaking from experience or anything
That's interesting, the stock battery in my 340i is 900CCA and manufactured by Banner of Austria (OEM supplier), I'm guessing the slightly higher CCA on mine is because it's a Canadian spec vehicle- although where you are it gets pretty cold too! ❄️
Super good job on this video! It's chill, informative, and super good production quality. Also helped me out a ton, so thanks!
Great video. Very informative and very well done.
Battery info and tools are listed in the description! Big thanks to my friend Austin for giving me tips for the install!
😎🤘
Excellent video man, very clear. Thanks and keep up the great videos.
glad I could help!
Top of the line explanation...thanks
Props on the tools, gotta love Wera's stuff.
They are great! They're like the Leica Camera of tools
Great video - very professionally done..
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR GREAT VIDEO.
Glad you got that taken care of babe! Video came out nice! (:
Hey Bruce! Just wondering what pressures you running on your batteries? Many thanks for the videos. 👍🏻
Wera sockets....nice! I use the same kit. Craftsmanship is outstanding.
Thanks for your post. Recently purchased a 2016 228i and the battery is due for replacement soon. Cheers from Shelby Twp. MI!
Glad I could help! From Port Huron :)
that's all I needed, So winter, charge. thank you, love your car G 😎😎⚔⚔
Been subscribed for years! Only now I realized your last name was Buice thought it was Bruce. Love your content! I’ve followed since I’ve had an e92, F30 and now I’m on a G30 now. Great videos!
Thank you! The "U" in my last name is silent so it's pronounced "B-ice" :)
Nice video. My wife's 2014 BMW is still on the original battery.
Thank you Justin !
Good info, I'd say though if you are careful you can get really good deals on batteries. A little over a year ago the AGM battery in my 2013 Audi allroad was starting to die over a couple of days (It was dated 08/2012. AGM batteries are really impressive). A matching H8 battery from VW/Audi was > $250. I was on the Audizine forums and found out an H8 Champion battery at my PepBoys was $189 (including core charge). Installed it last January, changed the serial number by 1 letter with VCDS, and returned old battery and payed 171 for a brand new AGM battery. I've had no problems.
I'd say do your research and find a good matching spec battery with a discount and you'll win big time. I haven't had any problems with my battery besides the few times I've left my OBDeleven plugged in overnight.
In my research, I found that most car batteries (BMW included) are manufactured by only a handful of suppliers, so I have no doubt they are all among equal quality/ longevity. I just had a hard time finding something locally.
how would i know if my bat is an h8 or h7??any way to tell..
Why are the wera tools so satisfying lol 🔥
Why are they so expensive 🥵
Justin, you do such a great job being detailed enough and without any unwanted extras or extra time in the video. Editing is on point! Clear, concise and straightforward! Keep up the great work! Love your channel!
Thank you I appreciate that! I make DIY’s the way that I would want to watch them 😁
@@justinbuice if you can't make a child understand, then what's the point!
My 2015 X5 just quietly died today in my garage. It has two batteries in the back. I watched your video and it’s helpful. In my case, should I replace both batteries? I searched and only saw people replacing the bigger ones. Thanks for any advices.
Great video! I will be needing a new battery for my F34 before winter. Thinking of getting one from FCP Euro or going to Pep Boys. My dealers ship wants a lot more for the battery and an insane amount for the install.
I looked on FCP Euro and didn’t see one for my car 😫
Great tutorial video👌
🙏🙏🙏
good clear information thanks
My e90s battery was replaced about a year ago by previous ownner. I see on the car log was not register any previous replacement, and the battery currently registered is a 90ahm agm while the battery in the trunk is a 95ahm AGm. What would you say i have to do now?
So much good information. I need a BMW so I can use it!😎
😆
Great video. Keep getting errors from Carly unable to register
Hey Justin for future reference Costco carries the battery for our car so if you have one local I put a H8 agm 900cca in mine and it paired up perfect! Matched up exactly to the factory battery!
FCP Euro dude. I replaced mine in August but found many online. I was lucky needed one very soon and found one at local part store same price you paid. Registered with MHD was easy. Don't forget to return core charge.
FCP didn't have a battery for my car in stock otherwise I would have ordered from them for the lifetime guarantee
I love the Flex!!!!! just wave the foot and the trunk opens lol
😆
Hi justin, does the 320i take the sane battery as yours? Also can i drive it around fir a couple weeks and then regisyer it? My battery's dead but carly will take 2 weeks or more to get to me.
Awesome video!
Hi Justin, That was a great video. I am told that the batteries on most BMW’s sold in India have a 15 volt battery and car’s software is lost w hen you remove the battery. This would mean that the software needs to be re-installed. Would you have a video on the latter?
did you change de battery without a auxiliar battery in front of car near de motor ?
I own a CTEK 7002 US, 7-amp, charger that I have owned for about 10 years. I use it on just about all of my vehicles. Sooo, the question becomes that someone said you should use a minimum 10-amp charger. Your thoughts? OBTW, I really appreciate your instructive videos!
You the man Justin, always great content thanks 👍
Got my replacement battery from Walmart for $175. It was a 95 Ah and cheaper than anywhere else by $50-60 bucks. Stealership was around $300 not installed.
Walmart is the only 4 year warranty I can find now. All the auto stores are 3 years and $100 more.
good information, but no mention of cleaning inside of pos amd neg terminals,or cleaning battery posts, before fitment.
Fellow Michigan man. Nice video, thanks!
Glad I can help :)
Just had to buy a battery for my 2014 F30. The battery used in this video is the correct one if it helps someone. Currently on sale for 335$ + 18$ + tax in Ottawa, Canada.
about the ctek charger: don't I have to disconnect the battery from the car each time before charging it? this makes it quite impractical, as I have to remove the coverings in the trunk each time and have to re-adjust the time and maybe other settings after reconnecting the battery to the car - quite tedious and time consuming...
Or are there chargers that don't require disconnecting the car?
My pcv diaphragm went ( has a tear in it ) so white smoke everywhere. Waiting for diaphragm from Ross racing so car is not running for days. Hooked up my black and decker battery charger to red terminal and negative ground under hood and pressed charge. Charged it for about 45 minutes or so. My 340i is a 16 btw….so I will need a battery like you. Assuming the 16 battery is same as 17? I hope you can charge our batteries from under hood terminals! Idk….but I did it. Anyhow how much is that Carly piece you plug into obd?
mine shows 12.2V thru bimmerlink on ignition mode too, do I need to change a new one?
Do you know if the Carley OBD2 scanner works with a BWW X5 f15 for new battery registration?
I honestly thought that finding a battery would be a lot simpler😅 This is definitely worth watching since it’s definitely going to be useful one day!
Hi, I had removed my battery and then had a recharged only for the car to basically discharge it. So I had it recharged again and I saw your video about the Carly app, so I’m gonna go ahead and purchase that, but what should I put on the setting because it’s not a brand new battery even though it was recharged. It’s supposed to be 900 cca but after the recharge it’s 521 cca , I wonder if it’ll go back to 900 once I run the car for 30 minutes after doing the procedure from 6:09 . The car had been standing still for a while and I had to remove the battery because I was fixing something.
Hey, great video! Was wondering how you find out all the torque specs? Is that in the bmw book you recommended?
Yes if you get something like a Bentley manual it has all the specs
Of more INTEREST, what actually determines that it needs replacement? looking to learn
with bmw it always better to have details of the new installed battery copied or a picture of it taken because during registration of the new battery sometimes it requires part number of the new battery
Savinggggggggggggg. Thanks for making this
Glad I can help :)
Hi Justin, as always you were rocking with this helpful video. Does this battery work for my 2013 Bmw 328i? otherwise please suggest the correct model. Thank you.
Did you ever get an answer?
I got a diehard platinum, which has 90mah.
Regarding the CTEK, i see there are different models, mxs 5, 7, 10. Is there any danger to go for the more powerful charger or does the charger know to not overcharge the battery?
I have a question I want to charge my battery as a last resort before replacing it .I want to charge it from the trunk.if I remove both terminals and hook up the battery trickle charger to the actual battery ? A lot of people post that you should charge battery from the engine bay but if I disconnect terminals from trunk I can safely charge the battery?
@Justinbuice Hi i got a question I'm programming my new battery & I'm using a Autel 906bt but it's asking for the matrix code which it has the barcode how can I get those numbers
I like to ad to this if you buying trickle charger and you have AGM battery you must use AGM capable trickle charger.
You cannot use regular charger on AGM battery’s
Mine lasted a long time but anything over 4 or 5 years I wouldn’t complain
What a pleasant video
Smart and good looking
Costco sells compatible interstate agm batteries at a good price and US made.
I have a 2007 750i and my battery is just now starting to die. It's a stock one too. Count me as surprised.😛 I just don't know if I want to pay dealer prices.
How has your experience with Carly gone? I am hearing mixed reviews about their battery registering process. I just want to properly register my battery that’s all. Are they 100% a safe source to use for this?
A little help Justin: I like your upgraded 340 BMW and I'm in a similar situation. Currently I have the 2011 328i and I'm looking to upgrade in the next year -- what would you suggest? I like my 6 cylinder non turbo, and I like that it's 4-door. Buying used of course, any good alternative come to mind based on what you've seen at shows or wherever? Great video mucho thanks!
Hey, all F generations 3 series are turbocharged now, whether you get a 4 cylinder or a 6. I don't have any personal experience with BMW's inline 4 cylinders, but some of them have known timing chain issues. Personally I'd be looking at either a 335i or 340i, both of which have single turbo inline 6's. F30 335i's have really come down in price, especially early model years (2012, 2013).
Get a b58, anything x40. I have f23 m240i. The engine is as bullet proof as anything bmw makes. Toyota puts it in the supra which says a lot.
Question . Why use vent hose if is BMW battery but if is other brand they said to plug it
Dealership quoted me nearly $700 to replace and code new battery. I'm having issues with the old battery and didn't recode it when I disconnected it
Banner ( Austria made) have 92/850 battery model
Great video Justin as always. How long did your original battery last?
The original battery was 5 years old
@@justinbuice same in my case. after 4 years in winter it showed first weaknesses. now after 5 years + few months display asks me to replace it.
I noticed A unhooked black cable in mine 328i 2007 wasnt sure if that needs be connected
will the iCarly battery registration work on my e90 2011 bmw328i? as well give me all the coding features iCarly gives?
Hi again, just a note I have talked to a couple mechanics, and they have indicated that its not necessary to register. How can we get the truth on this subject? the thing is that the IBS should track the voltage of any installed battery if it truly is intelligent and no need to tell the IBS or ECU that a new battery has been installed. and how would telling the IBS make it charge differently? some batteries last 4 years and some last over 10 years.
I'd heard about registering batteries with the car but didn't know why. Now I know.
Autel ap200 obd scanner for 60gbp works well with BMW. You can register new battery and do other stuff. Unlimited license for one car brand.
hey have you hear of a weak battery causing chassis malfunction and pedestrian warning malfunction?
Hey Justin, what version of Carly do I need to register the battery? Will the basic $80 version work just fine? Or do I need the “premium” version?
Thanks!
You need the Premium package. Carly is an annual subscription. The $80 is just for the adapter. if you select the Premium version, you get the adapter + one year of service for $119
