Thats because it is simple to make Games nowadays. There are Tools to make 3D Games, you just have to put Assets together, it is like Lego. Look at the Animations and Clipping Errors, how Yoshi shoots the Fireballs, he just bought ready to use Assets and used some Engine.
Another reason it's unlikely is because the model is so counter to the aesthetic of that game--i could believe it much more if the game looked cartoony and he had, like he said, "wanted to use a cute dinosaur character" that matched the theming But as is it looks hideous, so why bother?

So the deal with the translator of the Mario encyclopedia is that he’s a super nice guy irl and is a huge fan of a bunch of other franchises. The reason he “took” the names was because he had experienced official translations of other books/games call characters other names than what the fans were used to, causing divide in the fandom. In order to avoid this, he tried to make the fans happy and use the names that they’re ere familiar with. He’s actually very talented and has won many translation awards as well as written some original books that I liked a lot Edit: Probably should explain this better. He took names from the wiki because he thought that those were the names that the fans were the most comfortable with

Considering the popularity of the Mario series, you'd have to actively avoid having anything to do with Nintendo to not even slightly recognizing this character. Like if I took a picture of Yoshi, and showed a bunch of elderly people (Some of the least likely people to even play games), a good amount of them could probably at least trace it back to Nintendo.

I was sad hearing that Nintendo even went after Giana Sisters 2, it looked like a fun Mario inspired game, with notably different gameplay compared to all the bootleg ones that thrived. But I am shocked that I have never ever heard of them before.
