Great Journey, GTAce! Through Summoning Salt, Gaming Historian, Karl Jobst, Abyssoft, and others, I’ve followed some of your career with great interest!
One of my favorite parts about speedruns is that it’s a collaboration of two entirely different skillsets. On the one hand you’ve got hunters and TASers like Blazit and Kriller, discovering precise methods of breaking the game’s limits and then refining those into something a person can achieve. Then on the other hand you have runners like Saradoc and Darbian and Niftsky actually implementing those strategies back to back. Without both parties, these limit-breaking speedruns just can’t happen.

Records achieved using keyboards should not be allowed. I find it incredible how a community like speedrunners, who care so much about frames and milliseconds, still allow records set with keyboards. Something so specific and optimized, like these Mario records, should not be done using hardware that is not original. Every detail matters in these Mario records. Any small difference is crucial. The positioning of fingers on a keyboard is completely different from their positioning on a controller. Any advantage, like resting your entire hand on a table where the keyboard is placed or using two or three fingers to press buttons instead of using your thumb as on a controller, should be prohibited. People like to act technical and point out aspects where a keyboard is supposedly equal to a controller, claiming the input is the same. But that shouldn’t matter. There are other ways in which keyboards help players beat records, beyond just those technical aspects. I think this culture of equating keyboards to controllers has been created, but it’s just not true. If someone like Kosmic says anything negative about keyboards, he’ll be seen as a sore loser. No one has the courage to say it, but I find it ridiculous to see someone breaking records on a keyboard using an emulator, while people playing on original hardware are losing those records. It’s not the same and should be its own category. It’s ridiculous, period.
@umair5602 lol I used to play it off like I was the real one in college at bars and such. Early 2000s; just enought cell phones to verify what I was saying, but not enough to stream video disproving it
Brilliant video - That song "Last Minute" kicking in when Niftski was producing gold was yet another example of what makes your videos such a joy to watch Salt. Thank you for being in my life.
I love that summoning salt just calls out Bismuth and doesnt explain the "LOL beef", and I noticed how Summoning salt set up a chekhov's gun, by showing the FFPG earlier in the video. Amazing story telling Summoning!
Fun fact: The "Minus World" is actually world "Space", level 1 which equates to W36-1, as the space character is the 36th character as seen by the game.
@@b.clarenc9517 Yeah, back then we used to call it "Nothing dash one". I mean, when we talk about things like "1-1" we don't call it "One minus one" either.
can't help but wonder if Niftski's use of a keyboard (and presumably an emulator?) has ever been a source of controversy... it's even mentioned in the video that the FFPG was nigh impossible on original hardware so I was kinda confused when that never came up again
It has, yes, even in this very comment section. Yet no one can deny he's the savant of Super Mario speedruns, he's demonstrated his skills in original hardware before. Removing his keyboard would be like removing fight sticks from the FGC in some way.
The only people that complain anymore are the uninformed. Niftski tied one of his older WRs with a controller on hardware, so his skills are legit. And most high level smb1 runners think using a keyboard is actually a handicap with how you input directions.
Emulator is generally fine for smb1 because we have nes emulators that are essentially 1 to 1. I believe emu runs have to have hand/input cam and only certain emulators are allowed. His using keyboard is generally not seen as an issue by those involved in the community. He's demonstrated that he is still incredibly capable on real hardware and most runners agree that kb doesn't provide an advantage. Regarding ffpg on original hardware, as far as I understand it, it should be the same as on emu. It's just incredibly difficult. Take what I'm saying with a grain of salt though.
It was when he was new but once he cooked on original hardware people realized it's just personal preference also due to the forbidden gaming term it's simpler for someone to get into the game on emulator
That's cool that everyone's chill with his using a keyboard as a preference, but surely if it doesn't matter then he could prove it by matching, or at least getting within a few frames, with original hardware? Respectfully, that he was capable with a controller back in the day has no bearing on whether or not the keyboard has become an advantage to him in the time since.
ALWAYS top-tier reporting. And that intro/outro grove can't be beat. Takes one to know one, and this speedrunner also has some great cite and story-building writing.
Hell Yeah! It's as though the blooper knows it's not even supposed to be there, especially after Mario drops the axe! Then to be bonked! The Irony is palpable!

@umair5602 lol I used to play it off like I was the real one in college at bars and such. Early 2000s; just enought cell phones to verify what I was saying, but not enough to stream video disproving it
I had no idea this even existed.
Summoning Salt makes a 50 minute video about negative levels was not on my UA-cam bingo-card.
Summoning Salt should always be on your bingo card lol
(it's actually level 36-1 but 🤫)
@Xnoob545 shows how much I know.
Brilliant video - That song "Last Minute" kicking in when Niftski was producing gold was yet another example of what makes your videos such a joy to watch Salt. Thank you for being in my life.
Only in SMB can a literal 1-frame record be not just seen as possible, but actually done.
I love that summoning salt just calls out Bismuth and doesnt explain the "LOL beef", and I noticed how Summoning salt set up a chekhov's gun, by showing the FFPG earlier in the video. Amazing story telling Summoning!
can u plz explain
29:40 love the competetion spirit of Kosmic, acknowledging the effort of his competitors, and congratulate them when he was beaten.
Man that very first run already looks like a nearly optimized run just without many glitches, it's like we're starting halfway through the video
A New Summoning Salt Video What A Christmas Gift
I found you.
Fun fact: The "Minus World" is actually world "Space", level 1 which equates to W36-1, as the space character is the 36th character as seen by the game.
I too watched that excellent Kosmic video -- recommend it to anyone! ❤
Yep, I was hoping SS would mention it. And "Blank dash one" sounds better than "-1".
It was when he was new but once he cooked on original hardware people realized it's just personal preference
also due to the forbidden gaming term it's simpler for someone to get into the game on emulator
Takes one to know one, and this speedrunner also has some great cite and story-building writing.
the blooper getting bonked at 1:17 is fucking funny
Hell Yeah! It's as though the blooper knows it's not even supposed to be there, especially after Mario drops the axe! Then to be bonked! The Irony is palpable!
Justice for the blooper that gets killed at the end of every run.
RIP Tony
After every *full run. Most runs do not reach the end. This is something that watching ”end result videos” gets hidden in the details 😅
I must say that your videos are really captivating. Everything from the storytelling to the music is top notch. Literally gives me goosebumps. And you can really feel the excitement build up when new runners attempt for the record.
Thanks for all the effort you put in making these magnificient videos.
Greetings from Sweden
It's amazing how people keep discovering new things in old Nintendo games. It truly speaks to both the quality of the games and the dedication of the fanbase.
Super Mario Bros on the Summoning Salt channel
I sure do wonder if public transport will be used as an example for anything
I really love your current editing style, integrating the timeline graphic into the story. It really shows the full story while leaving room for the innevitable future.
Death, taxes, and summoning salt explaining the frame rule
It's very comforting to hear everytime
Dude I actually screamed "WHAT NO WAY" when he did this and died laughing after the reveal 6:58
Same, I yelled, "Whaaaaat!?!" In my garage lol.
It's delightful that Summoning Salt uploads a video right before my days off at work - watching THIS is the perfect way to relax. I can't express how much a video from you has become part of my "Comfort X" process.
I wasn't expecting a Summoning Salt upload but I appreciate it
27:35 That Kosmic clip on 2/26 missing that perfect pace run in the first 3s on -3 is absolute comedy lmao
Stopping the music as he paused is *chef’s kiss*.
I so enjoy these videos. I don't speed run or follow speed runs but this content is so well produced, narrated and nostalgic that I've watched them all and look forward to each new episode. Thank you.
I love how in some of your videos a 12 second gain is a small improvement, and then in videos like this the entire net gain in the entire speedrun is like 5 seconds
7:02 *not me checking the date to see if it was april fools in December*
will never forget the time you released one of these videos during christmas time a few years ago, thank you for doing the same thing this year again. I remembered how cozy i could be at home again. Merry christmas man
2:36 “I think Money is great!”
This is a nod to Ellie Spectacular’s YTP, isn’t it
It has to be. It’s an amazing hidden gem.
I don't understand my addiction to 100% Summoning Salt videos on day one release. Great work as always, keep on keepin' on!
I watch on 128000x speed so I can optimize my run
I love your videos because you frame a certain record or limit. When someone comes along and drops the record even further, you make it feel like players are achieving new power levels.
Only Summoning Salt can make an interesting 50 minute video about a record that went down by 17 seconds in its whole history
12:54 why did you do my boy darbian like this
That was wild
He's got a nose for sniffing out good speedrun strats
Thank you so much for explaining the "frame rule" in such an easy-to-understand metaphor
“And then Summoning Salt uploaded…. This!!”
fr lolololll
I was about to go to bed.....
Verified under 100k?
Yeah @@JamesPanoff
@samasayed-r4y did they hit 100k subs then go under?
“The Human Limit, was officially reached.” (20 Minutes left in the video)
Hey, I just found your channel and I have to say, I don't think I've ever been as engrossed in a video as I am now. Keep up the good work, you're amazing!
Most predictable summoning salt upload schedule
Imagine a bus that delivers new videos
Always got to get that late Dec vid out before new years
Dang he just dissed on my boy Boron with the framerule explanation at the beginning
Hey man don’t talk shit about Barium
How rude of him, Bohrium is one of my favorite UA-camrs.
I'm just a casual gamer with a proclivity towards retro games from growng up in the 90's. I'll never be a professional speed runner but I can't describe just how enjoyable summoning salt's videos are for me. They are the perfect video to listen to for relaxation and give me a warm contented feeling while listening to them
you are easily one of my favorite youtubers. keep up the great work man
Wow I can't believe Pooptamer69420 crushed so many records. Truly a runner of our time.
Finally gave Gas_Blaster_9000 some competition
Everybody gangsta ’till Minecraft Steve takes Kosmic’s world record.
'I jumped, holy cow'
- Kosmic, 2018
Time to eat more salt
So close to 2 mil subs. Congrats on all your hard work and thank you for the amazing content
3:36 ngl idk why but this is up there with "filmed on a camera from the 1800s" and the capture card joke.
Get the popcorn, get the drinks, let’s CELEBRATE!! NEW SUMMONING SALT VID IN THE MARIO SAGA!
I got chips and some drinks 🍺
Right there with ya enjoying great content!
21:45 "as long as he didn't do anything dumb"
average viewer: "he got this"
Summoning salt vet: *bated breath
Even if this wasn't a Summoning Salt video, I'd have clicked out of curiosity based on the title alone.
