As an Irish person I always have people tell me who the fairies are, who the gods/goddesses are and what Druids do and don't do (being one for nearly 30 years myself), yet i have never seen or heard anyone say or do these things here. Just the other day i was 'told' by two people (not from Ireland) what my culture and native traditions really are and that i was wrong (this was the notion that all fairies a good). When you tell them your culture they call you a bigot for not agreeing with them and there newage universal concepts, yet they reject your reality. Some ask for 'sources' (from a mainly oral tradition) and even when you give them a source they just ignore you cause its not what they 'feel' is correct.

I find it fascinating though frustrating that these folks tend to act as though they are open minded and yet do not listen to native voices nor do they read the stories and native sources. I am also a druid (draoí) and always make sure there is source for my practice whether in the ancient stories, accounts by monks and saints, and/or whatever native sources it is. I get so annoyed by folks who say that there is no account of the practices of the druids. So often do I hear that these stories are too christianized and yet I have had no problem sieving those parts that are so blatantly Christian out. Pure ignorance by such folk.

@@Seth_Cones I agree Seth, i am also told all-the-time that there are only classical sources for Druids and that they ended when Britain was taken over (leaving out Ireland). Early 'Celtic' Christians where more Gnostic and took over many Druidic roles only later becoming more unified to the 'mother' church (Vatican). Universal Christians and the Bitheism Wiccans often follow will always tell you that your deities are 'One' or 'Two' aspects of there deities without even asking what you believe. See the change in there faces when disagree with them.

Hey Lora. This is why I feel so lucky to be a student at the IPS, because this mess runs deep here in the US. It’s not just your average Pagan broadcasting this stuff. It’s coming from the more vocal and “respected” members of the community. Knowing what know now having watched your videos and being a student, I guess I’m just embarrassed at our whole notion of, “Well my great great grandmother twice removed was Irish, therefore I’m entitled to take what I want while spewing nonsense.”
So thank you for teaching those of us who want to learn and giving us authentic sources. It means a lot, and it’s greatly appreciated. Without you and your partner, we’d all still be mired ass deep in the Matthews and DJ Conway, to name a few.

I'm an American who has a heavy Irish heritage. Part of the reason I started following you on here is because I just felt that there was something off about the information I was getting from the sources made available to me here. I want to embrace my traditional heritage and honor it properly and I hope you don't see me looking to you as a problem. I hope if I do anything I at least help break the chain of ignorance and misinformation that is mostly spread by what a lot of the American pagan communities call "fluffy bunnies". People who take Paganism, mix and match their gods, and act like they are from the movie The Craft or from the plethora of Hollywood witch fiction thats been causing trouble for decades.

Thank you! As someone who has practiced animism for 30 + years and as someone who lives in America I stay pretty far away from others over here who practice "eclectic" Paganism for the most part. I have much respect for the recipes of our ancestors and not mixing traditions and deities with ones from different areas of the planet. As we know Shamanism is a Siberian word. But these days it seems to be used to describe anyone who practices animism in a similar way with spiritual journeying, psychic gifts, herbal or natural medicine, talking to spirits and the ancestors. While I do not think time/space limits what a person can do, at least keep it respectful and don't mix, some medicines and energies are not meant to be mixed. But one thing I think many American's do not understand is, to really communicate with the land spirits you don't try to talk to a stone in Ireland or Norway or some other place. You go out in nature and sit until you can connect with the nature that is right there with you. While I was born here, most of my ancestry is Scandinavian and Celtic and my family has only been here for two generations so some of the traditions were still alive in my family. In America there is so much missing as far as connecting with ancestral past. Most are not Native American and do not find they want to fit into that path--I certainly don't. Then you have these gate keepers from the old country telling you you can't practice or claim to practice "their way" because you don't live there, didn't grow up there. Calling anything we do "appropriation" when many times it is not. Since the ways of the ancient ancestors was an oral tradition it was not written down and what was written down was done so by Christians who tainted it with their perception of reality. So there is scholarly resources, archaeological finds, rune inscriptions, sacred sites and all this has led to the recreationism of different forms of Paganism. Even Pagans from the old countries are recreating Paganism. gatekeepers calling "appropriation" to anyone who doesn't practice a specific way is a misguided judgement. Cultural appropriation is using a minorities tools, art, words of wisdom from elders then claiming it as your own and charging money for it. However culture and spirits are not the same thing. You can not own the gods and goddesses, ancestors. If you think you can own the divine, and that the divine only belong to a small area of land then you are an atheist and racist. Not saying you are, it's just an example.

    • @ilspeth99
      @ilspeth99 Рік тому +4

On the topic of gatekeeping. It seems to me that there are many, many people in Ireland who either can’t or won’t accept that many, many Americans are either directly or largely descended from Irish ancestors. We’re a nation of immigrants. Having faced a lot of fairly aggressive shunning myself, the gatekeepers seem to want to deny me access to my actual heritage. The result can be, as I have witnessed and experienced, that you go it alone and try to understand your heritage with what you’re allowed to learn, or you say screw this absurd nonsense and start tracing other, usually much smaller bits of your family’s history. I’m not entirely sure that my Irish ancestors would approve of some gatekeeping behaviors because I am, in a very real sense, their daughter. I was born in the US. My great grandparents were not.

Off topic but I am wondering if I can get some help in being lead to the right direction. I've been looking to see if there are war masks/deities representations in masks in regards to Irish folklore. Many cultures have face masks depicting alot of their folklore or mythology, like the Thai with the Khon masks or Japanese Oni masks. Is there some sort of equivalent in Irish culture/folklore?

I'm from the US, and trying to find my building blocks of truth to find how to properly structure my path. And I find it troubling to find which places have the authentic information as my first thing that helped me see the kind of path was OBOD, and I currently find my spirituality to be a very Celtic-Druidic-faith heavily leaning towards learning celtic history and also a bit of a Fae Faith. I'm troubled about my lack of knowledge causing me to accidentally culturally appropriate, as I know I have british blood but have no clue how far that goes in which direction as I have yet to do an Ancestry-like DNA test. Can somebody here help reassure or inform me of how to properly pick the correct building blocks? I'm also looking to try and learn the most I can about all Celtic mythology and wish to learn as much Gaelic for using in Ogham as well for my spirital practices, but I am still trying to learn how to find the right practices from actually correct sources. I cannot stand the male domination of cultures and spiritualities all over and as a woman feel so troubled that the druid group I first really started to learn from probably isn't even an authentic source of information.

I’m not of Irish culture and would like to know if “Celtic shamanism” was simply a term invented by outsiders as an umbrella term for Celtic spirituality. I read somewhere that oral tradition has made it difficult (and some say impossible) to prove that such a way of life even existed. I find this all really confusing. I’ve only just started my journey into Celtic paganism and as a Cornish native seemed to make the most sense. But know it seems there’s a massive difference depending on whether you have Irish, Welsh or any other Celtic background, and that you shouldn’t try and compare Celtic paganism depending on where you are from. I’m not trying to steel any ones culture, but it seems I may have been mistaken to use the IPS as a source to help with my own path. Are the fundamentals for all these Celtic groups so different? Or am I going about this the wrong way?

As a fellow cornish born celt, this is a tricky one. As our old ways were quite effectively stamped out finding sources is tough. Turning to Ireland for information is natural as it is the closest surviving belief system to what the indigenous Britons most likely practiced. Start with the true known basics, the British celts were almost certainly animists, believed in reincarnation, believed in another world that lays next to ours. The Cornish have a long history with the Sidhe (I use an Irish term here as I find it respectful to the good folk) with many folk tales that have grains of useful information.

I feel like shamanism is the most profound term in explaining certain practices involving things spiritual and or healing from nature to kinda get into a few things of what people feel shamanism is. Similar sure but not the same thing I'm sure there's other cultures with different names for those people that may be similar to Shamanism or Druidism or whatever else is out there. Alot of things are classified as the same thing because explaining it to others can be difficult

I agree. We need solid terminology in order to discuss spirituality. I think we can do that while acknowledging the origin of the term being Siberian. The fascinating thing about shamanism is that ancient indigenous cultures all had some version of people playing the role of shaman which points to its natural and universal nature.

Lora and co give great research points and references and sources.
Also another chap who you should check out us Thomas Sheridan, he goes into detail on the megalithic and neolithic monuments in Ireland... He has his own personal views on them but he doesn't say you must believe them, he shows you how you can explore own ideas

I recommend you read The Celts a very short introduction, which explains how the Celtic people moved out from the mountains and how the culture developed in different ways across the continent and the islands.
It is a hard read sometimes because the author does keep insisting that the Irish are not Celtic, although i think that is more the Irish would not have self identified as Celtic until the mid 1800 (I wonder what happened then that gave Irish people a need to identify as a collective... uhhhmmm)
Other than that, it is a really good book about the Pan European Celts

    • @johnmcmahon9062

Its from a newage fallacy that the older something is the more 'Pure' it is. In popular Universal philosophies all come from the 'One' which can take the form of a God or even Aliens. Hence when the culture is taken away they have the 'Pure' and 'True' teachings, this is a form of cultural appropriation.

Hi Rose Stome, in Latin Paganism they have terms for certain followers of certain deities but not in Celtic or Irish cultures since they are more tribal. Druids where never called Priests/Priestess (this is a modren term) and the Gaelic translates into 'Druidist' (like Buddist) - they had priestly functions, performed magic and had many other various duties.

YES!!! 🙌 As someone who lives in Oklahoma (where the trail of tears ended and the natives were forced to live when America was being overtaken by colonists) I run into this issue with people so much. Especially in the recent years when spirituality has become kind of this mainstream thing? (I'm by no means complaining about that) however, it has lead to there being alot of ignorance spread about cultures: Such as people asking about "Mojo bags" when that is a closed practice in the voodoo and hoodoo practice...I have always disliked the use of the word "shaman" when people are referring to Celtic spirituality, let alone Irish spirituality. Because it is my belief that should be reserved for Native cultures out of respect for their culture. Not to mention there are other ways to express this spirituality.
All this to say as someone who strongly advocates for the minority and is also passionate about history, their lineage, and Irish paganism I can't express enough how much Lora's work has done for me. Living in the US there is A LOT of BS about "Celtic" spirituality, and often written by those who've never stepped foot outside of this country Or done any in depth looking into the topics they write about. No matter where I looked I felt I was only getting part of the story and history.
Thank you Lora for sharing your wisdom and know that there are people holding space for your culture and people even outside of Ireland! I'm here to sit down, be quiet, and learn! 💕

Both of my parents come from Ireland and I was born in America I was brought up with old school paganism, and have encountered so much crap here in America in regards to what they think is paganism. I once encountered a quote unquote Irish shaman who had a native American medicine wheel painted in the center of his drum and also had the nordish symbolism on the drum. And we kind of went back and forth and I told him there is no such thing as Irish shamanism and we don't have native American medicine Wheels or any symbol that's even remotely close. There is so much out there it's quite confusing people think oh paganism you mean Wicca, and even the new neo paganism is it's different than true paganism.

I'm dictating this to my phone in the car so forgive any typos there may be, but I think just by listening to this video I think I see where the problem might be? I listen to a lot of Native American stuff and especially from the Navajo or the danai I hear the same thing that Missy Brian is saying about cultural appropriation and misinformation being circulated as the truth especially among the newer Generations, I am scot-irish by Blood but not my Heritage, if that makes any sense, I was born and raised in Calif fornia and move to Arkansas in my older years. As Miss O'Brien says, stay in your own lane, I think that's where the problem lies! We don't have a Lane! We who were born here in the United States I just kind of floating without any culture whatsoever this big Melting Pot is such a mess and most recently with the snowflake culture were not even allowed to have our own culture because we can't have any Traditions we're not allowed it's not politically correct! Which is b*******! But I think that's where the problem is we're looking for our lane and when someone comes along such as those folks that you were talking about we jump on it because we think that's it okay we found our spot we know who we are now! But we still don't know who we are and that's sad!

I appreciate that you included the NA cultural appropriation. I always cringe when I see New Age "teachers" selling their philosophy that's a mishmash of other cultures. Heyoka Empath is a term that is a misappropriation of a Lakota cultural practice for young adolescent boys who have a certain dream and go through a certain behavior to gain perspective for a period of time but now it's been re-packaged for the "Empath" crowd and it's for a lifelong label everyone 🙄 I'm Hunkpapa Lakota like both of my parents but I recently found out while doing my ancestry on my paternal side that I have a lone Irish ancestor about 5 generations ago. I knew I had a couple of French ancestors on both sides but didn't know about some of the others.

I understand the fight for accuracy and avoiding contamination, but I think the "cultural appropriation" thinking is wrong. There is not such thing as pure culture, and culture doesn't diminish if shared, it actually grows, even though it might be different from it former self.
So I appreciate the efforts to keep culture as it was, but I don't think it's bad that new people see it from a different point of view, it's just another trend different from the original.

I have a solution for your problem. The politically correct term for people to use instead of shamanism in trance medium. Or trance mediumship. Whether you choose to call yourself a Celtic pagan, shaman, or a medium... stay out of other people's spiritual life and mind your own business. Worry about yourself instead of pouring gas on the culture war.
