Charlie is simply an amazing drummer. I first saw him when they opened up for Ozzy in 1988. I had never heard drums played at those speeds so effortlessly. And not just how fast he is, but the abilities that he has to play what he plays. And also that he is a composer an artist and has developed those skills to a high degree is awesome.

Charlie is one of my favorite drummers in metal and love that he appreciates other music and musicians like Dave Matthews drummer. Quick story: Back around '88 when Anthrax was touring with Ozzy, they came through New Haven Coliseum (demolitioned over 15 years ago). During Ozzy's set Charlie came out to the side of the security/press pit section located stage front. He hung there for quite a while digging Ozzy and his band and chatting with fans in the front row while smoking a cig. Back when he had big and long hair, ripped jeans, high top sneakers with the tongue in front of the bottom of the pant leg, t-shirt and denim jacket made into a vest. A lot of us local metalheads looked exactly like that back then, so much so it looked almost like a uniform especially when there was a bunch of us hanging out lol. Looking at Charlie now all clean cut, casually dressed and looking like he takes care of himself very well, you'd never know it was the same guy that was once upon a time under all that hair. Anyway, he comes off as a genuine decent, good human. He seemed that way back in '88 and to this day so he's obviously a pretty grounded individual and it's nice to see that he still loves what he does and can still pound the skins like it's still the 80's. And yes, Anthrax fucking kicked ass in New Haven that evening. They brought the noise and didn't let up the whole show. Geezer was touring with Ozzy in 88 so he was there and of course Ozzy's band was incredible too. Zakk spit a loogie up in the air to catch it when it came down but he missed and it hit his face lol. He rocked nonetheless. I was 14 years old at the time and snuck out of the house to go so...this show has a special place in my earliest concert memories.

Charlie Benantte and Dave Lombardo are the reason why thrash metal sounded so aggressive and powerful back in the 80s among the living and reign in blood were game changers for every aspiring metal drummer back in the day, and the last album that anthrax did was as if it came straight from the 80s , for all kings is my favourite anthrax album, I've been a fan since 85 , among the living was my favourite anthrax album until I heard for all kings, none of the big 4 have done an album after 2010 that was anywhere near as good as their early stuff, world painted blood was the last good album slayer did.

I play guitar bass sax, never cared for drums, till "Sound of White Noise" (Anthrax) Still don't know shit about drums but I started to pay attention to them.
Interesting that Charlie mentions Phil Rudd because they both are my favorite drummers.

Re; the blast beat comment - While I remember hearing jazz guys like Buddy Rich use them for small bursts, I think Charlie was def the first person to use it as a beat.

Love Anthrax and Benantes drumming. But he invented the blastbeat? Yeah, and my granny discovered quantum mechanics.... Charlie, you don’t have to claim this invention - you are a monumental drummer all the same😀

He didn't say he invented it, he just thinks that he is the first one to have it on an ALBUM, not a demo. That's all.
