Iggor Cavalera has been a major influence for many thrash metal drummers back in the day until their 1996 record Roots came out and the tribal rhythms took over in Iggors drumming style. Over the years he's opened up even more in so many musical directions while being a very humble person that it was quite an experience to finally meet him in Oberhausen in December of 2017.
This man taught me a lot in the 90’s. I mean a lot. This guy is a beast. I’ve looked for soooo many interviews on the internet on this guy & there’s not many. I wish he would do more cause he is a legend for sure. Even if igor feels he’s not. He is.
Beneath the Remains and Arise is two of the best demonstration that had iggor cavalera on drums.
He is a true legend. My favorite metal drummer. He beats the shit out of the drums. that’s just one of many things I like about him.
Same here. When i started drumming he was my biggest influence for a long time. Mostly because he wasn't copy pasting other people's style. His playing was very special and innovative back then.
Igor should be a name that rolls of anyone's tongue when talking drums. I love watching him punish the kit.
Igor is the reason I play drums today... Love his style..
Yeap and yeap.
Did you quit yet
@@behindthen0thing525 hellz no... Play everyday...
@@pnsmith2001 how are you progressing?
@@behindthen0thing525 it's a struggle..will never be as good as I wish to be... Being deaf in my left ear really makes things difficult sometimes....
Great Iggor. The man behind all the classics of Sepultura. \m/
I love that he added tribal sounding drums-game changer for metal.
I loved his work on ride the lightning
Without Iggor i wouldn't be a drummer at all. He don't jerk off over the drum kit as many guys do nowadays, he plays with heart and soul, and you can feel the difference, its crystal clear.
the man just doesn't need to prove anything to anybody there's a long time...he just want to have fun doing what he loves. wisdom rather than need for self affirmation.
@Lightbringer playing with more patience doesnt mean you can't do it
I saw nailing Stronger than hate last year
He did all , but more with experienve
He was really good on ride the lightning
To me, Iggor is a legend.
Same
Great that he found his own style and is enjoying his music. Having said that, Beneath the Remains and Arise remain his best work for me.
Absolutely.
Arise is one of the greatest thrash metal albums of all time.
@@iamcornholiothegreat If by Arise you mean Schizophrenia or BNR then yes
Schizophrénia is one of my favorite
Yup. He needs to stop being lazy and do it again
Read the comments after seeing the interview and I loved seeing so many people inspired by Iggor. Him and Nick Menza are my biggest influences and the reason I became a drummer.
I think Igor's best work was on the black album
@@macman316 thank you
@@behindthen0thing525 I think he did better work on master of puppets just like Menza's best work was cowboys from hell, nice try though.
@@macman316 pretty sure Dave mustain played drums on arise
Malibog ako
Incredible drummer. Love his work
Drumtalk, you covered most of the drummers that have influenced me in my 30+ years of drumming so far!
good to hear that, same here!
now get inspired by the other guys in the programme :-)
Organic drummer. Playing with his heart instead of a learnt technique. Awesome.
Max and Igor...MUSIC HISTORY....REAL SEPULTURA...thanx lads...
Iggor..what a nice bloke, huge influence for me since starting drums at 14. Iggortech is godzillaaaaaaa
I loved his work on rust in peace
I'm a bass player, not even a drummer but, I could listen Iggor talk for hours... Just wow!
The biggest thing any new drummer should take from this (and I hope new drummers, not just Iggor fans, are watching)... is that you have to find your own way of expressing yourself, and for that matter, even playing the drums. John Longstreth said it perfectly in his episode that people shouldn't be talking about how to do something "right" or "wrong" but finding the way that works best for them to allow them to execute what they hear in their heads.
Once you drop the shackles of feeling like you have to emulate someone else's playing, then you will began to progress as a drummer. Now, of course people should *try* to emulate others... for the sake of learning more about themselves and learning different techniques, but at the end of the story, it's about the individual, unique drummer you have become, and the style you have developed along the way.
If someone can identify you from your drummer, then you've succeeded. Otherwise, you've just become a good cover drummer.
Iggor Cavalera, Mike Bordin, Dave Lombardo, Nick Menza, Sean Kinney.. Huge "band" drummer inspirations.. Thanks for this interview!
yeah man! Mike and Sean are the shit as well -- maybe Sean one day -- Mike is not really interested in doing these video things unfortunately
Definitely Mike Bordin. I listen to a ton of prog and tech bands with drummers that play complex and crazy stuff, but Mike's drumming with FNM (My all time favorite rock band) has always stood out to me. No bullshit, just great grooves and power.
Iggor Cavalera and Vinnie Paul are my two favs. Vinnie used to go on about drummers filling the bars with a million notes, and how it didn't have any power. So true. Music is about what you don't play just as much as what you do play.
In graphic design you call that "white space" and it's so important.
No-one could hate Igor. He’s a massive influence on my playing
Great freaking interview..great insight of his drumming..was into his drumming since Remains..thank you..🤘🤘🤘
Never clicked so fast on a vid. Iggor is an absolute monster. Drum talk you are the best. Any news on getting Mario Duplaintier on the show? I remember seeing you guys reply to comment once saying you were going to try and get him on
already done that. it's gonna be featured in [season 10]
Fantastic. Can't wait for the Pete Sandoval one too!
Yay!
drumtalk YAAAAZZZZZZZ!!!
Great video and Igor had such an impact on my drumming especially around beneath the remains and arise.
Iggor is legend. And something else...Hetfield has said that was like he wanted to play drums on guitar. And this makes Hetfield and Max such great rhythm guitar players
i just say igor cavalera is a great metal drummer and also max cavalera and james hetfield are very good guitar players....better now?
Thank you so much for this interview. Igor is one of my favorite drummers of all time and I’m glad I got to actually relate to all the things he’s said.
Ladies and gentlemen, the most underrated drummer in metal.
he was considered #1 back in AD Era ...
Underrated? By whom? When? The only grief he may have gotten was with Roots, and that was only brief.
SpikeFlea I never see him on any top ten lists. Go check. UNDERRATED.
Definitely under rated. The best ever. The only people who come close is the drummer from dead dog face, blue junk heap, kitchen abortion, nick barker, and Dave Lombardo ( he keeps the percussion scarred. Snafu forever.
Yo yo check da terra cause I bring a violent era. # The Phoenix rising
Cool interview. What a humble man Iggor is. But so powerful on the drums!
one of the legendery old school thrash drummers.....the best drummers ever....most of them self taught with passion and feeling that no teacher can teach...
Iggor is a monster drummer and a very soulful, generous individual. Thanks for this video!
Watching this was very inspiring. Iggor is the reason i started playing drums. No matter how fast or slow he plays, his power and style are what appealed to me so many years ago. I learned how to play by air drumming to the Sepultura dvds. He will always be my favorite drummer.
his English is almost impeccable. Just one of the many talents this man has.
For me, Igor and Dave Lombardo are like the Mitch Mitchell and Ginger Baker of heavy metal: they defined a genre and took fast and aggressive drumming to a new whole level. Both have latin roots, and even though such latin roots are more notably on Igor, if you watch and leasing closely to Lombardo's early Slayer beats (for example to Chemical Warfare and Postmortem and most of his snare drum fills), you can taste that latin percussion. Both amazing drummers and human beings. Sometimes I wonder it they really understand how monumental and transcending their playing was for metal.
You can hear mitch mitchell in snare hit hat stuff for dave
I love Igor Cavalera drumming, full of stile, the albums with Sepultura of Max are masterpieces
Awsome! great drumming and philosophy, keep doing what you love!
Great Igor, great ispiration for any drummers!
Yep one of my favourite drummers. Learned heaps from watching this legend and this interview incites valuable knowledge. Interesting about the 20 inch kicks.
Please do a drum talk with Dale Crover
Very inspirational talk!!! Love you Dude!
Maaan... amazing talk, thanks for sharing your points of view from drumseat
This Man simply changed the rules of drumming in metal. All the little bells and splashes you here in metal nowadays you can just thank him. 💯
I can relate to Iggor on so many levels. Great video.
Probably my main inspiration in drums, don't like the current state but I have a lot of respect from what he does in the past, nice interview!
Yeah, I agree! He was amazing back in the day with how he incorporated all these cool tom patterns to metal and these small details that made the songs very interesting even in the long run. These days it seems like he has simplified his style and even the way he plays the old songs to almost just playing a beat.
The clips from the show, there were a lot of those cool snare grooves missing in the songs. In my opinion, way too simplified, because to my ears, there's less of the groove that I always loved about Igor's style.
Igor is awesome..He's been one of my biggest influences as a drummer...the first time i heard sepultura, it hit my soul instantly...LORD JESUS BLESS YOU ALL
He did his best work on vulgar display of power
One of the best to ever do it. just listen to the drumming on To The Wall
Schizophrenia is an amazing album
Seen Return to Roots and saw Beneath Arise last week, they're still killing it and by the look of it, enjoying it too! ❤🤘
That Toms Perspective, I learned something !
Excelente entrevista!
You guys featured and covered pretty much most of my personal influences. For a drummer who started in 1989, Iggor was without a doubt a huge influence. Thank you drumtalk!
Iggor is the Inovator of thrash drumming esp the Arise album. \m/
Such a chill guy, epic drummer, he delivers...Come on to Canada, the tribe awaits!
Def one of my fav drummez
great episode
iggor thanks . chaos a.d. first time I heard I can say the feels the album gives is still the same! GOLD
A nice personal life story and experience, it changed my opinión about Iggor as a human being.
Well I will try to make me understand in english, I love drums and I find your channel Yesterday and I`m Hypnotized with it, I love the way you conduce the enterviews and I really love hear the respect what the drummers have for her instrument. thanks a lot for that amazing content do you got a New suscriptor and fan from Colombia.
thank you so much Motografus! I'm happy about each and every positive feedback, but it's folks like you who take the time and write nice such nice words like you did here. much appretiated and I'm glad you get something out of those videos! thanks man
great interview! very interesting, and I'm not even a drummer. Igor has a great drum style and I agree with his point about emotion over techicality.
Legend.
Positive vibes do Brasil Igor!!!
Um grande abraço direto do Brasil !
All the old Sep and all the Cavalera Conspiracy stuff is great.
Roots and chaos AD are among my top albums of all time
I love Igor Cavalera drumming, full of stile
Love you igor. I will always cherish the two shows I helped produce in 1990&91 I will never forget eating dinner with you max Paulo, Andreas in Gallup NM on arise tour. Also sepultura obituary snafus tour! What a time to be alive I was 17 18 living the dream!!!
No one cares,
They didn't have a good time with you.
I love the way his "floor tom" is right in front of him
Edit. Big drum in front floor tom left if hi hat
thanks
Congrats for the amazing interview and for the amazing job so far, but...
PHIL SELWAY EPISODE PLEEEEEASE
Legend!
Iggor is my favorite Drummer i got a broken drum stick from a cavalera conspiracy show in 2008 that he gave it to his daughter so she could give it to me. Its one of my treasures as a sepultura fan. thats the only one show ive seen Iggor
He speaks english with no accent wow and he was born and raised in Belo Horizonte Brasil ....Brazil is awesome
While Max still have his accent
Grande Igor!!!!.
Eso me hizo reflexionar mucho, encontrar aquello en la bateria que te siente mas comodo para tocar
Legend
My idol 🖤
I only leave positive comments! I am not a drummer. I love this channel!
much appretiated!!!
You suck. :-P
pwned!
Igor Cavalera grande figure 🇧🇷 essentielle du Métal
The first cavalera conspiracy record is great. I wish he would play more like that.
Respect
Awesome video, cool edit also!... It would be amazing if you do an interview w/ Raymond Herrera. He's out of the spotlight since '09 (w/ Arkaea), but he was part of the beginning of a new style in metal when he was in Fear Factory. Thanx!
thanks! I would love to chat with Ray, however he's not touring anywhere, not sure if he even still plays drums. So I don't see that happen until he's back on the road touring Germany
The last I heard, he hasn't played drums for ages. He's busy managing his various businesses.
He'll be back! Those machine legs of his can't be contained for much longer!
The most recent appearance of Ray that I know about was in 2015 as a guest on the song Revolution by Black Oil... (/watch?v=9_Llv-QJfYA)
I always loved that tribal drumming that iggor brought to the table. I my self like to incorporate some of that in my personal drumming. In my book Iggor rocks!
Btw did you guys in drum talk ever caught up with Vinnie Paul?
unfortunately not although I tried many times
drumtalk thanks anyways
Does anyone know which snare drum did he used on Chaos A.D. , one of the best sound for me
Tama starclassic. The same one he used on reinventing the steel
Igor é o melhor porra.... Brasil!!!
On sepultura he goes non stop on the toms all the way through it is bad ass, like he said he put one tom right between his legs, watch old sepultura vids
At the moment i'm typing this, there are 6 dislikes😲...wtf...everybody is free to like or dislike, but in my opinion a dislike is IMPOSSIBLE! Igor, one of the heroes i grew up with🥁🤘
when you go out in the open you have to accept that there is always negativity regardless of what you do. I work so hard to make these videos without getting anything in return but the chance to have spoken to great people. and those comments here on youtube. and my guests are so generous and open up, tell who they are and let us participate in their experiences. these are priceless lessons of art and life. then some douchebag hits the thumbsdown button. I have no answer but "it is what it is". people on the internet tend to be assholes. period. I'm glad for every person that gets something out of these videos. the others don't matter
He looks great too.
We shall arise!
You want to catch the real groove? "Beneath the Remains" will make you a believer !
IGGOR CAVALERA DO BRASIL!!!
The man is a monster.
Any chance you could get Darkside?
Hell yeaaaaaa IGGOR!!..!ROOOOOOTS.... #TRIBE
Its all about that heart and soul. From the moment I first heard Sepultura I wanted to drum!
“Check, check, check, one, chew, one, chew…”I love Brazilians…
Igor Cavalera is a bad ass.
Master!!!!!
A Sepultura song without Iggor is like a beer with no alcohol.
Back then when he quit was big deal for Sepultura, but nowadays with Eloy Casagrande on the drums, not really
@@milhouse777 Eloy is a great drummer but he lacks the grooves that Igor had.
MASTER.
"too much coffee or energy drink..." ok... well thats one way of saing it :D
Please make an episode with Matt Greiner that would be dope
What kind of cymbal ride is that?
Notice in the beginning when he mentions his bands he been in he never mentioned sepultura 🤔
Igor is the Maradona of drums
