Someone is going to come in second, someone is going to come in third, someone is going to come in last. Necessity is the mother of invention, and private equity is a possible next step. The Big 12 is going to have to get creative.
The best thing the Big 12 has going for it is that no one wants their schools . . . YET! That creates stability . . . for now.

John: the posts that suggest Private Capital has destroyed everything it’s touched is simply an intellectually deficient argument. Consumers are already happily purchasing products and services started and funded by Private Capital for decades and frankly centuries. Vanderbilt didn’t build the railroads by himself, Rockefeller didn’t fund the oil boom by himself and so on and so on. Costco wasn’t funded and built by itself, same with Amazon, EBay, McDonslds, Burger King, Hersheys Chocolate, Birdseye frozen food and countless other entities we all enjoy in our every day lives.
People commenting based upon a political slant engrained in them from their media biases/preferences as opposed to actually being educated on said topics.
    SMH… that’s America today.
Thus loses solely at the feet of ESPN/Fox/CBS/NBC.

Not all are good capitol. Private Capital is okay, but Private equity is the key word here. That is different from private capital. The Private Equity firms are more like loan sharks and are predators. Oklahoma State, Louisville, Memphis and Boise State have private capital donors that bankrolled their football teams. Oklahoma State from T Boone Pickett's family. They are trying to buy themselves into the SEC. Louisville have Kroger grocery stores backing them. Memphis have FedEX who did after the Big 12 money for FedEx sponsorship for the championship game in football if they invited Memphis which the Big 12 did not. Major mistake there on the Big 12 part which could have added more millions into the pot. Boise State is funded by the donations of the family who founded the Albertsons grocery store name. Albertsons and Kroger have merged. That makes Boise State and Louisville related schools by the donors from corporate sponsors.

All BS! Nothing is going to kill College Football. The Big will choose it's own future, and that choice will be made freely.
What we are looking at here is the reality of a free market. The metrics of the Big schools is second tier. It is just a fact. So their finance options are commensurate with their tier. If the Big chooses to attempt to compete with the tier one leagues there will be a price paid for that choice.
Personally, I wish they would accept their tier and be the KING of it.

  • @Spitfirethedragon

Oklahoma State have the T Boone Pickett oil money and look where they are at? Memphis have the backing of FedEX, and FedEx offered the Big 12 money to sponsor the Big 12 Championship games if they invited Memphis in. FedEx could take that money and offer ACC money to sponsor their championship game if they invite Memphis at a reduce rate which would give the ACC more money to play with. Boise State does have the backing of the Albertsons family who the grocery store chain was founded by The Albertsons family. Boise State and Louisville will be sister universities since Kroger and Albertsons are merging. Louisville could ask the ACC to bring them in as will to infuse the Albertsons money into the conference as well. Big 12 made a mistake not inviting those Boise State and Memphis into the conference because they have two national corporations backing them. I blame the presidents for not acting on those two schools when they invited the other 4.

Oklahoma State got all of that money before it was legal to pay players. If they had been able to use that money to pay players rather than build a new stadium, they would have bought every player they wanted. College football is now professional. That means the players are going to go where the money is. The days of tradition and fan base and location mattering are over. The teams that win are going to be the teams that have the most money and coaching staffs competent enough to use that money. Yeah, money isn't everything. You still have to have a good coach or you end up being Texas A&M. Money and coaching are now the only thing that matters.

To the fans of the "smaller brand teams". YOU may be a diehard fan that cares about your team and college football, but your team's college administration doesn't. If it did, then your team would have more money for it's football program and your team would be good. And since your boosters don't donate to their athletic program as much as other schools, that just means that even your alumni don't care much for your teams football program either.
