EXPANSION: Florida State Using B1G as Leverage for Better ACC Deal?

  • More college football expansion talk: Is Florida State Athletic Director Michael Alford using the Big Ten as leverage to get a better deal to remain in the ACC? Or does FSU still want out of the ACC at all costs and therefore position the Seminoles for an upgrade to the Big Ten Conference? We will explore the numerous options and lay out some key dates coming soon.
    WE THINK FSU WILL…
We still think the latter is the preferred destination, however anything and everything is on the table at this point. Afterall, we are talking about more than a half billion dollars at stake. We will run through the numerous options for schools like Florida State, Clemson and numerous other ACC schools that might be interested in joining the expansion Big Ten and be major forces in college football realignment.
    RECRUITING IN FULL SWING
Current Big Ten football schools are in full swing for recruiting the class of 2025. More major news at Michigan, Nebraska, Rutgers and Indiana is all right here. Plus, we have evidence that spending millions of dollars on facilities seems to help recruiting. Everyone, though, seems to be playing catchup to the Ohio State Buckeyes as Ryan Day and company have the consensus number one recruiting class in the country.

I would have to make an adjustment on that my Nole brother.
The fans want that... I would estimate a little over half, after the snub. Before the snub the general fan base was overwhelmingly in support of joining the SEC.
I am now going into my 22nd year as a Florida State booster and I am blessed to have worked my way up to Platinum level.
Several of my fellow boosters and friends, especially those who understand business, still feel like the SEC is the best fit for Florida State and has been since the 50's.
Even though I strongly support this the most important thing is we get out of the ACC.
If that means joining the Big ten, so be it.
But growing up as a southern boy in Pensacola Florida, I grew up watching SEC football.
I think any Seminole fan that grew up within the SEC footprint should ask themselves one question. That is once Florida State was done with their game, who were you tuning in to watch? Ohio State? Michigan? Penn State? Maybe. Or... Was it any team in the SEC over those programs. Certainly not if you grew up in the '70s, '80s, or early '90s. If you're honest with yourself I think you're saying SEC.

FSU fanboy here who enrolled as a grad student at FSU in 1975 and lived through the Bobby Bowden glory days in football there. I was an academic scholarship student and choose FSU due to it's strong academics in physics (Paul Dirac was a prof there at the time; hard to beat that). Due to the strong physics program and solid pols FSU was able to land NSF big bucks to construct and house the strongest magnet in the world at the FSU Mag Lab which attracts CERN guys all the time. But enough nerd talk, lets get to football. FSU never was a good fit in the ACC and joined to upgrade it's basketball program. In more recent times FSU fans have been griping about bad calls from ACC zebras, something I have to say has some merit. The playoff snub last year and Boo's failure to advocate more strongly for FSU was the straw that broke the camel's back. Well before last year it was obvious FSU was the ACC team getting the most eyeballs even with Clemson's recent success. Bottom line is for some time FSU has been at odds with the ACC over multiple issues and has no desire to stay.

The only way possible to leverage something is to actually have a signed contract. Otherwise, there is no leverage! So, Florida State and Clemson are risking a lot in suing the ACC without anything to leverage for the future. This is called a blind call option when you are betting a future that you hope will happen against the media rights of the ACC. Let me know if this works for you! Right now, everyone knows who has been watching that Florida State and Clemson are in a lawsuit with the ACC and they are doing everything possible to get out of it. Let me know if you honestly think that such a move would be desirable for any other athletic conference in the United States to have the same thing happen to them if their member schools have an issue with their conference? Conference realignment is sticky stuff! You never know if the SEC or Big 10 or Big 12 will lose media rights revenues in the future or if media rights companies won't be able to fulfill on their legal obligations to pay athletic conferences in the future. So, there are all kinds of risks, mergers and acquisitions of schools in and out of conferences, and infuriated fanbases that can decimate media rights projections. It is a very dangerous game that is being played right now.

The Big 10 gets what it wants ( Florida St) and probably Clemson as the running mate to improve football and Big 10 TV footprint and the SEC gets what it wants ( UNC) and probably UVA (although don’t dismiss Kansas) for hoops, improved TV Msrlet footprint and academics.

FSU would love to leave as long as a negotiated exit price is doable. As a result of this bluster, ESPN does indeed need to decide to keep the ACC hostage or make the money right with the current market value. The smart play is to keep the court battles going until ESPN has to make it decision. If ESPN pays up then the ACC will continue on, if not then I hope the negotiated settlements aren't too high so my Tarheels can bolt. The biggest hurdle to ACC survival is a cash strapped media industry. The ESPN/SEC deal nearly broke ESPN, which is why the PAC12 imploded due to ESPN's penny pinching. The real question is how deep the ESPN pockets are, it may be better for them to ditch the ACC and consolidate the brands to the SEC product. However, the run the risk of losing a few brands to the BIG and FOX. We will see, but it's at least a year before anything breaks.

    • @davidbrown386
      @davidbrown386 3 місяці тому +1

The best thing we can use is history. You are correct with ESPN and the PAC. They were able to get 4 schools into the Big XII & 2 into the ACC, but most importantly, they were willing to sacrifice the most important non LA brands ( UO & UW) to Fox & the Big 10. Which tells you they are willing to do the same with Florida St if necessary. One other point; We will get the answer before 1 year. The opt out date is 02/01/25: ESPN has three options. 1: Sign on until 2037 as is. 2: Walk away. 3: Renegotiate with the ACC. Option 3 is most likely, but they know Clemson & FSU are not signing on for less $. Florida St might not sign on no matter what. Will UNC? What about ND, UVA, Miami?

@@davidbrown386 I think if ESPN offers a fair market value and with the uncertainly of the legal outcomes then the ACC will survive into the near future. Barring a legal outcome that reduces the buyout amount significantly then ACC keeps all current members in that scenario. IF the buyout as currently projected 500+ billion stands then that would negate any move by any member for any a reason for a considerable time. So with the legal uncertainty and if ESPN ponies up the cash, then the ACC members would jump to approve the better deal. The ball is in ESPN's court, I just hope the 2 Mega Conferences are ready for the whirlwind if ESPN chooses to blow up the deal.

When fsu started beating the hell out of sec schools they went to the acc while the sec wanted them then. Currently, Disney is at war with the state of Florida so there's bad blood with ESPN. Disney snubbed fsu from the playoffs. The university of Florida has and will continue to fight fsu entry to sec. Fsu has lately invested millions into academic research facilities to receive AAU accreditation. I have given this matter considerable thought, study and consideration. First the ACC is full of it if they think the value of their rights is over $500m. And that "look in clause" is an "option".
There are only a couple big games in the ACC in any year and none on the level of the SEC or Big 10 offerrings that would ever compel ESPN to fork over more cash. Clemson is taking a good approach by forcing rulings on the GOR that may set up binding arbitration. Get outside parties to evaluate the contract (I'm betting its 1/3 to half what the ACC is pushing), pay the money and get out.

The ACC doesn't (now didn't) have to get the same as the SEC/B1G, only close enough to remain peer and competitive. When one looks at the three remaining de facto Tier 1, the general differences are interesting:
B1G - High academics and large fanbases but low population growth
SEC - Low academics but large fanbases and high population growth
ACC - Smaller fanbases but high academics and high population growth.
Higher academics mean higher media value per viewer. The B1G has likely reached its highwater mark. The SEC cam improve its academics by expansion and increasing selectivity. An intact ACC would have been the best long-term investment.

The problems are: 1: The length of the ACC GOR ( and the lower $ amount). 2: The “Bridges Have Been Burned” ( at least with FSU). 3: Most schools in the ACC prefer basketball ( or other sports ( like BC hockey)) to football.
