I buy a lot of whisky at auction in the UK (not Springbank as I have my contacts to buy at retail price) but when I asked them what is driving the Springbank boom they have mentioned that a significant proportion of the buyers are from China.
We have been saying springbank is undervalued on this Chanel for years. After a while others caught on of course but this recent boom where it tripled in price overnight has to be big money/china like you said.
Real talk. Im glad i stocked up on 21, 18, 15, 12 and 10 too now lol. Crazy whats going on. I love the 21yo but the dark version of 18yo (2021 release) is my favorite so far. Thanks for another cracking vid guys.
The older tall bottles of Springer 21s are unmatched. I’m happy people are buying the new ones for 1.2k and leaving the old ones alone. Their prices have not appreciated as stupidly as the new Springers.
At this point im thinking of selling my recent (golden label) Springbank 21s, the 2016 single casks are going for 1700-2000 pounds....and use that money to buy some older ones that are almost the same price now! Only 3 years ago (when I started my whisky journey) my local store had 3 Springbank 25s for 400 pounds... I kept buying other (cheaper) bottles to learn more about whisky and to develop my palate thinking I was not ready to try such an expensive whisky...the weeks have passed and when I wanted to buy one it was already sold out. 3 years later now, after trying/buying soo many good whisky (some at the 400 pounds price range) I'm still at a point again where I'm not ready to try such an expensive whisky. I wonder how I'll see things in 2025..! :) Thanks for another great review!
I hear you and always frustrating to feel like you missed out but I assure you we have all experienced that many times through the journey so dont let it get it to you. Go at your own pace and just enjoy the journey at your speed. Cheers!!
interestingly only 25% sherry has been used in this expression and rest are Rum, Bourbon and port. Bought two bottles when it came out at TW for 400$ each and when I opened my first bottle though it’s little bit too expensive for what it is. Now I don’t think I have guts to open the second one or any of my 25 year old. About secondary prices it’s both raise in popularity and big money from China. I remember even a year ago I used to post pictures of my Springbank in a Bay Area Facebook page and ton of people telling Springbank is overrated, same people now hunting and drinking Springbank.
Springbank and port can really come out like sherry. Ive experienced this many times now. They must use some interesting port casks. I hear you on how it gets much harder to open bottles when they explode in value. Everyone will want springbank now lol
Still never seen the 2021 in the states, got mine in the UK. Still think the 2019 is my favorite. This is a close second. Thankfully the US secondary isn't following the UK auctions so far. I have no idea what's going on with springbank, but investors are for sure screwing consumers right now and springbank needs to find a way to fix this.
Ya the 2021 is not here yet. Nice grab from the UK as they are getting much harder now as you know. The 2019 was the most "Springbank" like from modern releases for sure. Ya the big money/china is not buying from US secondary but people here will start to fomo and go higher and higher with their offers if the auctions don't slow down.
@@maltreviews well I just sold 3 of the local barely sherry bombs.......I didn't even consider the UK prices, bit it was for someone I THINK will drink them.
Nice review guys. Good timing as I'm going back and forth on getting this 2020 bottling and the 2020 bottling of the 25 year old locally. Respectively going for 550 and 1050 plus tax. The Frankenstein blend of the 21yo had made me hesitant. Btw, the local barley 16yo at SWA that concluded on 4/10 went for 2800 usd landed, crazy.
Thanks! Ya in terms of value I would go for the 25 since its exploding in price right now. Ya I know, not sure whats going on but something smells fishy with the explosions' in prices overnight.
Sorry to disappoint but 30% bourbon, 30% rum, 25% sherry, and 15% port casks. best left in the glass at least 30 minutes then it unfurls and escapes the initial sherry blanket
Great review! Haven't tried the 2020 release, but waiting on a 2021 (retail) that should be arriving any day. Have you tried the 2021? If so, how does it compare to the 2020? I heard the '21 was a little more balanced, and the Port influence pairs nicely.
Great video! The way you describe it, it's a guilty pleaser.
This was a great release of the 21. I hate selling whisky at any price. 😉
I hear ya bud!
Sounds great, but a little pricey for me. Great review.
Great review guys. Funny - as soon as I saw the color I was certain that it had to be the 2021 edition with 1/3 port. It just looks so red.

Great honest review lads! Interesting insight into Auction prices…
Thank you!!!
I’m always in the mood for springbank 😉
100% man! Your sample was the first time we tried this one. Thanks again!!!
@@maltreviews my pleasure!! You guys are the 💣 💥

Smart man!! Im hearing great things about it. We decided to skip the 18 this year but will try to find one now. Thanks bud!
Wow that's very dark 😁
Nice review. Love Springbank. I’m heading to Campbeltown and Islay next year. Can’t wait!
Thanks Cato!! Sounds amazing!
Great vid as always guys! Hahah you're absolutely right, you'll be springing for a new bank if you buy anything from the distillery now
Thanks Bud! LOL

Yes, but I managed to get a dark batch of 1998 release for 4 to 500 five or so years ago.
Ya its crazy. Older 21s still undervalued

luckily got two of them! havnt opened yet.
Nice!!!
I felt it didn’t deliver as well at my expectations held it. Agree with the scoring totally.

If it goes for 1000 bucks i could maybe get three old dumpy HP18 for the same money (but i dont know the current prices of these HP beauties.
The hp 18 dumpies are still undervalued. They have much older whiskies in it too

Before I hear your tasting notes, I prefer the 2019 by quite a bit.
I agree with this, though I liked the 2020 a lot! So glad I landed a back up 2019!
Yah, we liked the 2019 better as well. More balanced
