Mike, if you want to taste what an oily thick and aged version of this Lag 12 2015 would be like, then go no further than the Port Ellen 1983 32yr 15th release. They are a nephew and an uncle IMO. What are the odds---different eras and distilleries? The PE 15th has most of its ABV in oiliness---not burn. As such you can leave it on the palate for a long time, chewing it and swirling it to harvest every bit of flavor (I love this feature in a whisky). I score the PE 15th at 93-94 pts. This Lag 12 2015 would be the poor man's PE 15th release---and I concur that a 91 pt score is very well justified. So, those who love the profile of this Lag 12 2015 can know that if they wanna splurge, they can do it safely by putting that money into the PE 15th release . . . . . . . FYI

I’ve seen a Sutti import like this without the pure malt, it also states 57 GL for the strength. Very dark juice. Would that be in the same ballpark of quality?

Had a bottle of this back in 2016 when I could find it, $250 then, cant find now. Just purchased a bottle of the Noces Dor Sublime, advertised as 30,40,50,60 yr blends, hope it delivers.

The key with the early White Horse bottles is air and time for the palate to match and exceed the nose--and for the juice to reach its full potential. From my experience of hearing stories, most whisky fans don't air the juice out enough and miss the best it can offer. For example, one of the several types of 1988 Lag 16 bottles I have is a 1988 Swiss import version (with code LLJA 0000503 on the rear label--before they added the "Classic Malts" branding rear label in very late 1988--and this LLJA 0000503 code represents a mid 1988 bottling). For this bottle as example, I spent 2 years slowly drinking it down to a 1/2 bottle fill level, but the juice never went to the higher scores but stayed in the 90-91 range for most of that 2 year process. So then I let that bottle sit for a year untouched at 1/2 fill. Only then did it become transcendent on the palate where I now give it a 93 score on most days (92 on off days). In fact, the palate on this fully aired out bottle now scores better than the nose (which is what I like most since it's the worst when the nose gets a drinker excited only to be let down on the palate). This process does this because the fruits and many complex candies and toffees and custards need the peat and farm to fade to the background so that they can expose themselves on the palate to achieve a fuller and more complex experience. Unless this is done, the real magic will stay partly to mostly hidden on the palate. I don't fear the conventional wisdom of, "it will go flat with too much air because 43%". The early years of the Lag 16 (as old school early 1970s distillate) have enough density of oils in the juice to stay vibrant with tons of air in spite of 43%. My default now with new Lag 16 bottles is to pour off about 1/2 bottle into sample bottles (37.5cl or 20cl or at minimum 10cl size bottles) and then leave the 1/2 fill level primary bottle to sit for 6 months before doing a test. If I don't get the magic to come out with that after letting a pour breathe for 30-60 minutes after pouring, then I let the bottle sit again for another 6 months---rinse repeat until the magic comes out from hiding. Once I get the magic to come out on the palate, then I enjoy so that I don't "waste" this great juice by failing to air it out properly. When that magic "aired" juice is getting low, I then take the new juice from the sample bottles that I originally poured off and start the "airing" process all over again. I always have an "airing" bottle percolating so that some magic juice is always ready to play on the palate. Once the Lag 16 gets to the 1992-1993 bottling years and newer, there is less magic in the juice to come out and 92 is the top score I can ever get (up until around 2006 or so with some import batches), but I still follow this same process with all my Lag 16 bottles from 1988 all the way to my newest bottle which is 2022 because the most magical notes that the lag 16 juice has will only come out with lots of air. My favorite year of the newer juices is 2018, because the bottle batches I have add some nice tobacco cigar notes to the fruits/candies/toffees, unlike the stuff from the 1990s or even the early 2000s. The best score I can get from the bottling years 2010 to 2020s is only 90-91 since the juice just doesn't have the horse power left in it like the old days (without the airing process the scores for 2010 to 2020s years 87-89, but the airing process can add another 2 points potentially). I even let one of my 2018 bottles sit at 1/4 bottle fill level for 2 years to see what happened---and it stayed at its best even after that in spite of not being "old school" juice. Anyway, FWIW, this process as described is the solution for improving the palate. Yes, it's a bit of a high maintenance process, but it's fun doing it because of its ethereal and almost magical nature. By doing this process, the early years of the Lag 16 is the best Islay juice for the money on the planet IMO.

The sister casks from this 1968 distillation of Bunnahabhain were eventually bottled as Port Askaig 45 year old. It too is cask strength but the angels have had even more share and reduced the abv to 40.8%. Quite superb whisky. Excellent stuff. Deliciously complex.

My local Total Wine just got this for $200 USD before tax so it’s on my wish list. It is labeled as spirits direct so there’s a chance I could get 10% off on it. it’s $180 before tax. In this day and age for an 18 year old scotch, I guess that’s good but still kind of pricey.
