Good info thanks. I've got 2 Montmorencies that never really seem to produce many cherries. Both are 7 years old. Do you do all your pruning in late winter or do you remove the larger branches (to stimulate new growth) in the summer after the trees have finished producing?
I do my major pruning in the early spring or when the tree is in bloom. That way I can see all my flowering buds and I can control what to leave or remove much easier. You can prune all summer until maybe mid July so that the new branches that were stimulated by pruning can grow out and get hardy enough to make it through the winter.
I have a MontMorency sour Cherry tree. When is the best time of year to prune to increase production and what do you do to increase the size of the fruit? And how best to head back a tree that has gotten too big?
You main pruning should be done during dormancy. Depending on what you wanna do with the size of your tree, you can head cut your branches or remove them to a stub to regenerate new growth. All of your fruit is set on one, two and maybe three year old wood. As far as the size of the fruit goes. If you want bigger size fruit, then thin out some of your fruit on the tree and it will focus more energy on the ones that are left. Also water and fertilize.
@@growtolearn4545 Thank you very much. I learned so much from you video yours is the best of all I have seen on the subject; You took the mystery out of pruning and the identification of fruit buds for me. Thanks again!
@588158 you are very welcome! I think that is probably the most important part of pruning for fruit production, is understanding where the fruit is set, so that you can control what to leave or remove.
