When planting fruit trees don't expect fruit for 5 years. You'll get a couple before the 5 year mark. 1st year in ground, tree should flower and fruit a little if planted in spring( plant is establishingitselfin new home, 2nd year, tree focuses on rooting so you don't get many fruit( sometimes no fruit)
3rd year tree focuses on stretching out to find more light,
4th year tree will be flourishing and looking great but you still might get alot of fruit but by the 5th year, mostly all fruit trees will have an abundance of food. Be patient and garden with love. Keep it organic and don't think to hard. Think natural and guid the plant life to flourish
My father was an orchardist for 70 years, he used to prune a heavily flowered branch or two and place them in a bucket under the tree for his trees in an outside row. It helped a lot, bees did those buckets too, and pollinated the blossoms above.

I don't understand you very clearly. You mean your father put a heavily bloomed flower branch pruned on the tree that you want to make it pollinated?
Qing Peng he would cut a heavy flowered branch off a different variety of cherry, place it in a bucket of water and set the bucket under the tree he wanted to pollinate. His outside rows usually, because there were only cherry trees on 3 sides and the outside sometimes just did not have the density of fruit the others had.
The smell of an apple blossom is so mild you might not notice it from a single tree.
But stand in an orchard and breath deep, a most amazing scent.

I have a cherry tree I planted probably 12 years ago. Never had any fruit until last year. All the sudden it was loaded with cherries. Its the only one I have. I guess someone not to far away must have a Cherry tree also.
Unless it's grafted as my cherry tree which is only 3 years old gives me fruit
Or maybe someone got a peach tree near by!
Mine also didn't give fruit for many years. I know there's another cherry tree but it's one block away so the bees didn't visit both of them. So this year I get cotton stick, go to my around the block cherry tree, manually message my cotton to their flower, bring back to my home then message my cotton to my flower, then WALLA , it is finally did the trick !

I'm going to add a fifth very common reason why fruit trees don't produce here in the Deep South (South Georgia for me). Sometimes you just don't get enough chilling hours (temps between 32F and 45F) during the dormant season for the variety. I grow pear and plum trees. I've had to top work many of the varieties I've tried simply because we don't get enough chilling hours for them.

THANK you for this video. The warblers were a beautiful accompaniment to your enthusiastic on-site teaching. I learned so much on details I hadn't heard before, especially "same species and/but different cultivars/varieties". This made sense along the scope of diversity. I liked the observation you pointed out regarding king blossoms and the others availing to full flowerage later to maximize a possibility for pollination.
I just love your straightforward explanation of all the problems we have in our gardens.

I bought two peach trees last year having been told that two trees pollinate each other and will increase the yield. Having later learned the two peach trees were different varieties, I was concerned that wouldn't work for pollination. This video assuaged my concerns, and in fact, that is exactly what is needed. I totally lucked out. Thanks!!
hi i have tried peaches but they always get peach leaf curl bordeux mixture helps ( has copper ) good luck with them.
My mom got two peach trees and planted them next to the old well and those bastards are covered in peaches.

Most peach trees are all self fertile anyway. That's something missed in this video.
Tart cherries are usually self fertile. Also certain apple varieties. And some apples shoot blanks (not able to pollinate other apples).

When it was too cold one year and no bees out I started pollinating the flowers myself. I loved doing it. Took some time but it was worth it. There was more than you can handle when harvest time came.

Thank you for this very informative video! A couple of years ago, a family friend snuck into our backyard and planted 3 fruit trees for us. We don't even know what kind they are! One is a type of peach but we don't know what the other two are lol they haven't given any successful fruits and now I know why!
I have about five acres i bought3 years ago. I finally decided that i wanted to pull the trigger on planting a orchard/garden in my back yard. I had to drop like 40trees to get the sun in. I just bought the first lot today. 4 fuji apples and 2 granny green apples. I plan on planting about 40 fruit trees in all. 10 apple 10 pear 10 peach and still deciding on the last kind. I might go with persimmons for the deer.

I have a cherry tree, label said it was red cherries and I kept waiting for the white fruit to ripen. Took me a couple of years to figure this out. In the meantime the native birds scoffed the cherries and passed the stones in several places. These trees grew and are now pollinated by different native birds that eat nectar. I just call them the birds cherries and buy my cherries from the supermarket.
Also frost damage to the blossom and also using a Triploid to pollinate another apple. Blossom weevil can also reek mayhem in a small orchard.
Wow, great information! A year and a half ago I finally found a supplier of a Snow Apple Tree. I had thought they were extinct, and Snow apples were my hands down favorite as a child. I went to buy one, but they were so inexpensive, I just had to get two. Given your information, I’m so glad I did. I got my first crop this year, and am enjoying a small but fabulously tasting crop of Snow Apples (also called Fameuse).

The year before I had the worst year ever for my fruit trees. During blossom time last year it was freezing that week. I’m pretty sure that’s what did it. They are flowering now and the week looks like great weather. I’m hopeful thanks to you. Thanks
I got a little scared this year because there was a cold snap for a week. Luckily I don’t think it hurt my fruit trees.
Several years back I helped my grandmother with some of her yard work after a hurricane. She mentioned she had this old satsuma tree she would probably want cut down if I had the time.
Said she planted it, and another one about 20-30 years ago. Only for the second one to die a few years later to nemotoads? Something like that ate the roots and the tree baked. Said she would probably want it cut down since it never fruited for her.
I trimmed the tree up pretty good, clearly needed it, I than fertilized the tree the next time I came. Every few months I would fertilize the tree, figured I might as well give her a chance to change her mind.
Oddly enough the tree fruited the very next year, she was shocked, I hadn't expected it without the second tree since she mentioned it. I know how some trees are not self fruiting, either way it fruited.
Our soil is pretty poor, mostly sand, and very compact clay, really no organic matter too it here, too close to the coast. I think the tree needed the prone but I do believe it was the fertilizer which helped it produce the next year. It may help others in a similar circumstance as well.

Years ago, in my area (East Tennessee), there were so many bees that around my fruit trees there was so much buzzing that it sounded like electric motors running. Now, because of Colony Collapse Disorder, things are almost dead quiet. I see very few honeybees anymore. Walking around 12 trees mid afternoon last year when it was about 70F, I only counted about 20 bees. This year so far has been no better and it's very sad to see.
We hope to make an impact in reversing that trend with rediscovering old ways of raising fruit trees in RESPECT of nature.
The bee population is decreasing tremendously as well as the birds . Last week I purchased good quality bird food and the cashier was condescending and actually giving me orders on how NOT TO FEED THEM stating that birds are dying because they would rather eat the seeds than the protein found in worms , I said to her that maybe is not the seeds killing them but the poisonous WEED KILLER THAT INDOCTRINATED PEOPLE KEEP ON PUTTING ON their lawns because everyone was taught by BIG PHARMA to kill the WEEDS because we rather have a beautiful lawn while killing the fauna and beneficial insects and creatures that play an essential role in nature and getting rid of the TRUE MEDICINE growing in our grounds , how convenient right?
Dandelions are amazing “ WEEDS “ that aren’t only a healthy source of food but also great natural medicine and healing for both humans and animals.

Honey bees are not native to the Americas. Disappointing he didn't mention this but, flies are the main pollinators of fruit trees.

Very good information that answers why my Santa Rosa dwarf plum tree not giving every year has lots of flowers every year but if get lucky only get about 12 plums and small ones a year sometimes nothing, I planted it like 6 years ago.
I have an apricot that only makes about a dozen blossoms per year. I do prune the tree by making a flat top on it and thinning out the branches. I don't clip the fruiting spurs because I figure they will die off on their own and then get replaced. Maybe a blight is killing the blossoms.
A really good technique to pollinate in your plants is to play EXTREMELY Loud music to them preferably classical with high octave notes this vibrates the pollen and helps pollinate flowers that have have the ability to pollinate themselves on the same flower.
Failing that you could get a couple of Q-Tips or earbuds depending on where you are and collect the pollen from other apple trees close or miles away and use those same Q-Tips to to rub over your flowers.
I use art paint brushes.

Thank you Stefan. In the 50s and 60s our Pear, apricot and cherry trees were the only ones and produced well.
I think I trimmed my blackberries too much, they totally stopped producing.
They do have a productive lifespan. If they were planted in the 70s they owe you nothing. Get some new plants.
Blackberries produce fruit on last years shoots. You only want to trim the shoots that have already produced fruit.

I have a Frankenstein apple tree with four different cultivars grafted together, plus a cherry/apricot/plum tree. I have other cherry and plum trees, but I guess I need an apricot.

Last year I didn't have any apples like previous years, due to heavy pruning to stop the trees going over the fence to the neighbor's property. And the sixth reason is the variety you may have planted will not cross-pollinate with the ones you already have. This is critical in a small orchard like mine. I have 4 apples, 3pears, 6 cherries, 3 plums, 2 nectarines, 2 peaches, 2 Asian pears, and a partridge in a pear tree! Oh, and a Robinson crabapple to assist in pollination! And the trees are supposed to be dwarf and are planted on 13 foot centers. I get fruit from the apples, pears, Asian pears and one cherry, so far. The orchard is 13 years old.

Great insights here, particularly about bees or their absence, and ditto to all the comments below about suitable cross-pollinators flowering at more or less the same time, as well as self-fertile varieties e.g. of cherries and apricots. One thing worth bearing in mind in order not to be intimidated by horticultural jargon: "Culti-var" is an artificial word made up from two - "cultivated" and "variety", so it just means a variety (i.e. of a species) in cultivation, as distinct from something found in the wild.
Well Tom if you want to get technical there is a difference between a cultivar and a variety. I get my definition from Michael Dirr (Manual of landscape woody plants). He defines variety as 'a plant that varies from the species in one or more traits that are visible or invisible (like hardiness) and that can be reproduced by seed'. While a cultivar you are correct is a cultivated variety and he defines it as 'a plant that varies from the species in one or more traits that are visible or invisible and that can ONLY BE REPRODUCED with those traits VEGETATIVELY' (ie, cuttings, graft,...). Since almost all our fruit trees can only be reproduced vegetatively they are cultivars. Hey I'm ok with people calling them varieties I just prefer to be correct for those in the know.

I guess from a logical point of view one could say that all cultivated varieties (cultivars) are varieties, but not all varieties are cultivars, i.e. cultivars are a subset of all varieties, distinguished by human intervention.
I have a single lemon tree. It used to grow fruits well. Last few years, it stopped producing fruits. Any obvious reasons? I don't know what changed. I'm in San Francisco in location that always has morning dew.

Thank you so much, so helpful. My 5 yrs old apple trees haven't fruited, except for 1-3 tiny ones with wasp larva infestation. Every time we had blossom we had a hard frost. Im not so discouraged now

The pollen doesn't necessarily need to be from the same species.
When our fruit trees were flowering without enough bees and insects around, I've used flower and spruce pollen to (over) pollenate them.
I blow the pollen all over the fruit trees using a leaf blower, introducing the pollen into the intake of the leaf blower.
It works amazingly!
This is not possible. It would be like impregnating a chicken with a hamster. Some nearby place had same type of fruit in bloom.
Hi. Very interesting video! Talking cherries in the mediterranean: Our cherry tree has crazy blossoms with many active bees and many other cherry trees in the surrounding, yet fruit set is very poor. I was told it does not stay cold enough for long enough. What are your thoughts on this?

I just picked up 2 cherry trees fromhome depot! Cherry trees (i read) requires 300 to 1600 hours of “freeze temperatures “ to get fruit! Just what i read (im on zone 9b so I GUESS IM FINE)

Hi! I just discovered your channel and find it fascinating. I do have a problem with one of my fruit trees. I am new to gardening and have a three year old dwarf cherry tree with leaves that tend to fold. It is planted in a place that used to have a maple tree in it. The maple tree died. I was able to get the stump out but, still had a lot of very hard underground root system there and I suspect the cherry tree roots are having a hard time finding their way around them. Is there a way to mitigate the issue without digging up the cherry tree and moving him elsewhere? Sadly I don't have anywhere else to put it. Otherwise, he seems pretty healthy. He still grows - if a bit more slowly than my apple trees do and he even got flowers this year. Thank you so much for any help you can provide.
Actually trees like growing where trees grew. Their roots follow the tunnels left by the previous trees roots as they decay. Curling leaf is probably aphids. Check out my aphids video.

I have a Spartan Apple Tree in my backyard and it produces a minimum of 200 lb of fruit every year for the last 20 years. I grafted a Royal Gala in the middle of the tree you can graft more than one variety if you want, this way you don't have to worry about bees or temperature and wind, let gravity do the work. This is why UA-cam gets a bad name.

I learned to put a "Fruit Tree Guild " around my trees....certain plant attract Bees more than other. So I give my bees a buffet of plants
They love rosemary.
Marjoram & Lemon Balm & a couple of Lavender plants are marvellous at bringing bees into orchards or gardens.

I have a small yard so most of my trees are self pollinating types for this reason. I don't have any apple trees because they have to cross pollinate. I do a lot of research before buying a fruit tree since my space is so limited. I do have 2 paw paw trees because I want paw paws so much. (they are still too young to bear yet but I keep hoping...Yes. I know paw paws aren't bee pollinated.) I focus a lot on fruit I love but can't get at the grocery as well. Fuyu persimmons are a favorite of mine but they are so hard to get and I have yet to see a paw paw in any store near me. I found out from my neighbor that the subdivision I live in used to be full of paw paw trees before it was developed and they were mostly cut down - sad. Maybe I can bring them back! He told me he wouldn't let anyone touch my little trees -lol.

I live on acreage that used to be a peach orchard. I can't grow peach trees here and don't understand. Weird.
Wow, I never knew about the "king" apple blossom. I have one bunch of blossom on my apple tree that has been open for a week, all of the other blossom on the tree is still budding - now I know why! We have had lots of bees in the garden, because it has been warm for an English April.
