You want to cut away from the ring towards the center. Otherwise it won’t heal.

If you have a sucker without roots can you scar it, put the dirt back around it to promote future root development?

Yup! I've had good success using woodchips and compost as well. I haven't tested scaring enough to know if that makes much of a difference for promoting root growth, but that may help. If you do scar it you might try adding a rooting hormone if you have it to see if that makes it go any faster.

On your peach graft attempt, you should have used some rubber bands to really tighten the buds 👍🏼 and then another layer of tape.

I agree, they needed held a little tighter! But thankfully a few held in anyway! I'm really hoping to see some success when the trees break dormancy!

Can you just transplant the sucker without a grafting a branch on? If not, what are the reasons?

You can, but the variety of the new tree will match the variety of the root it grew from. So if your current tree was never grafted, that would be a much better choice! If it was grafted, you likely end up with a much less desirable fruit from the new tree. Another option would be to let it root in and get established before grafting - that would be a good choice if it doesn't come up with very many roots.

Can you do this in the summer?

    • @HonestHomesteading

Absolutely! Though I would recommend putting the rootstock sucker into a pot and keeping it well watered and shaded to minimize transplant shock. Usually by midsummer you can find new leaf buds on the tree branches that will work for summer grafting as well. Just remove the mature leaves to keep those scions from giving up their moisture. I collected summer grafting material in my video on chip bud grafting peach trees so you can see the process in that video!

This is not grafting... this is transplanting. Grafting is a trimming of a limb not digging up and transplanting roots.
