And I didn't know the difference between pruning my apple trees and peach trees. Thank you so much for this video and excellent information!

By far the most informative video with regards to pruning that I have ever seen. I've always been confused of what to prune and now I can do it! Thank you for this
James such brilliant information on pruning. It all makes sense. I wish I had seen this 30 years ago when I was clueless! Many thanks for your efforts in producing your high quality videos. 😊😊
Man, you’ve become an absolute staple resource for all of my gardening advice. This was such a helpful video. Thanks for doing what you do, keep up the great content.
I just acquired 2 pear trees for planting this September and enjoy learning from your videos. Thank you for explaining the "why" behind what you are doing.
That was interesting and I learned a few more tips about pruning! I’ll be out there in the next few days pruning my three apple trees before the weather gets really low again.
Hello there! Happy new year to you I just recently subscribed to this channel and found many capturing comments and videos. I just wanted to say Hello when I came across your account! Hope you're well! Scott
Thank you, thank you, thank you James for this concise break-down of the mysteries of pruning. As a newbie gardener planning to put in some fruit trees next year, this was something I was dreading, but you've really broken it down so well and sensibly. I'll be watching this vid over and over again, as it gives me confidence that I'll be able to tackle the task. And yes, I'd love a series on the individual fruit trees. Lots of love to you and Tuck from an Aussie in Europe.
Wow you are an excellent teacher! You explain the concepts well and provide many examples to drive the point home. Thank you for taking the time to make these educational videos!! Tuck needs to give you a raise! 😊
My garden took a tragic church starting in August and I couldn't bear to do anything with gardening til now. The shining light in it all was a bountiful amount of the Rose De Berne tomatoes you recommended. They are instantly my favorite! Thank you so much! I'm gonna try new techniques this year and hopefully experience less failure. It's only my 3rd year. Thank you for these vids. They warm the cold days!
Awww cute little tuck, your buddy, Your pruning video is the best I have ever watched. All your videos show the best techniques and ideas. Your the only gardening channel I watch. Keep up the good work. Your food forest is absolutely amazing. We should all grow our own food, you videos make people want to grow. If we were all like you the world would indeed be a better place. Thank you James.
Thank you so much for this video! Super helpful! I watch all of your videos! We bought a house a year ago and I want to start growing fruit trees like I grew up having, but was intimidated by pruning. You make it make sense to me! Also I hope Tuck is well! I love him! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I really appreciate all the detail and demonstration you do about pruning fruit trees. I knew next to nothing. I would've ruined the trees I hope to get in the next 2 years. Thank you!!!

Thank you James, this is a wonderful step-by-step comprehensive tutorial on pruning our fruit trees. We appreciate you and Tuck ♥ braving the cold to help us out. Merry Christmas to you both 🌲.
Best pruning video I’ve seen to date. Clear explanation and he shows it multiple times. Repetitive demonstration of thinning cuts, heading cuts, and bench cuts.
Hey James! The reason I found permaculture was as a result of two things: 1. The Pandemic and 2. Your Channel. The more time I spend reading about and practicing permaculture, the more I am convinced that I am meant to do this. Why? Because of one thing you said in the video..."we can take a glimpse into the future". In my day job, I get paid for doing just that, so why not extend those skills and experience into the garden, community and environment. This video filled another gap in my understanding and for that I am very grateful to you and the boss Tuck! I am excited to order some merch for our upcoming sub-tropical winter Down Under! Thanks mate! No Worries!!
I for one always appreciate your videos where you explain the why. I have been following your channel for years. So my Food Forrest confidence has been because of what you are accomplishing here. I am gearing up for pruning and this video answered a lot of my concerns for that process. Keep up the videos and I love my Grow '22 hoodie I got a couple of weeks back.
You have thoughtfully condensed a lot of great information about pruning into this vid! Thank you so much for all you do. I always enjoy your vids and your enthusiasm. 🍎🙂🍏
So so helpful! I’d love to see you do a whole tree of each kind just so I can really get the understanding down. Also maybe do a big old tree that has been neglected. A friend bought a house with a big old tree that needs lots of pruning but seems a daunting job. I send your videos to my garden club and they are enjoying them too!
from a city girl became a garden girl in the last 2 decades, managed a bigger parkland, focused to improve soil quality, and at the same time looking after many different fruit trees, have done a lot trim with my understanding, but still have so many questions about the trim style, time, function, have read 📚, but after this video, I could still learn so many things. Thank you so much 💓
This is exactly what I want to see because I was confused on how to prune my young apple tree. Thanks for the close up shots and detailed explanation. Now I know I should be doin heading cuts for my young fruit trees. Please continue to show us your process on that young apple tree.

This is by far the BEST video on pruning. I have watched so many videos on pruning, but this guy explained it so thoroughly. Not only where to make the cut, but exactly what that cut does for the tree. I feel a litttle bit more confident now. Many thanks. Subscribed.
I have never understood pruning, especially when, how, and why. Thank you for breaking this down into easily understood blocks of information. Well done!
The video was long, the information you provided is essential. I love the spreaders used to train the tree. Thank you for taking your time making this video. Very well done
I think this is the most useful video you’ve ever done, at least for those with fruit trees. I have some newer trees and some older ones. I have a horticulturist friend who has come to help me prune a couple of times. I still feel like I don’t do a great job, but I hope I’m getting better. I spent quite a few years over-pruning my trees. A couple things he showed me, one had to do with training a branch to take over for another(not that I got that real well) and also something about the windward side of the tree needing to be pruned differently. Do you know anything about these parts of the pruning subject? I would love for you to do a series of videos on each type of fruit tree, maybe visit other(maybe neglected?) orchards where there are much older trees so we could get a better idea of how to prune older and neglected trees. Thanks so much, this was very helpful information!
James, this is super helpful. The detailed information as to why it is done that way is great! I was wondering if you have any videos on pruning figs or blueberries.
@@annettehurmiz1079 You mean the hanging branches? If so, no. I let them do their thing. If I have a branch that droops too close to the ground with berries on it, I just use a bungee cord to pull it up higher. I top them off every other year or so to keep ‘em shorter and take out any dead wood. I have a high bush blueberry that would get 15’ high if I let it and I don’t want to have to get a ladder to pick. Ha ha.
I agree with everyone who has commented about this being the best video ever on pruning fruit trees! I have watched many but none as informative and clear as yours. Thank you!! 🤩
Thank you James this is by far one of the best videos on pruning fruit trees. I would love to watch future videos on how you use sulfur spray and clay to protect the trees.
Yet another rousing, beautiful, and informational offering…FROM NJ! Here is a pruning story. One Fourth of July I got invited to a very exclusive music concert on a farm in New Hampshire. I walk the tree on the property and noticed the apple trees were a mess. I went back up to the main house, found the proprietors of the farm And ask them if they would mind if I had at their apple orchard with my clippers. Now, I’m a guitar player and I was there with a band and they sort of gave me a funny look but thank me and said she will go ahead I am Baldauf down the hillside, and began to put the apple trees in order, little by slow, over the course of the next three hours, folks came down to check out what I was doing. Little kids, pregnant, mothers, some Rastafarians with some herb. And they were posing questions, and I was showing the techniques. Finally the bandleader came to the top of the hill and said hey, Johnny Appleseed, it’s time to rock ‘n’ roll. We had a nice show, and reception was great from the crowd. The next day, our friends, aged grandparents showed up and happened to walk down to the orchard. They came back up the hill and asked for their granddaughter. My goodness said the grandmother, what the heck happened to the apple trees , everyone fell silent and the silence grew into an embarrassment. I stood up for my breakfast and walked over and introduced myself. I did grandmother, your apple trees were about ready to become unruly beyond repair and much to everyone’s relief. She gently touch my elbow and said oh I know, I know. Oh thank you young man. Thank you so much! Do you see my grandfather planted those trees. They mean so much to the family I barely audible but significant sigh of relief spread through the crowd as my friends came over with bacon and eggs, buckwheat pancakes, and a generous pitcher of real maple syrup for “Johnny Appleseed.” I love this earth, the home we have. I love the people and I love the memories because nowadays memories are all I have left.
My local horticulturalist taught me that there is a slight "knucke" at the beginning of every new branch called a cambuim layer. The layer is loaded with cells that are responsible for successful healing of the cut. I like how you used the anvil side of your pruners to avoid getting too close. Nice Felcos btw. I love my #2s so much i feel naked without them
Beware - actually this practice with the pruners being used the way you describe, is wrong, you should always cut with the anvil heading away from the wood, that you want to preserve. The reason is, that there is always some compression at the anvil side of the pruners, which damages the wood (the collar in this case). You don´t want to damage this, as this hampers the healing of the collar. The thickness of the cutting blade is normally fully sufficient to lead you to the collar line. Moreover, especially with a heading cut, you want to cut beyond the collar, almost flat with the growth direction. This is actually the reason, why the bypass pruners are a better option for fruit tree cutting. Last but not least, you want to cut with the blade heading away from the tree trunk, in the growth direction of the branch, you cut, as this prevents damaging the bark.
Id love to see you do a video on how to prune a peach tree. Our peach produced peaches one year and it's been 3 years since it produced anything. We must be doing something wrong. Thanks for helping.
I saw a good video in a peach orchard I forget the guys name but he has YT gardening channel. The orchard was owned by some old man I believe in Michigan. The video goes in depth on pruning and spraying peach trees, lot of information I took notes.😊
This is one of the best gardening videos ever! I will definitely be a regular on the channel, and I even start liking the hat as well already... Thanks a lot!!
Ayyy heck yes! I'm so excited to learn since good techniques ❤ thanks for the super valuable information. Yours and other amazing channels like it inspire me to garden different things and not worry about being afraid about getting into some unknown territory. Give Tuck a head pat for me, and have a great day ❤
I am doing espaliered peach trees this year because of limited space, but this video was very informative as to why that technique works! Thank you, very eye opening!
Wow. So much great information that I never would have considered. I like how you explain what the purpose and results will be when pruning and training. I also liked how you explained how trees grow. Thanks again. Oh, and of course, Tuck is just as adorable as ever 🥰. Thanks again James 👍
Thanks for the in depth class! I wonder why different fruit trees do best with different shapes. Can you recommend a good reference (book or other) for what shape is best for other fruits such as citrus, pomegranate, persimmon, guava, avocado, fig, etc.?
Or make a video about them! 😊 I was going as well to ask about citrus, avocado, fig and guava trees. My fig tree gives like one fruit a year. Australia.
Lee Reich's Pruning Book is a great book for referencing. A few things he mentioned that were different than yours was that pruning should be done in late Winter so the cuts will heal as soon as growth begins in the spring so the wounds won't dry out. Also something I learned the hard way is that some varieties of certain fruits are tip bearing (apples and pears) and if you prune the ends of the branches you could be pruning off next years fruit. Great summary of work though and you covered quite a bit. Thanks for sharing!
Your knowledge and understanding of trees just knocked my socks off. I've learned more about trees in this video than ever before. THANKS! I subscribe of course. 😊
Thank you James! I would be interested in a tutorial on individual types of fruit trees, fruiting shrubs and vines as well. You and Tuck take care and have a great holiday season!

They mean so much to the family I barely audible but significant sigh of relief spread through the crowd as my friends came over with bacon and eggs, buckwheat pancakes, and a generous pitcher of real maple syrup for “Johnny Appleseed.”
I love this earth, the home we have.
I love my #2s so much i feel naked without them
It’s called the collar. The cambium layer is just inside the bark, that carries the food to the branches.
@@cynthiafisher9907 I stand corrected thank you
Beware - actually this practice with the pruners being used the way you describe, is wrong, you should always cut with the anvil heading away from the wood, that you want to preserve.
Thank goodness my trees are young when I found you. Thank you
Id love to see you do a video on how to prune a peach tree.
Nice overview of basic pruning rules with matching examples! Great camera work too. Thank you for making this topic more clear and understandable!
If you’re pruning now, will there be enough time for the trees to harden off? And can you discuss the advantage of pruning now versus early spring?

@@sbffsbrarbrr Thank you!
4:50 young apple trees- adding this for myself since this is what I needed. Thank you for your amazing video!
Australia.
You are a true 'director of apical meristmatic tissue' and you have earned your Felcos. Treat them well and they will serve you for many years!
Would love a video specifically on apple tree pruning!
Spreaders!!!! I had no idea there was such a thing. Brilliant solution..... and they fit perfectly in the budget. Thank you!
Hands down, best pruning video on UA-cam!
Let's Gooo!!!!
your intros are the best. Always makes me smile
Thank you James! I would be interested in a tutorial on individual types of fruit trees, fruiting shrubs and vines as well. You and Tuck take care and have a great holiday season!
I haven't watched the Channel in a long time. So glad to see that contagious energy in the opening of the video still rocking. And then, of course, all the great content of the video. Keep up.
James we don't let our Yorkie get lassoed by the kneck to get "groomed". He's a rescue who had terrible honking; not so much 5 years later.
Thank you for everything I have and am learning from Jersey Growing.
Wow, you’re full of knowledge and compassion. Thanks for educating all of us!
