There is something wrong with ur channel... I searched it a lot earlier but was not able to find... Also despite being so good videos there are a few likes
Hello. It's a very good idea.I have some questions. : What was the heating wire attached to? Heating area how many sq.m.The power of the heating elements? Thank you.
It would be great if you could post another video with the resulting fruit. Thanks for the info. We have lots of old trees that haven't fruited for years.
What season is best to do this in should you definitely trip b4 winter regardless?
I would like to see when your fruits are ripening on the plant. That will be very good to watch.
Yes, absolutely
how do you prune a tip-bearer apple tree
They produce fruit buds on short weak branches. The vigorous and long growth will not have a fruit bud on the tip. You can cut those back
Do you collect honey from them
No, they don't produce honey.
I didn't know plums only fruit on 1 and 2 year old wood. That will affect my pruning in future, thank you. However, everything I've read and seen says to prune plum trees in Spring/early summer to avoid/reduce possibility of silver leaf. I'm in the UK, maybe it's not a problem where you are?
You're welcome
Whilst providing homes is better than no homes we should not be using drilled holes or bamboo canes if you want to help the solitary bees maximise their next generation. Holes and bamboo will get infested with pollen mites, Houdini flies, mono wasps, and other pests as left empty in the spring and cannot be cleaned out. Wildlife and beekeeping organisations strongly recommend either nesting blocks that can be opened and cleaned out between uses or cardboard tubes that can be cheaply replaced to be housed in a standard nesting box that you get at any garden centre. See UA-cam videos by Crown Bees (I am in no way affiliated with them, they just have good explanations).
Call that neglected? My cherry tree is over 6 metres high and some of the branches are 8 to 10 inches thick.
😆 I guess we all have our definitions
I have a few apple trees, two are about 12 years old and they just don't make blossom, well this year one had one flower and the other had 3 flowers. The stunted tree of the same variety has loads of fruit every year, so the problem is not location or pollination etc. the two that don't produce have healthy dark green leaves, I have carefully pruned them to create space for air and light, but as you can imagine I am flummoxed. everytime I google for help all I get is the same stuff which assumes the tree is too young or not getting pollinated or frost damaged etc. I would be so grateful if you could give me some idea what might be going on and how to fix it? One tree is a winter Gem and the other a winter wonder, these are newish British varieties. I can't remember the root stock, but the trees are about 8 feet tall. Please please help me or point me in the right direction. I am going to watch as many of your other videos now but if you could reply I would be so grateful. Thank you. I am in the UK
Hello there! Well, if your tree is not growing in complete shade and you do proper pruning. Maybe you can try tipping all your new growth this summer when the shoots reach at least 12 inches towards the end of June. And also pull down some vertical branches more in a horizontal position this will cause the tree to put on more fruiting wood for next year. Horizontal branches produces more fruiting spurs.
@@growtolearn4545 thank you, very much, do you mean pin some of the branches down to a horizontal position with string or something? And does tipping mean taking of a third of new growth of a shoot? Thank you again.
Спасибо за информацию.
Пожалуйста!
Is it too late to prune a sour cherry tree with 0.5 to 1 inch (2-3 cm) leaves? No flowers yet. It's May in southern Alberta. Last week we had snow on the ground this week it's Summer. It happened too fast. Didn't have time to do it earlier.
Hello there! Most likely you will be ok 👍 try to paint over your cuts that are over 1/2 in.
@@growtolearn4545 Thank you for taking the time to answer. Would you consider posting an instructional video about frost damage? Last year we had some decent weather in early April and then when the first buds started to emerge we went down to -20C. And stayed there for two weeks. Everything died. We had no fruits last year. None. My trees brought the first few leaves in late June. I thought they were dead for sure. This year driving around town I still see that trees have less than 30% of the usual amount of flowers on them. Most trees have meter long bare stretches on their branches. They just didn't recover. Even my willows look like that not only fruit trees. Well ... that's Southern Alberta for you. And this year I saw maybe about a dozen flowers on my two sour cherry trees. This is going to be the third year in a row that I don't put any sour cherries in the freezer. Oh yeah. 2022 had a frost in May as well. My point, not sure if I should start cutting them back to eliminate those long empty sections? Sort of a reset? It seems they are not coming back anyway. Thanks again.
I just saw these at home depot, but the stems were all dry and broken off the raspberries... Is it likely it'll rejuvenate once planted or dont bother?
When you are buying plants, try to buy the most vigorous and healthy looking ones, unless they are super cheap and that's all they have.
I have a few questions: 1 Did the tree turn out to be on its own root? Or is it grafted? If it's grafted the suckers are the rootstock. If it's on i's own root, what's the strain? Is it a chickasaw cultivar that has been passed down locally? Plums are pretty good at having a very visible graft scare when they are grafted, even when they are super mature unlike some fruit species.
It's grafted to a rootstock.
My pear trees are not blooming at the same time. Can I pollinate a tree with itself?
If they are self pollinating, you can. Otherwise you need a pollinizer that blooms at the same time.
Freestone Peachtree
Got my trees last night.
Oh! That's awesome 👌
You need to have your kiwis at least 12 to 20 feet apart
Yes! I totally agree with you. I did this to test the varieties, if they would grow well In my climate and if I would like the flavor of the fruit. It takes at least four years for them to start producing fruit, so to save on time, that's what I decided to do.
I have a Pink Lady tree. The last 3 or 4 years it has been developing spurs but they do not produce any flowers so far. The same goes for the tips. I left several tips on the tree the last two years and I am not even joking, only one produced flowers each year. What is going on and what should I do? If it happens again next year I am grafting it over to other varieties and trying my luck with that.
Hello 👋! How old is the rootstock? Or what is the pink lady grafted on?
@@growtolearn4545 It is on M111. The tree has been in the ground for 5 years and I am guessing when I bought it at Lowes it was already 2 years old.
I learned more by watching this video than the other 50 videos I've found on UA-cam. All other videos seem to cut branches randomly and way too quickly for me to understand what is happening. I really appreciate the pace and in-depth explanation of what a new branch looks like, where the fruits grow on that branch, and what happens after you cut that branch.
Hello! I am truly happy to hear that you have found my video useful for you. Thank you for the beautiful comment!
Which month to summer prune in western WA, to ensure the tree won’t put out new shoots from the pruning cut.
Hello 👋! The tree will, for the most part, always put out new growth after a cut was made. You shouldn't make cuts during a month of August, because the new branch won't be able to get hardy enough for the winter. It will most likely freeze in the winter.
Amazing orchard. Really well kept and beautiful to look at. Do you spray copper or other fungicides for leaf curl.
Thank you! Yes I do spray copper at leaf fall and during dormancy, also at bud swell.
By cutting back you simulate lateral branching which in turn will bear fruit (short weak laterals) How do the spurs which fruit for longer duration (few years) develop? do they develop in response to cutting back or something else?
Yes, they do develop more so then if you don't prune in the summer. Summer pruning also plays a big part in controlling the size of the tree because it distributes the roots energy into many more branches. More energy goes in to making more spurs on two and three year old wood and more side branches that have fruiting buds at the base. That means more potential fruit.
@@growtolearn4545 thank you. So, should we pinch the current year growth in summer for the shoot to develop flower buds.
The trouble with these blocks is you can't "clean" them. Yours look like they are being used for the first time. So, you'll get lot's of bees next year. Unfortunately the pests will start to find them as well. The bees will keep using the holes year after year. And so will the pests. Since you can't clean them, you'll end up with more and more pests. That's why I started using the stackable nesting blocks. To my surprise I already had Houdini fly larvae in a few tubes, even after the first year. I'm going to try and retire all my wood blocks but bees sure do love them. It will take some work to get them all replaced. You're in luck with that big garden as they don't fly too far either. I have to get blooming flowers in to make sure the early risers have some pollen 'till my cherry tree starts blossoming.
Yes, that is a good possibility. The thing is that the Mason bees are everywhere and they fill up every hole they can find. So even if the pest develops, you still give the bees a chance to reproduce. I have the firewood stack and they live in the cracks anyway. Either way we end up helping each other. More homes for them and more fruits for me.
Awesome job! Looks good and you really opened it up
Hello 👋 thank you! This tree is doing really good now.
How long does these type of grapes take to start producing fruit
Hello! Usually the grape, plus minus, depending on the variety will start to produce on its third year of vegetative growth. You got to make sure, if you only buy one then make sure its self futile.
Poor Audio and terrible camera person - face the mic when you are speaking for gods sake!
Hello Sarah 👋 yes I agree with you. I will be making new videos soon with new equipment. All of us are always learning and becoming better at what we do. That is why I named my channel grow to learn. We learn by doing. Thank you for giving me advice. I hope you at least found something useful in my video.
keep up the good work
Thank you kind sir!
Good info thanks. I've got 2 Montmorencies that never really seem to produce many cherries. Both are 7 years old. Do you do all your pruning in late winter or do you remove the larger branches (to stimulate new growth) in the summer after the trees have finished producing?
I do my major pruning in the early spring or when the tree is in bloom. That way I can see all my flowering buds and I can control what to leave or remove much easier. You can prune all summer until maybe mid July so that the new branches that were stimulated by pruning can grow out and get hardy enough to make it through the winter.
I have a MontMorency sour Cherry tree. When is the best time of year to prune to increase production and what do you do to increase the size of the fruit? And how best to head back a tree that has gotten too big?
You main pruning should be done during dormancy. Depending on what you wanna do with the size of your tree, you can head cut your branches or remove them to a stub to regenerate new growth. All of your fruit is set on one, two and maybe three year old wood. As far as the size of the fruit goes. If you want bigger size fruit, then thin out some of your fruit on the tree and it will focus more energy on the ones that are left. Also water and fertilize.
@@growtolearn4545 Thank you very much. I learned so much from you video yours is the best of all I have seen on the subject; You took the mystery out of pruning and the identification of fruit buds for me. Thanks again!
@588158 you are very welcome! I think that is probably the most important part of pruning for fruit production, is understanding where the fruit is set, so that you can control what to leave or remove.
Why are you using so much plastic wrap?
Not necessarily need to, you can use less.
I did that in fact i did it better then u did but non fruited woth 3 varieties dont know what happened but i just thought the tees were not strong enough to produce. Will c if i have better luck this Spring. My plums didnt work but i did it with my apples using crab flowers and it worked.
Everything under plastic wtf is this
That's one way to control weeds.
We just bought a house with a massive cherry tree and know nothing about it! Any recommendations on sprays or treatments? We're going to try pruning here shortly
Well, first thing, to check if it's healthy and what your plan is. Will you be using it for food or just for esthetics?
Nicely done. I wish I watched this video, before I pruned my trees this year.
I will be making more of these videos in the future
I watched many pruning videos and this explains it best! I finally understand how to do it. I have an older, neglected tree.
Glad it was helpful!
How have these done with that tight spacing? Everything I've read about them suggest huge spacing between the plants. 10ft or more. The area I have is much tighter so I'm planning to grow them much closer. I'm curious how you've done with a similar setup to what I'm planning.
They have gotten much bigger. I am growing them over to the side of the row. My primary goal was to test the variety. Last year I let them go to see where they will set their fruits. On what branches and shoots. Also keep in mind that they start producing only after 4 years or so.
Be sure to make the pruning cuts just PAST the swollen collar at the base of the branch. In some of those earlier cuts, it sort of looked like you might have been removing the whole branch including the collar, but the collar is helpful in closing up the wound and protecting the trunk from disease.
Yes, you are correct! If you are trying to remove the branch completely, you should cut it at the coller
I'm sorry, I couldn't understand what you are saying.
Hello there. Is there something in particular you are looking for?
Will you make new videos?
Hello there! Yes absolutely! I have been and still am very busy this year. I'm trying to find some time to do that.
@@growtolearn4545 do you have a Facebook?
Yayy, super easy to understand the process and you went into some of the more refined choices one needs to make in the process of pruning. Thank you.
I am so glad you found my video helpful!
Again, not a really good explanation like tonnes of other videos. You just talk about what branches aren't good and start randomly cutting them. That is not helpful. Make a simple drawing and go part by part of the tree. Also, I don't get it about the vertical sucker branches. Some people remove them completely and you cut them in pieces, so who is right?
I am sorry you didn't find what you were looking for in my video. I will do my best to do a video with a diagram breaking down branch by branch to make it more understandable.
excellent video
Thank you so much!
I would keep goat with apples trees they will eat everything they can jump on the main truck and clear all buds leaves and fruits in one sitting
You do have an excellent poit there!

Sorry about that! I'm still learning myself, I will try to do better on the next videos. Thank you
Sorry! Still learning. Thank you for your comment 🙏
@@growtolearn4545 Me too! I’m sorry, didn’t mean to be mean, I’m just so frustrated at all the pruning videos I’m watching on cherry trees. I’m still bewildered. I know the basics but then what? The most frustrating thing about your video was that the viewer can’t see well what you’re doing. Maybe a go pro would help? Or you could teleport to my tiny orchard for an afternoon and teach me! 🫶🏻
