I’m trying out for a part in this play and I’ve been doing a lot of research; this is by far the best production of “Blithe Spirit.” This is going to help me extremely for my auditions!😊
Peter, is that you sitting on the sofa with Mrs Condomine? Blithe Spirit is such a gem of a play..... No wonder it's been done many times. Have you seen Angela Lansbury as Madame Arcati, she seems perfect, to me ! I have seen some excellent British regional accents explained on You Tube videos....I am always amazed how many different nuances there are, within a few miles. E.G., differences between, say, Liverpool, Birmingham, and Manchester (for latter, see "Daphne Moon " In "Frasier" ) My husband did some choice acting parts with a local amateur group : one was "Daffyd" in "Chrorus of Disapproval". There were 2 Welsh ladies in the audience , and they wanted to meet him, as they were convinced he was Welsh ! He also put on a Birmingham accent in a northern cafe , once, and fooled the waitress in the same way ! Plus he played Old "George Hill" in the daring play "Having a Ball"....I've never heard such a "wall" of laughter.....It was a bit "rude",and some people walked out, but it was hilarious in places. That was at Romsey "Plaza, near Southampton. If anyone wishes to practice pure vowels, our Julie Andrews is superb with them . I hadn't realised how pure her speech is... Our announcers on BBC Radio 3 are also very good, clear speakers. My favourite for diction there was Corrie Coldfield (sp.?), now sadly retired. The posh London accent can be found in "Jeeves and Wooster", and many other productions. Brian Sewell (now departed), is rather amusing with his" clipped" diction.... Best Regards from England. I hope you succeed greatly in the theatre.
A fun performance full of good bonhomie. Unfortunately spoiled by racing through some of the dialogue which spoiled a few of the jokes and the articulation needed to have been more cut glass. Thank you for an enjoyable download.
Oh dear...Charles looks out of the window...." Not a cloud in the sky..." Outside it is pitch black...slight continuity/ lighting / set hitch, there... Madame Arcati could have been more flamboyantly dressed... The set is not enough "of the period"...is this the idea of an old English sitting room ? Sorry, they have the words, but it doesn't sound so good in the American accent.... is it that the audience wouldn't like it in an English accent ? Or is it too difficult to do? Elvira would have been better in a floaty, long , maybe silver/white, maybe sparkly, evening gown, and more " ghostly" looking.... Good effort for youngsters , anyway....well done, young people.😊🇬🇧💕 Have the players seen the Dirk Bogarde or the Rex Harrison version? The latter IMHO can't be improved on, and an approximate imitation would have been a fitting tribute.... ah well...love from England.🇬🇧😊💕🇬🇧😊
I played Charles and Rex is also my favorite. British accents do help, but bad accents are worse :) Most Americans don't understand regional or class dialects properly except maybe of course the brashest Cockney or most posh London. I have been working on my Cornwall, northern (which I used in college for Billy Liar) and midlands accents. My wife and I binge watch the last 4 decades of BBC TV, and I am always surprised at how mixed the regional accents are in those shows. I think CoRnish is my favorite right now :D
