Dayum. 5FDP above Lamb of God, Slipknot, Slayer, and Korn? Brave man.
No just stupid.
Not brave, just poor taste
Yeah...WTF
+++ agreee stupid shit like 5fdp beter than legend slayer)
I kind of agree that Slipknot are overrated, and Slayer has been mediocre for a long time now, but putting them low is madness. Korn I like, but I think it doesn't necesarily is better than 5FDP, which is not bad anyways.
Having Motorhead D, and FFDP in B is just...
Yeah like.... Wtf 😒 that's an insult motorhead Fucking Rules and should be in the highest tier with Megadeth Judas Priest Megadeth and iron maiden
Motorhead in D is just a Joke
Motorhead C, FFDP Five F Plusses

You almost put Judas Priest in the same tier as Five finger butt punch, I can't even describe the pain I feel from that.
I know. Five finger death punch needs to be in the eat dog shit tier
Priest rules. No Sabbath, no Priest, no metal.
Deal with it

Metal absolutely would’ve continued without Judas Priest, though we wouldn’t have bands like Slayer or Venom.
Painkiller was one of the most important albums to me as growing young metal head.
The Metallica tier explanation is by far the best and most universally accurate one.
nah not before that megadeth explanation
Sorry but for me is Metallica only a c Tier. The old Songs are god, Not gonna lie. But "newer" Songs are to Mainstream for me. Megadeth stays the Same for over 30 years, and they Not changed and stayed in the Thrash Szene.

I’m a huge Alice In Chains fan and it’s cool to see that they were included in the B tier. Although not the biggest. I think they were the most creative band to come out of the Seattle big four.
AIC and Soundgarden were the top two out of the whole grunge scene, in my opinion. Unfortunately, overrated Nirvana overshadowed all of them.
Hell yes I agree 100%
Alice in Chains is super unique and I feel that even though they "aren't metal" they are still embraced by the metal community for the most part.
@@brbosen Jerry Cantrell will die on a hill saying that AIC is a metal band. He hates them being called grunge or anything else lol
True, I think I would have put Alice in Chains in a tier (I'm also a huge fan) but considering the fact that they aren't strictly metal he made a pretty sound judgement. Skid Row was just "no" and Stone Sour was "I'm not considering them metal right now!" Lol I get the hair metal joke, but Stone Sour are Alternative metal so they do fall under that category!
Maybe you could argue that Stone Sour also fall under Post-grunge, Nu metal, Hard rock and even Alternative rock so maybe they aren't strictly metal a bit like Alice in Chains but how many other people still know 30/30-150 as their signature song? That song is the perfect template of an Alternative metal song and most of their albums have more of a metal leaning too!
@@futurebreedmachine9302 I agree, Nirvana was mostly a sloppy mish mash of the Pixies, Wipers and the Melvins, they might have been revolutionary at the time and had a somewhat interesting sound even by today's standards to give credit where it's due! However, their music lacked feeling and mostly just struck me as apathetic cynicism, plus they weren't in anyway considered metal, other than through Grunge lol
Cobain wasn't a bad singer but he didn't have the vocal power and presence of Staley or Cornell. Both Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were interesting and dynamic in their approach and their music had a lot of feeling aswell! Though I would argue Soundgarden had more of a psychedelic edge whereas Chains had more of a harmonies and melodies edge.
S.O.A.D is a unique band. They have weird ass lyrics but somehow their weirdness just kicks ass

Holy fuck Mike has opinions
Dude, Dirt by Alice In Chains is an amazing sounding album, production perfection in my opinion
Nevermind for legacy, but I will always vote Dirt as greatest grunge album of all time because it is incredible and weird and opened up metal for me as a child, same with the Black Album.
You aren't a snob or elitist, because that would imply you uncompromisingly demand a high standard. You think you are a snob because you're presenting your thoughts bluntly and unapologetically. What you actually are is a regular dude with regular opinions, a lot of which are formed without actual understanding of the thing you're judging. I wonder what I the viewer am to do with such opinions.
For example, you rip on bands with criticisms that may apply today but complete ignore certified classic albums they have produced. Meanwhile you praise bands that are virtually defined by the same traits you criticize.
I mean good grief, Helloween in F? Motorhead in D? Disturbed in A? Five finger death punch higher than the band that made Dusk and her Embrace? Are you on crack rocks?
Being unfamiliar with the channel, I just assumed the "SNOB" thing was some kind of in-joke. If not, I have no idea what it's supposed to mean.
I think the snob part comes from his obsession with production values and how he dislikes most classic metal bands and entire genres(black metal specifically and most other extreme metal genres) because of it, not understanding that there actually is a value to what he calls' dogshit production'.
@@OwlR4id3r I’ve seen some of his videos. He’s a classic gatekeeper. What he likes is dictated on how the media thinks of them. If they’re not as popular, he calls them the metal equivalent to motzart. If they’re a very famous band, he calls them chimpanzees that robed a music store.
Going to my 1st metal show tonight, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Baroness, and Suicide Silence. I’m excited for it

Anthrax is not really that bad. Their "punk thrash" style can be very fun sometimes, even comical I would say. It's a breath of fresh air compered the other thrash bands that used to take themselves way too seriously. Not trying to say they are the best, but definitely not the worst. I personally find most of Slayer's stuff way less interesting, and that comes from a prog-thrash head.
Anthrax is not bad at all
@Ghostface Kurd Killah the stuff from Slayer i actually enjoy are their earliest work. No Mercy and Hell Awaits are generally speaking good albums (although the production on both of those is even worse than Killing Is My Business). It's the rest of their work that I find extremely uninspiring and monotonous.
100% agree anthrax is awesome great live shows serious stuff like Indians and fun af stuff like bring the noise and all that
Anthrax is slow
JB era > JB era
I’ve seen a lot of people come across Metallica in like a ranking system, which obviously always ranks high, and everyone is always like “yes, obviously, moving on”
One of the best things of Rammstein are the lyrics. It’s really smart writing at times. And yes. Metallica doesn’t need an explanation.
Skid Row and Ghost are more Metal than several bands you gave a pass to. I legit don’t get how Three Days Grace counts but they don’t.
Ghost, Abba with metal elements. 😂
@@Qyngali New Ghost maybe, but their first 3 albums, certainly first 2, are genuine metal. I don't get the hate either. They're a breath of fresh air to me.
@@mattdad8429 it was mostly a joke, I do like a lot of their stuff. :)
Never heard Skid Row but yeah Ghost should qualify if glorified butt rock bands like TDG and Breaking Benjamin qualify
Right? I love Ghost. They are old school 70's and 80's Heavy Metal.
I’m a big fan of Avenged Sevenfold, but I get the thing about M. Shadows’ voice. For me it was much harder to get over James Labrie’s vocals than Shadows.
Oh total agree on that.
💯% agree. Would take Shadows over Labrie anyday
James Labrie is the main reason why I don't enjoy a lot of Dream Theater songs.
I like a7x more than dream theater but I like James Labrie way more than M. Shadows
the thing is, he USED TO be one of the best prog metal vocalists, arguably at least. go listen to any of the recent dt live recordings. it is painful to listen to. i know hes had an infection but it doesnt make it any less painful. dt fans shit so much on modern pop singers not being able to sing live, but id listen to most pop singers live nowadays than dream theater because of labrie alone. in the studio sounds fine tho@@napo7866
Man! This guy is brutal, & makes a lot of takes that would be deemed controversial in the metal world lol
Agreed! I had this look on my face when he spoke of Motorhead like I was in the same room as a couple having an abusive domestic dispute.
He's just the normie metal Finn Mckenty lol. "Singer not melodic. Production need more Protools. Why no hook? This band bad"
@@donniehoffman4738 He is entitled to his own tastes. He strikes me more of a proghead.
If he were a Death Metalhead he would search for aggression, speed and technicality. If he were a Black Metalhead he would actually favour low production, atmosphere and wouldn't mind repetitive lyrical themes, etc. Different strokes for different folks.
Donnie Hoffman You are the man, I always tried in my head to come up with the best possible and most perfect criticism/diss on his general take on music which I am not a big fan of and you’ve totally nailed it and made it hilarious too😂 The greatest thing about your criticism or should I say diss is that from an objective and technical point of view it was not offensive at all because some people may take the points that you made as positive traits, you are a genius!!!😁
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266
Yeah but in a musical perspective, you’d always want to go for better production/sound, even Slayer tries to go for “good production”
Remember people, music is subjective, you can like what you like and that’s okay. 👍
Dream Theater are the poorer excuse for "music" I've ever heard. Literally all flash and no substance, there is no point in having long songs if they are completely uninspired.
I think anthrax’s 80s stuff holds up super well! Especially the guitar tone!
Anthrax is basic fun. Thrash doesn't need to be super technical to be good, and Anthrax is a great testament to that.
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266 I totally agree! And the speed and ferocity is terrific!
Spreading the Disease and Persistence of Time are fabulous!

What I love about Blind Guardian is that they do Power Metal without being over the top cheesy. I think even people who hate power metal can enjoy some of BGs discography.
Power metal is cringeworthy don't lie
Yeah I don't like power metal but BG rips
as someone who usually hates Power Metal, I can agree. Guardian are great
I think it's because Blind Guardian are from the BTTFAF (Before Through the Fire and Flames) era. I'm pretty sure that song singlehandedly spawned all the cringier modern PM bands that we associate with the genre today
Imaginations From The Other Side is defenitely one of the best Metal Albums of all time imo
Mike, you may not know this but when you heard Roots (Bloody Roots) from Sepultura the reason you were laughing is because the lead vocalist Max Cavalera literally took the melody from Right Said Fred I'm Too Sexy and didn't realize it at the time. Max even admitted it. Just re listen to the verses of Roots and you'll laugh.
Hey yo, big Anthrax fan here. I love the band quite a lot. Mostly the Thrash Years from 'Spreading the disease' up to 'Persistence of time'. I think they have some great riffs, fun solos and very wonderful singing done by Joey Belladonna. The John Bush era has some good songs but i don't really care about it. The newer stuff is also quite good. I think they are great at making fun thrash songs, as well as some personal and emotional songs.
I wanted to see them this month but sadly they cancelled the european tour.
P.S.: No one cares who is or isn't in 'the big four', all of the oldschool thrashers made bangers and albums that were constantly rivaling each other in technique and quality. Have a great day!
I generally feel like Anthrax were more willing to have fun with their music than many of their contemporaries.
they were in the "Big Four" as that was based around who sold the most albums. Anthrax sold a lot more back in the day than Testament, Exodus, etc. FFS they had enough of a presence to be guest star in an episode of Married With Children.
Spreading the Disease and Among The Living are great albums, State of Euphoria and POT are good with a few great tracks.
@@oldbittercraig3513 OK. Cool.
Sound of White Noise.
In my opinion, earlier Sepultura like Arise and Beneath The Remains are miles ahead of the Roots Bloody Roots sound. Those albums are so great
you're so correct
Imo prime (early) Sepultura is the greatest metal off all time
He criticized arise, said it’s the same crap other Metal bands do.
First 4 Sepultura albums are goated as fuck
Of all the metal bands and no "DEATH"? Chuck Schuldiner is a legitimate metal god.
Death is unequivocally the greatest heavy metal band of all time, imho. Not the most popular or most mainstream choice though outside death metal circles. Constant innovation from Scream Bloody Gore through Sound of Perseverance. Every album he worked hard to top the previous. Brilliant songwriting, riffs heavier than hell, technical solos, I love his idiosyncrasies/styles i.e. using Egyptian/phrygian dominant scale. He even covered badass songs like God of Thunder and Painkiller.
Avenge Sevenfold has always been different every album. They never had one clear direction! People seem to hate that 🗿
I love that. Each album has a specific sound while still distinctly sounding like a7x. Genuinely can't wait to see what they do on their next one
Yeah, and i don't get it why people hate this. For me the only album that is dog shit is Hail to the King, but the rest just kick ass
That's true however I found myself not liking some of the directions they took, I loved the white album, City of Evil, Nightmare, The Stage is.. fine sometimes, but the rest I found pretty meh
@@maestro.humenhuk I genuinely love hail to the king lmao. Like it's in my top three with the stage and city of evil. I just never understood the hate. Sure I can kinda see why people dont like that it isnt authentic a7x since their trying to replicate or pay homage to their inspirations but to me that's just a part of the charm. The songs by themselves are all bops and the places where I can go "oh that sounds like Metallica or that sounds like Guns n Roses" is cool. From my point of view self titled is grossly overrated (the hits are cool but the rest is mostly meh to me) and the only truly bad album is sounding the seventh trumpet
@@kybalerton2608 The white album for me is more a thing from the moment it was released, i was in my teenage years and listening to almost easy in NFS ProStreet helped me develop a greater love for the band, it's more a personal thing for me and a for a lot's of people of my age. I really love StST, the influence of nu metal, ska and the early days of death core really pleases me, and is an album entirely without Synyster besides his lead guitar in to end the rapture in future prints of the album.
This being said i think hail to the king don't please me as much as the others by the moment it was released, i was older and discovered a new world of music in that point and i was not connected to them as i was in some part of my life.
Avenged Sevenfold is hands down my favorite band of all time. Their music came into my life at a perfect time. While I do agree with you that M. Shadows voice hasn't been up to par lately. But his voice on the self titled album and Nightmare album......Jesus he was killing it imo!
in city of evil shadows sound amazing too imo
Completely agreed!! Songs like Unbound, Little Piece of Heaven, Buried Alive, Victim, Tonight The World Dies would not have hit if Shads wasn’t at his peak vocally
Avenged is the band that got me into metal and playing the guitar, but I can understand their placement on the list. Either you love em or hate em (for various reasons). I’ve been a fan since 11 and they do stuff here and there that makes me cringe a bit. Still though, all time favorite no question.
A7X is my alltime favorite too and I love shadows voice but the way he sings does throw a lot of people off when I show them songs. I get it but I love it 😂
I just think it’s funny he puts dream theater in A tier and I have the same issue with them that he has with a7x. Labries voice is so ehh compared to the other musicians in the band.
So happy you put Linkin Park in such high tier. LP is very meaningful to me and without them, I would never have gotten into metal bands in A tier
same here. started with LP and now im jamming to heavier bands hehe
They were very influential. Chesters and Mikes vocals were very polarizing
Same
They get mentioned a lot for being the ultimate gateway band for young people, but never get the credit for how carefully crafted a lot of their songs were. They can play the same 5 notes in a song and it'd still be catchier than half the shit on the radio.
The way he put Helloween in F tier must be fking trolling to piss ppl off. No way he doesn't know how influential those guys are, even if he really dislikes their music.
To say that FFDP is higher up than Cradle of Filth says a lot about your opinion. Dani’s voice is great, especially when paired with Sara’s backing vocals (in the early days). A lot of forgettable songs and albums as the years went by, so they’re not consistently good, but so many great ones (between 96-03’) which warrants a high B IMO.
He doesn't like black metal shrieks, a lot of metalhead don't. But overall I wouldn't put FFDP higher yeah
Ummm no.
Big Anthrax fan here. I’d consider most of the music I like from them to be very fun. Obviously out of the big 4, the members of Anthrax have the most bubbly/energetic personalities and I think that reflects well in their riffs and overall songwriting. Have to also shoutout them taking a huge risk in mixing rap with metal which, to me at least, worked extremely well for them.
They are definently more accomblished and well known than Exodus and Testament as well which I don't get why he said they didn't deserve the big 4 spot. Scott Ian is a household name at this point.
Most bubbly energetic personality, that,s not what I think about when I think about Scott and Charlie.
@@johns6351 more accomplished than testament? what have they accomplished?
I used to feel the same about motorhead, but they've definitely grown on me over the last year or so, and their influence is undeniable.
Man Trivium might very well be the most underrated band... They are hands down of the most talented musicians and songwriters in the scene today, never wrote a dull song to be honest and their good stuff is unbelieavable and also very catchy!
Also, the vocals on Sepultura are freakin' awesome!!

Trivium is legit for sure. Great players and really good songwriters.
So glad that Blind Guardian got the respect they deserve. My first experience with metal was Nightfall in Middle Earth. But I'm heartbroken by your opinion on Avantasia
Alice In Chains has metal in a lot of their grunge sound. I'd say they're also alternative metal and semi-sludge/doom metal in some songs on their later albums.
By far the heaviest grunge band besides maybe The Melvins, which is also more sludge metal-like
generally when i talk to metal fans they say theyre grunge, but when i talk to grunge fans they say theyre metal. everyone seems to like them tho so its fine, i feel like theyre a 50/50 mix.
Arch Enemy definitely deserves a listen in the melodeath space. Jeff Loomis (from Nevermore) and Mike Arnott (from Carcass) write some great twin-guitar lead work and solo trade-offs and Angela Gossow is/was a beast of a singer.
Anthrax had a big influence to bands that has speed as part of their sound up picking qualities like Slayer. Being from New York and not California aslo help popularize them as well.
True, New York is big, and they built their fan base their I assume.
Just happy to see Iron Maiden in the top tier but, and sorry for disagreeing, I loved Senjutsu. When I first heard it I wasn't that taken but like every IM album it eventually gets under the skin and just lands, takes a few listens but been enamoured with it ever since.
I was pleasantly surprised by Blind Guardian. Very happy about that, they are in my top 3 favorite bands of all time.🤘🏻😍 Of course a very controversial tier list (Avantasia and Helloween for example hurt me) but that's what makes it interesting.🤘🏻 Tier list itself wasn't very good though.
Love that kind of metal as well, and I kind of thought he had a good point about how they seem to play that fantasy type metal in a way that just comes off less hokey or corny compared to others. Some can still do it well, but like Hammerfall, he nailed that. They just don't do it the way Blind Guardian can. Also, I don't think I really know Avantasia, so I'm off to go listen to them now and see what I think.

If you list the Big 4", one thing you should notice is each band, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer, they each have their own sound, love them or hate them. Anthrax was my intro in Thrash music in the late 80's. I loved the punkie sound with Joey's vocals. Megadeth was next. Metallica followed. Slayer was the last of the Big 4. I listened to a few other bands, but they simply did not have the impact as they often sounded too much like one of the Big 4 I already was listening to. While Thrash more or less went into hibernation in the mid and late 90's, the rebirth of Thrash in the mid 2000 was great. Not "crossover" Thrash but Thrash as it meant to be played.
I agree about Anthrax being the weakest of the big four and having dogshit production. But mate you HAVE to see them live. Its literally the reverse. I saw them this year. They played 13 songs but was easily one of the best shows I've ever witnessed. Most metal bands fail to replicate what they so in the studio live, whereas Anthrax the reverse is true. So tight
Saw them in Nashville about a month ago and they were amazing. Guys are almost 60 and are as good live now as they were in 1990. And I was very impressed with Joey; that guys a true frontman, he has so much energy and had great crowd work, And he still hit every note. they’re fantastic
Bullet For My Valentine being in B tier above bands like Slipknot and Slayer is hilarious.
cuz he is idiot
Agree!
I think you really hit it on the head with Sabaton. I personally am a big history nut and found them that way. But my god some of their vocals and the delivery of the vocals is just painful, especially early on. The guys voice is pretty cool and unique and the band is really good. They've gotten a lot better over time and are clearly learning, so brownie points for consistently improving and experimenting.
Yeah I’m a Sabaton fan and I love history but my god do Almost all of their songs sound the same, and Joakims voice can be grating at times
on a pure musical songwritting standpoint, Sabaton truly suck. All their songs sound the same. I mean they REAAALLLY sound the same. But the image, the history nerd shit, the hommages, the incredible live show, makes up for it. Its mostly a golden turd in a sense. Gold, but still a turd.
7:51 the 'almost' saved you there... Heaven and Hell is one of the best albums ever, hands down
Amen.
That album was literally an Iommi solo project but the label forced them to use the Black Sabbath name for sales, the actual comtrary of what happened to Ozzy whih he made the Blizzard of Ozz band and was fored to use Ozzy Osbourn as the name beause he would sell more.
@@Ms666slayer that's not even close to true lol

@@Ms666slayer you're incorrect but not ENTIRELY wrong. H&H was -- for at least a few seconds -- going to be a side project with Iommi & Dio, but it evolved into Black Sabbath pretty quickly. The true solo project you're thinking of is Seventh Star.
The instrumentation and musicianship on Dimmu Borgir's albums in early 2000s is superb. I might have a soft-spot for them but placing them in the F-tier just sounds strange unless you're not really fond of blazing drums and riffs.
I think Mike hates extreme metal, in general, with the exception of Opeth. I think Mike would think it's inauthentic as it's "brutal for the sake of being brutal".
In contrast to Mike, I rank Dimmu Borgir as my second favorite metal band. I love their style. The over-the-top dark symphonic Disney villain theme is extremely enjoyable. It takes quite a bit of talent to put together all the parts the way they do. Dimmu Borgir was responsible for getting me into extreme metal and I still think they're miles ahead of everyone else, especially in the black metal scene.
@@Nickwritespoetry I love Dimmu Borgir but they can be cheesy and maybe even repetitive. But if you put Manowar above them in C tier you lost any right to criticize stuff like that.
@@Nickwritespoetry Yeah, that makes sense. It's OK to not enjoy it but then it's more reasonable to not rate it at all if you don't "get it". Anyway, love your description of their sound. "Sympozium" is one of my favorites and it's just hilariously bombastic and over-the-top.
Early Dimmu, back when they actually took their music more seriously, were goddamn slaying.
Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is always a go to for me.
@@StirbMensch Love that album, too.
As a huge Sabaton and Nightwish fan I think both those reviews were very fair. I was actually surprised by your take on Sabaton, expected it to be much lower given some of the previous videos I have watched of yours in regards to lyrics not being music and, as you rightly point out, Sabaton is very much about the history and the lyrics. The songs are incredibly similar to each other, and they definitely have a structure they write to that both works incredibly well to produce hit songs but also is a bit too by the book, but I have never heard a Sabaton song (except for the ballads.....) that I didn't like.
On the Nigthwish end, I don't think they write for an aesthetic as much as their aesthetic is meant to fit the writing. Tuomas has always been the writer and this has always been his vision, so the appearance of the band part of his storytelling. And that storytelling.......well it only really makes sense to him :p
But the songs are amazing (in my opinion anyway) but its a very specific style.
Same! I mean look at my profile picture lmao, As much as I love Sabaton's riffs and choruses, I love discovering new stories to look up because of Sabaton.
You have a great opinion on both bands. I like both of them, too, although Nightwish comes out on top for me. The thing I very much dislike about Nightwish however is how they spat out some of the most talented artists, like Tarja, Marco, Jukka and that's at least partly because of Tuomas who's always been talked about as elitist and hard to work with. I'd also count Anette Olzon, too. She never got close to the vocal poweress of Tarja Turunen and Floor Jansen, but her style fit the band particularly well in the era of 2006-2012.
@@DDxRaptor that's true about Tarja, but Jukka left because of insomnia and Marco because of depression and other issues. They both confirmed in several Finnish interviews it had nothing to do with Tuomas and he is a great guy. I think the Tuomas ego thing is overinflated in the media , but the Tarja situation was messy and all parties regret that and have said as much . Tuomas is actually quite a reserved guy (we Finns tend to be ) and isn't nearly as much of a ego trip as often portrayed
I'm a big fan of both of these, and you're pretty much right about all of this.
Out of curiosity, what are the songs you don't like?
@@hithedragon7842 The Ballad of Bull.
There are people who enjoy it, and I like the lyrics and concept, but Joakim has a very limited range vocally and ballads are not in his normal range. So to me personally its hard to listen to.
I like your explanations for your choices. Even if you're not that into the bands at the moment, you give them credit they deserve. Seen other guys put good bands down the list just cause they're not that into them anymore and that's not fair
"Hansi's vocals are very unique, you know it's him every single time."
Mike on multiple power metal songs without Hansi on: Is that Hansi? That sounds like Hansi.
You said you don't like the latest Rammstein stuff: I think the latest album, Zeit, sees them with some of their best work yet. If you'll check only one song to reconsider, make it 'Angst': Nice auxiliary percussion in the hook, nice chord progression in the pre-chorus, teasing said chord progression in the 2nd half of the verse while the bass holds down a nice pedal note underneath, and most importantly: Till's never-before-seen intensity around the 2/3 mark of the song - I have never heard Rammstein like this before and I love it. Lyricals content and video are also very good, the theme being the radicalisation of the masses via fear (Angst), while using the phrase "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?", which literally translated means 'Who's afraid of the boogie man?', but is actually an old-timey children's game. The allusion to xenophobia/racism growing from some elements in society fanning the flames of fear and exploiting it - combining this with the children's game innocence is classic Rammstein but with an actual message, not just empty shock value. I applaud it.
And since you, Mike, are very much focussed on musical/compositional elements as opposed to lyical - I am the same btw - you'll also enjoy:
- the beautiful calm and open mixolydian part in the album closer 'Adieu'
- the use of autotune in the track 'Lügen' (= Lies) and Till still again bringing the same insane intensity we heard in Angst before
- how in the song 'Dicke Titten' at one point there is this wonderful clash of the ionian scale brass intro being carefreely played over the phrygian downtuned main riff. So bold-cheeky
As you can see the last four tracks of the album are imo def the strongest and among Rammstein's strongest material period. Zeit could be added to it, but that is mainly because of the lyrics. The song deals with our mortality.
Should you decide to give it another chance, feel free to let us know what you think!
Cheers'
Armee Der Tristan is a master piece.
lifelong amon amarth fan here, i can respect where you put them because every person and their experience with music is almost entirely individual. the reason i rate them so high personally is because of my interest in norse history and mythology. most people's levels of interest when it comes to many bands will fluctuate depending on interests outside of music most of the time, just an important thing to note for a lot of die hard fans of bands that he ranked low.
also i agree with everything he says about metallica
Awesome video again, I really love that you don’t get too caught up in genres and marrying one genre.
Most the bands, I listen to would fall under one genre of metal or another but I’ve never really cared to just hunt out one genre. If I like the music, I like the music I don’t really give a fuck if it’s one genre of metal or not or if it’s metal or hard rock or whatever. I never understood this just seeking out everything in one genre and only loving that and losing your mind. Anytime you meet someone who likes music that isn’t in that genre.
Pantera, Ozzy, Metallica, Alice In Chains, Slayer, Guns N Roses, White Zombie, C.O.C. , Mudvayne , Megadeth, Sepultura, Hellyeah, Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Fear Factory, Korn…. most of these bands don’t sound anything like each other, but I’ve never cared. Those are the bands that I absolutely love and will probably listen to for the rest of my life. Could care less what the elitist think, I burnt my copy of the heavy metal rulebook along time ago because I like getting laid.
Other great metal bands that were not discussed on this tier list include Caligula's Horse, Children of Bodom, Deftones, Dio, Epica, Mutiny Within, Nevermore, Opeth, Savatage, Shadows Fall, Soilwork, Trivium to name a few. Either way, Mike's sense of humor is pretty funny when trashing certain bands.
He did talk about Trivium but other than that I wholeheartedly agree.
I totally get what mean with Amon Amarth but I absolutely love them, they put on a really fun live performance as well
Same with Slipknot and Three Days Grace hahahaha. Get what he said, still love them
I very much disagree. Imo heaven and hell is easily the best sabbath album
Sepultura formed in 1984, Godsmack formed in 1995, but Sepultura is "Godsmackish"... Tells me all I need to know about our great Metal saviours knowledge...
Sepultura sounds absolutely nothing like Godsmack
Maybe he listened to the other band first?
Anthrax are one of my favorite bands of all time. Easily deserving of the Big 4 status. They have broken so much ground that many bands have walked upon. And, c'mon man, Dio era Sabbath?! Good stuff. Love you dawg
This is unironically one of the worst tier lists I’ve ever seen. Sending love to you Mike, this tier list is proof you need it❤️
I’m surprised Children of Bodom isn’t in this tier list
I whole heartedly agree with what you said about Slipknot, it is so fucking stupid. If you look at stage footage of them playing, Sid, Craig and the secondary percussionists literally do jack shit most of every song yet people pretend that they are vital to the sound
I’m just glad to see that Priest is in A tier. They tend to get overshadowed a bit and I’m not too sure why. I love both Maiden and Priest, but I’d probably take one of the early Priest albums over a Maiden album on a deserted island tbh.
Yeah not me 😂
They are often overshadowed by Maiden and Metallica because of their popularity and by Sabbath because most metalheads seem to think that band and that band alone created metal as we know it today. Also lots of people dont really know the importance of Priest's 70s work in the developement of the genre.
I’d take Maiden over Priest any day. Priest doesn’t have the hit-for-hit catalogue like other bands like Sabbath and Maiden do. Even records like Stained Class are INCREDIBLY overrated in my eyes, and haven’t aged as well as Maiden’s 80’s material.
@@Cheddar_Wizard Well, that's like, your opinion man, you know
@@MGdelOeste Well, hence I said “in my eyes”. I won’t speak for everyone, and I still think Judas Priest is great.
for a guy who has been listening to metal for almost 40 years and i listen and like all genres of metal this was the best explanation i heard from metallica :) and i also saw the video talking about the Black Album and for a guy who listens to all music styles from Grind Core, Death or BlackMetal, symphonic etc etc... I never thought that Metallica had sold out nor did I not like them and I loved the Album and I was happy to see Metal reaching people who said bad things about it since kind of musica and who today became metallers..
I’m actually developing a morbid enjoyment for this guy; his opinions are so wonderfully moronic it’s entertaining…
Whoever made this tier list is clearly European :D :D I'm 100 certain no one from America would put so many powermetal bands in there and omit bands like Cannibal Corpse :D :D
At the same time they omitted Opeth, Meshuggah, Children of Bodom, Mayhem, Ensiferum, Enslaved ...

Old PWD is some of my favourite stuff and im not nostalgic. I just find it wholesome and memorable. Simple yet great riffs, and awesome lyrics
Yeah they really gave their own twist to the whole metalcore formula, and had an interesting perception on rhythm, they would shift their beats more than most bands of the era. Things went south for them though, I don't buy the whole "they've matured" narrative, it's fine to just want to make some dad metal for a good payday, and the fact that they still make impactful songs here and there (like Wishing Wells) makes it even more obvious.
@@ptr_does_music7042 I agree. Im not even nostalgic, discovered them when Reverence came out, but they are truly unique. The new stuff is some of the most infuriating things ive heard ever.

Maybe a tier list of prog bands next? Curious as to your thoughts on King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis etc. in a context just like this video.
I’d love to see a Pantera video and how you approach one of my favorite bands
This is genuinely the first time I've heard someone say anything negative about Motorhead.
Also, FFDP over Korn? Damn
Holy shit you even put Slipknot behind FFDP? FFDP is literally just a shittier version of Slipknot

@Ghostface Kurd Killah He doesn't like extreme metal subgenres.

Metallica, SOAD, and Tool! All my faves made it to A tier!
Disturbed in "A" tier, but Dimmu sucks and Cradle in "C"? Put your channel in the "no", not really metal category.
Iommi said his band was protest rock. He called Led Zeppelin Metal in his autobiography.
Led Zeppelin is heavy metal...just not exclusively.
@@UnchainedEruption That's a good way to put it.
I like Arch Enemy’s new work the best from their catalog. Clear talent always but more melody this round.
It's definitely ok to be a poser! Most of the UA-camrs I watched are posers too anyway! Motorhead deserves to be in the A tier. Kreator should be put up in either B or A tier! Their 90s material is very questionable, but everything else is awesome! And Helloween deserves to be in the A tier. One of only the only bands in power metal that I love. There a few bands that I think are awesome, but Iced Earth isn't one of them! It's the crazy guitarist who went to DC Capitol riot!
And Sepultura also deserves to be up at the A Tier! Beneath the Remains, Arise and Chaos AD are their best 3 albums without a doubt!
Not sure how the list was made but super surprised that Opeth didn’t make it. Great video. Love the explanations.
FFDP belongs in the “eat fucking dogshit” tier. Obviously.
Hey Mike! Since Sevendust didn't make this list I'm curious as to what tier you would put them in if they were and your reasoning for it
I love Sevendust but he might put them into not enough context IMO way better than Disturbed better songwriting better singer and Morgan freaking Rose enough said.
Personally, A tier.
Amongst all the other metal bands, B tier.
I love sevendust. Great grooves, the drummer kicks so much ass with his chops and swing. Lajon is a talented vocalist, peak perfection.
The guitarists aren't spectacular to me, but have made great riffs. Only very few songs that don't capture me in the same way as others.
@@mg682 They should be way bigger than FFDP in which that's sad because they suck ass Sevendust one of the best live bands to go see.

Metalcore sucks tho
they are cringe af and generic

I'd attribute it a lot to the Metallica effect, I live close to the country and folks out there know Disturbed. They've gone commercial while staying to their sound I hear them on regular radio often plus come on "Land of Confusion" "Immortalized" "Stupify" " Stricken" just to name a few I think they've earned A tier and B at the lowest for sure
