    Thank you for this! My son is one and a half, biracial Black/white and I did this style for the first time today! I was amazed he actually sat still long enough for me to do it 😅 I only did 6 braids because his hair isn’t very thick yet, but it looks good (I still need practice!) I’m not sure how long the braids will last though, he has a satin pillow case and sheets, but he sleeps pretty rough 🫠

      @keepingupwithkham  Рік тому +1

      Yay! Love when the littles actually stay still long enough for us to complete the style lol. So happy you enjoyed this one enough to try it out! At one and a half we’re lucky to even get the style done, longevity of the style is a whole different ballgame 😂 but you’re doing great with the pillow case and sheets, let him get used to everything, and once his hair gets longer/thicker it’ll be easier for it to last longer, that’s what I learned. By age two it should be easier for the styles to stay longer, but for now you’re doing amazing! 💪🏽💙

    Your videos are so helpful! My son is biracial & has the exact same hair type so I’m trying to learn the best way to style but also maintain his beautiful hair. My son is 3 and the back of his hair is way shorter then rest. Did the castor oil help or do you have any other tips to get his hair more full? Also, any tips on protecting his hair at night? Love your videos ❤

    • @keepingupwithkham
      @keepingupwithkham  2 роки тому +2

      So happy that our videos have been helpful and enjoyable to you and your little one! I think up until the age of 4/5 their hair growth is just natural growth and genetics so the castor oil more so helped to maintain the hair in a healthy state for it to retain the growth it was naturally having.
      I would recommend protective styles that have minimal manipulation, that can stay in for longer period of time and the use of moisturizing hair butter/cream and oil.
      Shea Moisture Kids Hair Butter and olive oil were my go to products when Kham was your sons age. And try braided buns or two/three layer braid styles (ua-cam.com/video/KUAHyI7aYXM/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/BdrC1let-mc/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/sgPKeAxXYuI/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/6jun6H-JoY0/v-deo.html) to help with the shorter in the back longer in the front.
      In terms of night time, I highly suggest a silk/satin pillowcase, especially since the back is already shorter (may be breaking) it's better to not having the band of a bonnet or durag rubbing on the back of his hair. You can get the pillowcase at your local beauty supply or even Dollartree.
      Hope this helps! 💙

      Hi! 👋🏽 Kham is basically fully black, but he’s Jamaican, St. Lucian, (grandparents have Cuban and Surinamese in them). It definitely gets a little frustrating when he’s always called a girl but I guess that’s what comes with having long hair as a boy 🤷🏽‍♀️😂 he’s at the point where he corrects everyone, he makes them know “actually I’m a boy” and they’re always so apologetic and feel so bad lol. Oh no, I know the struggle! My main tips would be trying to do it when he’s sitting and distracted, so maybe while he’s watching his fave show? Eating? I also give a snack, and I tell Kham “okay buddy tomorrows wash day/tomorrow we’re gonna braid your hair”. I feel like a heads up definitely helps a little bit. But it’s mostly just our child’s temperament, they may just not like it. But keep trying, don’t force him, and hopefully it’ll get easier soon 🤞🏽

      It should stay in the braid, just do smaller braids, not that big of a section and I’d recommend something like shine n jam or a kids braiding gel and use it on your fingers as you braid down cause that way it can keep the hairs in place and should hold the hair in the braid.

      @keepingupwithkham  2 роки тому

      Hi 👋🏽 thanks for watching! I don't do much to prevent breaking the hair with the rubber bands, it just doesn't really happen. I find if you don't wrap it around the hair too many times, and if you're careful to lift the rubber band when removing them so you can keep the hair down and out of the way, then you'll be fine. I know there's a lot of talk about rubber bands breaking hair but it's really just about how we take care of them and how we properly/carefully remove them.

      Yeah totally! I don't wanna say anything sometimes cause I rather just not make it seem like I'm being rude but at the same time I need people to respect my son so I gotta correct them... or now, he's started correcting them too! lol

    My son's hair is so full and long now. And the longer and the more curls he has it's becoming more and more dry. What can I do to his hair to make it not so dry? Also my daughter has coily hair and dry too. I've tried so many products on them. I don't know what else to do.......any suggestions???

    • @keepingupwithkham

      I have been struggling with the same thing! I realized that this also caused me to try so many different products in hopes of finding the right thing, and the style products we loved didn't seem to work the same anymore either.
      Right now I found that water, Just for Me Curl Peace Defining Curl and Coil Cream, and Extra Virgin Olive Oil used in the LCO method has yielded some pretty good results. If you have a detangle you find is good in their hair, I would get a second spray bottle (dollarstore) and add some detangler, water, and fave oil(s) into it and just give their hair a spray once a day or every other day, just to keep the moisture and hydration in especially if their hair is out and not in a protective style. Other than that, it's a lot of trial and error to find what works best for them. Try and figure out their porosity too if you haven't already and try and incorporate products and even foods that work well for that porosity type.
      Good luck!! 🤞🏽💙

      Hi, I don't know if there's a specific brand name but I use the matte black elastics. I find them at the local hair store, they may be available at Walmart/Target I'm not sure but just make sure you're not picking up the shiny plastic kind! (I'll be showing an up close clip of the ones I use in this weeks upload #32) 💙

    I have a question. Are box braids called box braids bc of the braid technique, bc of the square part, or because of the pony tail at the base? Or all three?

    • @keepingupwithkham
      @keepingupwithkham  3 роки тому

      I say they’re called box braids because of the shape of the part, so if they were triangle parts then it would be triangle part or diamond part braids, easiest way to think of it.

      Juana Durham having a seat that he’s strapped into really makes the difference for me! I put him in his high chair, give him a snack, and put on his favourite show and he’s stuck like glue for the time I need to do his hair lol

    For those who are seeking braids and hairstyles for your toddler boy: I discourage you all from doing it. Not only is it a waste of time but it can also frustrate a child at such a young age on having to always be identified as a girl, place your toddler boy as your primary priority and not braided hairstyles as you will have to think about what's best for your child, and make sure to think about the potential bullying it'll cause as that can be problematic for your child too, you've been warned.

    Cantù is bad for our hair

    • @keepingupwithkham

      Everyone's hair reacts to things differently, unless we're using 100% organic ingredients from the earth, every product will be bad for our hair in some way. We only use the Cantu shampoo/conditioner as I find their other products are drying in his hair but everyone is different. Hope this helps!
