A very tutorial showing you how to knit entrelac. This beautiful (non-reversible) knitting pattern creates a basketweave kind of effect and is knit in tiers. I'll show you how to knit the base triangles, and how to knit left and right entrelac squares. Actually, it's better to think of them as rectangles (but that's just my two cents). I'll also show you how to finish entrelac in a super neat way.
The second part of this video focuses on entrelac tips and tricks for more advanced knitters. Often you end up with holes, yarn peeking through, and an overall wonky appearance. And I'll also show you how to fix these problems and create a super neat entrelac knitting pattern.

Very happy to hear that. This tutorial took much longer to record than I anticipated. Probably because in my mind entrelac is so easy because I've been knitting it so often but it made me realize it's actually sort of not. And these holes have been bugging me personally for so long.

Hi Norman. I wish to humbly suggest a couple of tips that I just learned from sad experience. I have just finished undoing a sort of coverlet for which I had finished some 10 rows of squares from 12 bottom triangles. The first tip is: Carefully analyze and choose your colors and color sequence BEFORE YOU BEGIN. The second is: Do not blend your tail ends into your knitting BEFORE YOU FINISH. If you have to do some undoing, it will be hellish…. Now you know what happened - wrong colors, disappeared tail ends. 😕😵💫. Happy knitting!

Ok I got so hooked that I am now 160 x 40 cm into my first ever entrelac blanket🤓 I use 7mm needles and a bulkyer wool in order to finish the blanket before it finishes me😁

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have only been knitting for a year. ( I started after a surgery that had me down for 6 weeks). I have enjoyed learning to knit by using UA-cam tutorials. Except I always felt like I was missing something that could make knitting more natural and relaxed. Then I found you a few weeks ago and everything clicked. From the way to hold the needles to knitting continental. It all felt right. So thank you. Now I found a pattern that i would love to try and it is all entrelac . I turned to your channel and BAM there it was. A complete and total tutorial on the subject. Well made, clear and concise. Thank you for taking so much time to explain to those of us still learning how and why we knit certain ways. I feel confident now to start this project. And I look forward to more tutorials.

Norman! Your videos are so helpful. Not just your expertise and very patient and clear instruction style, but the quality of the video showing all of it so beautifully clearly. And I do appreciate all the experience you bring in perfecting techniques for patterns, I know I’m learning the correct way to do these things from the ground up. Even my fumbling fingers can replicate what you’re doing, you make it so clear & look easy. I made a flat panel sweater on straight needles 25 years ago, and want to get back into it again now I have more time. In my enthusiasm, I wanted to learn how to knit in the round, do double-knitting, and fell in love with your version of entrelac (those legwarmers are gorgeous). So I’m knitting a 2 color reversible hat with an entrelac band, and probably just solid reversible colors the rest of the hat, and it’s working! My tiny test band is taking forever and has terrible tension issues all over, but that’s my own lack of muscle memory - the stitches I’m making are correct thanks to you and the reversible pattern is beginning to really show. Amazing, thank you, thank you!

It helps so much as many of us are visual learners, You are very clear and well spoken in what you are explaining and take your time to demonstrate different ways to achieve the knitting techniques... @@NimbleNeedles well, believe it or not I had to adopt a technique I've been using for a long time for other projects. I simply reverse the left and right triangles. Left is right and right is left. Lol, I also knit continental!

same here...it's almost always my first impression when I see entrelac..sloppy. lol. But it can be a very lovely pattern if you pick the right yarn and project. And will work on that in the round video :)

I had a basic understanding of entrelac, and I thank you for this video, because it inspired me to experiment and create (your videos tend to do that in my case). My first attempt at this happened during the lock-down last year, and was only in one color, with large needles (5mm) and worsted weight yarn; it looked something like a doormat, because it was very thick, the fabric had no drape at all, and the swatch was ridiculously large (it was a 12" square), but I learned how to do this. Now I'm thinking about lighter yarns, smaller needles, and drop-shoulder sweaters. I'm not a fan of drop-shoulders, but the thought of working out a pattern for set-in sleeves doesn't appeal to me AT ALL using this technique. I found your video to be quite entertaining as well. Keep up the good work, mein Freund!

Thank you sooooooo much, this was such a clear video, having conquored socks I may now jump in the deep end with a pair of entrlac socks!!! Knitting entrlac in the round could be an excellent follow up video, its the small tips that make such a difference.
i love entrelac socks...let's see what I can do buuuut...it's probably gonna take a bit because this video took way too long to record. Also, you will notice that's it's actually much easier. Just cast on, join in the round, knit across one row and then start with the base triangles. And then you can basically just knit standard entrelac rectangles across.
@@NimbleNeedles would you recommend the standard sock yarn and 2.5 mm needles to start with. I can imagine a fine 2.0 knit sock to look amazing in this.
@@metaimagery2084 can't say this of the hook as it would depend on the yarn. YOu can pick DK and knit 3 mm or so as well. But "sock yarn" is not a fixed wpi

Your trick for closing up the cast on "holes" is brilliant!! I've always hated them. I make entrelac hats starting with a 2x1 ribbing that I then "cuff" to make a very cushy brim. Then I start the entrelac and the holes have always stuck out like a sore thumb. This technique produces the smooth transition from brim to "hat proper" that I've longed for. Thank you so very much!!!

I enjoyed watching the design and colours come together - it takes a lot of time in miniature and the end result is just lovely so I will be doing this again but only smaller pieces like the 1:12th scale cot blanket which measures 6.5cms x 9.5cms😄! Thank you for another great tutorial. You always make it so easy to understand. One thing that caught my attention for the right triangle 18:49 … in your written repeat, you have written K#, p2tog for all the purl rows instead of p#. I got it right when I followed your video, but when I referred back to the screen shot I took later, I got confused and had to look back on the video again to make sure I had done it right. 😂

when it comes to increasing or decreasing, there is not only once technique. When i'm knitting entrelac in the round, I typically decrease the stitch count of my entrelac rectangles gradually by sneaking in a k2tog. Right now I am super busy but i'll put it on my list of ideas.
Norman, please could you do a tutorial on entrelac using a variety of stitch patterns within the triangles ie moss stitch, cable etc? I learn so much from you. Thanks!
