- Living on a Ranch the reality of raising livestock is sometimes gruesome and harsh. I’ve lost several chickens to coyotes, hawks, bobcats. Hence the reason you have Livestock Guard Dogs. They instinctively protect their charge. I watched in horror but could not stop them. They were doing their job. Bred for thousands of years to protect. We had sheep with baby lambs, Cows and calves, their doing there job on the ranch. The reason we have them, usually they just bark off everything perceived as a threat. In this case, the coyote came onto our property within the fenced perimeter to his own demise. LGD’s should never live in the city or be owned by inexperienced handlers.
