Superb lesson once again - quick question though.. When you play the bass strings (E or A) before you play the chords in the verse riff... Do you strum all strings and palm mute the other 5 (like in the Can't Stop riff) or do you pick the individual note? Hope this makes sense

  • @HIGHway2happiness
    @HIGHway2happiness 7 років тому +4

Hey Dave, John is one of my favourite Guitar players of all time and you taught me soo much about his style. I really appreciate that. Thanks for everything.
Its soo nice how indepth you explain everything in your videos. I allways wanted to play Dani Cali and now I can do it.
I just got 1 little thing for you. On the way to the third chorus with the diminished build up @32:00 you play an F-dim and go up to the B-dim on the A-String 14th fret. But he only raises the diminished triad a minor third. So you got an Ab/G#-dim. He explains it in his video about dani cali in the part 2 at about 1:30.
    E------
    B-9-12-
    G-7-10-
    D-9-12-
    A-8-11-
    E------
I hope you know what I mean. Everything else is just perfect. I really love your videos. Keep it up.
    Best Greetings
Edit: Ok, now I thought about it again and I saw that its basicly the same, because you only stack minor 3rds on top of each other -> getting 2 tritones. Therefore it doesnt matter where you start. The feeling seems to be the same. I´ll post this comment anyway, if anyone wants to play it exactly like him and also to show you my respect for what effort you put in the videos for us. I´m really really thankfull.

Do you think you're gonna do a song like "Can't Stop" at some point? It'd help demonstrate his percussive play style with the muting and strumming whilst playing single notes (plus pretty much all available lessons on UA-cam are pretty inaccurate and you'd probably nail it as always)

13:00 one of the most fitting guitar parts of any song. I absolutely love the that little pre chorus riff, but the way Frusciante plays it is quite intricate. The transition from G to D minor with the pinky hammer-on is so tricky for me to get clean.

This video is a magnum opus; nothing else goes as deep into the subtleties of John's playing. It's reassuring to know that even J.F. doesn't always nail the diddly bit on the D minor, demonstrating that it's not always about flawless technique, more getting the groove and flow of the song.

Brilliant Dave. FYI that chord in the middle 8 is a D/F# also known as D 1st inversion, also on the record he just holds the dim7/E shape at the 11th fret (A string) for the duration. Well done spotting that cool little chorus fill, I missed that. In the solo however your playing the low G note but John actually slides to the A.

32:57 this build up part has me stumped! Dave teaches it this way, John plays (according to my ear) in the video "John Frusciante - Dani California (Part 2)" an E7 going up to 11th fret to do the diminshed thingy, however the guitar master track for Dani California just sounds like only one chord, either E7 or diminished thingy that ramps up in volume and attack. Have a listen to the master track to see what I mean. Could defs be multiple chords harmonising, but I swear it just sounds like one chord

Another thing you can do to get around the D minor diddlies is playing at least the first part (the tricky one where you keep the bass note all the time) up in the 10th fret of the 6th string as the base note, plus that makes it basically D Minor pentatonic scale plus the frets are closer to each other and therefore it makes your fingers have an easier time moving all that much haha

When you were explaining the end bit without the distortion I thought ‘are you sure that’s it?’ then the moment you kicked it in was the nightlight of my day haha, Awesome mate 👍

Yo Dave could I get the same Dani solo sound or John sounding distortions sound with a Boss DS1 and a Vox Wah ?, great video btw really helped me with the ending :')

You can get close using them but you really need the DS2. You need that turbo mode sound and also you need the gain boost of the WH10 wah. Thank you so much for watching and so happy you found the vid useful. :)

I saw your video on the Ibanez WH10 and you said that your substitute for the Ibanez was the Vox and you mentioned a few flaws in the reissue so should I do the same? Sorry to ask again I'm just OCD on what gear I buy haha

I would personally go for the vox but you'll need a pedal to boost the vox to make it more like the WH10. :)
