Dude, I have known how to play this song for years and this video was the last key to making it perfect. A little practice of adding a few “upstrokes” to my original way of playing it and now its perfect. It also makes sense because in the music video, I notice John picking upwards on the strings. I’ve studied Frusciante probably more than any other guitarist over the last 20 years. I finally got to see John live with RHCP, where I had a front row seat to my guitar hero. He didn’t disappoint… I love playing Frusciante licks at home just chilling in the studio. I’m inspired by JF more than just about any other guitarist in the world
It's so good to see someone playing this song correctly for a change. I've seen so many people play this song wrong that I began to think I was doing it wrong. But it always sounded so right. (And I've watched John play it like this, although he does mix it up at times). I'm glad I stuck to this way of playing it. Great video dude, keep it up!
I play very much like John. He and Hendrix are two of my biggest influences. You should break down the solo in the song could've lied. Very interesting solo in many ways and absolutely fun to play.
I’ve seriously skipped watching every guitar video of this song until now. your teaching style is superb! By the way, if you’re ever in L.A. I’ll take you to that bridge!
Interesting that you interpret the Emaj7 at the verse end as adding suspense. I've always thought it sounds like a relaxing break before the chorus. Great video as always.
The first really difficult thing I learnt to play was Little Wing. Then Under the Bridge came along and it was instantly clear how to play it. So much of John Fruciante, SRV and John Mayer originates from that. You will know it, when you hear it..
Frusciante is the king of nuances that make a big difference. I am trying to get every little detail of a lot of songs from Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Stadium Arcadium and I think it's a good think to improve your playing. I think his funky rhythms are just brilliant like the bridge of Hump de Bump and the chorus of Charlie.
You are by far the most captivating teacher out there. You made me realize, i already got the melody in my head! what i need is to know how, to combine "Fret with Head" ;) TY SOOOO MUCH Paul
I‘d kill to have your right arm. The way you kinda not move your wrist but still have incredible fine control of what the pick does to the strings. So much control and steeze. Hard to put into words. I come back to this video every once in a while just to see that technique in action on the up beats =D
Froosh on this track reminds me alot of Mike McCready w/ Pearl Jam on Yellow Leadbetter. Very loose and Hendrix-y, and like this, mostly clean but still played pretty aggressively for a slower song.
I always consider myself a bang average guitarist but I'm surprised to learn I've been playing this riff right before ever watching this video so there's that.
Me too, it's one of the few songs I know how to play 100% like the original. But that's because I love playing this song, everytime I pick up my guitar
I've studied him for years he plays a Hendrix/smoke on the water style I Love the em7th but once you learn his style it completely changes the way you play watch Navarro play it wrong at Woodstock 94 I'm glad someone is giving John the recognition he deserves show how to play soul to squeeze took me years to figure out right never knew the solo was a steel though would Love to have a conversation with John just about his current influences the man always blew my mind in how he plays and turned me own to so much music
Thanks so much for taking the time to explain. Sometimes tab can be hard to understand but the way you have broken it down makes so much more sense. Many thanks!
Paul, i follow you on YT since long ago, and i Ve been Always impressed by the clear and on focus way to explain and teach music. What makes you very impressive and out of the crowd, Is the very High quality of your lessons. You are the best teacher online imho, and there's no One better i would like to learn Guitar from than you.
This song is literally why I picked up the guitar. I am surprised you skipped the intro, which is the best part. Regarding the intro: In the recording, the high notes on the B string are overdubbed. That is not to say that it's impossible to play it live with the simultaneous notes, but the way the notes ring out until the next chord change is impossible without overdubbing.
This song is so much fun to deconstruct and you did an amazing job on that verse. Have you thought about doing the same with the second verse? There are some great variations in that verse that bring in some additional techniques that are a blast to learn.
You can do it with your ring finger but I use my *Binky*! 😂 Great video Paul! I struggled with this song so much when I was younger, but lacked the patience to persevere and learn it properly, devolving to just strumming it out in a feel-good way. This analysis has got me in the mood to revisit it!
This video makes your channel valuable, seldom do I see ppl analyze a song this way and this really help us understand how a guitarist think. Thank you so much
That riff reminds of my younger years. when things were easier... i was discussing this song with a kid at school when i first heard this song on the radio when it first came out. i think i was in grade 5. around 11 years old. oh man, wish i could go back
Under the bridge is one of those songs that can truly speak to your heart even without the lyrics. I think we all have a song that we always play when we embrace our guitars, for me that song is under the bridge.
That one video where John very slowly plays through the parts of under the bridge is what made me play the guitar. I needed to be able to create that sound for myself.
Yes there are definitely parts in this song that people struggle with for it was the intro and I needed to do it with a capo. It still sounds absolutely fine like that but it's not correct. If I'm playing this song on an acoustic guitar I still need to do it that way. The messed up part is I'm quite good with chords and have always been fast at changing between them. But that part sometimes gives me trouble
This is a hard song . . I can play songs that sound harder . But in true John form he has a way of making his hardest riffs sound learnable . I struggled with intro but the chords and then hammers in Between . Grrr
Just in time! I was learning how to play this song a couple of days ago (following a cifra club tutorial). I'm a huge Frusciante fan. Your tips were very useful. Love your videos man, greetings from Perú
He's the last of a dying breed hope I get to see him rejoin someday I was learning this and tears in heaven at the same time when I was a kid and the intro made me so mad I quit for a while in the intro there is also an overdub of a ringing string took me years to figure that out u can play all you want like John but you're not john I hope he rejoins soon and saves the world from rocks death that way the foo fighters can retire

I’ve studied Frusciante probably more than any other guitarist over the last 20 years. I finally got to see John live with RHCP, where I had a front row seat to my guitar hero. He didn’t disappoint…
I love playing Frusciante licks at home just chilling in the studio. I’m inspired by JF more than just about any other guitarist in the world
Greatest Outro Ever: John Frusciante RHCP Don't Forget Me (Live at Reading & Leeds Festival) boo-yah! 🤘
Great video as always.
ak342593 suspense because your ear wants it to resolve
@@pacificdrumma Exactly. It does not sound like an ending. It has to go somewhere.
I love how wholesome you are dude. Great channel and great work. You are also an excellent guitar player!
I saw John Frusciante and I just clicked. Did anyone see his video at the Ramone’s tribute?
Felix Scott Yea definitely he is awesome. Wonder how his Guitar Skills are today...since he went more into electric music genre.
I saw that, it's awesome to see him again
@@niclaslbng just as good if not better, it's still all over his electronic productions, listen to Ratiug and Guitar both onto PBX.
@@niclaslbng his electronic tracks are full of guitars, layered pieces, solos.
Seeing a video of John in 2019 just a few days ago is such a treat to all of his fans. I'm just glad he's doing well.
I appreciate your patience and how obvious your love for the material is. I enjoy your videos and content, thank you!
The first really difficult thing I learnt to play was Little Wing. Then Under the Bridge came along and it was instantly clear how to play it. So much of John Fruciante, SRV and John Mayer originates from that. You will know it, when you hear it..
Yes agree completely
I hit the like button as lightly as possible. Nicely done Paul 👌🤟👍
Probably the best guitar video on youtube
Really great video, I watched John showing how to play this but could never get the rhythm right. Thanks man you’ve made my day
Frusciante is the king of nuances that make a big difference.
Fruciente changed my love and lead my off a bad path, the happiest day of my life is when I bought my first Stratocaster to be like him
He changed your life but you can’t even spell Frusciante?
@@acemew3255 that's right. Frusiscuante changed my life too.
@@funkymonks8333 lol
Me too man you know Anthony bought him the strat with the rosewood neck that's all beat up
The recent news inspired me to go pick up a telecaster yesterday!
I‘d kill to have your right arm. The way you kinda not move your wrist but still have incredible fine control of what the pick does to the strings. So much control and steeze. Hard to put into words. I come back to this video every once in a while just to see that technique in action on the up beats =D
Good guy Paul, hints he's gonna dis bad players, actually gives the best verse tutorial of Under the Bridge on YT.
The best breakdown of this song on the net.Super detailed on chords and picking.
Froosh on this track reminds me alot of Mike McCready w/ Pearl Jam on Yellow Leadbetter. Very loose and Hendrix-y, and like this, mostly clean but still played pretty aggressively for a slower song.
Wow, yes. Spot-on. I didn't put that together until now. Awesome connection
How anyone can dislike this video I don’t understand. Mr. Davids you are by far one of the best.
I always consider myself a bang average guitarist but I'm surprised to learn I've been playing this riff right before ever watching this video so there's that.
KillCole same lol but it was still a great video
What a classic song by the Chili Peppers. Thanks dude for the nostalgia. 🤙
Thanks for the video! I am happy to see people appreciating John as he is in my opinion one of the best guitarists of all time!
"I've always been a lazy bugger at heart" - Tony Iommi
Thanks so much for taking the time to explain. Sometimes tab can be hard to understand but the way you have broken it down makes so much more sense. Many thanks!
I learned this song by putting together like 5 different tabs lol
That is how it usually is. Almost no tab on the internet are 100% correct, especially not those who claims to be "perfect"
Lol
I learned it out of a guitar world magazine back in the 90s before internet...I was 17..lol
@@wesleyAlan9179 That was a very good year
@@kswannie ,right on!✌
I like your videos because the are a tutorial, theory lesson and analysis all in one. Makes it so much easier to get your head round it.
You're so cool. That was nice to listen and I'm enjoyed to watch...
Frusciate a genius.
This channel is great! ✌
Thx 😉👌
Paul, i follow you on YT since long ago, and i Ve been Always impressed by the clear and on focus way to explain and teach music.
You are obviously a great player, but nowadays It s not the most distinctive part of a youtuber musician, because there are lots of very good players online.
I KNEW IT!! it’s so fucking hard to play with the notes ringing out
@@Harrisabd Right?? that goddam hammer on while holding the full chord is impossible unless your fingers are lighting quick lol
@@evangelionl0vr857 I almost want to capo it when we play live and just lightning speed toss it into the crowd once the intro goes into the verse 😂
This song is so much fun to deconstruct and you did an amazing job on that verse. Have you thought about doing the same with the second verse? There are some great variations in that verse that bring in some additional techniques that are a blast to learn.
You can do it with your ring finger but I use my *Binky*! 😂
Great video Paul! I struggled with this song so much when I was younger, but lacked the patience to persevere and learn it properly, devolving to just strumming it out in a feel-good way. This analysis has got me in the mood to revisit it!
I feel like I should have paid for all this great info. gold!
This video makes your channel valuable, seldom do I see ppl analyze a song this way and this really help us understand how a guitarist think. Thank you so much
If you own a strat you have to know how to play little wing and under the bridge .. thats the rule
dimihamuzu but under the bridge was recorded on a Jaguar lmao
Hahaha
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
lol
That riff reminds of my younger years. when things were easier... i was discussing this song with a kid at school when i first heard this song on the radio when it first came out. i think i was in grade 5. around 11 years old. oh man, wish i could go back
Paul is one of my favorite UA-camrs. Jimi and Johnny are two of my favorite guitarists. Under The Bridge is one of my favorite songs. 🎸🤘🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤️
Thurman Juan this my favorite comment. Just cus..
Was gonna comment and say “PLAY IT HOWEVER YOU WANNA PLAY IT” then I heard your comment at the end and instantly became a fan of yours. Take my money
You need to collab with Dave Simpson 🎸
man i really like that you give some more emphasis to such an underrated guitarrist
Under the bridge is one of those songs that can truly speak to your heart even without the lyrics. I think we all have a song that we always play when we embrace our guitars, for me that song is under the bridge.
Dude, your videos are wonderful. You can see the level you expect from yourself in everything you do. Hats off Paul
Please try and play ‘love spreads’ by The Stone Roses. Most badass guitar riff ever that no one has covered correctly!!!
Yes, please do! What a tune that is!
That one video where John very slowly plays through the parts of under the bridge is what made me play the guitar. I needed to be able to create that sound for myself.
So many play it wrong for two reasons:
1) Are too lazy to study it in detail
2) It's not an easy riff, if you want to include the embelishments...
@UCmEJr1-ZKASGTQO1zGPMvSg I believe that both intro and verse are challenging, at least for an intermediate player...
@@hitmanhatton i don't think you always have to pinch on the D chord. I know John doesn't. This is what I struggle with the most
Hardest part is the hammer on on the intro if u can hear it
This is a hard song .
He can literally never rejoin the band.
