He is probably very happy with music nowadays because if you look lower than surface level then you find gems. Instead of bitching about bad music, go and find the good music. Trust me, there is more of the good than the bad.
Carlos Sierra I suppose it's more like "John went to hell to lose five years of what he was capable of before that and desire death, and he came back with his face down, which is a miracle". No one should desire and go for such sound. It only causes hell and trouble, and it seems like hell isn't supportive, at all. I heard the sound and it was likely to destroy my life completely and effectively. I shouldn't have gone off the heavenly way i was going just to hear a sound (going to the tops of painful destruction). To think that it makes you experienced your life valuable... it's not nice. there's no basic reason to end your life and memory, coming back injured. It hurts. you lose your friends and have a hard and sad time trying to be in a world, or something. not to mention getting work together. Go home and think about it. So i wouldn't agree about the "victorious" part. (i'm not John and I don't know him personally, it's just what i felt and experienced, also had listened to some of his songs. People actually ask me that.) it still really was a problem, plenty of them. don't do that.
I totally disagree with this, John was making incredible music before his addiction. All I see here is a junky looking to justify his choices. Life is hard enough, you have to keep your shit wired to make it through and getting fucked up on heroin is the worst thing you can do. I’m glad John made it back, but I don’t think this period served him as anything more than a lesson in humility.
I'm with the Sierra-Dude on this one. Seen him live back in 03 and he had this glow of something pure on him. Guess he went somewhere else in the time of this interview at the cost of immense self-inflicted pain. Left a part of him whereever he went and came back with some knowledge of self and his music that only someone who truely suffered can have. But yeah, there's nothing glorious about addiction, it's only a symptom of lacking self-love anyways.
@Rob Sutherland You my son are a complete moron. If you read my comment you would've seen that I don't glorify him taking drugs. I just said, he went through a lot of pain with his addiction and overcame it. Dealing with pain adds depth to your beeing - wether it is because of loosing someone you love or something egotistical like addiction - because during addiction you're loosing yourself. If you had any knowledge of life you wouldn't have to talk so badly of him or junkies in general. You never know what pushes them into this self-abuse. Living means dealing with this kind of issues and overcoming them, which he did. Drugs can give you knowledge because they change the frame of your consciousness, so you can break through negative or stupid thought patterns. But there i'm not talking about addiction - especially heroin is a terrible addictive drug, which destroys the body and the mind. When I'm talking about something pure that he had then it was his decision to live because he was almost dead. That being said, eat a fat dick you ignorant sucker.
You can't even tell he's the same person. He looks like a ghost. And I'd point out him talking about how there is no good music around anymore, and just tell everyone to keep that in mind when they make the same statement. Every generation says the same thing, and then the later generations talk about how great the music was and how it's not any good anymore. There is still good music out there (and likely always will be), it just goes through periods of being mains stream and not, so you have to look for it a little harder.
i don't see this man as someone who you shouldn't be. It's someone you don't want to be, because it clearly involves tremendous suffering. But he still speaks out against inducing trauma in children as being worse than drugs and is so reflective in his own way, I think there's different examples of what you Shouldn't be
Layne ,imo, was the greatest vocalist n songwriter EVER! Can't listen to Nutshell without crying.Until I got addicted to heroin in '94 I didn't even realize he was on drugs.I was so naive about drugs, heroin in particular. Clean 12 years now n heroin is the devil disguised as an angel promising you heaven.
When he was lying on the ground it was super scary for me because I thought to myself, "that could have been his corpse." This video kind of terrifies me. His state of mind was kinda beautiful though. He's always had such sweet intentions and I really don't think he knew that he was hurting others (and himself) some of the stuff he was saying was truly beautiful.
I actually shed real tears after watching this interview. He's such a beautiful person. I can't believe he has any veins left... but he wouldn't be the same John without his drug use, and he is so brilliant. I'm at a loss for words. Just wow.
Seeing John as messed up on drugs during the interview literally brought tears to me eyes. He has over come so much, and I look up to him. He has truly come around from old habits and made better of himself. Heart breaking :'(
That's because when you're a junkie you always lie, and try to justify your habit. You even lie about stupid shit that means nothing. Idk why but that's how it is. I was a heroin addict for about 4 years
@@rayjr62 like saying you don't think its a big deal that your friend died from a lethal dose of drugs you gave them? No way he really believes that unless he's a piece of garbage.
I bought Niandra LaDes around this time, 1994, and was blown away by it. I knew Frusciante was good, but I found out he was a Genius with this album. Untitled#7 (i think) melted my spine. Sure I was sad at his fall, but finding out about his resurgence with the peppers in 97 was a wonderful feeling indeed. was worth the wait. He's beyond authentic.
I was addicted to heroin for a while and seeing this gives me hope. I've been where john is and seeing that he was able to overcome it shows that it can really be done. Especially since he's my biggest guitar influence
I understand John so much more after seeing this. The state he is in doesn't shock or upset me, its exactly what he wanted to do at that moment in his life. The fact that he made it out the other side is incredible. Kurt was on a similar path but got lost.
He barely survived this addiction and I am glad he did, because John came from the darkest depths of destruction and yet still puts out the most powerful and inspiring lyrics anyone could ever listen too!! His figures and his passionate euphoric riffs make anybody who listens to his music a happy person!
he looks so different. so unhealthy. It makes me so sad. when is shows him in 1991 and him in 1994 its so fucking crazy. And when he admits to being a junkie and the fact that he loves it... I just die a little bit.
I really miss the days of everybody getting together in record stores, and discovering new music based on word of mouth - so much more social, personal, intimate, and interactive... a new album would provide months of joy and memories for an entire group of friends to share... such magical times
+Chris Meier It's a good thing that they're here for people to view. Especially alongside videos where the person involved is healthier or at least healthier looking. It is definitely best to stay away from hard drugs. Some you can start, but never fully escape. Best wishes.
thePraisedBry yeah ok man. I started doing heroin because all my idols made great music on it, thinking i would make great music and it ended up destroying my life and all my relationships. But yeah I guess this guy is a "pussy" for not wanting that.
don't look at him like he's some kind of and exhibit in a museum, or a nut, or someone who needs your fucking pity. just listen to what he says. there are things to think about, if you listen.
for real... if u have ever experienced addiction its easy to relate where his farfetched thoughts and perceived crazy ass views are coming from. just a way to justify his drug use when deep down he knew how fucked up he was. at some point or another every drug addict sort of accepts that their entire life will be revolved around drugs and pretty much accept dying an early death or dying with that next hit it just doesnt matter.
Yyeaah no, as an ex junkie of 10 years (3 years clean)... if you want to listen to his words, listen to him whilst clean. Like 70% of what he says here is him trying to justify his addiction.
People who want this video to be taken down obviously didn't watch it. It shows John's sincerest thoughts about life and death and drugs of course. Damn, there must've been a lot going through that head. Would've been nice to smoke up a joint and talk to him about all kinds of stuff.
this is a guy who worked so hard to make his dream come true, only to realize it wasn't at all what it seemed to be. he saw the spiritual/demonic side to the music industry, and the demons caused him to lose his mind. I don't really blame him.
In another interview after he’s back in the band he said that he realized that there were good ghosts and bad ghosts and through this time he had to learn how to tell which ghosts were truly there to help him and which ones were there to take advantage if him and trick him.
chippchipp1 Heroine is doing strange things with you... I totally agree with the wtf statement :D He was totally fucked up at this time but i like it in a strange way :(

No one chooses to have a mental illness. You have absolutely no idea what addiction is like. It's one of the most horrendous and cruel things a human being can possibly endure and the fact that this "dumbass" survived it in the state he was in shows he likely has more will than either of us combined.
He talks full bulshit at the most of time... And all of his oponion about everything is washed by the drugs... That's just a 5 years waste of life. I'm happy, becouse he has cleaned fast and keep making a beautiful music!
The end scene with him lying on the floor, and the beach scene right after with the music still playing illustrated for me the kind of paradox that this music and his art through that times represents; I mean it clearly looks destructive how he lies there, and the beach - the world outside - is healthy and fresh, yet his world inside his house with the music he creates builds up an energy that you don´t find outside... it really amazes me how ambivalent his time back then was.
***** Due to an inoperable spinal tumor, i have been on an increasing level of strong opioids that amount to clinical grade heroin. i would imagine that my dose after 10 years of this, is enough to kill 3 junkies a day. There is no fun, no buzz no nothing in this-long term, aside from its pain alleviating effect. People get hooked by that "first feeling", or the first dozen or so times they may play with these drugs, but with time, the only thing they are doing is avoiding withdrawals. We once came to visit my folks when we lived out of state, left my meds on the kitchen counter at home. After 3 days of more insane hell than i care to describe, i contacted my doc, who got in contact with my folks doc (mine too before i moved), and they filled scripts for the remaining 4 days we would be there. The junkies that die, are the ones foolish enough to believe you can catch that dragon again, the o.d....Goodnight, Vienna. i'd love nothing more than to not have to take any meds, but i also have epilepsy to go along with the tumor and 3 collapsed discs. Slowly, as pain levels rise, dosage is increased. i was blessed that i didn't fall in love with my meds, they are only a tool to keep me from screaming agony. In fact, i've often forgotten a dose or 2, anymore than that, i'd begin sweating, but feel cold...then i remember quick. The best thing i can say to any and everyone, from long, personal experience, is, this is no route to happiness. At my point, it merely allows me to function on a very diminished level. i am limited to 5-10 lbs lifting. No matter how fun it may seem a couple of times, there is nothing waiting on the other side than overwhelming, abject misery.
The whole video is terrifying. It's like his soul has been absorbed by the heroin. I'm glad he managed to break free of his addiction. They should play this to kids as a warning to the reality of taking of hard drugs like crack, meth and heroin.
mrbsred1 Thank you very much! Kindness is never lost if we seek it, and i truly appreciate your kind words immensely. i work very hard to have a positive attitude, and strive to live the self-sacrificing life my Momma brought me up to. i am generally happy, sure there are bad days, but i have a wonderful family, and many hobbies to keep me busy. i will be just fine as long as there are kind folks like you in the world. On the video...Seeing John like that..its like not being alive at all, i am thrilled he's in recovery, and i pray he never falls off the path. Be Well, mrbsred1 -dave
i wish these videos were taken down, unfortunately i remember showing my friends this about 11 years ago, one of my friends became a heroin and opiate addict and he sadly passed away. This video shows john when he was so depressed and down... it doesnt represent who he is or how he is now, he overcame drugs and never looked back, he is a hero to me.
because its unfortunate that somebody took a camera and documented john at his worst depression, you don't get to see other people when their in a severe depression, knowing that he went down this path should be enough for you to be inspiried to never take drugs, you shouldnt have tyo see john almost dead because you WANT to see how much hes changed, you dont have the right to pry in on somone else's life and judge him, anthony said he has never seen these videos and I agree with him.
Hiding the past does not delete it. What you have stated has got to be one of the most ridiculous statements I’ve ever heard. The only way to grow as a person and become strong from the harsh ways of life is to look at it in all it’s disgusting state and say, “I will not succumb to your evil deeds, I will fight against you and will be victorious.” Blaming your troubles on anything but yourself is wrong and a bit narcissistic.
This is exactly it. I wouldn’t want to change anything. Every time I watch this I cry at the same points in joy and ecstasy. I love you, John. You’re the truth.
Very heavy and sobering interview. Every word that came of his mouth has such heavy ideas behind. It gives me chills every time and makes me wonder about my own life decisions and views. I consider him one of the best artists that ever walked this earth. His music is right on the top.
When you listen to this interview and interviews before this, it really shows how John had always felt like he didnt have a place and had low self-esteem. For somebody with such great talent it makes you wonder how he was treated when he was younger to develop that self image. Thank god he survived this heroin phase and I hope he is at peace with himself. John you have greatness, look at the people who have come to watch this
Its refreshing to see a real interview for a change instead of some celebrity hawking their latest record from a rehashed list of talking points prepped by a PR manager. This shows a great artist at a particular "low" point in his life working thru real issues, sharing his thoughts, inspirations, creative processes, and being real for the camera. My respect for JF and what he has worked thru cannot be measured. Some may see this and condemn the film crew for taking advantage, but truly- everyone hits low points in their life. I look at it as proof there is hope.
Depression is a terrible disease. People who hasn't suffered from it don't know that it's about. No one chooses to get it, just like cancer, and depression will kill you. It's terrible to judge and blame people for getting sick and dying from it. Lack of knowledge... I hope people some day will understand that and stop shaming people suffering from a horrible horrible disease.
probably because he was trying to act crazier than he really was to become a living rock legend to impressionable kids...he kind of gives it away (no pun intended) when he's talking about how he thought cocaine was cool because of David Bowie, who also went crazy on drugs and which he thought was his coolest period. So, he was just playing that part when he got big enough for anyone to give a shit. Lots of bullshit in this video.
This interview has an whole other point of view on the whole Nirvana experience as that he has told in the Nirvana interview (?) He says in this one that he hates Nirvana's music but in 2003 he said that it has been an absolute favourite and that he has the whole collection.
If you ever feel down, feel like the world is a shitty place with nothing to look forward to, and feel like things will only get worse in life, just remember that you live in the timeline where John Frusciante beat his addictions and became a guitar god. He said there wasn't much good music in 1994, imagine what he thinks in 2017
Yeah so true. I wish we could go back to that time so much great music back then
I loved the music of that time.ALICE IN CHAINS!!
Start of Brit pop!
what an original thing to say fuckface
He is probably very happy with music nowadays because if you look lower than surface level then you find gems. Instead of bitching about bad music, go and find the good music. Trust me, there is more of the good than the bad.
I still cant believe he go to this point. So glad he got clean and continued making great music. True inspiration. John is a legend
It's not as bad as " it looks".... though he could use some time with soap and water....
John went to hell to find a sound, and came back victorious.
People actually ask me that.)
it still really was a problem, plenty of them. don't do that.
I think he already had a great sound. Then went to hell. And then came back as fucking jesus lol.
Fuck he really was in a dark dark place.
That's were a lot of beauty comes from.
Doubt it. Took controlled heroine.

Just wow.

I know, but keep in mind that this was about 20 years ago. John is now clean and sober
Uh, this interview was from 1994. It is now 2014. He has been clean and sober for decades.

He barely survived this addiction and I am glad he did, because John came from the darkest depths of destruction and yet still puts out the most powerful and inspiring lyrics anyone could ever listen too!! for real... if u have ever experienced addiction its easy to relate where his farfetched thoughts and perceived crazy ass views are coming from. just a way to justify his drug use when deep down he knew how fucked up he was. at some point or another every drug addict sort of accepts that their entire life will be revolved around drugs and pretty much accept dying an early death or dying with that next hit it just doesnt matter.
Yyeaah no, as an ex junkie of 10 years (3 years clean)... if you want to listen to his words, listen to him whilst clean. Like 70% of what he says here is him trying to justify his addiction.
You know you're on drugs when there is a vintage Martin next to you and you play some old Harmony.

Actually John bought that for Flea's daughter Clara in 1992 you can see flea carry it in the intro to the documentary for blood sugar.
I'm picturing this in my head and it's making me laugh
The interviewer was trying to save him
this is a guy who worked so hard to make his dream come true, only to realize it wasn't at all what it seemed to be. he saw the spiritual/demonic side to the music industry, and the demons caused him to lose his mind. I don't really blame him.
drew cobain
The part where he says he did hear ghosts throughout all the record says it all

Денчо Стоянов most of the stuff he said are thing he still think so ..
He is such a smart man who is so straight to the point about why he does the things he does.
17:05 The most terrifying quote of a drug addict.
***** I wished I had something to say that would help, but this time I am lost for words. You are a very brave and immensely strong person!
The whole video is terrifying. It's like his soul has been absorbed by the heroin. I'm glad he managed to break free of his addiction. They should play this to kids as a warning to the reality of taking of hard drugs like crack, meth and heroin.

it hurts to watch this.. then again thinking of how strong he was to be able to come out of this is a great thing.
i wish these videos were taken down, unfortunately i remember showing my friends this about 11 years ago, one of my friends became a heroin and opiate addict and he sadly passed away. This video shows john when he was so depressed and down... it doesnt represent who he is or how he is now, he overcame drugs and never looked back, he is a hero to me.
Why take the video down and alter the truth? Without seeing what he once was how can we appreciate who he is today?
because its unfortunate that somebody took a camera and documented john at his worst depression, you don't get to see other people when their in a severe depression, knowing that he went down this path should be enough for you to be inspiried to never take drugs, you shouldnt have tyo see john almost dead because you WANT to see how much hes changed, you dont have the right to pry in on somone else's life and judge him, anthony said he has never seen these videos and I agree with him.
So how would removing these videos help the problem?

Hiding the past does not delete it. What you have stated has got to be one of the most ridiculous statements I’ve ever heard.
He needed to talk to somebody about his childhood trauma, you can hear it. The underlying factor in these artists on drugs is childhood trauma.
On the upside, this interview is two decades old, and John's been off of drugs for over 15 years.

It was TRUE though, I love Kurt as well, but what John said was the fucking truth
