    Oh, nice video. I guess i was doing his wah lick wrongly, so thanks for your help.
    The next lesson will be songs right? I have some suggestions xP. His final jam at chorzow polland is pretty good, also his solo songs like Look on and unreachable are great!. If you want, you can teach us also how to play super songs like get on top, parallel universe (live? :D), throw way your television + don't you ever leave and funky monks :3.
    Thanks for your great help and i can't wait for the next lesson :D

    Is there any tips that you would give to someone looking to pursue a career in music? Not sure if you'd be willing to answer this but are your gigs your only source of income and what would an income be like if I was to only rely on music? I understand if you don't want to answer them questions but I thought I'd ask as I am trying to find out as much info as possible about how I could live and make an income playing music. And what are your thoughts on college for guitar? Thanks in advance J

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  8 років тому +3

      Unfortunately in this day and age its nearly impossible to make a living out of music without having to literally do everything. Gigging and making and selling music no longer give you anything that could be considered an income that you can live off. Plus i struggle to even get gigs. My advice to make a living out of music is to do anything and everything you can from teaching, repairs, guitar setups, gigs, session work. Basically anything you can get your hands on really. The music business is a mess and its only getting harder and harder to get a foot in the door so to say. I wish you all the luck in the world.

      Dave Simpson wow thanks for the inspiration dave😐😂 just kidding. Sounds like the music industry is really a shambles at the minute. Which really is a shame when there are extremely talented musicians out there, such as yourself, who may never get the opportunity to show their talents to the world. It's all a money game out there it seems. Very disheartening to look at from the outside.... anyway that's my rant over. I wish you all the luck in the world also. Continue what you're doing on UA-cam Dave. You are very entertaining and I hope your channel continues to grow because you really do put a lot of effort into making great videos. All the best from a fan in Ireland. Jake 👍🏼

    I didn’t notice the genius of Frusciante until the 90’s were over and John and a few other musicians really stood out as conduits for the magic in the music. I love how you play. Hi Dave - long time viewer here. Super appreciative for all of your content. Thanks so much. I'm still really struggling with the crazy wah sound and was wondering if you had any comments to help me specifically in relation to the picking. Are you going down, down, up? Then restart. Or down up down, then restart? How are you picking the strings? Any info would be appreciated.

  • @mairinger80
    @mairinger80 8 років тому +2

    it took me 2-3 weeks of 2hrs daily mindnumbing practicing just the can't stop riff to get it down. So patience and persistence is really key. The first day you sit there thinking there is no way you're ever going to sound like the real thing. 2hrs of hitting 1 note... arrgghh... but it's so satisfying when you start the next day and you feel the small but gradual progress. I was so much looking forward to the next session because I KNEW I would be a bit closer than yesterday and keep getting closer. I play it the same way John does for the most part, except for the low E string where I switch to your way. I still need to loosen up the right hand a bit more. Also worth noting that when playing the 7-9 thing the second time, it's important to hit all strings muted 1 time between the 7 and 9, to keep the groove on... Anyway, this is the best video out there for learning Can't stop. Thanks Dave!

    Did you relic that Strat yourself? If so, can you explain your technique and how you did the same wear patterns as John's '62 strat? I did relic the strat myself yeps. I use craft knives to get the wear as precise as I could. I basically just scrape away the finish. It took a long long time but a really sharpe craft knife worked the best. :)

    • @thedavesimpson

      I don't think its possible to narrow it down to 10. I feel you need to learn as much as you can of that one artist if you want to play like them. You have to get inside there head and hear what they hear so to say and that takes years of learning everything they do. Sorry. I know this isn't very helpful.

    My problem when muting like John and everyone else who plays this, is that I get harmonics off the mutes. Harmonics destroy the percussive strike. For example in Can't stop, when I play the "E" note (9th fret on the G string) I mute the D string on the 9th and it's harmonic city. But they crop up everywhere that's just one example. Strat, bridge pickup, medium gain EL84 amp. RINNNNG

      No one can replace John but that doesn't mean people are not going to try. And at the end of the day he's a hero to many, Including me and theres nothing wrong with wanting to be like him or play like him.
      John was a Hillel wannabe at somepoint.
      Jimi Hendrix was a Buddy Guy and BB King wannabe at somepoint.
      Many of our heroes go the same route and thats the point.

    this is probably the best video on his shreddy wah technique i've found! i've been considering doing a video on it myself because i can't find any out there. there are so many different ways to do it. sometimes he'll do what you're doing and pick precisely between those two strings, other times he'll tremolo pick/strum fast and add the high e too. i've never seen him too the traditional sweep picking method of doing it. there are also of course other repetitive licks like that he does which are great

    As we all know John is a very expressive guitarist particularly in his solos. If you hear the solos on the 91/92 Blood Sugar tour something is definItely up eg you can tell he wasn't happy. Could you tell the same with the Stadium Arcadium tour? I don't know the background as to why they got in a second guitarist (Josh) to fill the sound because they never did before.

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  7 років тому

      You could tell John was bored during the last few Chili's shows of the Stadium tour. He just looks fed up and mainly stays near his pedal board and his face is very different to earlier shows. Thank you for watching. :)

    Hello! Great, great, great channel!! Really glad I found you. I'm wondering if you might feel like do some kind of lesson/cover of can't stop and the interlude (or what it's called). The thing before the solo. There is a point about 3 minutes into the song where he plays and picking notes that sounds great, but I can't figure out a good way to even start learning it the right way. That would be awesome. I haven't seen it in any of your videos I think, so if you think it would be fun that would be much appriciated :)

    Hey there. These JF videos are wonderful. Thanks so much for doing them, and PLEASE keep em coming. A quick question. When you do the wah shred thing you show at the end, what it the picking pattern you use while doing it? Down up down up down etc? It is so fast when you do it that I can't make out how you pick it. Thanks so much, good sir

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  7 років тому

    Awesome video was always Dave!
    John is a great school actually! I can't remember seeing myself practicing hours and hours to achieve the muting right hand technique and when my friends asked me how to do it I'd say "I have no idea how I'm doing it, it just happened"
    If you watch tons of RHCP jams and concerts you will get the sense of groove and you will also learn how to jam, it will become instinct. That's why they are my favorite band.

    Dave, on the Can't Stop riff when hitting notes on the G string for the second time in slowmo you hit em up/down, but at normal tempo you do up/up? Up Down doesn't seem right, or does it?

      You're right. Several months ago, I realized there isn't a single 'fast' guitar part in the Californication album (except Around the World intro, which is still playable). Hitting the right notes to form a nice simple melody makes me emotional in a good way.

    I knew can't stop and i knew how to do the crazy wah thing although i often like to add in the 10th fret of the high e together with the 10th fret of the b string when i do it instead of just the g string and the b string. I basically strum all the three highest strings but the two ways basically sound the same anyways. The thing i really got out of this video was the if you have to ask riff. I knew the chord and that but i was really struggling with the rhythm but not anymore, so thank you!
