    Dave, do you or the other fru-heads here know where I can find john’s pedal-chain order? I’m hoping to find the exact order of his signal chain on his most current board. I’ve seen photos of how he has peals arranged but I can’t be sure of the order of the signal chain. If not, does anyone have recommendations?

    Hey Dave, I am having trouble with the thumb over chords. When I bar the 2/3 highest strings with my index finger the strings get muted when playing the chord. I was wondering if you first had this issue and/or know of a way to fix the problem I am having. Thanks!

  • @aleron27
    @aleron27 8 років тому

    dave ive got a few questions, so in the beginning when your working on these chords with the thumb is your hand suppose to hurt? and how do u keep your fingers from muting the other string when you are working with the thumb. And finally will your eventually adjust to the different type of hand placements on the guitar. Ps thank u for this awesome vid Frusciante is by far my fav guitarist.

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  8 років тому

      It can hurt but you want to be careful you don;t strain your hand. IF it starts to hurt stop and come back to it another day. Don;t keep going if its causing you pain and eventually your hand will learn what position works best for you. :) Thank you so much and happy you like the vids. :)

  • @tobyhallitt7923
    @tobyhallitt7923 7 років тому

    Hi Dave, I know this is a late comment, love your videos by the way. Just a couple of questions. Regarding the thumb-over technique, I'm fairly competent at using my thumb to root notes on the E-string in order to play E shaped barre chords. However, whenever I try and use the same technique for A-shaped barre chords as you described in this video, I can never get the chord to sound clean and it feels uncomfortable (particularly closer to the headstock of the guitar). Do you have any tips or handexercises to overcome this? Or will it just get better with time and persistance? Why is it necessary to play A-shaped chords this way in order to play like John?
    Also, when you are soloing or playing individual notes in funk guitar, you appear to be very 'loose' with your right hand (and I mean that in the best of ways). Is this because you're muting all the other strings? for example, in scar tissue.
    I'd really appreciate a little video on a crash course in hand positioning, picking techniques etc.
    Thanks a bunch, keep it up :)

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  7 років тому +1

      It will get better with time. It just takes time. Your hand will learn. Its not really necessary but it gives you the right kind of sound. You don;t have to do it to play like John though. But it does get you a little closer to the man. I am very loose with my right hand and yeps it is because i am muting with the left hand. Gives me that freedom to hit the guitar without worry of it getting out of hand. Thank you very much for watching and i hope this answered your questions. :)

  • @keithmiller2085
    @keithmiller2085 7 років тому

    Hey Dave, you obviously have relatively big hands. I have really small hands which makes the hendrix style a little tough reaching over with my thumb whilst not muting the high e. Do you know if its just a learning curve and/or do you have any tips. Thanks!

    When i set my Orange Crush CR60C with your settings i nearly dont get any distortion in dirty mode. With activated Boss DS-2 on maxed out settings sound becomes very muddy and broken when im playing on neck pickup. with bridge pickup everything is fine
    i set Guitar --> Boss --> Ibanez --> Amp
    Do you have any suggestions?

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  7 років тому

      The CR60 and you will react differently to me so just try tweaking the mid range and maybe a little more gain. :)

    • @Kranscher1
      @Kranscher1 7 років тому

      Dave Simpson thanks for your answer Dave!
      I tried Many Settings and played with mids and Gain. Unfortunately it Turns Out, that in case of gain set at 3.5 or higher with activated Boss DS-2 maxed out my amp gets very muddy and sounds Like speaker doesn't manage the distortion anymore.
      Switching to Bridge Pickup helps a lot. On Neck Pickup only way to achieve a good Sound is to Set amp gain at 3 or lower.
      in those cases the amp doesn't break anymore and loses all of its dynamic response.
      im clueless

      @@m0ralesi42 I would suggest you need they two specific pedals, unless to get an expensive multi effects, like a Helix. I have tried a few different multi effects, Zoom(a few different ones) and Boss and they are great for modulation, delay, reverb but generally suck when it comes to distortion and fuzz.

    Dave, you're a pretty special UA-cam personality. I'm old enough to have seen the peppers upwards of 20x starting in 87 with Hillel in a bar with no more than 200 folks. I was lucky enough to have hung out with John in 1989 in an apartment one Friday night listening to Devo on cassette. He is an interesting player because his style changed based on his interests through the years - he listens to everything from electronic to experimental. Your content is so good. Thanks for these Dave, I have just bought my first American Strat 50s original in gold and loving it, I am just over two years in now and consider myself very close to intermediate. I want to play John style guitar and also learn how to get thumb over the top. So again thanks for these tutorials

      He said, to further extend on that, that he plays guitar to all kinds of music he listens to. Which I highly recommend everyone to start doing if they're not doing it yet - doesn't matter if its hip hop, drone, classical music, dubstep or ethno stuff. Just jam your guitars to whatever you're listening and you'll see your musical creativity increase

    i think that it's a good way to play in frusciante style but i know that i never will play like frusciante because everbybody has his own style and this is the diference between all the good guitarist in the world, so im gonna learn all i can't of all this god's of guitar and keep creating mi kind of music! so you have to found your "sound" your rhythms and the really sound you want to expose! *sorry for my bad english* have fun people

    Hey Dave, at the part where you are learning Under the Bridge and the pull offs(roughly around 18:00), I see that you are doing that whole thing quite different from the video where John does it. In the video with John(I’m sure you’ve seen it) he plays the B chord a bit different, like playing the 9th fret on the A string, he also seems to do the pull off with his pinky.
    So, I know you’ve studied Frusciante for a long time and I really admire your work since I’m a big fan myself. But it does confuse me that you don’t play Under the Bridge in the same way. Would my mind explaining?
