My grandfather was the HC of the '69 Lakers. Wilt bringing himself out of the game in game 7 was after a long list of him butting heads with my GF. They caught back up playing small but lost in the end. Some people blame my GF, Jerry West blamed himself as he always did for his performance in game 6. Obviously when you don't get along with arguably the greatest player in NBA history your tenure won't last long. But in 69 Wilt's reputation for being a playoff choker was well cemented. My GF agreed with Russell in his assessment of Wilt as being soft taking himself out of a game 7 with a title on the line, but I digress. For me, the most stinging playoff bust in Dallas was 1987 when the 55 win Mavs beat Seattle 151-129 in the first game, then dropped three in a row to be eliminated by the 39 win Sonics… the decider was played at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on the campus of U of Washington bc the Kingdome and Seattle Coliseum were booked. My grandfather was the HC of the '69 Lakers. Wilt bringing himself out of the game in game 7 was after a long list of him butting heads with my GF. They caught back up playing small but lost in the end. Some people blame my GF, Jerry West blamed himself as he always did for his performance in game 6. Obviously when you don't get along with arguably the greatest player in NBA history your tenure won't last long. But in 69 Wilt's reputation for being a playoff choker was well cemented. My GF agreed with Russell in his assessment of Wilt as being soft taking himself out of a game 7 with a title on the line, but I digress. The fact that Jerry West and my GF kept in touch and remained friends showed that we was indeed a good coach and mentor and the '69 Lakers was just a choke job in the end.
