It’s kinda insane to think a human could feasibly beat a game the fastest way possible. You always think to yourself, “i wonder when the world record will be beaten next”
Asking as someone who has zero prior knowledge of this subject, could you explain why you say 22 frames? At the end of this video, it is stated that the community is now only 2 frames away from perfection (that one fast acceleration in 8-4). Do the 22 frames refer to the best attempt at a full game speedrun, while the 2 frames refer to the best attempt at level 8-4 only?
@@lotuzz7409 yea I think when this video was made runners were 2 frames from perfection just on 8-4. It is 22 frames from a perfect full run of the game
And it gets me every time because it actually did happen instead of it being a fictional story these are real events that happened and that's what gets me.
Tbh, this game's perfect speedrun (as in, the TAS which aims to complete the game as fast as possible under any circumstance) is a pretty clean run, playing *almost* as intended by the developer. Some fast accel's and FPG's here and there, few incorrect warps - that's about it. This is nowhere close to speed runs that completely break the game and go out of bounds all the time such as Half-Life 2 or instances such as Oblivion / Morrowind / GTA San Andreas (skipping the entire god damn campaign!) SMB speedun still needs to play all the levels that a normal player would do to beat the game quickly. No glitchy skips there. Mario64 was much glitchier in that regard, as players gradually discovered ways to beat the game with less and less stars (out of 70 that is originally required). They brought this down to 30, then to 16, then to just 1 and finally to 0.
@@alewis514 I think he's more talking about the little things, like wall jumps from the single frame thinking mario is standing up, and similar stuff like that. there's many times where I never realized I programmed something weird like that and when shown was at a total loss because it never crossed my mind I was implementing. in this case it was used for hit detection and probably to stop a bug, so leaving it in just meant the game worked, not to mention the game is nearly 40 years old.
29:32 - For some reason, I find it hilarious how Niftski is rightfully celebrating while Mario is just standing there, forced to helplessly watch that Buzzy inexorably bearing down on him.
The line "After half a decade of this, the super mario bros community had made one thing very clear: Nothing was Impossible" feels both inspirational and somewhat wholesome.
@@honkhill1355 I doubt anyone expected it to be optimized to the point where every frame matters in one way or another Still, it's an incredible display of skill
@@unnoticed4571 You are right, though even if it wasn't this frame optimized it would still look insane being just a few second behind a TAS. People worked very hard to get here and the results are impressive.

And we have no way of knowing if he's legit or just trolling on his deathbed. Dude i wouldn't even be mad that would be like go out putting a smile on everyoen's face and make everyone lose their shit at the same time.
And now nifski has done almost all of this i a full run, only missing lightning 4-2 and a few frames here and there in 8-4. These guys are absolute legends
Competitive speedrunning really do be like that. Any minor optimization at the endgame, taken to its limit, leads to a borderline unbeatable gap of the tiniest of proportions.
Was watching it with the watch party on your twitch. An incredible video as always! Super Mario Bros. has been broken down so hard over the years, and it's just absolutely insane how close it is to being perfected. A monumental shoutouts to the entire Super Mario Bros. speedrunning community. Incredible work from everyone involved.
@Summoning Salt - I can't thank you enough. I was a runner in the Mega Man legends community but had fallen off of streaming for years. Your videos inspired me to continue speedrunning and today I set my first official World Record in the 100% category! I would not have done it without you! Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication!
I finally watched it! I love the approach you took on this one. The fact that the first 7 levels were all exactly 1 framerule off when SMB1 was stagnating is such a beautifully convenient coincidence that really helped elevate the video's narrative. Well done!
Update to this video: (Edited) 1. 8.4 had been fully completed down to the frame 2. Nobody has been able to put these all of the levels together for a perfect run 3. Niftski holds the current record with a time of 4.54.631 and he’s had that time for about 9 months. He’s held the record for over a year! 4. We are now 371 ms off of perfection 5. The community still continues to this day to get the time lower and lower
Nah man, this is going to be another binge night where I watch them all again. Every single new video, same ritual. Good thing I have 9.5 hours before work in the AM
I have so much respect for blazit managing to figure out how to deconstruct TAS to human possible inputs. It takes such a profound understanding of the sport, the game and the best techniques
I now understand why TAScorp is called like that in meta runner. Having a robot arm to help you speedrun faster definetely counts as a "tool assisted speedrun" lol.
Dude, these Mario speed running videos is like a series that you need to watch in order. Seeing people like 420blazeit or AndrewG come back is always hype
i love watching videos from salt and other creators and trying to predict who the record is going to be next, like whenever a new record gets mentioned trying to guess who is gonna be the person who had that record and the scary part is i've watched these so many times that im usually right
Oh there is a dompetetive streak a mile wide, but ultimately it's this 'hey i'm the first one to find this tool the community can use' or 'WOOO that guy made me push harder tha n ithought possible!' That level of competetivness is amazing. It's when it gets all or nothing winner is thonly one that matters when it gets super toxic.
I love finding music through documentaries, and I always try to remember the tracks as more than "that song from The Civil War." I can never manage it with Ashokan Farewell, and I can never manage it with We're Finally Landing. You have created something so profoundly inspiring with these docs, and I implore you to never forget it.
Just checking in to say niftski hit frame perfect 8-4 2 days in a row recently. And he’s already done up to 8-3 matching the TAS. 4.54.26 might happen in 2024
imagine using a keyboard, and keybinding a series of keys to an exact sequence of buttons, and then clicking them at *almost* the same time in such a way that they register in the game the way they need to. i figure that could get around the supposed impossibility of it, since that way a single finger wouldn't have to move at that speed, just the computers ability to register it. is that allowed?
there's a film music company called "two steps from hell" that released a lot of very famous epic orchestra pieces. "2 frames from perfection" would be the chiptune equivalent, right?
But using the same music over and over again isn’t kinda getting boring especially the one we’re finally home that one is used so much it irritating to here it
Still kind of hilarious that running this game is so optimized that being over "a tenth of a second ahead of anyone else on the leaderboard" is "pure domination"
Chaz Mcdickinson came here to post this, I was damned on expecting "The key was in a run from 1998 by a runner known as.... Matt Turk" or some such plot twist
To be fair if there's a way to ascend to godhood we just need to put the solution into some barrier skip in a platformer that saves like 0.3 seconds and people will figure it out.
Was never even into speed running until I watched you. Glad you make this type of content cause I bet you probably inspired so many new speed runners to pick up the controller

This is nowhere close to speed runs that completely break the game and go out of bounds all the time such as Half-Life 2 or instances such as Oblivion / Morrowind / GTA San Andreas (skipping the entire god damn campaign!)
SMB speedun still needs to play all the levels that a normal player would do to beat the game quickly.
