  • The new DZO Film Pictor Zoom Lenses are the most affordable cinema zoom lenses available. The Pictor Zooms cover Super 35, APS-C, Crop Sensors and come with interchangeable PL and Canon EF mounts. The lenses have a constant apeture of T2.8 so they work decent in low light and give you a nice shallow depth of field. The Pictor Zooms 20-55mm and 50-125mm make a great pair along with the Tokina Cinema 11-20mm wide angle zoom lens.

      Yep, they finally made EF mount zoom lenses! They've also made a lineup of EF prime lenses. It's so nice to see many companies making more affordable cinema lenses. I don't think I'll ever shot MFT, the sensor is just too small for the look I wanna get. Thanks for watching!

    Chadwin, love your vids!
    Please, could you tell more about your BMPCC6K setup and workflow? How many SSDs and batteries do you use per shift? How is your data storage organized? Is Nucleus Nano prior to a non-electrical FF, if you use it just on a camera? Thank you, as always!
    P.S. moved from X-T3 to A7C, but still shooting in APS-C mode. Do you have any "approved" EF-E adapters in mind?

    • @chadwin

      Hey thanks man! Yeah, I've made a couple of different videos breaking down my Pocket 6k rigs, but here's one of my more recent ones: ua-cam.com/video/FUxZ6JeW_6g/v-deo.html
      I only use one Samsung T5 1TB SSD and it's always been enough space for my shoots. I typically use 1 v-mount battery with the Pocket 6k and it will last the entire shoot. If it's a really long day, I may swap to a second v-mount battery. Hmm..I'll have to make a separate vid on file structure or something. I use the nucleus nano when I want to have the advantage of a follow focus on a gimbal, remote focus puller, or sometimes when I just don't wanna pull manually, But Usually I'm just pulling focus manually by hand.

    Thanks for bringing these lenses to my attention. The price is defininity right. And I think you are correct to point out the value of not having to switch from one prime to another, especially if you are shooting in a dirty environment as often a documentary filmmaker would be doing.
    Also unless one is shooting in extremely low light conditions, focal lengths of 1.4, 1.9 don't really suit the nature of "run and gun," follow the action, kind of shooting. I'll be interested in hearing more about these DZO cine lenses, should you choose to buy them. Great video!

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! Yeah, you're definitely right, the super shallow depth of field 1.4, 1.8 etc. really only works well when you're locked off on a tripod or something. Otherwise, it's very difficult to keep the subject sharp and in focus when you're running and gunning! I'll be making more videos with them in the future and keep ya'll updated as I do.

    Chad, Question. I have the DZO 20-70mm and love it for studio work. I have to do some location shooting soon and in my first tests it was difficult to maintain focus while tracking a speaker
    walking back and forth on stage. Is there a way to set the focus (like infinite) to maintain focus while the speaker is moving around? Looks like we're both in AZ. If you made a video on this it would probably get some hits. It might be the only video on this topic. Thanks.

    Is T2.8 good enough for low light filming (on a Pocket 6k sensor)? That's the one thing making me consider DZOFilm Vespid primes. (Which still aren't the fastest I guess, but better.)
    Maybe I'm too worried about grainy color noise, but that's the reason I got a Pocket 6k even with all its annoying little quirks. Beautiful, professional image quality with basically no distracting noise in low light for a great price. It would be a shame to limit my Pocket 6k too much with a slow lens, but there are so many advantages to these zooms, and I like the not-overly-sharp look too... Hmm... I guess I just won't shoot any spooky low light scenes??

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah, that's a tough one. I'd say that T2.8 is typically good enough for lowlight work, I've done a ton of shoots at 2.8 at night. Getting more light at t1.4 or t1.8 is of course a nice advantage of primes! But....from my personal experience, no matter what I do I still get grain and even some colored grain in very low light situations with the Pocket 6k, even when I'm shooting wide open at T1.5....Typically I can crush the blacks in the grade though and hide the grain. The only camera I've ever had really great lowlight results with is still the entire Sony a7s line up.

    • @mrhobs
      @mrhobs 3 роки тому +1

      @@chadwin Thanks for the input, really helps.
      I'm still very much a beginner, so any time saved not having to swap lenses will probably be more valuable than an occasional slight grain advantage. Probably. And like you said, there are options in post... plus I may even be a terrible human being and add a bit of "film grain" anyway, so... haha.
      I'll probably keep browsing and doing my lens homework for another month or two, but I have a feeling I'll be coming back to these Pictor zooms... hopefully with a sale. Any videos you do on them (and related lenses-just watched your video on the Tokina 11-20 zoom) are appreciated!
      And yeah, there are other cameras I'd like to try someday. :)

    1:02 yeah, but then you have to contend with bad chromatic aberration and too much character. I own a set and found the lenses interpreting color too much - especially on my Alexa. You don’t want that in a lens. You want balanced lenses that don’t re-interpret the color from a badass sensor. Also, that “gentle sharpness” is bs...it’s just too soft and creamy IMO.

    • @chadwin
      @chadwin  3 роки тому

      yeah, there are absolutely trade offs with these lenses. the price is pretty good and quality is decent but by no means are they perfect. i actually like the softness when filming people, but whenever I filmed gear and tech with them it just looked funny and not sharp enough. I totally get your point of view here!
