  • The DZOFilm Pictor 20-55mm T2.8 Lens VS Angenieux Optimo DP 16-42mm T2.8 Lens VS Sigma 18-35mm Lens - Who wins? If you're looking for a DZO Film Lens Review we put this lens up against 2 other popular wide angle cinema zoom lenses.
    In our DZOFilm 20-55 Review we take this new cinema lens through a number of tests including: Sharpness, Parfocal, Lens Flaring, and Color. The cinema lens comparison is filmed on our Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6k G2 camera. The DZOFilm 20 55 costs much less than the industry standard Angenieux Optimo DP 16-42mm, but performs pretty well for 1/8 the cost!
    The DZOfilm pictor 20 55mm t2.8 lens is a really interesting wide-angle cinema zoom that may fill a lower budget niche for a lot of filmmakers. So what do you think about the DZOFilm VS Angenieux VS Sigma Lenses? Are the top cinema lenses worth the extra money or does DZO Film have a contender for the best wide angle cinema lens?
    If you're looking for the best wide angle cine lens, check out our Angenieux Optimo DP 16-42 footage and review in this video. We think the DZOFilm and Sigma are also great option for budget wide angle cine zoom lenses.
    If you have any questions on the techniques used in this review video, please send a note in the comments. Thanks for watching DZOFilm Pictor 20-55mm Lens VS Angenieux Optimo DP 16-42mm VS Sigma 18-35mm: DZO Film Lenses Review, filmed on the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6k G2 camera, in our Film Jams series!

    Thanx a lot for this review! The Angenieux lens family always got my attention and I used the EZ series for a couple of projects. The only downside is that I can't afford them :-/ Now I've got a great alternative. I already pre-ordered the DZOfilm Pictor pair. Now it's even harder to wait for them to come in... ;-) Although I did like the Angenieux lens more, now I have peace of mind knowing that the DZOfilm Pictor lenses are not that far behind in quality... so, thanx again!! do you think its still a solid investment to still go for angenieux / investing in glass ( costing more than $10K ) with all the recent offering's which aren't on the same level for lack of a better word, but slowly creeping up to the same quality at a tenth of the cost? would love your opinion on this (:

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  3 роки тому +1

      It really depends on what your goal is. Rental? Personal use? Plan to resell in near future? Personally I went for a used set of Angenieux DPs because I get more rental requests for them and I love the look. I also think they will always have good resale value. And to me having the wider the 16mm is a part of how I shoot / 20mm is not wide enough for me. But if you are looking for something a bit less expensive to get started and not worried about having a specific look like the Angenieux DP lenses have then I think the DZO are an amazing value for the money. I certainly don’t think they’ll hold you back by any means from creating great content. Hope that helps! Happy shooting!

      To me the Sigma won out in every category except the parfocal. It's clinical, sure, but you can always throw some diffusion on and work on the grading a little bit more to get the colors you want. It excels in every other way. It even surprised me on the breathing test. I was expecting quite a different result.

    Nice video, thanks! I have the DP and this video did make my happy about my choice - the colour, skin tones, smoothness, OOF look are all to my tastes - but wow the DZO is much better than expected. If the DZO was wider (ideally 15-40!) then on balance I'd be very tempted. Also remember that you can buy a used Angie and resell it very happily, also you can service and repair, or quickly replace it with an almost identical unit if you break it during a shoot-- If I was filming an important project I'd only feel safe if I had 2 sets of the DZO on hand

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  3 роки тому

      Hi Kris! Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the video. I was surprised how good the DZO held up as well. Those are some really good points. I do wish they had a 15-40mm-ish DZO focal range as well. (Maybe they have something in the works!) I think that could make things really interesting. And yes having two of the DZO for any large projects would be smart. They’re so cheap that makes that possible haha.

    I have been watching this DZOfilm closely and have always had a positive attitude towards them and I think so far from what I have seen out there, investing in the $4500 pair would be worth it especially for Indie film makers like me who prefer not to have a million primes in one case lol...

    I have a mid range set of Schneider Xenon (also both ef and pl mount) which definitely have a less warm look like the DZO. They cover full frame but I only have the 35, 50 and 75. I was thinking of getting the Angenieux EZ set to replace my canon zooms to keep a cine set of zooms...but am now thinking of saving the cash and grabbing the DZOs as they look a better match (the Schneiders are cooler) and are lighter. Not to mention ...if I rent a full frame camera...I can probably rent glass as I shoot mainly Helium and a pocket 6k.

      Nice! Yes I think the DZO’s would work well to cut with the Xenons. The EZ are my least favorite Angenieux zoom. I would go with a used Optimo before I got a new EZ set - but the Angenieux may not cut as well with the Xenons. Aside from being able to switch them out to full frame (and coverage on all cameras is why I went Xenon)...I was hoping to hear they didn't justify the massive price difference. And more I think about it ...I rarely shoot full frame video anyway. Just like to future proof if and when I can. Super 35 is probably fine for a personal set.

      Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video. I wouldn’t say the Angenieux is cheap really -it’s about $18,000. The DZO is a great bang for the buck as it’s a true cinema lens with durable construction and it’s parfocal - for $2300 - there is no other wide angle cinema zoom even in that price range. The Sigma is a great option if you don’t need the cinema lens features or par-focal ability, but keep in mind as we state in the video; the Cinema version of the Sigma 18-35 is $4000 - almost twice the price of the DZO.

    I was very surprised by the sharpness of the DZO - in every other, admittedly YT review, they look decidedly soft at 4K. I think judging by the comments most of us seek confirmation bias in these reviews. Those for who even the DZO is out of budget will continue to love the Sigma and for those with access to 20K dollar lenses, will probably mostly continue with those. For the professional owner/operator the DZO's are of great interest at this price point, since they have all the professional form factor that still lenses don't. I keep coming back to them. I am torn between the 2 set and the Canon CN-E 18-80mm for my Ursa, as I have around 5K to spend. In many ways the Canon is ideal but I'd really prefer the robustness of a PL Mount rather than EF. But then the range, IS, back focus adjustment and sharpness I have seen with the Canon, continues to make me undecided. One thing I dislike about the DZOs, though rather petty of me, is the 'Make Your Movie' thing on the top, that will have to get covered over, with Pro. Co. label, if I end up buying them! If you'll forgive me, the "Zoom, Zoom!" and other such jokes, slightly take away from an otherwise very thorough test. Many thanks.

      @FilmJams  Рік тому

      Well coming from someone who has both the 18-80 and the DZO, I think they’re both great. But really comes down to if you need Servo zoom and IS or if you want more shallow depth cinematic look and 2 lenses. I rarely use the 2 on the same project. DZO more for interviews and films. And canon 18-80 for event work and behind the scenes type videos where I don’t want to change lenses. The PL is more universal unless you have a lot of Canon cameras. I like that I can use my PL DZO on my red, canon, Alexa all natively (if u buy the Canon PL mount for c300 mk3). Hope that helps!

So at T4.4 you would say the Canon is hard to get cinematic shallow DOF (not that this bothers me, I'm from an ENG background, but clients want that now) and lowlight, compared to the DZOs? And how does the EF mount bear up on the Canon for robustness? Finally, sharpness between the two makes? Your footage on the DZOs seems to be very good, in this regard. Your review is definitely leading me again more towards the DZOs. Many thanks.

      @FilmJams  Рік тому

      @@CUTproductionsLtd for sure! Glad to help. It’s not impossible to get shallow depth with the Canon at T4.4 but certainly harder in smaller spaces. It depends on your room, placement of subject, etc. but that plus the extra light is a pretty big advantage. But on the flip side, so is IS and servo zoom. So just figure out which is more important to you. Sharpness is pretty similar at T4 and above. Robustness- both are similar but with DZO you get PL which to me is a more future proof mount and potentially more rentable if that’s something you might do. Good luck with your choice! 8:56 If you're not familiar with a particular lens, simply don't make claims about it, you'll end up with less factual errors in your videos.
    BTW, when comparing lenses, you might want to set them to similar iris, instead of keeping two at T4 and one at T5/f4 🤦‍♂️

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  3 роки тому

      What claims are you referencing? We compared at f4 and T4 because the Sigma is much darker. We didn’t want to adjust exposure in post to match. And the difference between F4 and F5 on the Sigma doesn’t change the sharpness test. It’s still sharper than the other two even opened up a bit more.

    • @TomaszBrodecki
      @TomaszBrodecki 3 роки тому

      @@FilmJams You've made a remark about Sigma's cine 18-35 parfocal performance that isn't based in facts.
      And judging by the fact that you tried to close down the Sigma even further, I'm going to assume that you don't necessarily understand the difference between f-stops and T-stops.
      Since a T-value is the quotient of the f-stop and the lens's transmission, you'd need a lower f-stop number to correspond to a higher T-stop value, not the other way round.

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  3 роки тому

      Tomasz Brodecki yes it is based on facts, my personal tests, and the testing of one of the best lens resources there is The Cine Lens. Here’s a link to their article so you can better understand how the 18-35 is NOT parfocal - as I said in the video. You might want to check YOUR “factual errors” as you call them ;) www.google.com/amp/s/thecinelens.com/2017/02/08/are-sigmas-cine-zooms-parfocal/amp/
      Check out the graph and let me know what you think 😊 or you can also go onto Sigma’s actual website under their FAQ - where they specifically state their cine zooms are NOT parfocal.

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  3 роки тому

      Tomasz Brodecki as far as the f-stop / t-stop comment, there is no direct conversion from F to T-stops. You can make a f-stop calculation but the result is a theoretical calculation of the image brightness for the stills lens - not an exact measurement.
      There is also light loss from internal reflections, plus no two lenses are the same so there is no direct conversion from F to T stops. In this test we matched the brightness using the waveform monitor so the cinema lenses had a similar exposure to the stills lens. Hope that helps you understand a bit more about our test and why we used the settings we did.

    • @TomaszBrodecki
      @TomaszBrodecki 3 роки тому

      Once you read the article that you linked, you'll probably realize the 18-35mm cine is one of the best parfocal performers around ("a curve of +0.019 to - 0.009").
      In the meantime, please stop using your stills lens experience as reference for the cine version, you end up misleading people who are looking for information.
      As for the quote, I assume you confused me with someone else.
